I used to root for all sorts of teams. But now I am a Bears and Bulls guy. The Bears I watch as many games as I can see which usually isn't as many as I want since I don't live in the Chicagoland area anymore. I don't understand football anywhere near as well as I understand basketball. I can't watch a play and pick out why this or that offensive lineman didn't do what he was supposed to do and that is why the play broke down. I remember watching Frank Leahy on the news criticizing Frank Cornish Jr. for making an interception. He said he only made it because he was out of position. This is the stuff I just have never been able to tell.
Basketball is another animal entirely. I am Bulls fan. I've seen one playoff game (they lost). I have lots of teams that I love but I change every year based on how teams are playing. No, I'm not a front runner. There are just certain things I love.
Before I became a Bulls fan, I was a Loyola Ramblers fan. I believe they are the last division 1 A team from Chicago to win a National Championship (1963). They had the highest scoring team in the nation that year (92 points a game). They went up against a very good Cincinnati team that was going for a three peat. Cincinnati had the best defense in the country (53 points a game). And remember this is before the time of shot clocks. This is the time of letting the air out of the ball. Cincinnati was ahead by 15 points midway through the second half. Loyola came back and tied it up and won in when I believe Les Hunter missed and Vic Rouse tipped it in. If you like, you probably can find a copy of Red Rush screaming "We won!" for half an hour or so on eBay. Pretty exciting stuff but it doesn't even begin to tell everything about this team. The Loyola Ramblers were the first team where a majority of African-Americans participated in the NCAA championship game. What isn't well known (at least by most people today) is that before Loyola won there was a way of playing basketball that was boring and predictable. Loyola was differerent but they had one white point guard (Johnny Egan, if I remember correctly) and Texas Western has a movie made about them and everyone forgets about Loyola of Chicago. George Ireland had to face threats about the way he was playing. And if all this isn't enough. Mississippi State played against Loyola even though the governor and state police objected. Loyola had to be snuck in to play the game.

I'll have to update the Bulls section next time.
