Rios vs Abril: Abril Speaks Out Against The Robbery
After an absolutely horrendous decision, Richard Abril has finally decided to speak out on the decision. He sat down with ESPN Deportes to discuss the results of the fight and his reaction. Here are a couple of excerpts from the interview.
*****
How did you feel when Brandon Rios was named the winner of your April 14 bout?
I was so focused for that fight, and I felt that the bout was mine because I was executing my game plan and I was frustrating him. When I saw the first judge's decision, I said, "Oh, all right" with the point differential he [gave me]. But then when the other voted against me, I was like, "Uh, this smells bad," and then I lost. They took a win away that was rightfully mine. I felt very bad with myself, but at the same time, I was very satisfied because of all that I did.
Several Biomarkers Studied In Order To Develop A Diagnostic Test For Minor Head Trauma
While everyone knows that getting punched in the head can lead to brain damage, there is no good diagnostic test to measure the amount of degeneration. Currently, the best method is an MRI of the brain to check for swelling along with cognitive tests. Researchers from Sweden are trying to remedy this situation by examining several biomarkers in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in Olympic boxers.
This study involved 30 Olympic boxers with at least 45 fights and 25 people in the control group. Each boxer was tested 1 to 6 days after the fight and then again after a rest period of 14 days. Unfortunately, it seems that the best way to get CSF is to perform a spinal tap, which can include some scary side effects. I'll quote this article for the researcher's conclusions.
The researchers conclude that increased CSF levels of T-tau, NFL, GFAP, and S-100B (these are the biomarkers) in more than 80% of the boxers demonstrates that both the acute and the cumulative effect of head trauma in Olympic boxing may induce CSF biomarker changes that suggest minor central nervous injuries. They also state that the lack of normalization of NFL and GFAP after the rest period in a subgroup of boxers may indicate ongoing degeneration, and the recurrent head trauma in boxing may be associated with increased risk of chronic traumatic brain injury.
Golden Boy Offers Erislandy Lara to Vanes Martirosyan, Big Red X Is Confused
Well it looks like Scott's big red x might be taking a bit of a vacation. According to Rick Reeno, it seems that Golden Boy has reached out to Top Rank to make a good junior middleweight battle between Erislandy Lara and Vanes Martirosyan. It seems that this fight will be a WBC title eliminator with the winner becoming the mandatory for WBC beltholder Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. In order to set this fight in motion, Lara reached out to his manager and Richard Schaefer and told them that he really wanted the fight against Vanes.
"[Lara and his team] made it clear to me that they want to do the fight and I picked up the phone and I called Todd," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com. It's an interesting fight and I know the networks are interested in that fight. That's why I discussed it with Todd and we made an offer."
WBA Sets Purse Bid For Potential Celestino Caballero and Mikey Garcia Bout On May 3rd
It seems that the WBA is trying to set up a featherweight clash between Celestino Caballero and Miguel "Mikey" Garcia. Mikey is the youngest brother our of the fighting Garcia clan which includes trainer of the year Robert Garcia and trainer of Victor Ortiz, Daniel Garcia. Garcia is a Top Rank fighter while Caballero is a Lou DiBella fighter, making this a possible matchup. However, Top Rank fighters Juan Manuel Lopez and Yuriorkis Gamboa avoided Caballero like the plague, so I'm not so sure that Top Rank will pull the trigger with Mikey Garcia.
First off let me say that I hope this bout actually happens. I see this fight as a really interesting style matchup. Caballero is a tall, powerful fighter that seems to have mental issues that were evident against Jason Litzau. Mikey Garcia is an extremely talented boxer whose heart might not be totally into boxing. So there is not only an interesting style matchup between a slick boxer and a rangy boxer, but also two fighters who seem to have mental issues inside the ring as well.
Mayweather vs Cotto: Floyd Mayweather Streams His Workout Tomorrow
It seems that Floyd is going to stream his workout tomorrow. I would normally say that we really shouldn't waste our time with this stream, but this year has proven that no stream is too dull for boxing fans. Whether it was the NYSAC meeting about the extent Antonio Margarito's injury, or the live sentencing of Floyd Mayweather, nothing is too dull for the passionate boxing fan.
In that spirit, Floyd will stream his workout according to his website and this official statement.
Floyd "Money" Mayweather invites boxing fans around the globe to tune intohis media workout tomorrow as he streams it LIVE on his website www.floydmayweather.com. Mayweather wants to give fans a preview of what's in store on May 5 when he takes on Miguel Cotto from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. which will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View®.
To watch Mayweather's live workout visit www.floydmayweather.comtomorrow at 6:45 p.m. ET/3:45 p.m. PT.
Tune in tomorrow to see Floyd and Roger do a coordinated pad routine. Floyd might skip rope to a song and look fast. He might also hit the speed bag while doing something else, like talking on the phone or mugging for the camera. Finally, Floyd might put on a bunch of weight on a head brace and do a neck workout. There also may be some general calisthenics and maybe a late night run or two.
I have no interest in seeing this mostly because I feel like I have seen the totality of Floyd's non-sparring workouts throughout the HBO 24/7 series. However, Scott might be interested in having a midweek live thread and honestly you guys are the only thing that can make this event interesting. So will you guys be interested in this sort of thing or will it be a pass?
Fox Sports Media Group And Golden Boy Reach An Agreement
It seems that Golden Boy Promotions and the Fox Sports Media Group have reached a long-term agreement regarding airing a number of live fights each year. It seems that most of these live fights would be either Solo Boxeo or Club Nokia events, but more boxing on TV is always a good thing. It seems that Fox will also start airing some classic fights from Oscar, Bernard, Morales, and Marco Antonio Berrera.
During the first year of the partnership, FOX Deportes is scheduled to air a total of 44 live events originating in both the United States and Mexico; for every year thereafter, the network airs 36 live events. In addition, FSMG [Fox Sports Media Group] networks gain access to classic fights from the Golden Boy fight library which features fights of past and current world champions such as Oscar de la Hoya, Bernard Hopkins, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera.
The real question here is what is going to happen with Top Rank. Top Rank Live has previously aired on Fox Deportes, does the new agreement with Golden Boy preclude Fox from airing these shows? I really hope not, but it seems like the next step in the cold war between Golden Boy and Top Rank. Golden Boy has lined up with a network and I would bet that Top Rank will align itself with another network like NBC or CBS.
If Top Rank does sign a similar deal with another network, then it essentially guarantees that a Top Rank prospect will never fight a Golden Boy prospect for at least the next couple of years. There will not only be promotional pressure but also pressure from the networks to keep giving younger prospects showcase fights, which is not a good thing for the fans. Do you guys think that this type of deal is good or bad for the fans?
Mayweather vs Cotto: HBO Special On Floyd Mayweather
A new special about Floyd Mayweather aired this past weekend. It was called "Floyd Mayweather: Speaking Out" and it featured biographer Michael Dyson. In my opinion most of the questions were softballs, but there were a couple of interesting response from Floyd and they were recorded by David King,
Mayweather also spoke about his impending incarceration, inferring his wealth and celebrity had a lot do with his legal problems.
"I'm pretty sure Martin Luther King has been to jail," Mayweather said. "I'm pretty sure Malcolm X has been to jail, and there's many more that's been in jail. You take the good with the good, and the bad with the bad. This is just another obstacle put in my way, but I can get through anything. Am I guilty? Absolutely not."
During the special, Mayweather went on to say that he took a plea deal because he didn't want to drag his kids through the legal process. I'm not sure how to say this but Floyd is not going to jail for trying to enact social change like Martin Luther King. The armchair psychologist in me says that Floyd is trying justify the fact that he is going to a place with hardened criminals by telling himself that really influential people also went to jail. Floyd is not one of them.
Mayweather vs Cotto: Floyd Mayweather Makes A Personal Magazine
Floyd Mayweather is teaming up with publisher MYMAG to make a personalized magazine. The magazine will feature some original content about Mayweather's personal life along with Mayweather's favorite magazine content.
Apparently the magazine will be a limited edition of 2,500 copies that will feature gold leaf lettering. Also the limited edition package comes with a deck of 52 playing cards and some poker chips, because Floyd has a gambling problem or lives in Vegas or something. Other celebrities that have a MYMAG include Diddy, Olivia Munn, Brett Ratner, Andrea Rosso, Steve Aoki, and Deepak Chopra. Basically it seems that you make one of these magazines if you have an extremely high opinion of yourself and a ton of money, which explains why Floyd is making one.
Pacquiao vs Bradley: Floyd Mayweather or Juan Manuel Marquez Next In Line For Manny Pacquiao
After Manny Pacquiao's controversial decision over Juan Manuel Marquez in November, there were some boxing fans that were calling for an immediate rematch to remedy the supposed injustice. Yet, after another round of negotiations with Floyd Mayweather failed, Manny Pacquiao's team decided to go after Tim Bradley and deny Juan Manuel Marquez a fourth fight. Now a report from Ronnie Nathanielsz suggests that Team Pacquiao may be pursuing another fight with his archrival. According to Manny Pacquiao's advisor Michael Koncz, the plan was always to have one final fight with Marquez.
"[After] discussing the financials with some Showtime and HBO executives and then talking to Manny about it we decided it was better to do Bradley now and then entertain doing Marquez in the fall. [If Floyd] is available and wants to fight we'll do Mayweather, if not we are certainly looking forward to having one final fight with Marquez."
Koncz conceded that out of their three fights "the last one was the most controversial. We are not going to make excuses but Manny wasn't a hundred percent in that fight."
New Study Suggests Boxers Should Retire At The First Signs Of Brain Damage
Preliminary results from a new brain study suggest that there might be a point of no return for some combatants. Essentially, there becomes a point where the brain can no longer repair itself and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) becomes inevitable. The symptoms of CTE include personality changes and general cognitive difficulties, much like Alzheimer's disease.
The actual study involves a combination of brain scans using MRI technology and various cognitive tests to measure the extent of damage to the brain. The scope of the study includes 109 fighters segmented into three groups based on the amount of time the fighter has been a professional. The specific cutoffs for each group are as follows: the first group has less than 6 years of experience, the second group has 6 to 12 years, and the final group has more than 12 years of experience.
"In those that fought less than six years, we didn't find any changes," Bernick said. For that group, he said, "the more you fought didn't seem to make any differences in the size of brain structure or their performance on some of the tests like reaction time."
But for the other two groups of boxers and combat athletes, "the greater number of fights, the sizes of certain volumes of the brain were decreasing," he said. "But, it was only in those that fought more than 12 years that we could detect the changes in performance in reaction time and processing speed."
Berto vs Ortiz II: Press Conference Highlights And Interviews
After a spectacular first fight, it seems that Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto are ready for round two. Of course this fight was supposed to happen earlier in the year, but Berto tore his bicep in a strange training accident leading to a long delay. The video up top contains the highlights from today's press conference and a couple of one-on-one interviews with each of the fighters. This is definitely a must see video just for the part where Oscar De La Hoya starts lauding Victor Ortiz. First Oscar starts by saying that Ortiz was from "Garden City, Kansas City." Then he says that Ortiz loves it when his back is against the wall, which is clearly false. I don't think that Ortiz liked it when Maidana started to hit Ortiz with flush shots or when Floyd was landing shots at will.
Abril vs Rios: Abril's Team Will Protest Loss To WBA
In a fight that appeared to be another stain on boxing, Richard Abril lost a controversial decision to Brandon Rios. It was suggested in an earlier column today that the Nevada State Athletic Commission saw nothing wrong with the decision. However, as expected, Abril's team, specifically matchmaker Ricardo Rizzo, seems to have a very legitimate issue with this fight according to Miguel Rivera.
"With these [decisions] in Las Vegas, boxing loses credibility. It seems that Top Rank fighters are protected. Even the pay-per-view commentators said that Abril took Brandon Rios to school. Abril was fighting him in the old [school] style and the judges in Las Vegas are the most stupid out there. We strongly protest the decision of these judges, who are incompetent," Rizzo said.
"Only Adalaide Byrd, an international judge of the WBA and WBO, issued the correct score. I want to appeal to the WBA to rectify this result. Promoters and global agencies must join together to force the Nevada State Athletic Commission accept the participation of international judges, just like the rest of the world," Rizzo said.
HBO Promo: The Fight Game With Jim Lampley
Starting May 12th, HBO will air a boxing show featuring World Championship Boxing play-by-play commentator Jim Lampley. It seems that this show will be some sort of mix of interviews, current news, and general commentary. Basically, this show is what I hate the most out of Lampley, when he tries to force his opinions on the audience. Instead of trying to come up with a coherent message about this 30-second video, let's just do a running commentary.
- Jim Lampley really does have a separate interview voice
- I am disappointed by the lack of tortoise shell glasses on Jim Lampley. The straight black hipster glasses do nothing for me
- I have no idea what ‘boxing is the most emotionally accessible sport' means. Nothing says ‘willing to bare my soul' like punching a guy in the face.
- The next couple of phrases do not make me want to watch the show because I think I already know the answers. Spoiler alert: Mayweather's best punch by far is the straight right. Sergio Martinez has gotten better later in his career because he started boxing at age 20. If Manny Pacquiao fights his normal fight, he will easily beat Timothy Bradley.
- Lampley is going to try and make this show as up-to-the-minute as possible. Not like anyone could get that news from the BLH or anything.
- Lampley: Life is in some ways a fight. Life is like a strained analogy; it takes time to get it and you croak when you do.
Groves vs Stieglitz: George Groves Pulls Out Of Fight
It seems that George Groves might be known as an injury-prone fighter. After dubiously dropping out of his previously scheduled fight with Kenny Anderson with a ‘back injury,' he is now pulling out of his WBO super middleweight May 5th fight against Robert Stieglitz. According to Martin Domin, Groves has put out a public statement apologizing to his fans.
"I am sorry to have to announce that I won't be boxing on May 5. I have picked up an injury in the build up to this fight. We tried to work through it but soon realised I wouldn't be able to perform the training needed to prepare for this fight. After coming back to London immediately and seeking medical advice I hope that this problem will be sorted soon and will only be a short delay.
I am truly sorry to everyone involved who will be affected by this. This is without doubt the toughest decision I have ever had to make, I am gutted but nothing worth having is given away. It has only made me more determined to achieve my goal of becoming world champion. Thanks to everyone again for their continued support in my journey."
The Conundrum Of Andre Ward's Next Fight
Andre Ward has put himself in an interesting position for his next fight. After winning the Super Six tournament, with a broken hand no less, Andre Ward became the top-rated super middleweight. His dominating performances over Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler combined with his less-than-thrilling style, make the list of potential exciting opponents quite small. To further complicate matters, most of the top super middleweights already have fights lined up, crossing them off the list for a June fight.
Obviously, Lucian Bute and Carl Froch are unavailable because they are fighting each other and Robert Stieglitz has a fight lined up with George Groves. A Mikkel Kessler rematch is out of the question as well because the Dane has a fight lined up with Allan Green.
Pacquiao vs Bradley: Bradley Wants The Fight To Go The Distance
With Manny Pacquiao coming off of his worst performance in years against Juan Manuel Marquez, this might be a great time to be Timothy Bradley. He arguably in the prime of his career and he is quick and physical fighter that might give Pacquiao some trouble. In an interview with Ryan Burton, Bradley admits that he wants to feel Pacquiao's power early in the fight.
"Hell yeah, I definitely do. I get in the ring with a lot of people who say they can punch. I get hit with a big shot flush in the chin and I'm like 'that's it'?" Stated Bradley. He also said that if he is able to take Pacquiao's power early that the pound for pound champion will be in for a long night. "If he can't rattle me its going to be one hell of a fight. If its nothing too crazy then it's one hell of a fight. I think I will make an adjustment."
I think Bradley's ability to make adjustments during the fight just might make the difference for Tim. Manny Pacquiao is going to have a very good gameplan coming into the fight, but what if plan A doesn't work all that well? Does Manny have the mental focus to find Bradley's weaknesses and can he exploit them?
Pacquiao vs Mayweather: Jim Lampley Is Pessimistic That The Fight Happens
It seems that we always complain about Jim Lampley when he interjects his feelings into his play-by-play calls. The best example of this phenomenon is when Lampley tried to interject some excitement into a boring Manny Pacquiao fight and just started spouting absolute nonsense. Yet, he is getting his own boxing show on HBO, which will only make me miss BLH radio. Before his show airs, Michael Woods had a chance to ask him a couple questions about the potential Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather megafight.
"Pure speculation, my guess is it doesn't happen," Lampley told me. "They keep delaying it. It keeps not being the thing they want to do. It's sad and painful..I can't imagine twenty years from now, people telling Floyd or Manny, "That was the smartest thing you did, not fighting Pacquiao, or Mayweather." He pauses. "Now, I don't want to sound completely pessimistic. Maybe a better way to see it is like the old grandmas used to say: Don't hope for the new bicycle, you won't get it."
Lampley demonstrates the thinking that frustrates me in this quote. I completely and totally agree with him on the first part of this quote. Then he goes and says this absolutely strange analogy to Grandma's and bicycles. What's the moral of that saying? Don't openly hope for nice things because your Grandma is spiteful and will go out of her way to make sure it doesn't happen? I have no idea what that quote is supposed to convey, but I do think that both fighters are going to regret it if they don't fight each other and historians are going to lambast both of them for their stubbornness.
Richard Schaefer Signs Contract Extension With Golden Boy
In a move that should surprise no one, it appears that Richard Schaefer has signed a long-term contract to stay with Golden Boy Promotions. Confirmation of this report comes from Dan Rafael at ESPN. Oscar De La Hoya is quite excited about this non-development.
"I am thrilled to have Richard commit to a long-term contract extension with Golden Boy, as he is not only my trusted chief executive officer, but he is one of my closest friends," Golden Boy president and retired former 10-time world champion Oscar De La Hoya said in making the announcement. "This is a very important day for the company and another, and very exciting, chapter in our storied path. We have achieved so much already and I can't wait to announce the many endeavors Richard and I have been working on over the past months to ensure our continued growth and success."
Schaefer also seems to be excited about the long-term contract.
"I am excited to extend my contract and look forward to working with the company for many years to come," Schaefer said. "Oscar is a visionary leader who has inspired millions as a fighter in the ring and now he is doing the same thing outside of the ring with his 'yes, we can' attitude. I am proud of him, our Golden Boy staff, our partners and shareholders and, most importantly, our fighters, who make the company what it is."
Senchenko vs Malignaggi: PPV Promo Video
In his quest to get a belt in the welterweight division, Paulie Malignaggi will be traveling to the Ukraine to tfight Vyacheslav Senchenko on Sunday, April 29th. It should be an interesting scrap where we find out if Paulie is really old or if Senchenko is the real deal. After talking to Scott a couple of times, I've become convinced that Paulie has lost a step, and that pretty much means that he is done. Paulie was never a defensive genius, and he never had any power. He simply relied on being faster than the other guy, which means that losing that speed could be devastating. Mostly since the video is only 30 seconds long, I will do a bullet-point quick analysis of the video.
Rios vs Abril: Press Conference Quotes And Video
Brandon Rios and Richard Abril are trying really hard to pretend to hate each other. The first chapter was when Abril stormed Rios's "I hate Gamboa" party, and started a physical altercation. It wasn't because Abril had won the WBA title that Rios vacated on the scale against John Murray, but they "genuinely" didn't like each other. The whole event was far too convenient for Top Rank. This awesome fight that we put together is not going to happen but, hey look over there, this could be an awesome fight between two people that hate each other. Sorry to be so negative tonight, but I wasn't buying into the fact that these two guys hated each other back then and I am certainly not buying into it now.
In order to drum up some excitement for the independent PPV this weekend, Rios and Abril are at it again. According to Jake Donovan, these two got into it during the press conference today. The video of the two "going at it" is posted after the story so you can judge for yourself. To me it's typical pre-fight hijinks used to drum up interest in the fight.
In the press conference quotes, Abril seems almost sorry that he got into a physical confrontation with Rios.
"Everybody was asking me about the Miami press conference when I pushed him," Abril (19-2-1, 8KO) explained in attempting to justify his unprofessional actions last month. "I only heard the "F" word coming from him. I have nothing against Brandon Rios. I went there to let Rios know who I am and who he needed to fight. On April 14, you're going to see a great fight."
Pacquiao vs Bradley: Michael Koncz Shares His Thoughts On Timothy Bradley
Before I even start this article, let me just say that I don't care what Michael Koncz thinks mostly because he is frequently wrong and misinformed. Yet, whenever someone close to either Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao speaks about an upcoming opponent, we must report it and we will all discuss it. Igor Frank of the Glendale Examiner recently spoke with Michael Koncz about Manny Pacquiao's next opponent, Timothy Bradley. Koncz first speaks to the criticism that Manny will overlook Timothy Bradley, much like Manny did with Juan Manuel Marquez.
"I don't think Manny is doing that," replied Konz:"He is not underestimating Bradley. Manny was young. Manny was hungry at one time as a young fighter. He knows that Bradley is undefeated. Bradley as a physical aspect; he's got a tremendous body. He has skill and we know he is going to be in the best shape of his life and he is going to come there to win this fight."
First of all, Manny is not going to show up in the best shape of his life, because he's not going to magically become 5 years younger in this fight. I would expect Manny to be in slightly better shape than the JMM fight, but he is not going to be too far off from that standard. The distractions that detracted from his last training camp are not going away either.
Rios vs Abril: Brandon Rios Joins PADRES Cancer Organization
While Brandon Rios may be vilified for his for his abhorrent impression of Freddie Roach's Parkinson's disease, Brandon is trying to do some good with young cancer patients. Since 2011, he has been involved with the PADRES organization. The main goal of this organization is to improve the quality of life for young Latino children with cancer and their families. Today, Brandon was named a PADRES ambassador of hope, according to Boxing Scene, and he was quite excited about that honor.
"I'm excited to join PADRES in the fight against childhood cancer. I was touched by the kids when I went out to visit them at the hospital earlier this year. I saw firstāhand the battle they are going through and how much PADRES has helped them and their families. I want to help PADRES raise funds to help the kids. I want everyone to know that even though as a boxer I step into the ring to battle for 12 rounds, that there are kids who are battling cancer 24/7 who need my support and I'm going to be there for them," said Rios.
I like to see these kinds of stories from boxers. We really don't have any idea what these boxers do in their free time, and it is nice to see that some of them give back to the community. I can't imagine having childhood cancer or having a kid with cancer. Not only the emotional toll of this tragic illness but the financial toll as well, which makes organizations like PADRES invaluable. Cheers to Brandon Rios for giving to a great cause.
Vicente Escobedo Thinks He Could Beat Adrien Broner
It seems that Vicente Escobedo is trying to get another big fight on HBO, this time against Adrian Broner. Some of you might remember Escobedo from the decent effort he put up against Robert Guerrero. He got put down a couple times, but gave Guerrero some issues in the later rounds. Escobedo gave World Boxing News some interesting thoughts about Adrien Broner.
"I would like a shot at Broner of course. I think I have the style and skills to beat him," Escobedo told World Boxing News. But I'll go for the first champion my manager and promoter can make a deal with and if that is Broner then I welcome it. He is a very talented fighter but I see chinks in his armor, although I wouldn't tell what they were...The main goal is of course the title shot and we are talking about it for after my next bout. That's what I am gearing up for," he added.
I'm not sure if I like Escobedo's chances at all in this fight. Broner has repeatedly shown us that he has great speed coupled with great power and a halfway decent defense. Of course, some of these performances have come against poor competition and Broner did not look fantastic against Daniel Ponce De Leon. In fact a number of people thought that Broner lost that fight. So if Escobedo could bring the fight to Broner and put him under severe pressure, then this could be a decent fight. Ok I talked myself into liking this fight, what do you guys think? Does Escobedo have a chance of knocking off Adrien "Pops brush my hair" Broner or will Adrien be "The Problem"?
Khan vs Peterson II: Freddie Roach Outlines His Gameplan For Amir Khan Against Lamont Peterson
Freddie Roach has had a tough couple of months with poor performances coming from Manny Pacquiao, Jorge Linares, and Amir Khan. Now he is broadcasting to BoxingScene his gameplan for Amir Khan ahead of his May 19th matchup with Lamont Peterson.
"The biggest thing is to keep the fight in the middle of the ring and not lay on the ropes. If he lays on the ropes, Peterson can bang on the body really hard and then he can come on top. Laying on the ropes, that might work in the amateurs, but it doesn't work in professional boxing," Roach told BoxingScene.com.
"We're going to be boxing a lot smarter in the center of the ring. And when he comes in with his head low - instead of pushing him off we'll catch him coming in with the uppercuts and hooks. I have a good strategy worked out for Amir and if we follow it I think we'll be good. I think Amir will be too much for him in this fight and I really look forward to this rematch."
Oscar De La Hoya Suggests Jorge Linares Finds New Trainer
After his stunning loss to Sergio Thompson last Saturday, Jorge Linares has some thinking to do. He has lost his last two fights by KO, and he has looked more like a flawed fighter than a guy who has superstar potential. It seems that his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, thinks that his overburdened trainer, Freddie Roach, should shoulder a good bit of blame for these losses. On his twitter stream Oscar had these comments following Jorge's loss.
"Linares needs a new trainer. He has so much natural ability but has no defense. [Jorge] needs a new trainer someone that is going to pay attention and teach him defense! [Freddie Roach was] just to busy and I was told he didn't train him for this one... if you do not get hit you can't get knocked out... if he had defense he would be untouchable. If I had no chin I would do everything in my power to learn the craft of defense."
Bute vs Froch: Fight Will Be Streamed By Epix In The US
There has been a strange set of circumstances surrounding who was going to air this fight in the US on May 26th from Nottingham, England. The natural pick would be Showtime, since Lucian Bute is still under contract with Showtime for one more fight.
Yet, Showtime has pushed rather hard for Bute to fight either Andre Ward, the winner of the Super Six tournament, or Andre Dirrell, for some odd reason. Since Bute ended up picking Carl Froch, Showtime decided to pass on this fight in the hopes that they could get a fight between Andre Ward and Lucian Bute. HBO did not want to pick up the fight because the head of HBO's boxing operation, Ken Hershman, is the mastermind behind the Super Six.
Pacquiao vs Bradley: Freddie Roach Admits Manny Was Distracted Against Juan Manuel Marquez
When Manny Pacquiao was last in the ring against Juan Manuel Marquez, something did not exactly look right. Manny was tentative and was not able to unleash his signature combinations. Now Freddie Roach has come up with a couple of reasons to excuse Manny's less than stellar performance in an interview with BoxingScene.
"I think Manny got caught up with a lot of distractions and I think those distractions hurt his training a little bit and it finally caught up with him," Roach would add. "The last fight, you've got to give Marquez credit, because he knows how to fight Manny. He's fought him three times and I think every time they fight, it's going to be a close fight. I think Manny's going to win by a little bit each time."
Dereck Chisora Appeals License Revocation
After getting his license revoked indefinitely by the British Board of Control, it was a natural next move for Dereck Chisora and promoter Frank Warren to appeal the decision. Two weeks after the initial decision, these two have in fact appealed the decision according to a report from the Associated Press. Frank Warren had some interesting thoughts on the matter.
"The grounds for the appeal are that we're not satisfied with the way the hearing went," Frank Warren, Chisora's promoter, told Britain's Press Association. "Dereck Chisora will present his side of events and then we'll see what happens. A lot of stuff came out at the first hearing," Warren said. "For example we thought (BBBC chairman) Charlie Giles was in charge but it turns out there was no steward from the BBBofC representing the British boxer's interests. Instead he was working for the WBC."
Frank Warren is trying to get Chisora's license reinstated so that he can get an eventual matchup between David Haye and Dereck Chisora. David Haye also has to go through some legal hoops in order for the fight to happen as well. As some of you might remember, David Haye let his British License lapse and would need to reapply for it if he wanted to fight in England.
Pacquiao vs Bradley: Manny Pacquiao Looking To Become A Governor
Manny Pacquiao has shown his political prowess and aspirations by becoming a legislator in his native Philippines. Now he is eyeing bigger offices with more time commitments according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.
"Being a legislator isn't hard work." Mr. Pacquiao said. "But an executive position is 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I feel I'm better suited to that. I feel I can do many things for my province."
In this instance, Pacquiao is referring to becoming Governor of his native province of Sarangani. If he says that being a governor is a 24/7 type of job, it doesn't sound like he could continue to be a professional boxer and complete his duties for in being a governor.
It seems that these types of distractions are becoming a normal occurrence in Manny Pacquiao's life. His political ambitions are just another distraction on top of his tax case, his newfound Christianity, and potential charges relating to the housing of a known criminal. Of course, distractions are nothing new to Manny Pacquiao as every episode of 24/7 has taught us. He likes to be constantly busy, with a multitude of people pulling for his attention.
Sergio Martinez Thinks He Can Land A Fight With Floyd Mayweather
After his lackluster performance against Matthew Macklin, it seems like Sergio Martinez is back to chasing big money fights. Even though Sergio is the mandatory challenger for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, it seems that everyone involved knows that this fight will never happen. Since Sergio Martinez is being thoroughly avoided by the top-grossing stars at both junior middleweight and middleweight, namely Saul Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, he needs to go to the stacked welterweight division to get a big name opponent. In an interview with Jhonny Gonzalez, Martinez ponders whether he could get a fight with Floyd since he is already fighting at the junior middleweight limit.
"[A fight with Mayweather is] not far from reality. Right now Floyd is fighting at 154 pounds against [Miguel] Cotto [on May 5th] and I can easily drop down from middleweight and measure myself [at 154-pounds] against Mayweather, and that would be something special for me...a dream fight," Martinez said. "A fight against Pacquiao is not in my plans because the Filipino only gets up to 145-pounds and I can not lose that much weight from 160."
