Rocky Top Talk My Signing Day Experience

I was very fortunate to attend the Letterman/VIP signing day celebration in the West Club at Neyland Stadium last night. This particular banquet/party occurred after Dooley's media tour and conference but before the longer, more accessible gathering downstairs with Bob Kesling. I had a great time and the access to the coaches and administrators was unparallelled by any event I have been to yet as well as a far more candid setting. I learned quite a bit about what has been going on, what is going on now and where we are going in a media-less setting where things were slightly more unfiltered.

For those that may be interested, here is what I gathered:

Rocky Top Talk State Of The Class: A List Of Tennessee's 2012 Recruits - UPDATED

Mainly to get this all straight in my own head and for the benefit of others that follow recruiting, I thought I would run down who we have, who we might lose, and who we might gain when the faxes start rolling in on Wednesday. More to the point and to make you all jealous, who I might be hearing Dooley telling me about when I'm eating dinner at the signing day banquet in Knoxville. Ha!

So, without further adieu, here is the breakdown along with the ESPN.com link for each player. Also check out Brad's stuff for more info. The star ratings are from 247's system as they are most easily found. I don't have memberships to the recruiting sites, but I know how to troll around for info so away we go:

BREAKING : UT source confirms that John Palermo will be next defensive line coach for Vols.

via Austin Ward's Twitter

Great hire imo and from all accounts, Dooley's primary target from the start.

Coached at Minnesota, Wisconsin, head coach at Austin Peay, Notre Dame, Miami, my brother-in-law at Tennessee Tech, D-line at Redskins and then MTSU.

Played at Florida State

Roy can always be counted on for the occasional good column.

Wonder what the bammers will come up with next?

This is more on a topic we have beat to death around here but a majority of Tennessee fans don't seem to factor this in when they call for Dooley's firing.

A list of the top 150 prospects from the 2008 class as ranked by ESPN along with a "Where are they now?" Tennessee's ONLY prospect on the list? Rod Wilks.

Question For RTT Regulars:

I've been trolling VN since the DC thing started and most of it seems to be unsubstantiated garbage, but I am aware that some over there are considered reliable. Does anybody know who or have an opinion on this?

The following players are no longer with Tennessee:

LB Robert Nelson, DT Arthur Jeffery, & LB Martaze Jackson.

Per Jimmy Hyams

Is there a single Kiffin recruit left from his first class? One?

BREAKING: Big news on Tennessee's defensive coordinator's search: ($) Linky

Wes Rucker at 247

WE HAVE HIRED SAL SUNSERI AS DC

Update:

This is now being confirmed by Austin Ward:

"@Vols_Beat According to a UT source, Alabama outside linebackers coach Sal Sunseri is the new defensive coordinator for the Vols."

Confirmations abound now. Deal is worth 700-800k per year.

BREAKING: According to a source, North Carolina's Sam Pittman is in line to replace Harry Hiestand as Vols offensive line coach.

Indicates Hiestand was encouraged to move on and seems to be a great hire on the face of things...

Tennessee: Sources within UT athletics confirm that Tennessee is "finalizing contract negotiations with Randy Shannon". Plan is to announce on Monday. Sources close to Shannon tell us "security for Randy" is the primary item still being negotiated.

Football Scoop

Against my better judgement, I'm starting to believe this. I'll commence dancing in the street on Monday.......

Rocky Top Talk Bring Back Fulmer

There, now that my hook title got your attention, I'll go ahead and say I'm still 100% behind Dooley. Derek is gonna have to get 8 wins next season though or the process starts again. In my opinion, a minimum of 8 keeps his job, 10+ gets an extension. With Weis leaving Florida today, there is one game that may have just gotten easier.

I have digressed though, I would like to bring Phillip Fulmer back into the Tennessee family. Only as Offensive Line Coach and possibly Associate Head Coach. Let's face it, it's sad to see Coach Fulmer screaming MANBEARPIG!!! everytime a job opens up only to have no one take him serial. Nobody he wants to coach for is going to hire him so is it possible he could swallow his pride, squash his ego and get back into coaching at the professional love of his life?

I won't suggest that he should not have been fired in 2008. I agreed at the time that he should have been done as our head coach and I still do, I just wish it had been handled better by both sides. That is all in the past now though and if there is ever an advantageous time for Fulmer to return it is now and in the capacity I described.

Release From UT Sports

Moves make sense if we happen to be getting Larry Porter (!!!!!!!!!11). Let Chaney control his QB's. I guess this might leave a return of Tee Martin out in the cold though.

WR Da'Rick Rogers is not technically suspended, but he's not currently on Vols' active roster. Can earn his way back. Not dismissed.

Another Janzen Jackson?

"Multiple sources indicating Da'Rick Rogers could be looking at a Janzen Jackson situation -- not technically a suspension or a dismissal."

Amazing how much they are defending this garbage. I guess we'll "have to leave that wound open until next year". Or just remember that they're Vandy and we'll get 50 on them in the first quarter.

I'll be there holding a sign with a Dooley quote on it........

Rocky Top Talk Derek Dooley is the next Robert Neyland

I figured since we spent so much time wildly criticizing Derek Dooley after Arkansas we might as well go all the way and flip it to the opposite extreme after the Vandy win. The head coach is solely responsible for wins and losses after all. No one else.

Derek Dooley is the most bestest coach that has ever walked a football sideline11111111111111111111111! Aside from VolBrian's greatness that is.

I must say I'm completely shocked by the level and degree of the alleged actions here. We've seen many different forms of cheating over the last few decades in general and few years in particular, but this, this is just incredible.

Rocky Top Talk BREAKING NEWS: The NCAA looks to restart "The Streak"

Given the nature of Oregon's alleged violations and the likelihood that all of their wins last season will be vacated, it looks as if the NCAA is going to do yours truly a solid by restarting The Streak.

According to multiple sources referenced behind the paywall at ESPN.com, Oregon is indeed very likely to get slapped with violations for paying a Texas-based "street agent" for players.

So, my question to you fine folks is as follows:

Poll
If Oregon is forced to vacate it's 2010 victory over Tennessee, will I once again be able to consider myself undefeated in Neyland until I see a loss?
Absolutely! Revive the streak!
