ICYMI UCLA FB #5 in SI's preseason rankings

Surprised that we are ranked ahead of Oregon (No. 8 on their rankings)

UCLA's Myles Jack on front page of

In their CFB preview, they have an article on Myles Jack. Nice shout-out to Kenny Clark too ;) A little sample: "In high school, I just fell in love with defense, because tackling people is so fun,"

FB: Culture Change - more positive signs via recruiting?

I will not define culture change or perceived culture change but, like Euclid, let's take these as known. Now, I just wanted to make a small note on the perception of culture change in its...

I don't like them, but I sure respect them.

Poll watching: Bruins move up to #18 on the new AP poll

UCLA moves up 3 spots (not surprisingly due to the BSU beatdown at the paws of the Huskies) and Nebraska falls below the Bruins to #22. You can see pollsters making corrections--notably, Baylor is now ranked. Southern Cal is hanging on by a thread at #25. Lulz

Lame Kitten is the best coach ever & knows how to pick talented student-athletes!

Fun fact: Lane Kiffin's only recruiting class at Tennessee had 22 signees. At least 9 have been arrested at least once.— Wes Rucker (@wesrucker247) July 5, 2011

Possible 5* RB transfer to UCLA

University of Pittsburg RB Rushel Shell was recruited to Pitt by ASU coach Todd Graham. Apparently, Pitt wont release him to transfer to ASU so is considering Cal or UCLA. Look at his Scout profile here: #4 RB in class of 2012, rated 5*. From Pennsylvania

UCLA Football 2013: Recruiting vs Schedule

Based on UCLA's recruiting from last 5 years - it appears that the Bruins have the talent to play with anyone on next year's schedule.

Battle for LA: UCLA Recruiting on Frontpage of SI's CFB

Didn't read it yet since I gotta run, but hopefully it's a good read. The title "USC, UCLA classes moving in opposite directions" looks promising ;-)

About Pac-12's Horrible Officiating Problem

Great post from UCLA_beer&mathematics on Pac-12's horrible officiating problems.

Butch Jones new Vols Head Coach

Now you know why the former Cincinnati head coach turned down the Colorado gig... A good hire IMO. Like the Vols jerseys too

Mandel's Weekend Pickoff: 47 UCLA - 45 *$C

"This figures to be one of the bigger shootouts in the rivalry's history. Despite the best efforts of linebacker Anthony Barr (11 sacks), UCLA has struggled to defend against the pass, which bodes well for Trojans stars Matt Barkley and Marqise Lee. But USC's defense is easily vexed by spread offenses, and the Bruins' offense has averaged 51.7 points the past three weeks."

Live on Tv: E:60 segment on Larimore

On TV right now (for me at least), an endearing segment on Larimore discussing his decision to quit football. Heard directly from him, his parents, coaches and teammates.

Si's Mandel: The luster is gone from UCLA

On the third page of his CFOverdrive, we see this note: "The luster is gone from UCLA's once-torrid offense following an embarrassing 43-17 loss at Cal (2-4). Quarterback Brett Hundley threw four interceptions, while perennially erratic Bears counterpart Zach Maynard threw for four touchdowns against the Bruins (4-2). "It was much needed, no doubt about it," said embattled Cal coach Jeff Tedford. "It's been a tough few weeks. That's definitely going to give us a boost."

UCLA doctors study concusions

The UCLA doctor, Dr. Giza, and his team study the effects of 'sub-concussive symptons' and biomechanical forces that impact brain function.

CFO: Franklin is Mandel's No 1 Heisman contender atm

"A Heisman ballot in the making To refresh, this is a real-time top three Heisman ballot in which the only consideration is the players' performance to date. Neither preseason buzz nor the likelihood of a player actually of winning will come into play, but the quality of competition so far will. This week's ballot: 1. Johnathan Franklin, RB, UCLA: The nation's leading rusher posted consecutive 200-yard games before racking up 125 rushing yards last week against Houston. 2. Jarvis Jones, LB, Georgia. ... 3. Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville ... Note: My preseason favorite, Oregon's De'Anthony Thomas, sprang for another 220 yards on 10 touches against Tennessee Tech, but he's played three cupcakes. West Virginia's Geno Smith gets dinged for the same reason."

Si's Mandel Mailbag: Nebraska vs UCLA question

"Q: Hey Stewart, I couldn't help but notice that much of the Big Ten struggled in their season openers. Am I being too much of an unrealistic home-teamer to think that Nebraska looked like the best team? --Kyle, Omaha" Mandel Answer: "If you were to forecast the rest of the season based solely on the first weekend, then yes, absolutely, the Huskers are headed to Pasadena. ... Wait, what's that? They're headed to Pasadena this weekend? I'm very intrigued by Saturday's Nebraska-UCLA game in large part due to their opening performances. Against Southern Miss, Taylor Martinez (26-of-34, 354 yards, five TDs, no INTs) looked better than we've ever seen him as a passer. The Huskers appear to have a better receiving corps than in recent seasons. And the defense completely negated Southern Miss's passing offense. But I'm not sure the Eagles are anywhere near at the same level as they were under Larry Fedora. That's why we'll learn a lot more about Nebraska on this weekend -- as we will UCLA. Brett Hundley and the Bruins' offense looked far more dynamic against Rice than they ever did under Neuheisel -- but it was Rice. Let's see how they fare against the Blackshirts. If Nebraska dominates this one, too, then I'll start taking the Huskers' Big Ten title chances more seriously." Perhaps not really worth mentioning (as it adds little to the discussion), but it's good to keep track of when UCLA is mentioned in the national media.

Si's Mandel: blurb on UCLA v Rice

From Sunday's College Football Overtime: "For UCLA fans who had to watch the Bruins' quarterbacks the past several years, it was a sight for sore eyes: On his first college play Thursday night, redshirt freshman quarterback Brett Hundley broke off a 72-yard touchdown run against Rice. Johnathan Franklin rushed for 214 yards himself as UCLA scored its most points (49) since 2005. New offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone must be very popular in Westwood today. But that was Rice. Next up: Nebraska." On page 2, guess were not front page news yet. No biggie, these things take time.

(Dis)Honorable mention: Si's Mandel CFB Mailbag

..UCLA is one of the first schools that comes to mind when mentioning bad luck with injuries... It's not just us... Of course, this is no surprise. Still sucks though
