Oklahoma debating conference options
I would love to have Oklahoma in the B1G. I don't know how realistic of a possibility that is, but it would be cool.
Preseason Coaches Poll has Nebraska at 11th
right behind Wisconsin at 10th.
John Blake-Ndamukong Suh contact in UNC allegations
UNC posted the full notice of allegations (pdf alert). The Suh stuff is on page 34 of the pdf.
"I don't think home runs should be the only think you look at...You should look at who's performing the best....You look at the whole picture...Who's avoiding the most outs? Who's putting the best at-bats together? Who's the best offensive player on your team? There's multiple ways of looking at it, instead of just looking at home runs."
Texas' Parting Blow

All FSN Royals Broadcasts will be available in Iowa
Starting in 2011, all Kansas City Royals telecasts produced by FOX Sports will be available in Iowa. On cable TV, 26 games will be shown on FOX Sports Midwest and the remaining 124 will air on a secondary channel where available, including Mediacom 22. On DirecTV all games will air on channel 672 and on Dish Network all games will air on a sports alternate channel. FOX Sports Midwest's St. Louis Cardinals telecasts are also available in Iowa.
I checked ahead on Mediacom 22, and it appears they have some games but not all. I'm hoping the rest are just on some random digital cable channel.
Omaha Royals are now the Omaha Storm Chasers
Their website seems to be down, but Omaha Storm Chasers is the new name of KC's AAA affiliate.
Ironically, he doesn't draw walks because of incredible eyesight or because he's trying to take them — he gets them because he's looking for extra-base hits.
"They've got business decisions up there with guys making (big) money...There's nothing I can do about it, so there's no sense worrying about it. I look at it. I've talked to my agent about it. But there's nothing I can do."
Iowa Senators Grassley and Harkin ask for Big Ten expansion details
"Rather it appears that invitations are being extended because of the major media markets where they are situated," the letter says. "Thus the invitations to join the Big Ten seem to be extended for the sole purpose of enhancing the financial bottom line that television contracts, marketing and promotional activities will bring member institutions."
--yeah, Nebraska was selected because of its major media market
Considering Every Possible Two-Division Alignment
I ran some computations to find the best rivalry-preserving division alignment.
Spoiler: East-West is best.
Considering Every Possible Two-Division Alignment
[Bumped for backing up my thoughts about division alignment with cold hard empirics. Warning: Don't read this until you've had your coffee. - Law Buckeye]
Everyone has their ideas about division alignment in the newly expanded Big Ten. As a Nebraska fan, I don't have much intuition of the importance of various Big Ten rivalries, so I wanted to take a quantitative approach to splitting up the conference in a way that would preserve the best rivalries. I scored potential rivalries using Sports Illustrated's 2009 Big Ten fan poll, and then I computed the aggregate score of the rivalries preserved by all 462 possible breakdowns of the conference into two six-team divisions. I considered both the possibility of maintaining one cross-division rivalry per team as well as the straight-up Big XII style divisions. I hate to be anticlimatic, but this method basically just showed that mostly everyone is right: an East-West split is best.
Pine tar game was replayed because the ump applied a rule incorrectly. That's not the case here.

If Selig reverses call and it's a perfect game, does that mean the Cardinals are the 85 Champs?

Jack Cust available for the minimum
I know that I can't be educated about what makes a good DH. But maybe Cust could at least platoon with JoGui. Like maybe Cust DHs against baseball players, and JoGui plays on off days. Something like that.
Mathematics and Sports is the theme for this year's Mathematics Awareness Month.
On the Field, the Yankees Are The Team of the Decade. Off It? The Red Sox.
Jayson Stark wrote about this last week, including all of the relevant information: in the '00s, the Yankees have the most regular season wins, the most postseason wins, the most postseason series wins, most World Series appearances, and now, they have tied the Red Sox for the most World Series wins.
So are the Yankees the team of the '00s? They really should be, yet I'm hesitant to fully commit.
When I think back to this decade when I'm older, I think I'll mostly think of the Red Sox.
Gordon Finally Plays for Omaha
Sounds like the rehab is going well.
Update on Gordon's Rehab
"Finally, Alex Gordon will play in an Omaha uniform. ... The Royals hope Gordon will be ready to play in the major leagues after the All-Star break."
AAA Papillion
It seems that the Omaha Royals are headed to Papillion, Nebraska.
It felt like one giant baseline rally in tennis.
Vote on the location for the new AAA Royals stadium
The poll is on the lower right hand side of the page. Hwy 75 and Chandler Road is in Bellevue, 126th Street and Hwy 370 is in Papillion, and Southport West at I-80 and Giles Road is in La Vista. I fully expect non-Nebraskans to choose based on which city name goes with their preferred new team nickname.
Omaha Newspaper Brings in Rany to Analyze the Royals' 2009 Chances
I guess this a lot better than the opinions of their own sportswriters. I wonder if we can get the Lincoln paper to interview Will.
Should the Royals become a Constitutional Monarchy?
Today, Seattle Sounders FC will play their inaugural regular season game as a member of MLS. This would normally be of very little interest to me except that the Sounders have imported the best idea ever to come from foreign sports: fan control of the team.

Q. How'd you get the name Joba?
A. It's a nickname. I was born Justin, but after visiting the (Winnebago) reservation where my family's from, that's the name I was given. It's not from "Star Wars." I've never seen the movies.
Q. Are you into movies?
A. I love the film "Shawshank Redemption" and any comedy. I'm a huge Adam Sandler fan.
Q. What about music?
A. It's the greatest form of expression there is. I was involved in musicals when I was in high school — "West Side Story" and "Footloose."
