Anchor Of Gold Signs of the Apocalypse

From ESPN.com:

"There is no doubt that Vanderbilt is the surprise team of the spring and summer on the recruiting trail and James Franklin and his staff should be commended for the job their doing thus far," ESPN Recruiting Coordinator Craig Haubert said.

These are uncharted waters for the Commodores. Vanderbilt has brought aboard only one four-star prospect In the history of the ESPNU 150 (since 2006). If Bowles and Kimbrow do pledge that would bring Vandy to five four stars in this class.

Anchor Of Gold Donate to the National Commodore Club. Do It.

Vuheader_medium
The Administration has stepped up by investing in great coaches and improved facilities.  The Coaches have stepped up by recruiting better players and building teams that can compete on a national stage - and, in the case of Coach Stallings, by contributing $100,000 of his own salary to pay for a trip to Australia.  Now, it's time for alumni and fans to step up by donating to the NCC.

If you spend much of your time on Anchor of Gold, you obviously support Vanderbilt athletics with your time and energy.  So, why should you donate your money too?

Anchor Of Gold Postgame: Vanderbilt 59, Nebraska 49

Don't let the final score fool you. This one was ugly. With apologies to John Jenkins, the Vanderbilt offense failed to show up for the first 35 minutes of the game. This is the type of performance that will not cut it against better opponents, but was just good enough to beat a team picked to finish near the bottom of the Big 12.

A lot of the credit for the near upset goes to Doc Sadler for confounding the Dores with his two-center lineup and sound defensive strategy. Taking a page from the Murray St. playbook, Sadler's team used the entire shot clock on virtually every possession. This had the desired effect of preventing the Commodores from developing any offensive rhythm, and the Huskers held a slim lead throughout most of the game. Unfortunately for Nebraska, waiting 35 seconds to put up a shot only works if you make your shots. The Huskers shot 29% from the field in the second half and thier last field goal of the game came with 7:49 to play.

Anyway, what happens in Puerto Rico, stays in Puerto Rico.  As far as the NCAA Selection Committee knows, this was a double-digit win over a major conference team on a neutral court.  Great job, Dores!

If you are not a member of the Selection Committee and interested in seeing which Dores stood out for the right and wrong reasons, keep reading...

Anchor Of Gold South Carolina Beats Kentucky 66-62

While this takes a little bit of the luster off of Saturday's trip to Rupp, it means that Vanderbilt and Tennessee will be playing for first place in the East - at least until Saturday.  It also makes Vanderbilt's convincing win at South Carolina look even more impressive.

If we're lucky, President Obama will give Bruce Pearl and his guys a call tomorrow morning.
