Gano Cut

Redskins sign former Pro Bowler Cundiff today, cut Gano.

Could FSU have a 1000 yard rusher this year?

A friend told me that David Pollock (sp?) on one of the ESPN network shows predicted it, which I immediately poo-poo'ed due to the likely running back by committee, but in rethinking it, maybe it is possible. Consider 1) offensive line improvement 2) breakaway threats 3) schedule Scenario - Chris Thompson stays healthy all season and in the opening games against Murray State and Savannah State has a few big yardage runs - FSU offensive line shoves around inferior competition and FSU backs break a few big ones once they get to the next level. Thompson pops some 40-70 yard runs in each game, and totals 300 yards despite only 16-20 carries in the first two games. Against Wake Forest, with 12-14 carries in the game, he breaks a few 20+ yard carries and ends up with 120 yards. Three game total is 420 yards, leaving only 580 yards to reach 1000 in the next 9 regular season games to reach it before any post-season or 65 yards per game - totally in reach. Considering that post-season games count toward totals, reaching the ACC champ game and a bowl gives 11 games to reach it, or just 53 yards per game.

CSU using an FSU technique

I recall the talk of Fisher bringing in mental conditioning coaches/training but not a lot of detail. This article on Colorado State using it goes to a bit more detail on what is involved with it. Interestingly, first school mentioned when it discusses mental conditioning is FSU.

Edwards Sr new director of Player Development

Mario Edwards is the new Director of Player Development at FSU. This was the position held by Terrell Buckley before he joined Terry Bowden's staff at Akron.

Summer plans of former BB Noles

The link in the header is for the Bucks announcement of its summer league roster, which includes Xavier Gibson. Of course, James will be with Dallas. Others: Derwin Kitchen with Denver Ryan Reid with the Thunder Al Thorton with Brooklyn Meanwhile, Toney Douglas is likely headed to the Suns as part of the Steve Nash sign and trade deal

FSU now #5 in ESPN recruiting rankings

Full details are behind a premium wall, sorry. but you can see the entire top 15 without an account, and see FSU is featured due to its rise from #9 to #5 since the last update of rankings.

Surprisingly good rushing game analysis by ESPN's new FSU beat writer

Surprisingly good analysis, given it is from ESPN. To summarize, it goes in depth on analyzing FSU rushing game. Factoring out sacks from all ACC schools, FSU's rushing per carry goes to 4.41 yards, just shy of the league average for teams that aren't Georgia Tech (4.5). And while FSU had only 165 carries that went 3 or more yards compared to league avg 228 (a reflection of the OL), the percentage that went 7+ yards (reflecting explosiveness and downfield blocking by non-OL) was 59.3% of those 165 carries, compared to 52.8% league avg. So if pass blocking improves and the OL can get that initial push on rushing plays, FSU's running game would appear to be set to explode.

Chris Casher becomes eligible

Casher's got the grades and test scores, appears to be just a matter of the NCAA Clearinghouse clearing him. "While Casher did not want to say exactly what his grade-point average was when he came to Davidson, Wright said it was 'the lowest core GPA I've ever had going into a senior year' for any student-athlete who eventually gained eligibility. "

New academic standards coming - and automatic redshirting requirements as a result

If I get this right, the incoming class of 2016 will have the same requirements to enroll, but if they fail a higher minimum (so many of the core classes completed before their senior high school year and a higher GPA), they can practice with the team but must redshirt. If they meet minimum first semester rules (9 credit hours passed and in good academic standing) then they can practice the second semester. Supposedly had this year's freshmen been under these rules, 40% of all freshmen across all sports and schools would have been redshirted due to the rules. What makes this different than the old "partial qualifiers" rule is that rather than having only three years to play after the first year, all would have four to play four after that first year if they are in good academic standing.

Expectations all over the place for EJ in mock drafts

One pundit has him as #2 overall in next year's draft (going to Buffalo), while many others have him outside the first round. Also contains some interesting quotes from Fisher. Upshot is, Fisher thinks the rest of the offense needs to step up - a good year next year for the offense is more on the supporting cast of Manuel, not EJ having a "player of the year" type of season.

Beau Reliford a Redskin

Reliford was at the Redskins rookie mini-camp this past weekend as a tryout invitee, and was signed afterwards.

Bunkley signs with Saints

Not all peachy this week for Denver. DT was a priority area for improvement via free agency for the Broncos. This is a step back for the Manning sweepstake winner.

Former FSU QB coach now at UMass

For us older farts who may remember when Mike Kruczek was FSU's QB coach. Actually began his coaching career at FSU back in 82. Stayed two years before getting the QB coaching job for the Jacksonville Bulls of the old USFL.

Seven questions (and two bonus) for 2012

Last year, I came up with seven questions for the offseason (defined as recruiting, spring, and preseason) as a means of determining what were the big seven questions for the offseason. The post...

Falling dominoes could have Edgar Bennett as OC at Miami or Green Bay

Former Seminole and Packer great Edgar Bennett, who was shifted from RB coach to WR coach at Green Bay before this season, could end up being the OC at either Green Bay or Miami, depending on what happens to Green Bay QB coach Clements

Iowa: The Harvard of Coaching - but only one more alum as coaches than FSU

FSU has as many alum as Division I football coaches as anyone but Iowa, according to the WSJ. Can anyone name them?

Golson (2013 commit) up for AL lineman of the year

Austin Golson up for Alabama 6A lineman of the year - only offensive lineman that is a finalist, and only junior up for it. Award to be announced Jan 18th. [A. Taylor played at a 6A school, and was not a finalist]

Terry Bowden hired at Akron

Terry Bowden moves on from North Alabama to a FBS school in Akron. Besides being a son of former head coach Bobby, Terry was a grad asst at FSU, and current FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher was the QB coach for Terry at Auburn.

FSU football assistants among highest paid | Tallahassee Democrat |

THought all articles on this site were subscription, but for a moment anyway I could read it. FSU is seventh of the 97 schools studied in football asst salaries - basically all but the private schools who can hied salaries.

ACC Financials

Report on revenue producing sports in the ACC. Report admits that it can be apples to oranges compariing programs. FSU reported a "jump" in football profit, but it coincides with a change in the way FSU athletics did its accounting.

Former Eagle Brodrick Bunkley is fitting in fine with the Broncos - The Denver Post

Bunkley talks his recruiting to FSU within. Talks of how he was working out in Miami gear when his future position coach (unnamed in the article, but it would have been Odell H.) arrives within an unexpected guest - Bobby Bowden.

Jernigan defensive rookie of the year runner up

ACC DEFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Merrill Noel, cb, Wake Forest (31)\ Timmy Jernigan, dt, Florida State (7) Anthony Chickillo, de, Miami (5) Andre Monroe, dt, Maryland (1)

Shawn Powell, Terrance Parks

Think Powell is draftable? Most punters are UFAs. His 47 per punt average would be 10th in the NFL, his 43 percent inside the 20 would be top 5, and his season long of 69 would be 6th (one punter with a 73 yarder, four others tied with a 70 yard). Add in his skill as a holder, and I could see him as a 6th or 7th round pick.

Broyles nominees - no FSU defensive assistant named

Seems Stoops should have been nominated. Or even Odell, for the way the DTs played this year.

Mark and Mike Stoops reportedly tell FAU they're not interested in school's head coaching job

FAU was talking numbers less than Mark makes at FSU as DC. Even if they came up, I'm sure so would FSU.
