Defending Big D 2012 NHL Playoffs: An Impartial Fan's View of the Sharks vs. Blues Game 5

Photo

Editor's note: We're putting this post by Trevor up on the front page. It's a great story about a Stars fan's experience at another team's playoff game. Good stuff.

Over the last weekend, I took a quick vacation to St. Louis to enjoy some well deserved down time from my job (As a tax accountant, I had been putting in 70-80 hours a week for a couple months in a row). I've been to St. Louis a few times before, since it's only a 4 hour drive from where I live, and I love the atmosphere.

It's similar to Dallas, really. Big town, friendly people, a beautiful ballpark where I saw game 6 of the World Series in person nothing of importance happened last year that I can remember. They also have gambling, which I love. It helps that I win at the poker tables every time I play too. But the one thing I hadn't done there was go to a hockey game. Let me tell you, that's a mistake I'll never make again.

The first thing I did when I began planning this trip was to check the playoff schedule. It's a force of habit, since that's what I do whenever I manage to travel down to Dallas. I saw that game 5 was scheduled for Saturday, and kept my eyes peeled for tickets. I was able to grab a pair of lower level tickets the second they went on sale. (I've had a couple people ask me about the price, and after Ticketmaster fees, it came out to about $80 a piece -- Not bad for lower level playoff tickets, I think.)

I then spent the week hoping that the Blues would go on a tear after losing game 1, and find a way to make game 5 an elimination game. Not only had I never been to an elimination game before, I had never even made it to a plain old playoff game. It turned out to be better than I could have imagined.

For a very detailed look at the aspects of the game, as well as a comparison to the hockey environment in Dallas, read on after the jump.

Defending Big D 2012 NHL Playoffs: Magic Number Shows How Dallas Stars Can Clinch This Weekend

A miracle happened on Thursday night: The Sharks/Coyotes game ended in regulation. This sets up a number of possibilities for the Stars to clinch over the next 3 games, and I wanted to discuss the options, ranging from the quickest route possible, down to what is more likely to happen.

First and foremost, the Stars' magic number is 7. Ignoring the implications of what any other team does, a 3-1-1 record on their own will clinch them a playoff berth.

But we know what's coming up on Saturday: Our head to head matchup with the Sharks. San Jose is now in 9th place, meaning that the games we play against them are of the 4 point variety. It affects both sides of the magic number equation. Of course, we only get the full 4 points if we win in regulation. If you win in Overtime or the Shootout (It no longer matters which, the Stars hold the ROW tiebreaker no matter what), you get 3 points.

For an idea of what exactly all that means, take a look after the jump.

Defending Big D 2012 NHL Playoffs: Dallas Stars Magic Number Countdown, 2 Weeks To Go

Only 2 weeks remain in the stars schedule, and things are coming down to the wire. The Pacific race, not to mention the race for the 8 seed, is as tight as I've ever seen it. At least last year it was only us and Chicago trying to get in. This time around it's the Stars, Sharks, Yotes, Kings, and the Avs all vying for the Pacific division crown, or the 7th & 8th seed. Three of those teams will continue their season. Two will go home wondering what could have been. At least part of this race will come down to the last day of the regular season. I have no doubt about that.

So let's take a look and try and figure out where the Stars will wind up after game 82, shall we?

The three games over the past week panned out almost exactly as I hoped. A win against Phoenix and Calgary, and a loss to Vancouver. That's about as much as you can ask, considering that both the Coyotes and the Flames are desperately trying to stay in the race, and we had already managed to beat Vancouver twice before. (In my mind, that game against the Nucks was merely an extra bonus. If we had won, it would have been great, but I already considered it a loss.)

The Stars did their part this week, and maintained that small cushion that they built up across an 11 game point streak. That's the good news. The bad news is that the cut line for the 8th spot crept up another point.

Take a look at the magic number standings after the jump, including a team by team analysis of where they stand.

Defending Big D 2012 NHL Playoffs: Dallas Stars Magic Number Countdown, 3 Weeks To Go

You'll have to excuse this post if it is somewhat abbreviated. It's been a hectic weekend, and my week is even worse. They've bumped up our hours to 70+ per week until the end of tax season. I'll try to keep these out on Sunday Nights/Monday mornings, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Just an FYI!

Now, on to the Magic Numbers! As I predicted last week, we did not receive a whole lot of help:

But I wouldn't expect that run of luck to continue. If the magic number is below 15 or 14 next week, I will be pleasantly surprised...I think if they earn another 4 out of 6 possible points this week, they will maintain that cushion, and be that much closer to the playoffs.

Well, it turns out I was correct on both counts. We only got two points-worth of help from our enemies. If we had managed to go 2-1 over the last week, we would have maintained our cushion nicely. Instead, the margin has gotten pretty slim.

Take a look at the standings after the jump.

Defending Big D 2012 NHL Playoffs: Dallas Stars Magic Number Countdown, 4 Weeks To Go

It's been another successful week for the Stars, with our team managing to capture the full 6 possible points this week. As Worley has talked about before, the fans are practically salivating for some playoff hockey. Well, going on a 9-0-1 will definitely help you get there.

But they aren't safe yet. Despite all the good that they have accomplished over the last few weeks, it still can all be undone in just a few games. The playoff race is just as tight as ever, and the Stars cannot afford to take their foot off the gas right now.

While the same number of teams are jumbled up and all fighting for just 3 playoff spots, the good news is that the Stars have managed to scrap their way to the top of that pile. And boy is it so much more fun being on top and forcing the other teams to keep up with us. It's a refreshing change of pace, and I'm really hoping that it continues.

So, without further ado, let's take a look at how much closer the Stars are to the ultimate goal this season: making the playoffs for the first time in years. Take a look at all the numbers, both good and bad, after the jump.

Defending Big D 2012 NHL Playoffs: Dallas Stars Magic Number Countdown, 5 Weeks To Go

All I can say is "Wow..... What an amazing 2 weeks it has been." The Stars have suddenly found their stride, and are managing to find ways to wins in improbable fashion. We've watched the Stars climb their way up the standings, going from 10th or 11th, all the way up to 7th. I never imagined they would have done this well.

What's been most encouraging to see is that, lately, they've been finding different ways to win. They bored us to death against Edmonton, they had one of the most exciting games imaginable against the Pens, and now they went though their entire supply of sticks (somewhat literally for Robi) with over 40 shots on goal against the Flames. Sometimes they come out on fire, and other times they rely on Kari to bail them out. Yet they still find ways to win. It really does seem like they are playing for each other right now, doesn't it?

Perhaps the best news of all is that the Stars could potentially, even if for just a night, be leading the division should the Coyotes lose to the Pens on Monday night. Perhaps a deserving reward after getting 13 of a possible 14 points. They've certainly picked a great time to go on a roll. With 5 weeks left in the regular season, it's turning into an all out sprint to the finish. Every night is an absolute battle, ones that we can't really afford to lose. And up to this point, they've been cashing in on these opportunities.

So what does a potential division lead mean for the Stars' playoff hopes? Can they really fall out of the playoff race now, after doing so well in the last 7 games? The answer, unfortunately, is yes. And it can happen lightning quick too.

Take a look after the jump to see what I mean.

This is a bit last minute, but Mike Modano just posted this watching party at Hully and Mo's for tonight's game against the Coyotes. If you're in Dallas, and not going to the game at the AAC, you should make an appearance!

I should also add that this is not an official Dallas Stars watching party, so don't expect free goodies or the ice girls. This is something that Modano is throwing together on his own.

The title of this fanshot links to Modano's FB profile. Here's Hully & Mo's website, to get the necessary directions if you need them.

Defending Big D Magic Numbers: The Effect of Games In Hand

As my grandmother used to say: "Well, crap!"

Yesterday's loss definitely didn't feel good.. There's not much to say, other than that. Personally, I tend to side with Razor, and think that the scheduling and a weak call against Ott cost the Stars a point. Such is the life of a central time zone pacific division team.

The good news, however, is that it's not time to panic yet. The magic numbers show that the Stars still maintain control of their own destiny, despite another 1-2 week. But, as I predicted a couple of weeks ago, the Western conference race has tightened up considerably. So much so, that games in hand actually have a drastic effect on the standings, depending on how you rank them.

If you want to see what I mean, just take a look after the jump.

Defending Big D Week of 1/9 OT Thread: All Replies Must be in French

Okay, the replies don't actually have to be in French. I just wanted to mock the Habs fans, who yet again protested that their coach doesn't know how to speak it yet. Seriously? How about protesting the crappy team you guys have had for 20+ years instead?

Graham is getting back into the swing of classes, so he asked me to fill in for him on the OT thread this morning. I don't know how many talking points I have, but we'll just see where it goes, shall we?

Football playoffs - Anyone cheering for a particular team? Seems like most people are Saints and Broncos fans at this point. I'm impartial, as I don't really care for the sport. But I do have a superbowl party every year. It's easier to plan than Stanley Cup Parties, that's for sure.

Do you guys have any offbeat movies? Since we discussed Equilibrium last week, I thought I'd throw this one out there. I have two that I absolutely love. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is my comedy of choice. If you grew up playing video games, then you will enjoy this movie. For real. I literally quote this movie at least 3 times a day. For the serious one, it's called "Blindness." It has Julianne Moore, and Mark Ruffalo in it. Basically, it is about blindness that becomes contagious. It follows a man and his wife as they are put into a quarantine building, and essentially left on there own (with about 50 others) trying to survive. Except the wife can actually see -- she lied about being blind just so she wouldn't leave her husband behind. It is by far one of the most intense, thought provoking films I've ever watched. Extremely creative, too. (Also, a ton of nudity, just FYI. Everyone is blind and covered in filth -- it's easier for them to walk around mostly naked instead of cleaning clothes. It's not a film for young ones.)

Does anyone go camping? If so, how do you do it? Do you unload next to your car, and set up shop there? Go hiking? Are you a minimalist? What are your favorite spots?

Anyone read any good books lately? I can never seem to get into any new authors. I've always read Tom Clancy, Dean Koonts, and the other basics (HP, LOTR, etc.).

Now that Christmas is over, I have already seen Easter candy out in stores (not joking). What is your favorite all time holiday candy?

Defending Big D Magic Numbers: A Look at the 4 Point Games

(Note: All games through Saturday are included)

Another great win from the Dallas Stars last night, and another boost in the magic numbers. I know that yesterday, there were several people like me watching the scores of games, and hoping that things would go our way. Well, for the most part, they did! We had 4 big games go in our favor on saturday: The Star won (of course!), And the Avalanche, Kings, and Wild all lost in regulation.

Admittedly, it could have gone better, but you can't really trust the Eastern Conference to win any games against the West at this point. (And the weaker conference is the one complaining about all the travel? I bet they also put band-aids on their booboos and sit out a game for it. Our guys get their teeth knocked out, then spit blood in a cup in between shifts.)

If this is your first time to read these articles, and you're not sure what the Magic Number is exactly, you can read about it here.

After the jump, we'll dive right in to the spreadsheets. There's more than usual this time, as we'll start to take a look at the divisional race as well.

Defending Big D Magic Numbers: Narrowing Down the Field

Happy New Year Stars Fans! Hope you guys had as much fun as I did!

I was originally going to post the magic number updates Saturday morning, but due to the large volume of games last night, I decided to wait an extra day. Boy, am I glad I did. That was quite a win by Dallas, and, as you'll see below, they still remain in good shape for the playoff race, despite going 1-2 this week.

Overall, it's been a pretty interesting week. The rankings are a bit more shuffled compared to the last time we took a look at them. Personally, I think makes it that much more fun. But there has also been some stability in the bottom of the conference, which helps us narrow down the field a bit on who is really still involved in the playoff race.

For some in depth analysis on the Stars' magic number, as well as the rest of the Western conference, take a look after the jump.

Defending Big D Magic Numbers: The Quest to Reach "Zero"

First off, I hope everyone is enjoying their Christmas break, or days off from work. I know I am!

A season or two ago, I started tracking the magic number, just for fun. It quickly became a bit of an obsession for me (as does everything else surrounding Dallas Stars hockey), and it's something that I update on my own after every Stars game. You can usually see me post a comment about it after a Stars win, but I've decided to try and turn it into a weekly post instead.

Before I post spreadsheets and numbers galore, though, I want to explain what exactly the magic number is. Unlike the posts from Josh or Brandon Bibb, these are not useful stats. They cannot be applied to see how well the team has been playing, or what areas the Stars need to work on. Instead, it's merely a countdown to securing a playoff spot. It's more of a "goal" that you can look at. At the beginning of the season, the magic number is 165, and, by game 82, the goal is to get that number to 0. Unfortunately, for the last three seasons, the Stars have been unsuccessful in doing just that.

If you're interested in learning about the magic number, and tracking it along with me (as well as some shallow analysis on how the other teams in our conference are doing), take a look after the jump...

Defending Big D OT Thread for 12/12

Graham is busy sleeping in this morning (not really), so I've taken over the OT thread duty for this morning. I'm going to try and use Dallas Stars experiences to create a theme for this thread... we'll see how successful it turns out.

  • What is the longest airplane flight you've ever had? Any interesting things happen while you were on there? (I think my longest flight was just over 2 hours, so not much to tell on my end.)
  • Have you ever run into an old co-worker after they left for a different job? Was it awkward? Were you actually able to have a conversation besides "Hey! How are you? So.... how are things?"
  • Bachman did a pretty decent job the other night, considering the amount of pressure that was on him. Have you ever been in a similar situation?
  • The new conference realignment allows for 2 more teams to be added in the future (with the market and dilution of current hockey talent, it's not likely to happen in the next 5 years, at least). What 2 cities would you like to see get a hockey team? What would their mascots be? Personally, I would love to see a Hamilton team come in, and win a cup, just to annoy Leafs fans even more... but that's just me.

I hope everyone has a great week. Less than 2 weeks til Christmas! (Admittedly, I don't know when any of the other holidays occur, but they're right around the corner too, right?!)

Defending Big D 11/28 OT Thread

Graham is stuck trying to play catch up on school work this morning, so I'm filling in for the OT thread duties.

Speaking of schoolwork -- For those of you that finished college, are you in a career that you got your degree in? Seems like more and more people are doing something besides what they thought they wanted to do. (Personally, I think the fault for that is the structure of classes themselves. Theory of a subject does not match reality anymore.)

I'm sick as a dog this morning.  Some kind of cold or flu. Do you guys get flu shots? If you don't why not? Are they actually filled with microscopic implants that the gov't uses to track you at all times? Or do you have a less conspiratorial reason?

What about holiday shopping? Did anyone do black Friday? Anything cool happen? I do all of my shopping online now, so I don't have many awesome stories to share, but I did it once in high school.  A friend of mine worked at Best Buy, and new the door buster deals (this was before they revealed them a week before, in order to avoid tramplings and the like). We went out at 2AM, and were the 6-8th people in line. It was really cold and windy, and we were miserable.  But then I remembered I had a car tarp in my trunk, since my convertible leaked. We made friends with the person in the lawn chair next to us, and he got under the tarp with us holding one side down. My friend pulled a rocking horse from the trunk of his car, and used it as a seat to hold the other side down.  And we played board games until it was time for the store to open.

OT Hockey Subject:  Since this seems to be coming up over and over in threads -- If you could make any trade for the Stars, what would it be? Who would you get? Who would you give up? Keep it realistic as far as trade value is concerned, but I think you can ignore NTCs for this conversation.

Since the Stars are so injured right now, perhaps it is apropos that we discuss injuries of our own? What the worst one you've ever had? I once cut off the tip of my thumb with a wood chisel. Had to go to the hospital to cauterize the wound. While I was there, some friends of mine dug through the wood shavings and found the tip for me. I kept it in a bag until it turned black (COOL!).

Defending Big D [UPDATED] Quick get together before the Leaf's game on 25th?

[UPDATE:] Well, the Fan never got back to me on the private room area, so I'm not expecting that to happen at this point.  But I went in after the game on Wednesday night and scoped out the place. There's a lot of room, and I don't think it will be too packed a couple of hours before the game, so we should be fine.  I plan on being there at 5:00-5:30 and then heading out about an hour before the game starts.  I know Henri will be there, and if you guys haven't met him yet, you definitely should!

When I get there, I'll try to set up shop right in front of the doors (By the radio broadcast booth).  Wherever I am, look for the "Defend Big D!!" sign that made it on the jumbotron last night.  I'll have that out and visible to help make meeting up easier.

See you guys there! [/UPDATE]

Hey guys,

I know a lot of us will be in town and at the game against the Leafs on Friday the 25th, so I thought I'd see if anyone was up for meeting up a little bit before the game.  I'd love to meet all of you, but once the game starts, I'm usually glued to my seat.... So I thought a pre-game "hello" would work out better.

Would anyone else be up for it?

The Fans Sports Lounge is just across the street.  They had their grand opening this week, and the place looks fantastic.  I was thinking about meeting up here before the game begins. I was planning on being there a couple hours early, to eat and drink (plus I like to get to the AAC early to watch warm ups, too).  It looks like they have a couple of private areas, so if enough of us are interested in going there early enough to eat/drink pre-game, I could see about reserving the area.

So how bout it? Y'all want to meet up there?  And if so, would you want to be there early enough to grab a bite to eat?

Just a preliminary idea, too. Not set on this location or anything, so if you know of a better place, let me know in the comments!

Defending Big D Kyle Turris asking for a trade

I was reading on ESPN this morning that Turris is looking for a trade...  I thought I'd see how other people feel about the opportunity to get him.

A young right handed center with potential... it could definitely be a good opportunity.  But there's a lot of questions to consider too...

What would we have to give up for him?

If he's refusing to play right now (because he won't sign what the team wants to sign him for), will we be able to sign him for the right price?

Would he even be willing to stay in Dallas for a long period of time, or is this a typical sign of a player who is always looking for their next big payday?

Would he be a good fit for the Stars at all?  Would he hinder the development of any of our other players?

I'm stuck in CPE all day long, so I thought this would be a somewhat interesting discussion.

Defending Big D World Series Game 4 GDT

Just wanted to toss a thread out there and see if anyone joined in.  I spend time over at Lone Star Ball, but their game day threads move entirely too fast for me.  I can't comment and watch the game at the same time over there, even though it's usually hilarious.

Anyways, if this doesn't really take off, I'll just delete the post.  But I figured it was worth a shot.

Defending Big D When I think of Glen Gulutzan, I think "Band of Brothers"

Bear with me on this.... we'll see if I can make it coherent enough for anyone else to make sense of it.

Unfortunately, this will only make sense if you've seen the HBO series "Band of Brothers."  If you haven't see this thing yet, you need to. It's one of the best films about WWII that is out there.

On the other hand, if you've seen the Band of Brothers a couple dozen times like me, you know a lot of memorable characters from the series.  Each one has their unique traits, flaws, and abilities that define who they are.

Maybe I'm just crazy, but I feel like last 3 coaches almost fit in perfectly with the 3 commanders of Easy company.

First off, you have Dave Tippett, known as Lt. Winters in this case.  He took the group, built up an excellent defensive system, and had them compete at a high level on a regular basis. He did an amazing job, and all of the players respected who he was, and the system he had built.  In BoB, Lt. Winters was the first (real) commander of Easy company. He was a brilliant strategist, earned the respect of every man serving under them, and led them on to greatness (They earned several medals while he was commanding). But eventually, the company had to move on. Lt. Winters was promoted to Battalion executive officer, and Lt. Dike wound up taking his place. The one flaw in comparison to Tippett, is that obviously Tip wasn't promoted.   He was, however, removed from position of coach simply because it was time to move on, and time for the team to try and go in another direction.  A direction, that, unfortunately, would take us to Crawford.

Crawford was hired (based on what I've heard) as a recommendation from some people that Joe knew.  At first he seemed like a decent fit, but then the troubles of last season came about.  And that was when he disappeared.  He left the players to do things on their own, instead of taking charge in the locker room and leading the way.  And while that may be okay to some degree, eventually things will completely fall apart, especially when under duress.  Crawford is our Lt. Dike.  Dike became the captain, even though he wasn't the original, best choice.  He never really seemed to fit in. He didn't earn the respect of his men.  He always seemed distant.  For the most part, that was fine.  Until they got to Bastogne, and fought the Battle of the Bulge.  Whenever the crap hit the fan, he would completely disappear ("You stay here, and I'm going to go for... help!"). He let his men do whatever, without making any real decisions.  The plans that he came up with were half brained, and never made any sense to his men (The Stars' "offensive strategy").  The biggest example of that is when they were leaving the woods, and had to take the town of Foy (beating the Minnesota Wild to make the playoffs).  It was supposed to be a relatively easy thing to do. The Germans forces were heavily outmatched, and prepared to leave once the going got tough.  But Dike, who had never really led his men, had no idea what to do. When they were in the middle of a field, he panicked and froze. His half brained idea was to have one squad (aka Jamie Benn), and attack the entire village from the rear, without any real support.  Obviously, this was not going to work.

(Here's where the analogy breaks down a little bit... The Battalion XO saw what was happening, and sent in Lt. Spears to replace him in the middle of the battle.  Unfortunately, Joe couldn't just fire Crow mid game, and hire Gulutzan to win the game, so we missed the playoffs.  But I figure it's close enough.)

When Lt. Spears came in mid battle, he quickly assessed what was going on. He stopped the half brain plans to attack the village from the rear, and organized his group of men into the most efficient way possible.  They were quick, methodical, and effective.  The best part of all is the Spears led by example.  He was regularly talking with his men, listening to what they had to say, and incorporating their strengths to make the company even stronger.  The men respected him, and he respected them.  After all, they were just happy to have a real commander again.

So in comes Gulutzan, to save the Stars' day. He forgets about the "offensive strategy" that Crawford was trying to put in place, and builds a system that works to all of the players' strengths. He listens to his players, and works closely with them. He leads the way.  And while I know it's still preseason, there's no denying that he seems to be extremely effective so far.  Maybe he can be the one to lead us on to victory.  Who knows.

Maybe that's a stretch of an analogy, but it seems to fit perfectly for me. What do you guys think?

Defending Big D I'd like to do something for the Skrastins family... (Updated by B. Worley)

[Editor's Note: Thanks to some great ideas by you guys and awesome initiative by Trevor, DBD is going to be heading up this project. We'll have much more details early next week)

The Dallas Morning News has an article out that talks a little bit more about the players reactions to the accident that happened on Wednesday. Here's the link.

The thing that caught my eye about it was the fact that Karlis' wife and 2 (soon to be 3) children are going to be returning to Dallas.  I'm not sure if they mean temporarily, or if they will be staying in Dallas for a while, but they will be returning nonetheless.

I thought maybe if we put our heads together, we could come up with something to show our continuing support for the family.  Obviously, first and foremost, I know the Dallas Stars are working on putting something together.  I fully plan on contributing to that, whatever it is.

But I was wondering if the DBD community could throw something together as well.  Maybe it's just me, but I feel like we're a pretty close knit community (about as close as you can get with online blogs, anyhow), and would love for us to do something as a group.  I have no idea what we could do... heck, I'm still in disbelief about the whole thing...  But if you guys have any ideas, post them below, and we can roll with it.

Now, there's a valid argument that I heard over at LSB when Shanon passed away earlier this year.  That doing something as a group instead of contributing to the Team's fund can be viewed as just an opportunity to push our name out there.  While I understand that train of thought, I disagree with it for 2 reasons: First, I still plan on contributing to whatever the Stars put together (I'm assuming it's some kind of memorial fund).  Second, I think of our own contribution in the sense that if one of your relatives passes you get different cards from different friends. Heck, some friends don't get you a card at all, they bring over a 12 pack of beer and sit shivah with you. Everyone contributes in their own way.

So, if we were to do something as a group, what do you guys think we should do?

If we can come up with something special to do as a group, should we find a way to do it?
Absolutely, let's figure this out

I think it would just be better to stick with what the Stars organization puts together

Defending Big D Center Ice prices

I did a little looking around the internet, and there seems to be some word out on the price of Center Ice already.  Supposedly it's going to cost $179.80. (Though I also read $172 for the early bird special, but $7, big whoop)

Just wanted to give people a heads up in case they're anything like me, and saving up to buy it.

And since a lot of people have questions about blackouts and stuff, I thought we could direct all of that traffic to this post, to make it easier for everyone to find.  I'm currently working on getting a blackout map to make things easier, but until then, it is safe to assume that if you live in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, or Arkansas, you are going to be blacked out.

Also, if you're looking at Center Ice vs. GameCenter, be aware that it is up to the cable provider how many games they want to show in HD, and which broadcast they want to show.  Some providers will have the option of both broadcasts, as well as post as many games as possible in HD.  Other providers (such as Dish Network) do only the bare minimum one broadcast, and only have 1 or 2 games a night in HD.  GameCenter on the other hand, is all HD (as long as the cameras are HD, of course), and you can stream 4 games at once.  But you also need fast internet, and it will be on your computer, not your tv. If you can hook up your PC to your TV, then no worries, but keep that in mind when deciding!

Defending Big D SBN iPhone App!!!!  FINALLY!

Hopefully I didn't beat our bloggers to the punch about this, but I was too excited not to share.  It's been frustrating trying to comment on GDTs while at an actual game before, so hopefully this will solve the problem.  I found it while I was joining every WC hockey blog (since some of them have 24 hr waiting periods, and I never get to comment when I want to).

Check it out over on the JacketsCannon Website, or just click here.

Semi related to the Dallas Stars, since I know a lot of us liked having the guy doing the Stars programs. (Definitely better than the other guy.... you know who I'm talking about....) I'm sad to hear that he wasn't very well received as the Rangers' play by play guy, but hopefully he'll fit in well as the pre and post-game shows over there. Maybe he can even do some stuff with the Stars again next season.

Best of luck to you, Rhads

Defending Big D The Re-entry waivers problem...

I was reading some Heika bits this afternoon, and he had an interesting note about re-entry waivers:

The need for recall waivers goes away after the trade deadline (Feb. 28), so Segal will not be recalled until that time (at the earliest).

Here's the full article.

It's not like this has any ground breaking effects, but it will be nice to see Segal come back up for the playoffs if anyone gets hurt.  It also means that they've been playing Gagnon right on pace to use up his 10 game limit to just before the trade deadline, so there shouldn't be any problems.

I'd also expect that you'll see our old friend (and the butt of many jokes) Brunnstrom being called up on March 1st for Toronto for the remainder of their season.

Like I said, nothing huge, but I thought it was worth sharing.

Defending Big D I need your opinion

My wife is getting me some hockey tickets for my birthday!  We're going to see the Stars play the Preds in Nashville in late March.  So right now we're trying to figure out where to sit.

Obviously, the "defensive" end for the preds works great for us, because we get to see the Stars shoot in that end 2 times, plus those tickets are always cheaper than anywhere else.

The other option we have is to sit about 4 rows behind the Stars bench for the game.  Taking a quick look at the seating chart, it also looks like this is the same area where the teams enter and exit the ice between each period.  Does anyone know if that's correct?

We love to watch the game where the stars attack twice, but it might also be awesoem to be only 5 rows away from the Stars while in a different city.  My fear is that the glass will interfere with my watching pleasure.

Also, the tickets in the premium seats in nashville are only $93, and not $150 like it is in dallas.

So what do you guys think?
