Kyle Orton waived
Given Orton's success in McDaniels' spread offense, it might be worth looking at him. $7.4M in salary is steep for a backup QB, but it might be viable if he clears the waiver wire and we re-negotiate. And it wouldn't hurt to have a proven commodity just in case Fitzpatrick gets injured.
I got to watching some of the highlights from the featured Marshawn Lynch fanpost and stumbled on this through boredom. I just needed a little break from all the draft talk. Completely unrelated to anything, but it made me smile and pray to all that is holy that Schobel doesn't retire.
Langston Walker has a tryout
I swear, if we spent all that money on Dock and Walker, just to send them back to their original teams...
Bills @ Steelers - 8/28: D-line breakdown
I know. I know. It's the day of the NEXT preseason game and I'm just publishing this now. I just couldn't find the time this week. The Lions game isn't going to be any faster, because apparently NFL Network feels that a Detroit/Buffalo match-up doesn't have that much drawing power. It plays at 7am on Sunday. Awesome. Hopefully, I can get something out for that by actual mid-week and not late mid-week next time though. 3 drives. The D didn't look too bad early, despite Aaron Schobel being out. I think it makes the coaches more creative, honestly.
Quick Hits:
- I'm starting to respect Spencer Johnson's versatility.
- Ryan Denney should not play RE. Not now. Not ever.
- I <3 Kyle Williams.
- The D seems to have shown good awareness despite playing a lot of minutes.

Bills @ Packers - 8/22: D-Line breakdown
[Note by Kurupt, 08/25/09 9:54 PM EDT] This deserves some front page love. WhyBillsWhy did a great job channeling his inner-Ron From NM for the defensive line.
OK, here goes. I was impressed by Ron From NM's O-Line posts from the first time I saw them. Sometime last week, about when kaisertown wrote his FanPost, it occurred to me that we complain about the Buffalo Bills' D-Line a lot, and perhaps it would be educational to break down those plays in addition to the O-Line. And then I started to do it. Ron, my hat is off to you because this sucks. This is just the starting D, because I couldn't take it anymore. Here we go...

A Little Diversion from FA...
This may sound crazy, but my brain is starting to bleed from waiting for news on the FA front (or as I like to call it, FrustrationWatch 2009).
I got to thinking about the 3-4 and why it's become so popular. From everything I've heard, players who work in a 3-4 are just more available via the draft than the physical specimens needed for the 4-3. That got me to thinking, maybe that same strategy, of using players most available in the draft, is the solution for offensive struggles agains the 3-4. From a personal standpoint, the Bills keep looking for that elite pass-catching tight end, that elite pocket-passing QB, that NT-mauling center. Maybe the solution can be found in a new offensive scheme with the athletes available in the draft.
Ladies and gentlemen, why don't teams move to the OPTION OFFENSE?
Presenting the Buffalo Bills #11 pick in the 2009 Draft...
Safeties
Rashad Johnson, Alabama
I said before the season started that Johnson was the most underrated safety in the country. Nick Saban says he is the smartest player he has ever coached. Another source told me Johnson is very smart and will do amazing in interviews at the Combine. His intangibles carry a first-round grade. He could be 2009's Donte Whitner. If that's not a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is...
Our Free Agent Situation
This is an outsider's take on our FA situation and who (if anyone) we should use the Franchise tag on. It just re-affirms my gut feeling that we need a hell of a draft to make improvements this year. Take a look:
BUFFALO BILLS: CB Jabari Greer. The starting right-cornerback for the Bills, Greer had 37 tackles and two INTs in 2008. The Bills though have Terrence McGee, Leodis McKelvin, and Ashton Youboty to work with. The thinking is, why spend the money when you can use that money to bolster a different position?
For a team that started 5-1, they could benefit from numerous changes: DE Chris Kelsay, C Melvin Fowler, WR Josh Reed, and TE Robert Royal. DE Julius Peppers will likely get tagged, so don't count on that Bills fans. Same goes for WR TJ Houshmandzadeh. TE Owen Daniels in Houston will likely get tagged to, and possibly C Matt Birk and C Jeff Saturday.
The best move then would be for Buffalo to pursue a WR like Detroit's Shaun McDonald or a TE like Tennessee's Bo Scaife, and focus draft picks on value rather than trade-ups for supposedly better players. The Bills in some ways are up a creek without a paddle. Their best moves would be to bolster their depth rather than their starters, and hope that the backups will bubble-up.
Ravens' McGahee expected to fully recover
Now, I know he's not the most popular guy here in Buffalo, but I thought for sure his career was ended when I saw this shot in the AFC Championship. Like him or not, I hope he gets well soon.
Thoughts on Personnel
I've been reading this blog for a few months and I've had thoughts rattling around in my head for a while now, but they all seem to be too long for a comment and too short to really post. So I'm going to post them all at once, let everyone shoot holes in them and see how bad my football knowledge really is.
