Blogging The Boys The Twelve Labors of Hercules

The Cowboys challenges seem to be compounding with each passing season. We think we're plugging holes, only to find other areas of the dam rupturing, and suddenly we're taking on even more water. It's beginning to look like an overwhelming task to envision what can realistically be done.

I'm reminded of the life and challenges of Hercules. Ah, he was a resourceful, yet hexed fellow. Watching the upper echelon of the NFL perform recently, I'm tormented by the level of play that is considered the current best. Similar to the manner in which the goddess Hera so taunted Hercules, that in a fit of rage he killed his wife and children. While the hurdles facing the Cowboys do not encroach upon such life-altering tribulations, there are some parallels.

Blogging The Boys Playin' 10 on 11

I really hope somebody from the Cowboys reads this blog, sees this fanshot, and tells the player about it. Or a coach, or anyone. I hope somone in the organization goes back and watches this "player" snap after snap. Maybe they already do, I don't know. I have to think they couldn't. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to write this because he wouldn't be in the game.

I just finished watching the Cowboys-Cardinals again, and I did something I haven't really ever done before. From early in the first quarter I watched a single player, every snap, for the entire game. I have to say, it was one of the worst performances I have ever seen before. It lacked heart, desire, fight, instincts, and any sort of fire.

I decided early on, by say halftime that I was going to write this piece, and as I watched this particular player continue to suck, play after play after play, I was thinking of titles for this shot. The following came to mind:

Not even almost.

Spencer Blows.

Have you no pride?

I have so many misgivings about this guy. Before watching him for an entire game, I had nothing against him besides the fact that he had never produced the stats to distinguish himself. It's not like I hated him and decided to character assassinate him. I hoped he would break out. But if what he did against Arizona is any indication of how this man plays on a game by game basis, it's no wonder he has been a disappointment.

In general, on every play he is engaged by a blocker, who hits him once, then he is stood up, and the play is over for him. He doesn't try to elude blockers, he doesn't fight back, he got routed around the ball carrier on a regular basis. If I'm an opponent's blocker, I'm licking my chops when Spencer is my assignment, because I almost get to take the play off.

It became clear that he never seems to be around the ball. In fact, many times he shifted left or right at the snap, then watched as the ball carrier blew right through where he had been. He freezes frequently when he sees the runner in his area. He seems to have no awareness of what the offense is trying to do, and often looks totally surprised by the play call.

You say, "Well, he had a couple of tackles and a sack." Wrong. On his sack, Sean Lee busted up the middle and flushed Kolb out of the pocket. It was an awesome play. Once flushed out, Spears lumbered along chasing Kolb. Between Lee and Spears, they chased Kolb right into Spencer's arms. Spencer had just been standing there after his 40th play in a row of getting blocked once, and giving up. Spencer did nothing on that sack except be pushed to where the QB was going.

Well, he had a couple of tackles. Yeah, on one of them the ball carrier brought it right into Spencer's garage, and Spencer grabbed at him, got stiff armed right in the snout, and managed to hang onto the runner's belt. He was on the ground being dragged when the runner finally came down. So what does Spencer do? He gets up and helps the runner up, and pats him on the butt. Two Cowboys were on the ground right there, but he doesn't help them up, he makes sure to get the runner back off to the huddle.

On another play, Kolb was flushed out and ran towards Spencer. Almost Anthony reacts and begins pursuit. Only problem is Kolb ran right by him, then outran him to the next level. Pathetic. I know some of you may want to defend Spencer, and I'm sure he's had better games. It's hard to believe he's had worse games. Really, does he actually cash his checks? He should be ashamed.

So as I'm watching this garbage series after series, I'm thinking, surely the Cowboys will talk to him about this. Ryan has got to rip him for it, right? So many times you hear players defending other players who are the subject of such ridicule as I'm dishing out. And I'm thinking to myself, why would DeMarcus, or Sean Lee or any other player on this defense, or on this team for that matter, defend him? We're playing 10 on 11 out there. He's doesn't have his teammates back's. He's never around the ball. He gets blocked out of the play on every snap. He doesn't hustle, nor does he put up a fight. If we re-sign this guy I'll really have to question the Cowboy's judgement. I already am, because he wasn't benched after the first quarter. Seriously, put Butler or anyone else out there. At least he would put up a struggle. That's it. I got nothing else to say. The man is an embarrassment. Spencer, you SUCK!!!

Blogging The Boys The most deceiving element

It’s the bye week, and for some reason I just haven’t really felt like posting much lately. I know, why not do a fanpost? What more could make sense? The mystery of this is not so mysterious. I had a little time this morning, I'm having a thought lately that's just too big to post in someone else's thread, so why not?
