Well, tgsgirl's thread got buried by new posts already, so where is a fellow to talk about the upcoming world champs? Here.

Some talking points:

Can Hushovd repeat? It's a great parcours for him, and his support has quality, if not quantity.

Is the course hard or not? Lots of hills or just lots of hype?

Which is the strongest squad? Candidates: Belgium and Spain as ever, Germany, France, Britain?

Can Peter Sagan still sprint after 280km? Awesome as he is, he's still only 21!

Is there even any point in running the race with Gilbert in the form he is? Or watching.

Have at ye!

Time for some smack on the third last major VDS date, potentially even the decider.

Here was the result of the system I applied to the sprints in the Giro. It's principle was that you gain points according to who you beat rather than your placing. Gigi Sgarbozza kindly agreed to chalk them up for me.

So does it fairly reflect who did what at the Giro? The standings differ from the Red Jersey classement, but I have no simple way of checking VDS/CQ points (for this race only) to compare.

If anyone's curious there's a full table here, but sorry: I didn't update it with the points for stage 18 (Downing scored 3, that was the only difference).

This was the original thread with more details.

Giro Sprint Scoreboard

(full table)

Here's another little experimental comparison of sprinters. The system: in each stage of the Giro, sprinters finishing in the top nine gain points according to the ranking of the others they outpace. Riders in the top ten are counted. An inital ranking is based on 2010 season VDS standings among the pool of sprinters at the Giro. The points recieved from each rider beaten rider will be: 60 divided by that riders rank. The ranking is then recalculated with all those points added, for the next stage. The points accumulate throughout the race.

Catalunya VDS Fanshot

Here's a startlist. Quite a lot of big riders there, although not defending champion Joaquim Rodriguez, who has health issues. No chrono in the race at all, one mountain top finish. No prizes for predicting the winner, in this case. Who do you have here?

Who ya got?

Giro del Friuli: the ambiguous Italian day race which can be won by riders of various specialisations. Evans first race on Thursday too. Who are you sending?

Cat 6 and 5 respectively, so don't get overexcited.

Gah, just when I hit the 'submit' button. I don't know whether my team is actually in yet. The suspense is unbearable.

VDS: the big wigs (24+pt.). Which, if any, are worth it?

  1. Rodriguez- improved support, wins elusive in 2010.
  2. Gilbert- prime candidate for three of the monuments.
  3. Farrar- relatively versatile, no tour stage/monument yet.
  4. Cavendish- still the fastest, underperformed in 2010.
  5. Schleck- about as likely to win the Tour as you can get.

Their website. Their CQ this year. Pretty interesting prospect, don't you think? They could have a nice feeder team in Jayco Skins.

Linked above is the Cyclingfever startlist: usually theirs are as good as any. Euskaltel, Xacobeo Galicia, Milram all have draft selections up. Sky nine up at CN now. Thought I'd repost this. They'll all be coming out day to day, if not confirmed.

Podium Cafe Clasica San Sebastian: Who Ya Got? VDS Smack

Official start list.
Cyclingfever start list. Who ya want: here are three: Hesjedal was 5th last time, and is currently flying. Samuel Sanchez seems like a no brainer for this, although he sustained an injury at the tour. Kreuziger took second in 2009, and his name seems to be being thrown around much. Three more random choices: Angel Viscioso, Reuben Plaza, Nicolas Roche. Just say if these picks are crap.

By the Cyclingfever start list, I got: Purito 'Smokin' Rodriguez, Greg 'Grrrrr' Van Avermaet, Nicolas 'Just tell him John Gadret's up the road' Roche, Luke 'Can climb and sprint but not against these guys' Roberts. That's one solid favourite plus three. So you can post yours with confidence.

Cosmo Catalano's how the Liege - Bastogne - Liege Was Won.

Any or every one of these is worth posting, because you don't get the tactical analysis in the press. As for the sentiment expressed in the commentary: just yeah!

Contracted through til the end of 2011. I deleted an earlier fanshot because I didn't think it was gong to be new to anyone, but I'd still like to check peoples' responses. Didn't have much previous knowledge myself, but this seems a significant signing. Don't know the details of what he did to get chucked off Astana.
