I'm going to assume Jack Dahm doesn't do things this way.

And I think I'm thankful for that. Beware the youtube clip, it has plenty of cussin'. (NSFW)

An ISU football assistant coach (and former ISU player) as well as a newly hired mens' basketball assistant coach, have both been arrested for DUI in the last week. I guess people outside of Johnson County do commit crimes, after all.

Playing the Spoiler: TV Shows and Movies.

So, earlier this week, a few of us were commenting on some post here on BHGP.  We were talking about the show "Justified" which is on FX.  And some jerk* with a name that references a past Iowa...

If you're wondering who Fran has in his sights, or if you're just waiting for Pat Harty's twice-annual decent article, click the link above. Let's hope the victory over Purdue is a gift that keeps on giving.

Media Coverage: A Question That's Been Nagging Me.

There is a question that has been bouncing around in my head for a few weeks now, in response to the troubles that Iowa's football program has encountered since the end of the regular season. That...

Anyone see the ESPN Town Hall Meeting on Friday?

29

Let me start by admitting that I'm sure some racism resides in me. I fight against it, and I think I'm winning that fight. And, I want to wish all people a nice MLK, Jr. holliday weekend, and I hope that the spirit of integration and cooperation continue to spread until our society is what it can and should be. However, I started watching my DVR'd version of the ESPN Town Hall Meeting about the Image of the Black Athlete on ESPN on Friday. They began with a panel of: Spike Lee, Marion Jones, John Calipari, and Randy Shannon. Really? I know that Spike Lee is now considered an expert on everything, so I guess I should have expected him. But, why allow Marion Jones to add this appearance to her "rehab my image" schedule? I like Randy Shannon, but how credible is he right now after being dumped by his alma mater a month ago? And John Calipari? Are you serious? I've only watched about 25% of this 2-hour program, so I can't make a complete opinion of it. It will be on again on Sunday, January 16th, on ESPN2, at 11 AM CT. I invite you all to check it out, and tell me if I am just being a grouch, or if this was a sub-par ESPN effort. Have a great weekend and MLK Day!

Hoopyball Hawks from the last couple years: Where are they now?

+

In case you were wondering about the whereabouts of guys like Jake Kelly, Lil' Lick, or Anthony Tucker, here is an article with some info. On a side note, I just want to say "Go Hawks!" to this year's team.

Yet another reason I'm happy that Ferentz, O'Keefe, and Parker are leading the Hawks.

1

Pitt's new coach (Mike Haywood, who was head coach of Miami OH this past year), has been jailed for perhaps the whole weekend because of an argument that got physical between him and his baby's momma. The lesson, as always: treat women with respect, or at least common courtesy.

Jason Baker has the need. The need for speed.

+

A couple of weeks ago, former Hawkeye Jason Baker (punter of the Carolina Panthers) chased down and tripped up Leon Washington of the Seahawks. I only heard about this today, so I'm sorry if I'm re-hashing old stuff.

I was reading some of SBNation's Minnesota Gopher blog, The Daily Gopher (mostly to see what the scuttlebutt was about their football coaching search). I stumbled onto a post that claims that, in 1935, the Gopher football players used a wooden pig before the bronze version of Floyd was created. I had never heard this story before, but I thought some of my fellow Hawk fans might enjoy it. You can find the article on The Daily Gopher at: http://www.thedailygopher.com/2010/11/24/1834194/the-original-floyd-of-rosedale-surfaces

I saw this on Sunday Night Football on NBC on November 21. They are adding solar panels and wind turbines to the Philadelphia Eagles' stadium (Lincoln Financial Field, aka The Linc). I never thought that place was pretty from the outside, but I think the wind turbines make it look like crap. On the other hand, the turbines, solar panels, and a small natural gas/biodiesel plant in the parking lot are supposed to supply all the energy the place needs, so... While it is nice to be nicer to mother earth, they better never add wind turbines to the top of Kinnick. Here is a link to the article where you can see a larger version of the photo: http://www.philly.com/philly/health_and_science/20101118_Eagles_aim_to_turn_Lincoln_Financial_Field_into_world_s_greenest_stadium.html?page=1&c=y

I just saw this pic today, and while I'm pretty sure it is from some past Olympics, it still made me laugh. Also, I think Iowa mens' basketball is going to do better than many people think. I was talking with my dad about this. Does anyone know if and when there might be a Black and Gold basketball scrimmage this year?

NCAA basketball tourney expansion.

8

So, as many expected, the NCAA tourney will now have 4 play in games, and the total amount of teams in the tourney will now be 68. One weird thing is that the 4 opening round games will now be called the "first four" or the "first round", and will be televised on Court TV (now Tru TV). I think they will be rotated between Tru TV, Turner (probably TNT), and CBS.

It's happening right now. (Pac 10 expansion)

3

They make it sound like Colorado got the "first invitation." I guess they really want Hawkins as a Pac 10 doormat as soon as they can get him.

Jewel Hampton arrested for public intox.

13

I guess Wegher and Robinson just solidified their first and second spots on the depth chart a bit more.

Ferentz Q&A with The Sporting News.

3

He says exactly what you would expect, except for one thing. Ferentz apparently wants Obama to get involved in the Big Ten expansion process. (Yes, I know he was joking, and I am being sarcastic.)
