Behind the Steel Curtain What are the knocks of Frank Summers?

Intruder alert!  We had a quick question over at BFTB (Chargers) about “Frank the Tank”.  He is obviously not good enough to play for the Steelers, because he doesn’t play for the Steelers anymore.

What were the knocks on Summers while he was a Steeler?  Would it be worth it for the Chargers to invest a fifth RB spot to keep him?  Our other FB is a decent blocker and good receiver, but he doesn’t hit as hard as Summers.

Bolts From The Blue 2011 Chargers soft in the middle?

They added Spikes. No way soft factors into any description of him; old for sure.  If you look at it, the Chargers got much younger at LB.  And to me younger = lighter and less muscled.  We watched quite a few more mature bulked up guys leave in Free Agency.

Younger and lighter probably means faster too.  And faster is what we need to improve special teams.  Gachkar or Mouton seem like they are a very long way from the physicality needed to be an NFL linebacker.

Here’s the problem with our youth movement at LB as I see it.  Oakland and KC.  Those are two power Offenses.  If the Chargers LB corps really are undersized the Raiders and the Chiefs are just gonna flatten the Chargers.  Maybe even put our whole secondary on IR.

Pick up Special Teams all you want, it does no good if all you are doing is covering PATs.  Do the Chargers have a problem with too many pups at Linebacker?

Bolts From The Blue So long BTFB

I’ve been an active poster on BTFB for a while.  And lately number of my posts and threads from my post have been deleted.  I've received no warning from any moderator about the content of my posts.

Obviously someone with the rights to make these deletions does not like my opinions.  Not that I think any of it was that controversial.  But someone thought it easier to delete the ideas than refute them.

Goodbye BFTB, thanks for the Kool-Aid.

Great Norv!

Why in the HECK didn't you make this commitment after the Raiders blocked us twice?

2010 Chargers had 5 blocked punts, the rest of the league combined 6! Am I to assume you were a sleep at the wheel up until now Norv? Steve Crosby and that ST unit has SQUANDERED what could have been a very special season for the Chargers.

How many other teams in NFL history have had the #1 offense and the #1 defense? None. That sucks.

Ex-Jax waits until the last possible day to sign the tender. What happens if the Chargers are not avalible to provide said tender.... until tomorrow?

Sorry Vince Jackson....

Memo to Vincent Jackson, players don’t make trades, teams make trades.

V-Jax says he put together deals that would have enriched himself and aided his future team, nothing about the Chargers’ interests.

It appears V-Jax did not consider improving the Chargers’ long-term interests. How ethical is that? The plan B for V-Jax and agents was to play the morality game

V-Jax and his agents would have been better served to put a deal together which served V-Jax, the new team AND the Chargers. The Chargers have been in the driver’s seat on this since day one and team V-Jax could never figure that out. Better luck next time guys.

Bolts From The Blue How does decertification effect V-Jax and MM?

It seems like the NFLPA’s big plan for next year is to fall apart.   By decertifying, in essence all CBA’s would become invalid.

This would seem to avoid a lockout.  Does this mean that every player not under contract for 2011 is an unrestricted free agent?

So V-Jax and MM would go free correct?  But if they do not report this season this season, do the Chargers still get the compensatory selections?

Give me a break! She pulls a press pass to cover the team, up close and in person. Then complaints about dodging some footballs and some presumed naked men and locker room antics?

Guess what Ines Sainz? If you immerse yourself on the side lines or in the locker room you are making yourself part of the story - Deal with it! Otherwise stay in the press box. Or better yet, do that live shot a distance from the stadium. You can lead with, "Yep over there… That is where all the craziness is happening… If I was any closer… I’d feel uncomfortable!"

Who needs 53 players anyway?

I guess I was not considering that both MM and V-Jax were going to consume a spot. And not that I'm bashing them but we have a few other guys on the team with very limited roles: David Binn the best long snapper in the history of the league. Darren Sproles a franchise player that returns punts. CBD a first round draft choice that does not get on the field much. These choices bring the Chargers 53 to 48. The team has decided to toggle a DL or DB weekly - I like. The team is keeping TWO quarterbacks - I don't like. The 2010 Chargers appear to be very vulnerable to injuries. The 2010 Chargers appear to have limited options if one of the 48 players does not play well. Maybe AJ is on to something here... Maybe NFL teams only need 48 players...

6 UDFA Wide Receivers?!

I guess the word is on the street that we can’t keep both Floyd and V Jax after next year. Buster costs just way too much money for his contribution. One of these guy’s is gonna take Buster’s seat at the table. Who is it gonna be? Does either Floyd or V Jax get traded this year (ala Chambers after camp)?

Bolts From The Blue is AJ just getting younger or does the loss of our talented free agents represent a fire sale?

AJ’s tendencies regarding free agency are well documented; he doesn’t like to add talent by free agency, particularly marquee free agents.  I thought I’d add up the 2009 cap numbers for the New and Gone free agents.  I didn’t have numbers for Banks, Mason or McDonald so I threw them in at $300,000 as a guess.  It seems like AJ has cleared about $ 13M in cap room from these moves.

At first I started this investigation because it seemed like the Chargers are having a fire sale this off-season.

But as I looked at in more detail there are quite a few guys with old legs on that Gone list: Bennett, LT, Jamal, Osgood, Mano.

So is AJ just getting younger or does the loss of our talented free agents represent a fire sale?

Bolts From The Blue Luis Castillo's Value Proposition

I was looking at the Chargers roster on Yahoo and something jumped out at me they have Luis Castillo at a cap number of $11.2M for 2009!

I tried to verify it on USAToday.com’s database they have his 2008 salary at $11.2 M ( $0.7M base, $6.1M signing and $4.3M other bonuses).

I am doubting Yahoo’s number, but either way you slice it that is a very big salary number.  That’s like LT, Antonio Gates and Chris Deilman combined!  I like Castillo, but do I like him THAT much?

Anybody have an idea what his 2009 cap number really is?

1 sack and 7 tackles so far… There are 46 DE’s in the league with the same or more sacks and 51 DE’s with equal or better tackles counts.  Does not seem like much of a value to me.

Do we say good bye to Luis Castillo at the end of the year?

Bolts From The Blue Nnamdi Asomugha out for two weeks

Repost from "Silver & Black Pride"

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter Nnamdi is out for at least two weeks with a chipped bone in his left wrist.  He may be out for the monday night opener against San Diego or according to Ron Burgundy the Whales Vaginas.  Just passing on the info.  Hopefully this won't be a lingering injury throughout the year sidelining our best player.  Man, First Kirk goes down now Asomugha.  I hope the injury bug is done bitin' us.

And the hits just keep on coming!
