The Shotgun/Throwdown: Friday (6/1/12) Edition
Welcome, By-Godders, to the Shotgun/Throwdown, WVU's nationally recognized best place for sports links, information, sophomoric humor and daily distractions. We're being brought to you today by Nebraska Brewing's Brunette Nut Brown Ale (you can insert your own sophomoric joke here).
Today we get a heavy dose of baseball program updates. We have several updates on the proposed stadium and the ongoing coaching search, which, it seems, won't be completed today as previously hoped. Plenty of ongoing outlooks for football and a couple of opponent previews/school intros, and a couple hoops notes too, to go through as well. The Big 12 meetings are rolling along, with public denials of being interested in expansion (for what that's worth). We have other news from around the league and updates on KJ and Bruce as well. Have a great weekend everyone!!
The back of the 2012 official WVU Fan Tee features the inaugural WVU/Big 12 logo. The Official WVU Fan Tee is the only apparel you will see with this logo. "Like" this picture (ON FACEBOOK LINKED HERE) and you will be automatically entered for a chance to win a FREE 2012 official WVU Fan Tee!

UPDATE: The shirt is now available at your local Nike retailers (assuming WVU Bookstores, Book Exchange, Zides, etc) or online ordering HERE.

The Shotgun/Throwdown: Tuesday (5/29/12) Edition
Welcome, By-Godders, to the Shotgun/Throwdown, WVU's nationally recognized best place for sports links, information, sophomoric humor and daily distractions. We're being brought to you today by Jelen Pivo, in honor of today's Miss Throwdown.
I certainly hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend. Today we have more notes on conference realignment/Big 12 expansion (ain't it nice to not HAVE to worry about this?), kind words from our new conference-mates for Luck, the WVU Sports Hall of Fame announced its 2012 inductees, recruiting bits and more. There's also a bit on the scheduling and future of the Capital Classic. I'll give you half a guess as to who's whining about the new scheduling the most.
The Shotgun/Throwdown: Friday (5/25/12) Edition
Welcome, By-Godders, to the Shotgun/Throwdown, WVU's nationally recognized best place for sports links, information, sophomoric humor and daily distractions. We're being brought to you today by Adirondack's Dirty Blonde Ale, because deep down...who doesn't like a dirty blonde?
Today we have more reflections on Coach Stew's passing, including reports from the public service in Morgantown yesterday. We also have several reports from some of the latest Coaches Caravan stops with some interviews. A couple of updates on the baseball program are here. There's also a good bit of coverage and reaction from WVU fans and officials regarding the whole re-alignment thing that's still ongoing...and WVU is safely on the right side of right now. Lot's of news regarding former WVU players as well. All of this and more...
Have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend everyone!!
It's good to be the Mountaineer!!!

Q&A Podcast With Roll 'Bama Roll
With the announcement of the 2014 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic game between Alabama and West Virginia to be played in Atlanta, the fine folks over at Roll 'Bama Roll were kind enough to include me on their podcast this past weekend for a Q&A session. With the timing of the podcast, we were also fortunate enough to discuss the new Big 12/SEC Champions Bowl (or whatever it will be called). Nick Saban was a big point of discussion, his ties to West Virginia and WVU, whether he is The Bear 2.0, why he's the reason I'm a blogger right now and more. We also managed to fit in a few questions regarding the whole conference realignment saga, scheduling, recruiting and Missouri. There's even a fashion segment centering around 5th Year Senior's blue and gold houndstooth pants. We have approximately an hour's worth of listening for you, either by direct MP3 DOWNLOAD or the widget below. Thanks again to Roll 'Bama Roll for taking the time to talk to us and setting up the podcast!!
WVU Baseball Coach Greg Van Zant Not Retained
In a move that really shouldn't surprise anyone, AD Oliver Luck has made the decision to replace baseball coach Greg Van Zant. With the impending move to the Big 12 where baseball may be regarded ahead of even basketball, and it's a sport that has struggled at WVU, improvements to the program were blatantly necessary. The first move to improve the situation has just been made. A national search is now underway. Now, about those facilities...
If you haven't noticed, the top level of college football is now narrowed to the Big Four – Pac-12, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC. Those 48 schools control most of the influence, power, money and, most importantly, product in the Football Bowl Subdivision."
Big 12 And SEC Announce Major Bowl Partnership
The Big Ten and Pac-12 aren't the only major football conferences with official buddies now. The SEC and Big 12 have linked arms -- setting up a "new January bowl tradition," as Mike Slive calls it -- pairing their conference champions or runners-up beginning in 2014.
While SEC and Big 12 champs missing the playoffs would be a very, very rare event, the importance here is that the two have effectively created another Rose Bowl, and one that would quite often trump the Granddaddy, at least in terms of highly-ranked football teams. It also creates a very clearly defined upper tier in college football, with everyone from the ACC on down all but walled off from the highest level.
Follow the header link for more info on this awesome development.
The Shotgun/Throwdown: Friday (5/18/12) Edition
Welcome, By-Godders, to the Shotgun/Throwdown, WVU's nationally recognized best place for sports links, information, sophomoric humor and daily distractions. We're being brought to you today by Hofbräuhaus, where the food is great and the beer is better.

WVU vs. Alabama To Open 2014 Football Season
Just when we thought the offseason was going to be boring:
WVU v. Alabama to kick off 2014 season is "in the works." Requires some juggling on WVU's end to make it official.
— Mike Casazza (@mikecasazza) May 17, 2012
The juggling he's referring to is WVU likely dropping a home game, perhaps ECU or Maryland (not necessarily dropping, but deferring). While this would normally mean a monetary loss, if this does pan out as a Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta, the normal $2M home take would be offset by a $3.1M payout, if past numbers hold true. The other possibility being bandied about on Twitter is the possibility of Big 12 expansion and less league games, making the juggling a bit simpler. Time will tell.
This game has the possibility of being absolutely juicy. Holgorsen vs. Saban. Holgorsen's offense vs. Saban's defense, both with the summer to prepare. The possibilities are endless and almost too fun to think about. Ollie, let's get this done!!
UPDATE: Apparently, it's going to happen:
This WVU v. Alabama thing is basically done done. I'm told the juggling is finished and the one 2014 opponent has disappeared.
— Mike Casazza (@mikecasazza) May 17, 2012
ZOMG!!!
UPDATE 2: It's OFFICIAL NOW
Military Veterans: What's Your Favorite Sports Memory From Deployment?
Mountaineer Veterans, Matt Ufford is looking for your help/input (we'd love to see your stories too):
Memorial Day is looming, and SB Nation's YouTube channel wants to honor veterans with an original video. And if you served overseas, we want your help: we're seeking video of veterans talking about their favorite sports memories while deployed.
It can be anything: how you learned who won the World Series, watching the Super Bowl at 3 a.m., playing soccer with Iraqi kids -- whatever sports memory that has stuck with you through the years. Tell us how you felt, what the atmosphere was like, why it mattered to you.
No need for fancy production: webcams are fine, and you can upload it to twitvid or YouTube and tweet it at me, or email me the video file. Please include your name, your service, and the years you served.
Thanks, and we look forward to sharing your memories.

Smoking Musket Bracket Challenge Final Standings
So now that the evil one and his "one and done" minions have won the 2012 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament title, the annual Bracket Challenge has come to an end and we crown our champion bracketeer. Congratulations to "GetOffMyCourt" for the winning bracket, especially with having a team with first round exit as the bracket champion. (I've sent an email to the one listed on the contest, but if it isn't one you use, please email me directly at WVUIE97@gmail.com.)
Once again, amongst the staff, Caleb and his magic dartboard led the staff entries in 15th place. Full standings are LINKED HERE and the top 15 are listed after the jump. Thanks to everyone for playing!! Hopefully next year, it'll be a better year for the Mountaineers and be more worth following the progress through the tournament. I know I basically tuned out basketball once WVU was ousted from this year's tournament.
Texas Tech Recruiting Fail
A Texas Tech commit and a few other recruits went the wrong way trying to get to Lubbock last week for a visit to see the spring game.
