Wake Forest quarterback Ted Stachitas has won the starting job and his backup will be true freshman Tanner Price, according to a school spokesman. The Demon Deacons have one more scrimmage on Thursday, but it's unlikely any performances will change coach Jim Grobe's mind. Stachitas won the job this summer from Skylar Jones, who finished spring practices at the top of the depth chart while Stachitas was out with a hamstring injury.

Whether the Deacons were gashed, or merely nicked, will depend on the further evaluation of a knee injury suffered by Devon Brown. Brown, a junior wide receiver, led Wake Forest last season with 61 catches. Brown was helped off the field about halfway through the scrimmage with what was diagnosed by trainer Don Steelman as an injured medial-collateral ligament. "I told him that's one you don't even need," Grobe said in jest. "I don't know what the big deal is. That can be put back in there. So we'll see how that goes."

Price led all quarterbacks in both attempts and completions, connecting on eight of 13 throws for 82 yards. Stachitas completed five of eight attempts for a team-high 95 yards. Jones was four-for-seven for 27 yards and Brendan Cross was two-for-three for 16 yards. Devon Brown led the receivers with four catches for 69 yards. Redshirt senior Marshall Williams had a team-best 79 yards on three carries. Terence Davis, coming off a knee injury that kept him out of the 2009 season, had three catches for 29 yards. Jordan Williams had a 47-yard reception and finished the day with two catches for 52 yards.

"We have a great group of guys right now at quarterback," Grobe explained. "I think you get a little concerned if you don't have any talent back there but we have three or four guys that have enough talent to win. What we're looking for right now is a guy who makes very few mental mistakes and does not turn the football over. That's going to be the key. The flashiest guys, the fastest guy, the guy with the best arm may not end up being our quarterback. It's going to be the guy that doesn't get us beat. The guy that takes care of the ball the best and makes the fewest mental mistakes is probably going to be the guy."

"If it was Sky, we would probably be more run-based," Grobe said. "If it was Ted, we would be more of a 50-50 kind of balance on offense. If it ends up being Brendan, we're probably going to be more of a 60-40 type team, a little bit more of throw-run." Any or all could play, especially early, but Grobe shies away from duets like the Mauk-Cory Randolph platoon. "We really didn't improve much as a team when we had two quarterbacks before, so I haven't had a good experience with two quarterbacks," he said.

Early practices will determine a lot, but they are not fun for either players or coaches

Vikings agreed to terms with fifth-round OG Chris DeGeare on a four-year contract. DeGeare, a 335-pound mauler from Wake Forest, was a three-year starter for the Demon Deacons. A fit for Minnesota's mostly power-blocking scheme, he could push Anthony Herrera for the Vikings' starting right guard job in time.

Grobe said coaches were reluctant to use the former Cary High standout because he suffered several injuries during his sophomore season, requiring shoulder surgery and treatment for knee and ankle problems. "We probably treated him too nicely," Grobe said. "I hope that won't be an issue this fall. We're going to hand that guy the ball until his tongue is hanging out."

So why, then, do most people think college basketball is like the Wild Wild West, full of outlaws and renegades? Backstabbing. "Here's what I think happens a lot -- a team loses a kid to someone else and all of a sudden that someone else is cheating. Every time North Carolina loses a kid, someone else is cheating. It's like there's so much arrogance with them; they can't believe someone would rather go somewhere else, so the other team has to be cheating.''

Wake Forest has gained a commitment from athlete Sherman Ragland of Southern Durham (Durham, N.C.). Ragland (6-foot-1, 190-pounds) favored the Deacons over other offers from North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, Duke and East Carolina. He posted a 4.5 40-yard dash, 4.25 20-yard shuttle and 35-inch vertical at the Durham National Underclassmen Combine.

He visited Rogers last Tuesday in Apex, where Rogers, a former All-America, is attempting to battle back from a dirt-bike crash in 2008 that damaged his spinal cord and left him paralyzed from the neck down. The two are acquaintances from their days in the NBA, Rogers as a player for 12 years and Bzdelik as a scout and coach for 17. "It was one of the most enjoyable afternoons I've spent in a long, long time," Bzdelik said. "We reminisced and laughed over a lot of mutual experiences that we had in the NBA, the people that we know, the coaches and players. It was informative, rewarding and inspiring to me, with his spirit and knowledge.
