Speaking of Drafts
So I was reading through YahooSports this morning and came across an article about what teams should be thankful for. Under the Steelers, Robinson said that the they should be thankful for Kevin Colbert's drafting. I don't know if any of you know/ remember who Kevin Colbert is (although, being on this site, I'll assume that most of you do). For those who don't or who want a refresher, Kevin Colbert was a scout for the Lions and was fired by Matt Millen when Millen got to the Lions. Anyways, what was interesting was this article listing the Steeler's first round picks for the last 8 years (this was written before Ziggy Hood was drafted). Interesting read, if just a little depressing because the Steelers have hit on EVERY ONE of their first round picks over that period and many of their second round picks. All done by a former Lion scout fired by Millen. That's awesome sauce. While this may be common knowledge to some, I had never realized the extent of his success with the Steelers. And so, I sobbed like a little girl for 5 minutes about Millen's incompetence firing obvious competence and decided that I will simply drown my sorrows this afternoon, again, in turkey and beer (really good beer - which by the way, should be a thread here too, as in what beer do you choose to drown your sorrows in because I use ...) and hopefully a Lion's win.
So, having said that, on this wonderfulest of all days, I am thankful to the Fords for finally removing their heads from their posteriors and getting rid of Millen. Amen.
Just a quick
thought on the playoffs this year... but it seems like all this time while the Piston and the Celtics were beating the crap out of the East the last few years, we assumed we were teaching Lebron and the Cavs how to win as was shown by their dominance in the regular season. Turns out it was Dwight Howard and the Magic who were taking the best notes and who are the star pupils now.
Last Thoughts on this Matter
So I figure this time, I will vent my feelings sober rather than post bar at 2.45 in the morning my time. Sorry to all about my last post. Not one of my prouder moments, but it's done. And I apologize to all here who actually read it and anything else that I may have said to offend anyone.
That being said, I'm still not buying into it. I am 31 years old and have been a Lions fan for my entire life, rooting for a team that has looked for the one quick fix to all of the problems it's had. The mindset for the franshise for as far back as I can remember has been that the QB is the cureall and once we have that magical cureall we can then build a team around him. So we keep taking them. And putting off building the rest of the team in the process. It's like clockwork. Why am I so surprised and upset by the fact that they did it again?
I guess my question in the end is what would it take you to stand up and say "I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take this anymore."?
Because I think I've just reached my point. Yes there is more to the draft today. But I'm not sure that I care anymore. They passed on the best player in the draft at a position we need more than any other. That was the point at which I stood up and said it.
Mayhem
you suck. i thought millen left. but at least your wallet will get fat. Congrats. Here's to 0-16 again. Don;t know how to finish this post because I'm so happy that our defense will continue to be neglected. Awesome. Welll hopefully Stafford will play this year otherwise we just spent $41 mill guaranteed on a 2nd rate QB. I'm just so glad that we have a QB that can't hit the broad side of a barn. SOOOIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Two Questions/ Thoughts
1. I love the thought of drafting Curry 1 overall. I don't see a problem with the fact that he 's an LB. If he is the best player, he should be taken, especially considering the fact that our D couldn't tackle last year. From everything I've read, and from what I've seen, he looks like the real deal, a tackling machine who will create havoc in the same vein as Patrick Willis or Ray Lewis. That being said, could it be that those of us who are rooting for the Lions to pick Curry just be convincing ourselves that he's the right one because of the abject failure of the last bunch of drafts? Are we overlooking superstar potential for a sure thing?
2. For those who want and OT first, whether it's Monroe or Smith, why does it need to be a tackle to sure up the line? As far as I can tell, we need a Gs more than Ts. Granted I'm not the biggest Backus fan, but he is more serviceable for the next year or so. Why can't we cure our line woes with the best interior lineman available at 20? Why move Backus out of position so that we can play a rookie when we could just grab the best interior lineman available - say someone like Alex Mack, Max Unger or maybe Duke Robinson (meh) at 20?
My thought is that these two are the closest to can't miss prospects in this draft. At this point, it' what we need (not missing I mean). They may be the "safe" picks, but in our current situation, this doesn't seem like a bad thing.
Just my $.02. Any thoughts?
