The Phinsider from PFT - NO agrees to termsto trade R Bush to the PHINS

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/07/28/saints-dolphins-agree-to-terms-on-reggie-bush-trade/

dependent on a new contract yada yada yada - now this is a deal i can get behind....

The deal hinges on the Dolphins working out an acceptable contract with Bush.  Due to earn a base salary of $11.8 million in 2011, Bush will have to take a pay cut.  (Of course, if he agrees to a long-term deal with the Dolphins, he could actually pocket $11.8 million in salary and bonuses in 2011, or more

The Phinsider a tale of blah!!! why make this trade? aka the return of the stash

Ok these numbers are going to be pretty obvious, but they are telling.... we've heard what a great game manager kyle orton.... so i grabbed his last 5 games against NE/NYJ/BLT & Pitt and matched like games (road vs home) against Henne...

Can someone explain to me - what kyle orton has done to warrant any kind of interest... sure he puts up big numbers against the likes of the NFC west - but what has he really done against the baddest defenses of the AFC?

and lets not forget that 2 admins in denver have decided that TT is a better option at QB then orton

and that was before the bears bailed on him for cutler (anyone want to rear mirror not making a play for him?)

And please tell me - what team has ever had real success with actual competition at the qb spot? so what will this do for a team and the morale of the team - where henne has had great success running the offseason work outs and you go out and reward him by supplanting him with a dud like orton...

And if they really have the *&%#(s) to make this trade - why don't these losers go all the way and see what they can get for Henne - so at least the next admin has an extra pick or two to work with next year.

btw: in case you didn't figure it out - orton is player 1 and henne is player 2

The Phinsider coaching choice smell kind of like old times

per nfl network rumor mill that the fins won't sign cowher

Why? A source close to Cowher says that Bill - along with an annual $7 to $8 million salary - would want his own personnel staff. This would basically mean a total revamping of the front office and coaching staff. But Ross, according to this source, likely wants to retain general manager Jeff Ireland. Ireland and Ross reportedly have a great rapport with one another. Ireland also has close ties to Carl Peterson, who is a personal friend and business partner with Ross.

sort of reminds me of when the phins traded for Pep.... IIRC the other option wanted 10 mil a year and saban felt that going with the cut rate guy sans a 2nd round pick was the better option....

isn't giving up the shot at an Elite NFL coach and taking  a shot on an unknown college coach or worse still keeping a mediocre one about the same? Is Randy Ireland really worth not getting cowher, who btw: has close ties with peterson - having been signed by him as a player and hired by him to coach.

The Phinsider another indictment on why they need to fire the coach now

His practice Wednesday, Pennington said, "was one of the best practices I've ever had as a Dolphin. I feel so good physically. I think I can make all the throws you need to make in this offense, and I'm really comfortable with what we're being asked to do this week.''

Read more: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/peter_king/11/12/week10/index.html#ixzz1590VCKAg

ok - lets read this quote very carefully and see if we can find out, how this staff has proven itself incompetent....

got it???

yup, pennington just said that he can make all the throws you need to make in this offense....EXCUSE ME?? DID I READ THAT CORRECTLY???

now supposedly this staff said they've been grooming chad henne to be the long term QB position.. got that... big kid, big arm, has physical skills few qb's can match... you go 13 games last year with him as your qb and then go into the offseason with the belief that he is your qb...  and coming out of the offseason you design an offense where chad pennington can make all the throws in the offsense... a guy know for short controlled touch passes, who can't throw outside the hashes.

no real disrespect intended here to the penne... but there is no football world where chad henne and chad penne have the same football skills... penne is just incapable of making some of the throws henne makes... and he should be doing frequently (his strengths afterall)

so what does  this really mean?... it means that henning and sparano spenta 3 years with the idea that henne will be THE QB of the team... they spent and entire off season with the belief that Henne would be the QB for the upcoming season and yet ... they don't modify their offense to the skill set of the most important player on the field... seriously

what does that tell us.... these guys are NOT the best nor the brightest....
it's time to move on tony and dan... lets go get rob ryan and have some fun......

The Phinsider hey lets talk about our new old qb

let me preface this by saying that i have the exact numbers i'm going to approximate in this post on my old computer but i'm too lazy to dig it out, charge up the battery and then wait the 17 1/2 minutes to boot it up.... so all you noodle lovers can savage me for making things up and being totally inaccurate, and i won't have a defense... but these points are mostly accurate if that makes any sense....

ok - so the current staff has decided to light a fire under the team (yup - tony i'd avoid using that fire word anymore)

and their saviour is none other then the old noodle arm...

well let's look into our new fuel for a firing (ahem, tony?? tony?? wait, ok i understand you have to go) up of the team.

the guy who is suppose to lead this team to the playoffs and beat some playoff caliber teams along the way is 2-5 in the playoff with a pretty poor td to int ratio... and if you delve deeper into the penne stats... his record against teams with a winning record is in the 40% neighborhood... so what tony has turned to is a guy who will help a team beat weaker teams, but doesn't have the game to compete against the elite... as a side note... i believe henne beat the bills, the viks, the pack, and bungles.... but lost to bmore, ne, nyj, & pitt... so on the surface this appears to be well...

status quo... nice move tony...

you all can give me the numbers but i haven't seen the post bmore numbers but henne was top 5?? for completing 3rd and longs (7 or more) while at the 1/2 way point 2 years ago during penne's magical run he was 1 for 32 and finished in 7 for 50 area.... so this will be a clear improvement.... however penne's completion percentage on these plays is/was super high 80 percent range...  so what does this tell us... stat padder  pennington is a guy who will take what is given to him, but when he's up against quality d's that don't give him much then you get nothing... see his record in the playoffs...

i have some other fuel to throw on the bonfire (hey dan... you don't like fire?) but i'll save that for the retorts...

yeah - i know you all are going to say leadership, leadership, leadership.... but what do you expect when you take a 25 year old qb and you saddle him with a back up qb, who already has a history of sabotaging one young qb already, that brought a first time head coach to glory... oddly enough during the preseason and camps this same qb is off making speeches to  the team when he's been around the block long enough to know what that does to a young qb's standing with his teammates...

so lets all get on board the future of the dolphins, the heir to marino, and get everyone FIRED up...

The Phinsider Fire Tony now!!!!

Desperate times call for desperate measures... and since Tony has decided that times are desperate and that he will jeopardize the future progress and development of the franchise for some futile short term ego trip, it's time for Mr Ross to step in and save the team...

Mr Ross

it is not Henne's fault that you have a terrible decision maker as a head coach. Tony has very little patience nor is he willing to stick to long term development... lets look at some of tony's decisions....

Special team play has been below average at best since tony took over... little risk, little innovation, and overall poor play... yet tony waits until year 3 to fire coach bono.... when during the off season one of the best ST coaches in the league is on the open market.... all the while he is axing position coaches left and right.

it obviously was chad henne's fault that you axed the only 2nd TE on the team capable of playing in the NFL because you though you'd sneak him through waivers to save some money... and this with the fact that by your own admission ~%40 of the offense involves a 2 TE set...

Even though you were a former OC .... the play calling is terrible this year... game management is terrible, clock management is even worse... and there has been very little adaptation to the offense based on the talent levels of the team... by that i mean ... ahem... you decide that d bess is the best slot receiver in the game... but how many plays do you run with 3 receiver sets??? what happened to feed the beast(s)...

so it was a QB issue that baltimore held the ball for 38 minutes.... that the patsies ran the ball down the teams throat with a danny woodhead... really... hmmm.... maybe had you not let personal differences effect your judgement you wouldn't have cut matt roth ... who appears to be a top 5 SSOLB right now... in stead of the rookie who has issues consistently setting the edge...

and someone please explain to me the plan for the interior of the offensive line??? i know john jerry and Ritchie... (what's that guy) are the flavor of the year... but haven't we been here before with smiley and thomas/murphy?? and is it any wonder the team is unable to run the ball .... when you tweak blowup the o-line every camp... history says great lines are made by long term consistency... as an o-line coach one would believe (hmmm) and could you please explain the jake grove decision.... which kind of strikes me as similar to the matt roth one...

so before you make yet another knee jerk decision that will have long term negative effects on the team and it's future...why don't you do a little self scouting and maybe look at the play calling and offensive personnel moves before you yank the guy you've dubbed the future...

and tony i don't want to break it to you ... but the team has missed the playoffs this year... even if you put your beloved penne into the game... you are 4-4  and 2-4 vs the AFC... you have zero tiebreakers and 11-5 is the minimum needed to make the playoffs this year... meaning the team will have to win out to go to the playoffs...

So Mssr Ross, please put tony out of his misery and axe him now... don't wait for the off season, when we all know that you will be installing Kaiser Karl... save the franchises short and long term future now... and get in the bidding for KK's buddy the chin before Jerry steals him.

The Phinsider Serious Question - has there been any improvement since Saban?

ok - so i was having a discussion with a bills fan - talking about the bills 3 year rebuilding plan ...

which got us on the topic of IF the triad has actually improved the team in the last three years... i sort of plan on doing a more detail post once i get some time, but i wanted to get this out there....

first lets assume that Cam was in over his head... and team the triad took over from was saban's...

and that you evaluate a draft after 3 years ... then it's safe to assume the triad has had enough time to imprint there plan upon the team...

Saban left a team that was one of the oldest teams in the league, with QB issues...

so lets do a quick comparison

QB - then harrington and no future - now Henne and maybe thigpen... but the reports that management may panic and switch to penne in order to bridge the gap until thiggy is ready... well henne has the potential to be a much better improvement over harrington - but thiggy would be a push.

rb - saban - rick and ron ... now... ... and what is worse is there really isn't anything behind Rick and Ron and they are both 4 years older.

wr - initial thoughts would be ... slam dunk for this admin... but don't forget that saban found this guy named welker that cam gave away to a division rival... chambers while old at the time was an above average receiver...

o-line - well saban had a decent one... the issue for him was he couldn't keep the interior guys healthy (and when they were they could RUN BLOCK) so while i think Long is an improvement - i think the interior is much worse now then it was 4 years ago... heck i'm pretty sure the interior today is worse then it was one year ago.

d-line Sabans crew was vets... but they held up well... once again because of age health was always and issue ...

but the saban d-line had play makers... and aside from starks...i'm not sure i've seen the phins d-line have any impact on the other teams offensive game plan...  while the current team has youth and potential (odrick)... i'm not sure the o-line is better then 2 years ago ... let alone sabans.

o-line - slam dunk for saban... other then the dansby - i'm not sure the current team has any LB's who are playmakers... yes wake could rival JT for rushing the passer ... be he's a disaster at setting the edge, playing the run and sniffing out screens ...

db's ... hmmm this one is interesting saban had bell vs bell 4 years older... and CC at FS has the potential to be better then anything saban put out there...... but i'll have to say Davis is leaps ahead of goodman & and madison, but all that said ...

there is a serious lack of playmakers and ball hawks on the current roster.. in fact this teams inability to create turn overs is likely the biggest factor in why this team is a 500 team vs a playoff team....

so the reality, as i see it anyways, is saban left a 8-8 type team and 3 years later the current admin has an 8-8 team... saban left a team with tons of vets, but many of them where serious play makers who could take over a game, and this team has youth but few play makers. Saban left a team without a long term answer at QB and this admin has a team with some serious questions at QB.

Saban had a iffy record drafting, but did very well in the FA market... this admin while having some serious disaster picks in the first 2 rounds has drafted well, but has been a disaster in the FA market.

so i hope to take some input from this thread and do a follow up in a couple weeks... but i'm starting to fall on the side of my uncle finny ... and start to believe that maybe ross has to bring in Kaiser Karl P, who can put his friend the Chin in charge next year....

Poll
has the current admin addressed and improve on the team Saban left?
yes - no brainer ... i'm not even sure why you are asking

they might have - if some of the young guys reach their billing

hard to tell - they feel better but the record doesn't show

no - this front office hasn't addressed the issues saban left

The Phinsider a few gripes - and p*&S poor comments

ok - let me get this out of the way... i know they were playing the patriots and you have to expect some cough/cough biased poor officiating, but how do you miss a woodhead blocking J Allen for 5-7 yards IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BACK  across the point of attack RIGHT INFRONT OF THE BALL CARRIER.... hmm any surprise the guy goes for 103 yards if you aren't going to call that.... worst call of the year....

next - i'm not sure who should get axed first this week.... Barbie Carpenter - Coach Bono - or S   L    O                W  brandon fields.... i always though he was plodding in past years but he must have added weight to his shoes, because watching him punt is like they are running the camera at 48 frames per second.....

ok - watching the defensive line and LB's play right now - you can't tell me that L Dautson is a better player the C Grant or M Douglas, or that Barbie Carpenter is better then Charlie Anderson at anything and especially special teams blocking.... I think it is becoming clearer that the reason parcells is walking away right now AND advertising for a new position is that ross put the money crunch on him and BP said bye... and Ireland was left to cut his veteran depth....

now this one - i'm not too sure about - i haven't seen anyone pick up J Grove, so maybe he is hurt worse then was let one... and i'll give berger some credit that the line has fewer mistakes (penalties, wrong snap counts) but when it comes to blocking, let alone opening a hole by moving people, it is different weight classes...

J Ireland - Please, Please, bring Jake back, so we can watch the team run the ball again.... but i suspect that J was a casualty of the $$$ crunch i speak of above....

And I may have CLS syndrom right now.... but other then the cincy game, i'm not sure this team is favored in any of the next ~7 games.... and that scares me... if Sparano doesn't get this ship righted SOON and get this team to 8 wins (which is by no means certain) it is very possible that Ross will use bloated expectations as a reason to turn this team over to his HIGHness - KING KARL Petterson.... and we'll have to suffer through more years of WannyCAmamoron stupidity....

so i'm begging you please Tony - PLEASE fix this mess NOW.... I can't see Bess playing for the JETS...

btw: my vote for most overrated dolphin - polite... if your job is full back you have to be a better blocker....

The Phinsider what vets will the phins resign

tonight...tomorrow?

as of tonight at midnight i believe any vet who signs a contract is paid on a non guaranteed  basis... and there will be a whole new free agency period beginning tonight across the league.

what FA will the phins pick up?

the obvious choices are

J Grove... berger wasn't terrible against buffalo but it was pretty clear he had issues moving stroud and opening holes up the middle... the fins gained little yardage running through the A hole which is in contrast to last season. if healthy i think it'll be a very important signing to get grove back ASAP with Williams, Jenkins, & Wolford coming up the next 3 games.

C Grant... with odrick banged up and the team already thin on the d-line, it'll be important to gain some veteran help along the d-line

M Douglas .... see one up ... but he's 1 step down from Grant.

last week - i though they might consider a DB - but i don't see that happening right now...

LB -

i could see charlie anderson back... - he's a solid option but see him at a lower rung then getting so ILB help in case Crowder's mystery injury doesn't heal.

who else is out there that the fins might bring in?

The Phinsider my 53 man roster - finally got around to writing it up

Ok – here’s my 53 man roster projection…

I may update this a little after the dallas game, which will have an impact on the bubble players but likely won’t move the core numbers around. It’s usually a fun exercise to get a feel for how to put together a roster and some of the tough decisions that do need to be made. Now all of this is made tougher by the lack of information out there on the long term injuries to w allen, nate garner, & now C Crowder… and yes, the testing of Anderson to ILB and moving Misi to the weak side makes me believe that the team is creating a plan for and extended absence by CC…

Offense

QB (3) – Starter – Henne….

Back-ups – Penne & thiggy

Henne sure looks the part at times… heck he’s even shown an ability to take some off the ball on occasion this camp... that said (and I am a believer) I think he is still a season away from being a SB level QB… which is ok since the defense looks to be a year away also… but the light does appear to be getting brighter…

Pat White’s surprise play in game 3 makes me believe that the team would like to trade on of their 2 backups and not give up on pat just yet, but I don’t know if that will happen… QB I’d most like to see go Penne – likely most value and least long term value. Thiggy will more then likely be the one because of his age. If they do keep White, I would like to see the team do things with him that make short QB’s better… (ie the flutie offense)… roll him out more… push the middle open…  and maybe, just maybe, at least once during his career run a spread offense with him….

RB –(4) Starter Ronnie Brown

Backups/starter – Williams, Cobbs, & Polite

Pretty easy group… the only hiccup is if the team feels Hilliard provides enough ST value to keep an extra back… my guess is no and I expect the team to sign one or two FA for the practice squad to eat practice reps and hopefully develop into a replacement for this OLD unit.

TE – (2) Starter Fassano/Martin

Backup – None

Didn’t think Haynos was going to make the team before the injury (surprising because I was a supporter last year) but martin’s skill set was missing from last year’s team and neither Haynos nor Nalbone match it…so they’ll go with 2 and see if they can get Nalbone on the PS… if not they’ll check out the WW and FA for a PS member.

WR (6)– Starters Marshall/Hartline

Backup – Bess, Moore

Backup bubble – Wallace & Turner ….. pruitt

When you only keep two TE’s nor the luxury 5th back, you get to keep an extra WR… and the physical potential at WR far outreaches the potential of either the 5th back or 3rd TE… but if there is a waiver wire acquisition then Wallace & Turner are the bubble boys… Moore’s running with the firsts pretty much means he’s the 4th, but the upside of Wallace is much higher and neither him nor turner are likely to be available for the PS if they are cut… they will be poached. Pruitt is PS  possible if they team loses turner or Wallace. If I was rating right now – I’d go with this order Wallace – Moore – Turner… but I’m unencumbered by external factors (some relevant – personalities, some not – draft status) and I expect the team rates them Turner – Moore – Wallace….

O-Line (10)

Starters – Long, Garner, Grove, Incognito, Carey

Backups – Jerry & Berger

Bubble Subs in cut order – Procter, Murtha, & Thomas

Missing the team not on the bubble – Gardner – bad, bad, bad camp … after a great camp last year and making the team he played himself off the team no idea what happened to him… hartline – I haven’t seen what the coaches seem to…

If Garner isn’t healthy they will take 9… if Garner is healthy enough to make the roster it is very possible that they keep 9 and Thomas would be the guy I expect them to cut…

Defense

D-Line (8)

Starters – Langford, Starks, Odrick

Backups – Grant, Soliai, McDaniel

Bubble backups in cut order – Douglas, Dotson ……. Baker, Staley

This is a battle that will be decided against dallas… Dotson has always shined in the fourth game… and has shown a knack for making big plays… Baker has shown an ability to get penetration, has versatility, but also consistently gets pushed back… Douglas and Staley are vets… Staley I can’t say I’ve noticed and am not a 100% sure he’s still around… but the team knows what they will get with douglas… BTW it is possible they keep 9 here if they are concerned about possible NFL suspensions to Grant (4 game star caps limbo & off field behavior issues)

LB (8)

Starters – Alama-Francis, Dansby, Crowder, Wake

Backups – Misi, Anderson, & Dobbins

Bubble Backup Micah Johnson

Bubble in cut order if Crowder is seriously hurt …. Walden, Folsom, & Spitler

Won’t make the team - Moses

Micah, while I have on the bubble has made the team… he has the size the team likes and while they do clock players at the combine …. He’s and example of why they should clock them with their pads on because he moves well even with a slow 40 time… the final roster spot on the team likely comes down to J Allen vs. E Walden – both are ST aces… and if W Allen is going to be kept on the active roster, then one of the STers may have to go. Folsom making the team is not out of the question… he seems to move well and understands his position, but i haven’t “FELT” him out there… but then none of the bubble guys have shown much…Moses while he has shown some potential to make plays… an injury in camp has likely doomed him… plus the no team uses every pick in their last draft on a LB if you are happy with what you have.

D-Backs (9)

Starters – V Davis, W Allen, Clemons, Bell

Back-ups – S Smith, N Carroll, Sapp, Culver

Bubble – in cut order – J Allen, …….  R Jones, Amaya, & Ness

All of this is predicated on W Allen being healthy… if not move everyone up one spot.

Jones hasn’t looked good in the preseason and I suspect they will gamble that he will fall through to the practice squad and if not Amaya will, and they will feel comfortable having one development/backup there… Culver is a capable back-up for safety and W Allen is the wild card there… I supect that Carroll will make a move into at least a time share very soon (dime coverage) and then will move up the chart if he flashes… Smith has looked poor since about ½ way through last season… frequently getting beaten deep and run support has always been a weakness… I’m not saying that all is lost for him… I’m just saying that he looks like the 3rd best long term option at CB for the teams (davis… Carroll) and a demotion is in the very near future for him….I just don’t see Smith ending the season as the starter. As I stated earlier the battle for the 53rd spot is likely between walden and J Allen and Allen’s standing has little to do with what position he plays …

STers (3) I’ll let you all figure it out…

But for the life of me – I really do not understand how or why they can’t get a berger, garner, or grove to be the LSer and have greater roster flexibility…

Last 5 on #49Murtha, #50Johnson, #51Dotson ,#52Thomas,#53 J Allen

First 5 cut – #54Walden, #55 R Jones,#56 Nalbone,#57 Baker,#58 Douglas

The Phinsider child please

In case anyone missed this little gem

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJIHW7IV53Q

but can anyone around these parts guess who was covering mssr. stokely?

should it come as a surprise to any dolphin fan that the former dolphin chris crocker #42 left stokely to help cover marshall on a pass to the 40 with 15 seconds left in the game... well the guy is two for two in losing opening games for his team...

yes roy williams did blow containment to take a wack at marshall two, but i thought it was pretty dang funny that crocker's guy goes to the house uncovered...

so all you i have 100% faith that sparano/ireland can do no wrong.... child please.

The Phinsider Serious Question - should Henne have played some of the 4th

Not to turn this into a henne vs penne thread - but since the admin has stated that they need to get henne more work this year so that he's ready to take over BY game 1 2010.... I ask a serious question... down 19-0 with 7:30 minutes left in the 4th quarter, should sparano have put in Henne?

Couple of points. Henne needs the work, and real time experience with the actual first teamers.

Penne has a history of injuries and frailness. do you need to subject him to more punishment in a game that is esentially over.

or was it important enough to keep penne in there and hope to build some MO going into monday nights, now even more, important show down with the colts?

Poll

Can't say i'm too happy with this list... since things are just a little out of wack... they'll need more than 7 D-line for practice

reps, especially when fergie doesn't practice every down..

I really do think kershaw made the team, but i have no idea where to cut... which is a good problem.

the O-line is TERRIBLE once you get past the first 6 maybe 7... there will have to be some roster chumming here or the need for a lot of prayer, because this is the spot of the largest drop off between the front liners and the back ups... there is once guy who really is a practice squader gardner, one guy who is lucky to be on the team frye, a career back up in berger and a 27 year old project in murphy.... i'm not sure one of them is ready to be a starter if called upon.

I hate cutting maybe the best special teams player in walden - when ST has been the bane of the preseason... if fields is going to revert back to low line drives (like on the NO TD) then they'll need ever ST there is... I went with bryan over him since bryan just (the offseason) signed the new contract.

I still think martin or haynos could go to say cincy if they get the right offer...

i'd love to ax denney if they had someone else who could long snap.

just as a side note: if smith settles in at the CB position - i wouldn't be shocked to see him in some goal line sets.

The Phinsider P Manning says young QB's need to play

http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:1gqyUBF7cssJ:espn.go.com/blog/afceast+%22+32+years+later,+Jets+start+another+rookie+QB%22&cd=5&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

On Tuesday, Manning spoke about the tough choice a team must make when choosing whether to send a rookie straight onto the field or let him spend time as an understudy before taking over as a more polished prospect, as his little brother did with the New York Giants.

"I can just speak for what I prefer," Manning said, "and Eli can give a different perspective. He sat for 10 games and started for the last six, and he said what he learned in the six that he played far outweighed what he learned in the 10 on the sideline. He said you just can't quite tell just how fast these defensive players are and just how confusing the blitzes are.

"That sort of reinforced what I thought: The best way to learn is to play. I remember how uncomfortable it was my third preseason game against the Chargers. I don't recall the stats, but I remember they weren't very pretty. I threw two to the Chargers.

"I think if you don't play, you're going to have that uncomfortable game, whenever it is you do. I think the sooner you do it, the better off you're going to be in the long run.

this was from ESPN's afc east blog http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:1gqyUBF7cssJ:espn.go.com/blog/afceast+%22+32+years+later,+Jets+start+another+rookie+QB%22&cd=5&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

all of this kind of goes along with what troy Aikman was saying during the broadcast last night... to paraphrase... young QB's are going to take their lumps no matter when they first get into the game and no amount of sitting is going to get them ready for that.

Notes…

Once again I cheated by putting Roth on the PUP list to start the season… if he ends his contract hold out ever recovers from his mysterious groin injury then Rod Wright will likely be looking for a new home.

The trade of Allerman, and EK did little to change my projections as I had both off my roster in my last projections…

http://www.thephinsider.com/2009/8/11/986054/my-crack-at-the-game-1-roster

With that in mind – I have David Martin on the same short list of Vets who likely will have a new home once September starts… My reasoning is that the team can not cut Haynos being the only above average run blocker(a point of emphasis for the team) at the position, and if the team feels that someone else will pick up Nalbone then they’ll move the most expendable TE who is at the end of their contract. Martin more likely to be moved than fassano.

Although Polite was a first down machine last year, the team is emphasizing run blocking this year (did I mention that already) and that isn’t his best attribute, so don’t be surprised if Kowaleski beats out polite for the position. (Remember kowaleski is a DC Coach P recruit at the cuse and TE Coach Deleon was his OC – so long term ties to the coaching staff seem to help or in this case equalize polite’s ties to the staff)

Although Joey Thomas is #5 on my last on list, I think he is a lock or close to it to make the team.

If Brandon Frye whiffs in game 3 and/or 4 a few more times that result in direct hits on mr Henne then add Nate Garner to the roster and bid adieux to mr frye.  Guys on the cut line getting the future of the franchise hammered don’t last on rosters long.

Finally – I think the last roster spot is going to come down to Courtney Bryan/Lex Hilliard/Rod Wright as all others on my list are direct position battles (kowalewski vs polite) that will not change the final count numbers. So I wouldn’t be shocked if ST ace Bryan beats out Rod Wrights D-line depth since there is so much versatility between the D-line and the OLB and the DEs.

Notes on the roster….

Depth on the defensive side of the ball is much better than on the offensive… the D-line is deep with a good mix of vets and youth, so don’t expect much change after roster cuts,  where as LB is pretty deep right now, yet there is a lack of youth, in particular up the middle,so I wouldn’t be shocked by some cut down chumming here… say Charlie Anderson or Lionel Dotson getting axed/moved for someone giving up on an early round pick…

The secondary is pretty deep right now and is scary young. I won’t be surprise by some big numbers being put against them early(say Indy & SD), but hopefully they will have short memories and by the end of the year will be a solid bunch… it’s going to be ugly back there for a little while folks.

Finally – there really isn’t any O-line depth… after the first team you have a couple of malingerers (berger, Frye) paired with some what really are practice squanders (garner, gardner)…. Expect some cut down chumming here, especially if they think they can sneak gardner onto the practice squad….

After that the rest of the Offense is pretty much set, other then STers kowalewski vs vets Polite and youth Nalbone vs vets martin …. Hilliard might sneak onto the roster at FB??? And Nalbone if they can’t deal martin and are afraid of some thievery could make the roster… but I don’t see it at this time.

The Phinsider my crack at the game 1 roster.

ok - it really isn't very smart to cut guess the final cuts before they make their first hits but most people round here wouldn't say i'm very smart...

i do want to say i'm cheating a little by putting Roth on the PUP ... but i just get the feeling that he is sitting out for contract reasons.... which these guys won't give in to, or he is seriously hurt and they'll put him on the sideline for the first 6 games to get in game shape... with JT playing well...

the other issue i have right now, is with out seeing the new wedge rules in effect, i'm unsure how a sick body killer like e walden plays out on with the new rules... if the wedge really is gone and a guy like allen/london is really a better STer then walden doesn't make the team and they'll carry 10 o-liners....

and finally you know the staff wants to get rid of a long snapper who doesn't do anything else... just a dead roster spot...but i havne't heard of anyone other then JT doing any long snapping... am i missing something. so JD makes the team until i hear of someone else... btw: if it shows up the guys in blue i see as PSers.... (ps i was too lazy to look up which garner/gardner is going to make the team and which one is going to make the PS ... so if i cut the wrong one let me know and i'll change it in the next version.

The Phinsider dolphins sign conner barth

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/football/story/1179599.html

the point not covered in this story was carpenter's crappy kick offs last year and his inability or the teams unwillingness to trust him from more than 50 yards.... so why do i bring this up .... well duh.... cause i have to write 75 words just to point out the the phins signed a kicker cause there isn't anyone else to sign and they have 4 open roster spots... so don't be surprised if they sign a punter to challenge the shanker in the next couple of days.

The Phinsider mondo has some fighting words for finsxfactor

http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2009/08/of-the-reams-of-emails-i-get-about-the-dolphins-the-three-subjects-most-often-covered-in-those-cybernotes-are-on-the-dolphins.html

before we get to mondo dissing finsxfactor's main crush aka the original maimi ducker, mr check down, ms butterfinger, and current cammeo love crush, john beck...

mondo points out a couple overlooked facts... that although the coaching staff mentioned that henne needs to get work this year in order to be ready to take over in 2011... he is only getting 5% of the first team snaps.

a(lthough it's not in this article but others also is pointing out that the lame ducker isn't very sharp right now and a theme from last year continues ... struggles in the red zone.. )

Mando also points out that henne is unlikely to pass the lame ducker (well isn't that a surpise when the deck is stacked against) because although henne is more gifted the lame ducker has more experience and uses it to his advantage......

but this is the part where the fighting words begin....

Secondly, there has been much criticism of White this offseason and again early in camp because he obviously does not have the strongest arm or most impressive build in the world. The Dolphins talk of changing the bodies of players. They need to change White's body because he resembles my 12-year-old nephew, all scrawny and wiry and looking like a 220-pound safety could tackle him into next week if given the chance.

Having said all that, White, I believe he is already better than John Beck.

Let me repeat that. White is already better than John Beck.

He has better control of the huddle. He is more mobile than Beck. And, seemingly, more courageous than Beck in that he attacks the defense rather than letting the defense attack him. White is more apt to throw down the field than Beck, who became frustratingly timid with checkdown passes.

Yes, Beck has a better arm and probably always will. But what good is a strong arm if you only use it for 5-yard dump passes? Yes, Beck is built bigger and stronger than White. But what good is a bigger body, if Beck rarely put that body in motion by leaving the pocket.?

I would say there is a 60-40 chance White earns playing time in some Pat Package this year. And I'd say he will be more effective in that package than Beck ever was in his rookie year. That package will include passes but also be a lot about running the football, and if you don't believe that check out the video

yup that is some serious Beck dissage and i'm not sure anyone other than Cam, finsxfactor, or a 40 year old byu cougar playing for bmore would challenge.

The Phinsider calling out matty

The ESPN football podcast is taking applications for each teams 'SUPERFAN' to occasionally appear on the show and comment on current issues and make assinine informed predictions/statements about their team.... last year the dolphin fan had 2 appearances and was mostly worthless his first time but did a good job the second time....

All that said we need our own matty to represent this mob of idiots  on-line community in a national quasi media format.

So Matty take the banner and send in your application.... I think the info is on pod vader's (the show's producer) facebook page.

The Phinsider Jags release cleo lemon

I know there were some fins fans around these parts a couple of years ago, who strongly believed that Cleo Lemon was the QB of the future. Well, per PFT the Jags released him today.... I'd like to wish him well on his future endeavors, and I hope he catches on someplace soon.

I know the Jets need a starter and the bills and patsies need a number 2, and seeing Cleo play for the Jets would make me feel good that a guy that good is playing for a team that deserves him.

The Phinsider stats as why Pat White will likely be a great starting QB in the NFL

Don't know if anyone else has been reading the "london calling" draft series over at the sun. you can get the post draft here. if you have time to read the whole series, its pretty dang interesting and while not entirely accurate as a predictor of miami's drafting, he does often come up with some statistical gems.

http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports/columnists/hyde/blog/2009/04/london_calling_biggest_longest_1.html

but in doing some research on Pat White Simon came up with some pretty dang interesting stats on why pat white is likely to end up as a very good starting QB in the NFL....

But what if White shows up at training camp believing, as he has every right to do, that he’s in a battle for the starting QB job? After all, this is a guy who’s started 49 games and completed 65% of his passes. Remember way back in Draft Winds 3 when I looked at the statistics on all QB’s selected in the first two rounds in terms of rates of success. They provided a fascinating insight; when you take the number of starts of a quarterback picked in rounds 1 and 2 and their career completion percentage in college and look at those that became successful starters in the NFL, they had at least 35 college starts and at least a 57% completion rating. Any who lacked in one or both departments had varying degrees of success:

QB’s with below 35 starts

1. Kyle Boller - 31 starts 48%
2. Ryan Leaf - 24 starts 53%
3. Joey Harrington - 26 starts 55%
4. Mike Vick - 21 starts 56%
5. JP Losman - 29 starts 57%
6. Akili Smith - 11 starts 58%
7. Tim Couch - 27 starts 67%
8. Alex Smith - 22 starts 66%
9. David Carr - 26 starts 62%
10. Drew Brees - 26 starts 61%
11. Rex Grossman - 32 starts 61%
12. Vince Young - 32 starts 61%
13. Aaron Rodgers - 25 starts 64%

You could argue that only Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers have been successful from that group and it’s probably too early to judge Rodgers successfully. On the other hand, check these numbers out:

QB’s with 57% completion percentage and 35+ starts

1. Jay Cutler- 43 starts 57%
2. Carson Palmer- 45 starts 59%
3. Brady Quinn- 46 starts 58%
4. Ben Roethlisberger 38 starts 65%
5. Byron Leftwich 36 starts 65%
6. Matt Leinart 39 starts 65%
7. Philip Rivers 49 starts 64%
8. Daunte Culpepper 43 starts 64%
9. Donovan McNabb 45 starts 63%
10. Peyton Manning 45 starts 63%
11. Eli Manning 37 starts 61%
12. Chad Pennington 35 starts 63%

Those are two pretty telling lists. And White’s numbers stand up against anyone’s. The same completion percentage as two time Superbowl winner Ben Roethlisberger. A better completion percentage than our own deadly accurate Chad Pennington and he had Randy Moss to throw to. Better than McNabb, Manning, Cutler and Philip Rivers. So like I say, why wouldn’t White feel he has a legitimate shot as a starting QB, regardless of the system he played in? He’s not been in a pro style offense for the Mountaineers and that bears out on film; as a pocket passer you’d like to see him move his feet more consistently and he has a tendency to stare down the receiver and rarely look off the safety, but clearly Sparano and David Lee and Dan Henning have a plan for White. Yet I simply refuse to see a way that that plan means giving White a fair shot at beating out Chad’s Pennington and Henne. So what does his drafting truly mean? Well, the Dolphins front office made the comment that they wouldn't be drafting anyone specifically for the Wildcat offense this year, but around draft time, teams lie. Don’t take it personally. They just do. I think that what this pick means for Miami is that they’re simply moving to the next phase of the Wildcat. I had a pretty good conversation with a coach about this after the selection and he told me a number of things about the way the offense will move forward. We both believe that the Dolphins will continue to run a base offense led by one of the Chad's, and in most games that base will be most of what you will see, but the Wildcat, which appeared in most games for a series or two, is clearly going to expand in the future. Pat White will be a very big part of that process. White ran a lot of Wildcat and spread attack plays from under center at West Virginia. As coach said to me, “The key to White's college success is based on great angles, great decisions, and an unbelievable tempo once the ball is snapped.” Scouts and experts refer to Percy Harvin as “a big play waiting to happen”, but you could say the same for White except that in our offense, he has the ability to pass the ball with better accuracy than some Pro Bowlers, however slightly skewed his college statistics may be.

Let’s not forget that even if he has the hands of Iheanyi Uwaezuoke, he is the NCAA career leader in rushing yards for a QB with more than 4,000. Teams will no longer key Ronnie Brown in the Wildcat. The top dog in this next phase of the scheme will be Pat White. Ronnie Brown will be the 2nd or third option, much like Ricky Williams was last year while White becomes the leader of the Wildcat most the time. White may line up at times as a WR in the new system, but unlike Pennington he'll now be a threat on the pass, end around, or reverse. And where we flexed Penny out with Ronnie under center, he was never a threat to catch the ball.

White is. And the scheme is about to make life for the defense a major problem

The Phinsider Pat White to Win the starting QB job within 2 years

per mike mayock at the NFL network....

ok i spent more time watching the NFL network coverage then espn (btw: is it me or are they seriously drifting away from actual content and analysis to a show of  personality shots and scripted banter highlighting  their talking heads???)

but if someone can find the following the clip, PLEASE LINK it here, because it says a lot in my book. On sunday while wrapping up the draft in say the 7th round, mike mayock was saying the white pick was one of the best picks of the draft and that white would beat out the two "hanging chads" (yuck, yuck, yuck) within 2 or maybe 3 years since white was the best pure passer in this years draft.

Mayock, in my book, has proven to be a pretty straight shooter, and not prone to hyperbole as some of the talking heads have been know to do. he was all over ryan last year, and said teams(aka the dolphins) passing on him were making a huge mistake. So we should all take note here, and maybe we are all limiting our expectations on white when we see him as only the wildcat QB, and that we need to look at him more as a QB prospect who could be the franchise QB that most of us are looking for.

The Phinsider what positions will the fins draft

Since it's even money that you and me have the idea as to who BP is going to draft #1 tomorrow as Mr. Ross, i don't see the point in guessing who they will draft, but i'm kind of curious as to what positions people thing they will draft and how many...

well they have Nine picks going into the draft here is my guess.

QB - they have Henne, Beck, & Pennington .... It's been no secret that they've tried to trade the duck since last camp. he's just not one of their guys... that said after Henne their isn't very much long term future there and they will need a developmental project but unless there is a trade i don't see a roster spot for a QB... chance of a QB being picked 20% (uless the duck is traded 50/50, or as i would argue the lame duck is traded (%5) then they will draft a QB)

my quess on qb's drafted - 0 -

RB - they have 4 if practice squad Lex is counted - R&R are in their last years and ronnie is one EBay the last time i checked. They draft a back or TWO every draft and i see this draft the sameway... if ronnies traded they will draft a second back this year. (chance of 1 being taken 80%)

my guess -1-

o-line - they have 4 starters inked for the next 3-5 years and one young player(thomas) who they hope will be the fifth.... that said they are very T H I N here and even thinner when you look at T reserves.... so if they drafted a guard and a tackle  i wouldn't be surprised... but they are looking stricktly for reserves and developmental projects, so these picks will be in 5-7 range. (chance of 1 being taken 65%, chance of 2 30%)

my guess -1-

TE - just like the backs, the starters are signed for only this year and neither is a great run blocker, a skill this admin puts a premium on (just ask sampson)...so i think this is a key position for them, and i expect an early pick to be used here (maybe even a first) chance of 1 being taken 90%

my guess 1

WR - good core group on the team with a wide skill set... think they will blossom once henne takes over and the offense is able to take advantage of ginn's speed to open space. that said there aren't any guys who've shown to be good blockers and there is a serious lack of size in the group. chance of 1 being taken 100% chance of a 2nd being taken 20%....

my guess is 1 and it'll be much later then expected say pick 3-5.

D-line - youth was served last year, between the signing of starks and the draft 4 young guys were added, and these guys still believe that soliai could become something (see last year .... he was suspended 2 times .... they didnt cut him, which means they are trying to teach him) that said - the d-line was less than stellar at getting to the QB and these guys believe strongly in QB pressure... so if there is a pass rusher out there that'll get some pressure out of 3-4 end postion ... you can put him on the board... chance of 1 being taken 60%

my guess is 0

LB - holes, holes, holes and very few players locked up for the long term....I would argue that this is the teams most pressing need. if you look at the roster, does the team have any players who you can say are more than likely in the plans for 2011? CC - they signed to a 3 year deal only after he conceded big chunks of cash to stay in S Fla... Roth contract is up and i'd agrue is the teams best LB right now... porter is getting old and will likely become more of a pass rush specialist as the year moves on.  AA is old and hardly what anyone would call a play maker as he does his job but doesn't wow anyone... Chance of 1 being drafted 100%, chance of 2 50%, chance of 3 %33

my guess is 2

secondary - the second biggest weakness on the team... unlike LB they do have some play makers back there, and maybe some youth, but there is very little depth and there are some really bad players on the roster (yes i do mean FA Green). so i see this as the position that will get the most focus of the triad. chance of drafting 1 - 100% chance of 2 85%, chance of 3 40%.

my guess is 2

special teamer

fb/k/p/slasher - special teams last year to be kind, were a work in progress. the good news is they did get better, the bad news is well ... they need to get better.my guess is they'll bring in a couple unrestricted FA to kick against the boys, but they'll draft a player to return kicks/punts. the other option is someone to run the wildcat... the great weakness of ronnie back there is that defenses or at least the good ones didn't respect ronnie's ability to throw... so i wouldn't be surprise to see a pat white type drafted or a kick returner or a FB to block/ bust wedges... chance of 1 drafted 45%

my guess is 1

so here is my guess for the draft

1 -RB, 1 o-line, 1-te, wr-1, lb-2, cb/s -2, & 1 special teamer...

and if they don't add the special teamer then go with 2 rb.

The Phinsider Denver says they will trade Cutler

per PFT -

Denver Broncos owner pat bowlen has said - since they can not speak to jay cutler, (they've tried for the last 10 days), that they will wimp out (err bend over) agree to Jay Cutler's demand to be traded.

They are listening to offers as we type....

so I know this is covered ground, but now that it's official and Cutler is going to be traded (likely before the draft), how do you feel about this? should miami enter the bidding?

The Phinsider Henne on the road with the Triad

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/football/miami-dolphins/story/972613.html

I guess in a sign that penne's days as the starting QB are numbered, the big three has taken Henne on the road with them to work out receiver prospects.

took my chevy to the levy and the levy was dry, Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die." bye bye american noodle arm.

The Phinsider other players on the trade block

http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2009/03/with-samson-satele-gone-who-might-be-next.html

OK - I know mando's opinions usually aren't popular around these parts but his team info is usually pretty accurate - especially when he's quoting team sources and reasons....

But Mando says the following players are on the trade block if the price is right.

Wilford: (bueller, beuller)

Beck: (anyone)

and Jason Allen (????)

any surprises?

wow - i know these guys feel that you should build a team from the inside out, but does that mean you should play without and OUT?

The Phinsider J Cutler has asked for a trade - Should the phins make a play for him?

Media reports are now saying that J Cutler has asked to be traded.

This is a real simple poll Question,  do you think it would be wise for the dolphins

to try and aquire cutler?

If you think the price will be too high - likely a first rounder and something else, but otherwise would like to have Cutler as the teams QB - just vote and leave your comment below.

my opinion? when there is talent like him on the market and QB has been a team need for at least a decade you have to inquire... however i'm pretty leary of Cutler because he just seems to be a bit of a head case.

The Phinsider should the Fins make a play for warner

As the days of FA wind down, Arizona is still playing hard to get with their Super Bowl QB... (would anyone expect less from Arizona and the Bidwells)...

Since this Admin is stuck on the idea that they need a caretaker QB to lead the team until some day in the future when they'll feel the need to right the leading cause of mediocrity for the franchise the last 10 years.... (no long term solution at the most important position on the field....

Is it time to make a play for the 3x superbowl QB....

the move has the following positive...

the team gets to trade Pennington (most likely for something in the late 2nd to 3rd round pick)

the team gets a QB who just lead a team to the superbow and has been to 2 others....(when was the last time the phins had a superbowl QB)

the team gets a strong armed QB who can get the ball deep - something that T Ginn hasn't had the last 2 years. and with the strong arm it has the additional positives... Warner is a good play action QB as teams have to respect his deep threat arm and T Ginns spead which means the safties have to play deeper... which opens up the inside running lanes for R Brown... so warner opens up a deep passing game AND improves the running game.

Warner has shown himself to be a great mentor to young QB's, unlike penne who reports indicated turned the team against K Clemmens, not only says PC things but actually LIVES and ACTs by those words.

now the only negatives i see... signing warner will cost a heck of a lot more and likely will eat up any remaing cap space and maybe some more...

Warner has a history of getting hurt and playing poorly (but then so does penne)

The Phinsider wow!!!! wish we could play Cincy 2x a year

for those of you who remember his 2 game stint as a starter here... (i'm still in meetings trying to recover)

but Cincy resigned C Crocker for 10 mi over 4 years.....

all of this begs the question are they really that bad or do they not watch the games?

http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/real_scouts/entry/view/17588/chris_crocker_stays_in_cincy

Does anyone else think we should sign warner to be our caretaker QB of the year? what would a new season be without a new caretaker?

The Phinsider dark horse LB?

no reason to really say this other than the guy was a stud 2 years ago and then

didn't do as much last season.... but a suspect he could be had cheap...

anyone know if the phins will make a play for Mike Boley

the guy is a little undersized for a parcels LB at 6-3 225

but he's only 26 and a pretty good turnover machine...

I hate this 75 word minimum and when the dolphins finally get a young franchise qb and get rid of all the caretaker QB's that the new coaches keep running out there i have no idea what i'll type as filler.
