Low Impact Rosterbation
Why isn't Carlos Silva coming up more in possible trade rumors. He started the year in the bullpen in Philadelphia and played the whole year in 2002, so I have to assume he's closing in on 6 years of major league service time. Hardball dollars does not have him with a contract beyond this year. His contract is moderate at 4.33 million. He' a solid pitcher but nothing eye-catching. He lives on one pitch and totally fits in to the organization's establish the fastball and pound the strikezone mantras. This is my official bring Silva to Seattle call. He's low-risk and shouldn't cost much in the way of prospects, and can be an adequate replacement for the middle of the rotation

Unreasonable Hope Mongering
For the longest time I have thought that a torn rotator cuff or labrum for a pitcher is more or less the end of his career, since there were no real success stories of players coming back from the injury. I always kind of viewed Gil Meche as the poster child for the recovery since he had done as well as anyone, even though he still sucked.
Well I was wrong, there has become one success story for a pitcher coming back from torn labrum surgery, and his name is Chris Carpenter. Carpenter busted up his labrum in 2002 (via DMZ at USS Mariner) it took him until 2004 when he had a decent season going 15-5 with a 3.46 ERA and the highest strikeout rate of his career. In 2005 of course he went to a whole new level and won the Cy Young.
Gil Meche had a couple of surgeries about the same time and has taken a little longer to start to turn it around, but now he has a 3.83 ERA and the HIGHEST STRIKEOUT RATE OF HIS CAREER!!! Now, are you ready for the incontrovertible, totally coincidental evidence?

Thats right scroll down and Gil Meche's 2nd most comparable pitcher through the age of 26 is none other then, Chris Carpenter. If thats not science, I don't know what is

Ricardo Ferrer
The Mariners signed this righty pitcher out of Venuezula today
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2508432
He wasn't on ESPN's top 11 latin america prospects but he was listed in the "other prospects" area, the M's signed him for $290,000. I don't know anything about him but if anyone here spends considerable time in Venezuela and would like to fill me in they would certainly be welcome to do so.
300 Character fact of the Day: Ricardo Ferrer was a European actor during the 1960's and 70's and appeared in movies such as Touch Me Not, and Blue Jeans and Dynamite.
