Today the Steelers cut Hines Ward. I believe they were the team with the most salary cap problems. Big Ben also retooled his contract to give them money to get under the cap. Cutting Ward saves the Steelers some money, and will help them to keep their young WRs. Ward has said that he wanted to stay with the Steelers and was willing to take a pay cut to make that happen. I guess the Steelers were not interested in keeping him even at a cheaper rate. Maybe cutting Ward will lead to resigning him at that cheaper rate in the long run.

Of course this is not a Steelers blog, it is a New York Giants blog. The Giants are going to lose Mario Manningham. He will be able to make more money, and get more playing time with some other team. It looks like Manningham will be one of the top free agent WRs available, and the Giants do not have enough salary cap space to keep him.

Even without Manningham the Giants have a good WR group. The top 2 WRs in Nicks and Cruz are both great. After those 2 guys the WRs are very untested. Barden has looked good at times, but the Giants have not had him on the field or even the active roster for important games. JJ has interesting skills, but has played little. Cruz is young and only has 1 season (admittedly great) in the NFL. Even Nicks is a young guy though he is the most experienced WR on the team.

This brings me to Ward. He is at the end of his career. He might not have much left in the tank at this time. However, if he wants to play and is reasonable in his salary expectations he could be good for the Giants. They could use a solid 3rd or 4th WR that can be counted on to run good shorter routes and make catches. He also seems to be the kind of guy that would be willing to help teach younger players rather then being concerned about his stats. Having a high character guy that can help make the younger WRs better could be a great thing for the Giants, if he doesn't cost to much of course.

What do you all think?

Today the Steelers cut Hines Ward.
Do people not realize how good Osi is?

There is this constant demand to trade Osi, or even just get rid of him in anyway possible. If anybody defends him then they get blasted for wanting to waste money or whatever. I don't think people realize just how good the guy has been for the Giants. I hope to shoot down some of the arguments as to why this guy should be given up for just about nothing.

All stats obtained from:

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/

1. Durability

Supposedly Osi is injury prone. The numbers just don't reflect that. Osi has played in 8 seasons, which means he has been eligible for 128 regular season games. He has played in 113 of those games, which is 88% of the total games. He only missed significant time in 2006 and 2011, and missed the 2008 season. Justin Tuck has played for 7 seasons that is 112 games. He has played in 96 of those games or 86%. Strahan played in 90% of the games in the seasons he played. Yup Osi has a durability issue doesn't he.

2. Giants career numbers.

Have any of you check Osi's numbers? Well I have.

Sacks - Osi is 4th on the Giants career sack list behind Strahan, LT, and Leonard Marshall. He has 69 Sacks. Tuck has 45.5 and is 7th on the Giants all time list.

Fumbles - Osi has 30 forced fumbles, #1 all time for the Giants. Granted those numbers have only been recorded for a little while, but that is still awesome.

3. Numbers vs his peers

Osi is 13th on the active list for sacks. I couldn't find a place to figure out how he ranks in sacks from 2003-2011.

Those numbers show he deserves to be payed. I know people will say, "he is the 3rd DE on this team". WHO CARES!! He is a top flight, close to elite DE that the Giants need to find a way to keep. Why would you ever show this guy the door when he is still at or very near the top of his game?

Revenge factor

I find the idea of there being a revenge factor in this Super Bowl to be one of the most interesting story lines. Both of these teams have changed a lot in the last 4 years. If you watch the Super Bowl 42, like I did a few days ago, you cannot help being struck by all the difference in the players from the current teams. Just from my observations, without in depth research, I would say the Giants alone have changed over half their starting line up. I am sure the backups have seen an even more drastic of a change. Even the coaching staffs have seen change, the Giants are on their 2nd DC since SB42 and the Patriots lost their OC and now he is back again in some role. Of course in this game it comes down to the head coaches and quarterbacks.

From what I have read and hear, supposedly Brady and Belichick have been steaming about the SB loss for 4 years and they are looking for revenge. Just looking at the rosters and comparing the talent I think the Giants have an edge over the Patriots. However, this revenge factor kind of scares me. It can give the Patriots and edge that they could use going into this game. If the players that were on the last SB team are pissed off and come out playing hard they might be able to use that anger to beat the Giants.

I can see the revenge idea going two different ways, if it is even a factor.

1. The Patriots are pissed. They still think about the lost perfect season. They come out mad and use that anger to pound the Giants heads in. This is of course a bad thing for us Giants fans and is what scares me about this game.

2. The Patriots are pissed. They still think about the lost perfect season. They come out mad and are overhyped causing them to make stupid mistakes. This further infuriates them, and the mistakes compound themselves and the Giants turn those mistakes into points winning the game fairly easily. This idea I like.

Is revenge even a factor in this game? Is it something to worry about?

Only work part time?

This is a tale of the poor referee. We are told how hard their jobs are. How they only work on weekends, and have to have real jobs too. So they just can't get the call right every time.

http://www.therichest.org/sports/highest-paid-nfl-referee-2011/

http://averagesalarys.info/interesting-facts-about-nfl-referee-salary/

Well, according to those website (CNN being pretty reliable) NFL referees are paid pretty good for this job. 25k to 70K or possibly higher is not chump change. Depending on where you live, you can have a comfortable life on 50k. The lowest range actually turns out to be over 1,000 dollars per game which I think is pretty good compensation for a days work.

So the idea of them being just these poor little part time workers is bunk and they should be able to turn out a better days work.

To put things into perspective, I am a Navy Reservist. I have to work 1 weekend a month for which I am paid just under 400 dollars for the 2 days work I put in. I cannot use the "I am only a part time worker" excuse and do a bad job or I can get in trouble. What about these lousy refs?

San Diego State RB Ronnie Hillman declared eligible for the draft yesterday. He isn't the largest guy, but he runs with power and speed. He is elusive when he needs to be, yet he can gain a yard when needed In many ways he reminds me of Bradshaw.

Here is his bio from the Aztecs website, and ESPN

He was 5th in college football in rushing this season with just over 1700 yards. He also had 19 rushing TDs. Last season he had 1500 yards and 17 TDs. He is also a receiving threat with 24 receptions this year.

Apparently he was told he should be drafted by the 3rd round this year so that is why he decided to go pro. With the Giants RBs aging he might be a good pickup in the end of the 2nd round or definitely in the 3rd round if he last to the Giants pick.

I pulled this list of positions drafted in the 1st through 3rd rounds during the Reese era from another post I made awhile back. As you can see Reese has drafted a high number of WR, DL, and DB in the first 3 rounds. I personally find it bizarre that the BPA always tends to be at those positions. Kind of crazy isn't it? I think that this list helps to show that Reese is a great talent evaluator but he doesn't know when to change from the scout hat to the GM hat.

1st Round - CB, S, WR, DE, CB

18%

12%

There is a huge difference in being a great scout and a great GM. A great scout can focus on certain positions or players that he likes a lot. He can plug those players he sees to the GM and other team officials to try and get those players drafted. A GM on the other hand must be able to step back from the love of a player or position and draft to complete a full team. Reese had not done a good job of building a complete team.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Imagine this scenario heading into this season.

Reese does not draft Prince because the CB position is in good shape with TT, Webster, and Ross there.

Rather then focusing on WR, DL, and DB so much the last few season Reese has slipped some LBs and OL into the mix in the first few rounds. Maybe they work out, maybe they don't OR seeing that he left the LB position very weak Reese signs a average joe outside LB. He wouldn't have to be an All Pro or superstar just a starting caliber LB. (I won't give names because I don't care who it is)

Because the LB position would have 3 veterans, Boley, Goff, Average Joe, starters Kiwi would move to the DE again. Since the DEs would be Tuck, Kiwi, JPP, and Tolefson, Reese would be able to trade Osi. Reese decided to not be his usual stubborn self and he trades Osi for the 2nd round pick he is worth.

Then Goff gets injured. Instead of having a DE that is still learning the LB position there are 2 veteran starters. Jones (or whoever) has an easier time of things because he is bracketed by veterans. Also with Kiwi, Tuck, and JPP (all decent run stoppers) on the DL the LBs have an easier time of things overall. There is no need to go with 3 safeties because there are already 2 decent LBs starting.

TT gets hurt. Since the safeties don't have to play up in this scenario they can help Ross more in coverage.

I admit the scenario isn't totally thought out. However, depth on a team is not only built through having many players at a few positions. Depth is also built through having solid players at every positions. Reese does not seem to understand that idea. Instead he has certain position he believes to be much more important than others. This causes the Giants to have large weaknesses at the positions he could care less about.

Reese needs to go because he will never build a complete roster. BPA does not exist because he will never draft outside of the positions that he values.

In Sunday's game against the Redskins Jason Pierre-Paul had 11 solo tackles and 5 assists. For any player that is a high number of tackles. The Giants as a team recorded 64 tackles, and JPP had 11 of those which comes out to 17% of the teams total tackles. The Giants had 22 tackle assists, so JPP had roughly 25% of those.

We have also see a lot of JPP chasing down RB and WRs deep into the secondary. These players have bypassed the other linemen, the linebackers, and are in the defensive backs area yet JPP has to chase them down. He often does this after pushing several yards past the line of scrimmage in pursuit of the QB. While I like the fact that JPP is Superman, I wonder if him having to do all this is best for the team. Instead of using his energy to destroy QBs he is chasing down RBs.

JPP is doing what the Linebackers and Safeties should be doing. He should be blowing up the play behind the line of scrimmage and the LBs should be cleaning up the tackles. JPP should not have to blow up the play and clean it all up down the field. While I love the talent and desire that JPP shows, I think that he has to make all these plays in the greatest indicator of just how bad these LBs are.

Jerry Reese has had 5 drafts for the Giants. He took over the Giants General Manager (GM) position January 16th, 2007. Reese is now responsible for most of the Giants roster. I count 8 players left on the roster from 2006, which would be the last season Ernie Accorsi would be responsible put the roster together. These are the holdovers from the EA era.

OG David Diehl

RB Brandon Jacobs

DE/LB Matthias Kiwinuka

QB Eli Manning

OT Kareem McKenzie

OG Chris Snee

DE Justin Tuck

DE Osi Umenyiora

Every one of those players is either a starter or in the case of Jacobs in a significant role on the team. Mostly I just wanted to show these players to show how big the turnover on the Giants has been. Reese has changed the team a lot which is not a surprise in the NFL these days.

Reese wants to build through the draft from what I can tell. The Giants don't make flashy free agent signings, in fact most of their FA signings can be seen as sort of bargin basement.

I know that I have been unsatisfied with some of Reese's drafting. He seems to be intent on taking the "best player available (BPA)" all the time rather then drafting at positions the Giants need. So just how successful has this strategy been? Also has he really neglected certain positions in the draft by just drafting the BPA?

I will look at each draft over the last 5 years to see how the players have turned out, and at the end see how many players were drafted at each position. I want to know how much impact the Reese drafties are having on the Giants right now.

Bolded player names are those that are still with the team.

2007

1st round

Aaron Ross (CB) - Has started 31 of the 54 games in which he has played as a Giant. He has 9 interceptions (INTs) in his career. He is somewhat limited, but is a good #3 CB, and a solid spot starter.

2nd round

Steve Smith (WR) - Started 26 of the 46 games he played for the Giants. He started slow, but had 107 catches with 7 TDs in this 3rd season. He suffered a season ending injury in his 4th season before becoming a FA and moving to the Eagles.

3rd round

Jay Alford (DT) - Started 3 of the 32 games he played for the Giants. He only spent 2 seasons with the Giants and is out of football right now.

4th Round

Zak DeOssie (LB) - Has not started any games, but has played in 69 games as a special teamer and long snapper. Went the 2008 and 2009 pro bowl as a special teams player.

5th Round

Kevin Boss (TE) - Started 45 of 58 games in the 4 years he played for the Giants. Had 119 catches and scored 18 TDs as a Giant.

6th Round

Adam Koets (OT) - Started 4 of 11 games played. Has not made much of an impact.

7th Round

Michael Johnson (S) - Started 35 of 49 games in 4 years with the Giants. He had 3 INTs.

7th Round

Ahmad Bradshaw (RB) - Has started 17 of 63 games played. Has 601 carries for 2844 yards, 92 receptions for 721 yards and 21 total TDs. Has had problems with fumbles in the past, but is a dynamic runner.

2008

1st Round

Kenny Philips (S) - Has started 25 of 39 games played. Has 5 INTs.

2nd Round

Terrell Thomas (CB) - Started 34 of 44 games played. Suffered a season ending injury this year, but was possibly the Giants best CB before getting hurt. Started each of the last 2 season with 5 INTs each season, has a total of 11 career INTs.

3rd Round

Marrio Manningham (WR) - started 22 of 42 games played. 134 receptions for 1963 yards with 14 TDs. Has the potential to make big plays, but also seems to have a lot of mental lapses.

4th Round

Bryan Kehl (LB) - started 3 of 31 games played for the Giants. Had little to no impact.

5th Round

Jonathan Goff (LB) - started 20 of 37 games for the Giants. Started all 16 games in 2010, and seemed to be developing into a good MLB before being injuried this year.

6th Round

Andre Woodson (QB) - never played for any team

6th Round

Robert Henderson (DE) - never played for any team

2009

1st Round

Hakeem Nicks (WR) - started 23 of 32 games played for the Giants. Has 154 receptions for 2254 yards with 20 TDs. He is the Giants best WR, and seems to be developing into one of the best in the NFL.

2nd Round

Clint Sintim (LB) - started 1 of 24 games played with 1 sack. He was drafted out of position, and has been unable to make room in the rotation for himself. Suffered a season ending injury this year.

2nd Round

William Beatty (OT) - started 11 of 29 games played. He has taken over the starting left tackle position this season. Has done a good job so far with the position.

3rd Round

2011

1st Round

Prince Amukamara (CB) - injured

Reese has had 39 total picks with the Giants. There are a total of 24 picks still with the team in some way (not counting Chad Jones). That means 61.5% of his picks are still with the Giants.

Now a breakdown of the positions by percentage (some numbers rounded so might not equal complete 100% punter not included because who cares):

There is a perception that Reese has not drafted enough LBs, yet that is the position with the most players drafted. DL, not suprisingly was the 2nd highest.

The first 3 rounds are the ones were a team is supposed to get the true impact players. The Giants have drafted a lot of the same positions.

1st Round - CB, S, WR, DE, CB

2nd Round - WR, CB,OT, LB, DT, DT

12%

The Giants under Reese have drafted a lot of WRs, DL, and DB. Inspite of LBs being the highest number of players drafter overall, in the first 3 rounds only 1 has been drafted.

I don't know what all the point to this is. I just was interested in what positions the Giants have drafted. Reese has been here for quite some time now. He has to start providing impact players for the Giants. Maybe the BPA thing isn't always the best because it seems to get the Giants a lot of the same positions. Maybe there needs to be some reaching down the list a few spots to fill positions of need. I am not talking about drafting a center with the 5th overall pick or something, but why not draft an LB or OL in the 2nd round if they are almost the BPA.

3rd round

2009

1st Round

DB

5%

8%

10%

13%

5%

15%

18%

8%

10%

5%

There is a perception that Reese has not drafted enough LBs, yet that is the position with the most players drafted. DL, not suprisingly was the 2nd highest.

The first 3 rounds are the ones were a team is supposed to get the true impact players. The Giants have drafted a lot of the same positions.

1st Round - CB, S, WR, DE, CB

2nd Round - WR, CB,OT, LB, DT, DT

3rd Round - DT, WR, WR, TE, S, WR

QB

RB

WR

TE

OL

DL

LB

CB

S

0

0

29%

6%

6%

24%

6%

18%
