Playoff Chase Watching Thread 8/27

Yay for BASEBALL! PLAYOFF CHASE BASEBALL!

You see, you spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time.  ~Jim Bouton, Ball Four, 1970<!--CB, CMGB-->

If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving an infant's life, she will choose to save the infant's life without even considering if there are men on base.  ~Dave Barry

People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball.  I'll tell you what I do.  I stare out the window and wait for spring.  ~Rogers Hornsby

Baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of ten and be considered a good performer.  ~Ted Williams<!--CB-->

I'm convinced that every boy, in his heart, would rather steal second base than an automobile.  ~Tom Clark

Well, looks like JMJ is taking advantage of the new Yankee Stadium. Good for him, hopefully the change of scenery will do him good.

Cowboys vs. Steelers

PITTSBURGH — The Dallas Cowboys will be without their Pro Bowl running back today against Pittsburgh.

Marion Barber’s dislocated right pinkie toe, which was injured against Seattle on Thanksgiving Day, has forced him out and he will be replaced in the starting lineup by rookie Tashard Choice. Barber did not travel with the team to Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Barber was expected to be a game-time decision despite not practicing all week. But Wade Phillips didn’t sound encouraged by Barber’s availability late in the week, and his loss puts more pressure on quarterback Tony Romo to have a big performance today.

Barber, who said early last week he would be OK by today, will miss the first game of his four-year NFL career because of injury. The workload now falls on Choice, a fourth-round draft pick from Georgia Tech who has 30 carries for 147 yards (4.9 yards per carry) and no touchdowns this season. He is coming off season highs of 11 carries for 57 yards against Seattle after Barber was injured.

Part of Choice’s duties today will be helping to pick up the blitz in Pittsburgh’s aggressive scheme. The Steelers’ No. 1-ranked defense leads the NFL with 42 sacks.

Choice’s backup will be first-year player Alonzo Coleman, who was signed off the Cowboys’ practice squad Friday. Barber’s loss would have been eased some if standout rookie Felix Jones was still available. But he was placed on injured reserve Nov. 26 with a toe injury and is out for the season.

OT: The Mavs

So they blow another 4th quarter lead tonight to the Magic and lose 102-100 after leading going into the 4th. What the heck is wrong with this team? They are now 2-7 and O'fer at the AAC. They absolutely suck right now. Personally, the horrible, horrible Jason Kidd trade is going to screw this team for a while. 2 first round picks and giving up Devin Harris is hurting more than anyone thought it would. They have no depth off the bench, except for Gerald Green and he hardly ever plays. Can they get it turned around or are the Mavs now a lottery team? Discuss.

9/10 Minors Playoff thread

Ok, up for the Riders is Neftali "Gasoline" Feliz. Since the Rangers' pitching was horrendous today, let's hope Neftali can follow up Dutch (even though it was a loss) with a strong performance. Going for NW Arky, is Mosebach.

For the Redhawks, it's Derek Lee vs. Chris Gassel for the Rivercats. Hawks need this one after losing 8-4 last night. That game doesn't start till 9:"05 so should be over about the time the Riders are finishing up the win also. That 75 words yet?

Frisco Playoffs Game 1 Review

Yeah, I posted all this in the minors 9/3 fanpost but I figured I'd make my own too, just incase no one saw the post in the other thread. Anyway, WHERE THE HECK WERE THE FANS? I bet there wasn’t 2,000 there, for a playoff game? Anyway, Holland wasn’t “dominant” in the common sense with the K’s, but he looked pretty good. Had trouble throwing the change for strikes, but was still lighting the gun up at 95 for the last out of the 7th. The HR he gave up was a opp field shot that Majewski had bounce off his glove, roll along the top of the wall, and swept off by Borbon. The 2nd base ump called it a HR. Elvis made a hell of a play in the ?6th? going to his right in the hole and making a spectacular turn, jump and throw to get the guy at 1st. It was a very, very good play. Borobn and Murphy’s HR’s were both crushed over the berm in right (wind might have helped a little, but still very impressive). Before the game, I was watching Holland warm up in the pen, and his 2-seamer or cutter is absolutely nasty. Lots and lots of late movement and he was hitting whatever spot the pitching coach was telling him to hit with the fastball. I also got Neftali and Derek to sign a ball before the game. Hope that’s worth something someday. And Nolan, JD, Sundberg and some other guy were front and center behind homeplate, right in front of the group of scouts. Wonder if that is why Holland wen 108 pitches tonight? Hmmmm....
