The ACC Tournament Starts Today And Georgia Tech Must Realign Itself
Georgia Tech baseball has found itself in a position that it hasn’t worried about for 32 years as they absolutely had to beat Miami on Sunday to make it into the ACC Tournament. The Jackets faced history as being the first GT squad to miss the conference tournament since the Institute joined in 1980. But all this doesn’t matter anymore as they were able to make it into the postseason. Now the Jackets realize that they must continue to win in the ACC Tournament, ironically a tournament that nobody likes, to remain alive for any postseason.
It’s been one of those years for the Yellow Jackets where the arms got injured and the bats couldn’t connect at the opportune times like we’ve always been used to. Regardless, the team made it into the conference tournament and we can consider the slate almost completely wiped clean.
The ACC Tournament is a unique one as it only takes the Top-8 teams where there are 2 brackets of 4 teams that play round-robins within themselves and the top team from each bracket plays a championship game. As Tech played its way into the #8 seed, they will play Florida State, Virginia, and Clemson throughout the week. First pitch game 1 will be today at 11AM EST.
Finding updated NCAA Tournament baseball projections can be difficult but Perfect Game USA has some available. There, Kendall Rogers has GT as one of the last teams to make it in the tournament and slated to be a #3 seed in Columbia, SC. Don't ask questions, just accept the placement.
In order to solidify themselves in the NCAA Tournament, winning is crucial and it all starts today.
SEC And Big12 Create Bowl Partnership. ACC Says "Now What?"
What do you think? The ACC is now left all alone looking at the ladies from the MWC or elsewhere wondering if it's better to dance or not.
Or better yet, the ACC can always hope to be 5th best and maybe, just maybe if wherever there is an MNC team from one of those conferences (B12/SEC or P12/B1G) the bowls will reach out to the ACC.
Give me your thoughts!
FTRS Roundtable: What Has Happened To Our Favorite Sport, College Football?
Conference expansion talk just won't go away. We've passed the point of no return. The FTRS guys got together to discuss the issue:
LilBroey700 - At the end of last week, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Florida State came out and publicly stated that the school was unhappy with the ACC's long-term TV deal with ESPN, and that they would be exploring the possibility of a move to the Big 12, although no contact has been had yet, allegedly. Recent news also involved talks about redeveloping the BCS system, likely involving a plus-one game, although Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany has publicly stated his support for a system that would require schools to be conference champions to be eligible for the championship. The implication here is largely that independents Notre Dame and BYU would have to join a conference, lest they have no chance at a championship and watch their programs go down in a fiery ball. Let's talk scenarios here. What would you say the chances are that Florida State leaves the ACC, or that Notre Dame/BYU join conferences, and if that happens, what does it mean for Georgia Tech and its future?
Personally, my opinion isn't so much based on Florida State or BYU as Notre Dame. I can easily see Notre Dame being spooked by the idea of being left out of the championship hunt, and enticed to join either the Big Ten or ACC (for academic quality and non-football athletic quality...although they compete in the Big East in every sport except football). Joining the Big Ten creates a scenario where the Big Ten would then be at 13 schools, and could shoot for as many as 16 to round themselves out. From there, the names I've heard thrown around for joining are Georgia Tech, Maryland, and Rutgers. All 3 are of acceptable athletic quality, are in a major TV market (Atlanta, DC, New York), and are members of the Association of American Universities.
Dear Georgia Tech Graduates. I Bet You Feel Like A Badass Don't You?
I have two brothers at Georgia Tech currently. Come Saturday, I'll just have one brother left at Georgia Tech as the middle one in the family will walk across the stage in the Georgia Dome to accept that hallowed piece of paper from Bud Peterson. Along with my brother, a couple thousand more engineers, managers, PhDs, mathematicians, and scientific liberal arts students (yes, we have a form of that at GT) among others will also close their own personal chapter with Ma Tech. Congratulations!
Graduates: hear my advice!
1. You feel like a badass because you are. But humility must still be a part of your personality.
Georgia Tech is elite. Revel in it. Many of you know classmates got weeded out over the years and but you pursued and kept going. Many of you are graduating from recognized and continuous Top-10 programs in the country. That persistent attitude should be well recognized. Welcome to the fraternity of alumni who understand and feel your pain of the stress Tech put you through. You're coming out with degrees that will get you jobs almost immediately in positions that some may have worked years to reach. With those jobs you will suddenly realize that not all people who have jobs went to Georgia Tech. In fact, there are hundreds of ways others can get to the same position you have by not going to Georgia Tech. Realize this fact, and be humble in all things. Be grateful for the opportunities that were given to you and continue to strive for excellence as you did at our beloved Institute.
2. You will say and do the wrong thing to the wrong person
Just because we graduated does not mean we'll never fail. My first year out is a classic example of this fact. However, we didn't go to Georgia Tech to just learn how to succeed. We learned how to adjust after a failure and how to improve the outcome the next time the opportunity comes around. In the real world now you'll be faced with many decisions. You'll be able to analyze the situation and make a firm decision but some will still be wrong. It will be up to you to take that step back, figure out what went right , what went wrong, adjust, and be ready for the next time.
3. Once your walk across the stage, your liver will change instantly
It's as if a switch is flipped inside your body. What used to be a few beers on a weekday night will turn into a nasty hangover. Be wary!
4. You will forever represent Georgia Tech
Figure out how to give back through time, service, or money, and advertise positively for Georgia Tech. The Institute is recognized throughout the world. Wherever you go, you will run into someone who recognizes our logo and understands what it means. You now represent Georgia Tech in everywhere you go. Advertise it well and remember whose reputation you are now responsible to uphold.
5. Buy football season tickets through the right channels
C'mon now. You have money. You can buy tickets through the Athletic Association. No excuses.
6. As always and forever, To Hell with georgia!
Sincerely,
Winfield Tufts, ISyE 2010
Stephen Hill Is Still Waiting For An NFL Draft Phone Call
In some slightly surprising events last night during the NFL Draft, Stephen Hill was not drafted by the San Francisco 49ers nor was he drafted by the Houston Texans. Depending on who you talked to, either team was interested in the wide receiver.
ESPN will air the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the Draft starting at 7pm and I would be very surprised to see Hill fall out of tonight's segment. He has too much raw talent to do so. In fact, SBNation's 2nd Round Mock Draft now has Hill drafted by the New York Jets.
What's your opinion?
Paul Johnson Quietly Carving Out Legacy In Shadow of Georgia Tech Legends
Nice piece written by Tony Barnhart of CBSSports.com. It was actually written on Wednesday but it just now appeared in my RSS feed.
John Heisman, Bill Alexander, Bobby Dodd, Bobby Ross.
What do these four men have in common? They were all very successful coaches at Georgia Tech. Heisman, Alexander and Dodd are all in the College Football Hall of Fame. All four men won national championships for the Yellow Jackets...But none of them holds the school record for wins (33) in his first four seasons as head coach at Georgia Tech.
John Jenkins of uga just needs his binky in this picture
Former Georgia Tech Wide Receiver Calvin Johnson Takes Madden 13's Front Cover
It an announcement made an hour ago on ESPN"s Sportsnation TV show, it was announced that Calvin Johnson beat out Cam Newton in a fan vote to determine who got the front of EA Sports NFL video game Madden 13. The above picture is a screenshot of the ESPN website at the time of this publishing.
Fans of Georgia Tech know how valuable Calvin is to a sports squad and with the growing success of the Detroit Lions, his fame has continued to pick up steam. This is just one more step in CJ's career towards being one of the greats in the NFL.
Congratulations Calvin!
Georgia Tech vs. georgie Game 2: Turner Field Game Tonight
Every season, the Yellow Jackets and bulldogs square off three times. Once in Athens, once at Turner Field, and once at Russ Chandler. The second of these matchups is tonight at 7pm. The first game was at uga. The bulldogs won 7-1. First pitch is tonight at 7pm. Tickets are $12 are will benefit Children's Hospital. georgia is 7-2 against Tech at games played at Turner Field.
The Jackets are coming off an impressive series win over the North Carolina Tarheels this weekend where they rediscovered what it's like to play "Georgia Tech baseball" and have improved their record to 24-17 overall and 9-12 in the conference. georgia is also 24-17 overall with a record of 8-10 in the SEC.
Go Jackets! See you at the ballpark!
Georgia Tech Football: What We Can Look For On Friday Night
The Georgia Tech Friday night Spring Game is only two days away and there is quite a bit to look forward to beyond just football being back for a night.
Here are some things to be on the lookout for come Friday night.
1. The Athletic Department continues to market to the fans.
If you listen to 99x at all you know that there will be a pre-game tailgate and post-game concert in Callaway Plaza. Civil Twilight will be headlining the festivities.
2. The Georgia Tech Running Back Shuf-fle
Just about everyone has taken turns at A-back and B-back, including Synjyn Days, David Sims, and Charles Perkins.
3. The offensive line won't look like it will come September
I overheard some kids talking during lunch over the weekend about the Georgia Tech O-Line. One kid said "How can we even have a spring game when we can't field an offensive line?".
Up to 5 OL players have encountered some sort of injury during spring practices.
4. The Shotgun ain't dead yet!
5. A "go-to" receiver
Time to see a new receiver take control of the position and fill the shoes of Stephen Hill and Demaryius Thomas.
6. Nose Tackle improvement
These are my top 5 things I'll be looking for on Friday. By no means is it extensive or 100% informed or educated. What will you look for?
Georgia Tech Baseball Gets Swept By #2 Florida State Seminoles
The 23rd-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were looking and hoping for a solid series against Florida State so that they could keep building up momentum as the season inches to an end. While played well at the beginning for two games, baseball lasts nine and the Seminoles outlasted the Yellow Jackets 2-1, 12-7, and 8-4. If the Jackets aren't on the ropes yet, they're dangerously close as they've fallen to 19-14 overall and 6-9 in conference.
In Games 1 and 2, Tech had the chance to capitalize but couldn't. Runners were left on base throughout the entire series and that timely hit could not be found. That's just the difference between consistent baseball (FSU) and inconsistent baseball (GT).
Georgia Tech will play Mercer on Tuesday night at Russ Chandler Stadium at 6pm. The Jackets still have a chance for a turnaround against traditional baseball powerhouses. ACC remaining series are @Wake Forest, @UNC, vs Clemson, @UVA, and vs. Miami - the hardest stretch for the most desperate time.
C'mon Jackets!
Pours One Out For A Blogging Bro
When I first started blogging, I had a torrent of RSS Feeds throughout the ACC and other sites that I read through daily. I was in school at the time and reading about football was more enjoyable and more fun that studying probability or supply chain economics. Today, reading about football is still more fun than most things, but now that I have a job, the paycheck comes first and my reading has fallen off and I only have to stay up to date on Georgia Tech news. So this is why just late last night did I realize that my blogging bro furrer4heisman of GobblerCountry has decided to hang it up. I guess he decided it was finally time to move out of his parents basement.
Has it really been four years? I remember when we were still "blogging n00bs" over on wordpress and blogspot trying to find our niche. I had just gotten serious into gmail and was wondering how this Virginia Tech guy was suddenly suddenly showing up on my gchat list. Since, then f4h became one of my favorite turkeybirds and good friend - various drunken shenanigans have proven as much. I've always enjoyed the interactions between FTRS and GC. I think it was evident that both sites were created out of sheer love for the game, bourbon, and trash-talk and I hope you enjoyed it as well.
GobblerCountry is going through the natural lifecycle of the blogosphere. A site shows up, stays a while, grows, consumes, and exhausts. It's just what happens and you come to learn to expect it. I've seen many a site flare up and die within weeks. I've seen many writers publish a post and disappear. Four years is a long time for a hobby-blog. Four years was a grand time for my good blogging bro.
Farewell my friend, it's been fun.
*Pours one out for the homie*

FromTheRumbleSeat: March Madness Pick 'Em Rankings Update
With the Final Four looming in New Orleans this weekend, who looks to take the coveted spot along our "Sidebar of Fantasy Champions" for NCAA Tournament Pick 'Em? Top 10 below:
Missouri?! What was I thinking?! We could have some major drama if we see a Kentucky vs. Kansas National Championship Game between "Imperial March Madness" and "2009 ACC Champs".
Rest of the rankings can be viewed here.
What was your best pick of the tournament? Mine was NC State going to the Sweet 16.
GT Athletics Performance Review: MaChelle Joseph
If I were to say "2011-2012 Georgia Tech basketball", I would wager that you would immediately think about the men's program and the struggles that is went through respectively. But you're wrong. We're not here today to talk about the men's team. Instead, we're going to take a few minutes to give the women's team and MaChelle Joseph their due. While we all counted down the days until the basketball season ended, Coach Joseph took her team and got them to yet another record season and NCAA Tournament finish.
Without playing a real home-game, the Georgia Tech women set records in both conference and season win totals. Their hard work paid off with a #3 seed in the NCAA tournament this year, their highest, breaking last year's mark of being a #5. Coach Joseph has them slowly moving up the ladder into the elite programs' dinner table.
Coach Joseph completed her ninth year at Georgia Tech this past season. To be honest, I had no idea she had been there that long. I didn't know a remote thing about women's basketball until I came to the Institute in 2005. Now I feel like I know a few, not many but a few, things, and it's all because of the success that has been achieved by the basketball team. The success experienced by the women's program is indicative of the coaching style and persona that Coach Joseph brings to the court. In her 9 seasons as head coach, Joseph has claimed 179 victories (19.8 per season).
If you watch ESPN, you can't help but know about Baylor, Tennessee, and UCONN women's basketball. It's a small elite band of teams that will always win. It's a steep drop-off from the "elite" to the "good" and "above average" but at the end of every regular season, I see a new record here, a landmark victory there, and I begin to wonder if the gap is closing between those "elites" and Georgia Tech itself. RamblinWreck.com has a great piece on the basketball team in "A Season To Remember By The Numbers" in which it helps us really understand how good this team was that Coach Joseph built.
MaChelle Joseph is the 5th coach in women's basketball history. No one should be looking for the 6th.
Georgia Tech Tennis Coach Charged With Rape
Not the most pleasant news story to wake up to in the morning. Notice the word "charged" because the female is accusing the coach and that's how the system works. However, the marijuana and cocaine charges don't help either.
Gone Traveling. See You In Two Weeks
During the March Madness, I'll be "out of the office" for the next two weeks on a European "BROcation" with my two younger brothers as they are both on Spring Break. I leave you all in the comfort of the rest of the FTRS team. Please make sure they don't burn the house down.

FTRS Wants To Know Who Your Cinderella Is And How'd You Pick Them In The NCAA Tournament
I still get excited about the NCAA Tournament whether or not Georgia Tech made it or not. I think it was always because of the amount of games I could watch in the middle of the day (school hours). It made it feel like a very special occasion. Now, with all the TV networks getting some slice of the basketball pie, it's set up so that we can watch the tip-off of every game without too much of a problem, but some of that excitement still remains.
This afternoon, I want to know who your Cinderella is, if you even have one. When I threw in the towel on Georgia Tech's season, I seemed to have also thrown in the towel for the rest of the 2011-2012 season so I went "chalk" on many teams and my final four team is quite boring: Missouri, Kentucky, UNC, and Ohio State and Ohio State. My Cinderella teams are NC State (#11) and Murray State (#6) both making the Sweet 16.
Who's your Cinderella?
Don't forget! There's still a small window of time left to get in on FTRS' and SBNation's Bracket Challenges! I was able to scrounge up the Clint Castleberry biography and the winner of this site's Challenge gets the book as well as their name on our Sidebar of Honor.

Join FTRS' And SBNation's Bracket Challenges!
Georgia Tech never lost all chances to be in the NCAA tournament this year but that doesn't mean we can't still have fun with brackets. We just won't have to worry about a "head" and a "heart" bracket (trying to find a silver lining here guys).
There are multiple ways you can jump in and play March Madness with all your FTRS/SBNation friends.
1. Join FTRS' NCAA Bracket Challenge. I'll be traveling and working in both Mexico and Europe. Think you can beat me while I'm only putting one eyeball on the tournament? Group Name: From The Rumble Seat. PW: gojackets
2. Join SBNation's NCAA Bracket Challenge. The entire network is putting together a competition and I want to see the champion come out of FTRS. There is no password required for entry in this bracket contest.
My biggest troubles are picking 8/9 and 5/12 games. This year will be the worst as I have not really paid too much attention to college basketball this year, I mean Florida State got the #3 seed in the ACC this year? Wut? My 5/12 picks will literally be coin flips. What about you?

Can't say I'm surprised because whenever the NCAA makes a decision, they just plug their fingers in the years and go "BLAH BLAH BLAH I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"

We have finally followed in the network's footsteps and have launched our very own youtube channel. To kick things off, I did my best Gene Hackman impersonation to inspire the Yellow Jackets tonight for their game against the Miami Hurricanes. Tip is around 9pm tonight.
BTW, we'll improve our audio situation in upcoming segments.

Friday Discussion: Georgia Tech Basketball Is Almost Over, Georgia Tech Baseball, And Running Races
First of all, let's not forget that the Georgia Tech basketball team will play its final regular season game tomorrow at 12pm vs. the Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Philips Arena. It will be senior night. There are two seniors on the roster in Nick Foreman and Derek Craig. Thanks for the work you put in guys.
Second, Georgia Tech baseball hosts the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in a three-game weekend series at Russ Chandler Stadium. The Yellow Jackets are off to a pretty good start to the baseball season and are ranked #12 in the country. Let's see them keep it up.
Thirdly, here's something cool. Georgia Tech will be hosting the 2012 Guthman Musical Instrument Competition. Music Technology and Georgia Tech. We shouldn't be surprised that the Institute is hosting something Wired.com calls "the X Prize of Music."
Finally, Do any of you run the Pi Mile race? Registration is (has) been open and if you have never run it, I suggest you sign up and make it your newest "thing". The 5k Pi Mile is a lot of fun if you're a serious runner or just want to run it for the sake of Georgia Tech. This year will be my second year participating and I plan to continue it for as long as I can.
Speaking of running, I'm on my way to south Jawja (Albany) for a half marathon where it's expected to be an 80% chance of thunderstorms. Won't that be fun?
Go Jackets!

Stephen Hill Runs 4.36 40. Twitter Reacts
Georgia Tech fans knew Stephen Hill was fast. Twitter and other football fans on the other hand, didn't know so much about him. Yesterday twitter reacted to Hill's 40 time and it was a range of reactions from surprised to ignorant.

Two other wide receivers also ran the 40 in 4.36 seconds, Travis Benjamin of Miami and Chris Owusu of Stanford. It is the fastest out of all participants in the combine. As a final point of reference, Calvin Johnson ran the 40 yard dash in 4.35 seconds back in the 2007 Combine (he worked his way down to 4.33 seconds in a private workout later that year).
