From John Heyman at SI, his list of 34 minor leaguers who put together great spring trainings in 2009 and got some good buzz going.

Both Pedro Alavarez and Andrew McCutchen made the list. He calls Alvarez "A hitting sensation" and says of ACutch: "Maturing all-around talent will make an impact soon, if not immediately."

And, FYI Keith Law, Justin Smoak did not make the list. So sad.

P.S. If you keep reading past the mostly NYY and NYM updates, Heyman reports that Paul Maholm "is justifying his big contract extension signed a few weeks ago."

Jason Bay playing out his option?

ESPN reports that Bay and Red Sox have ceased negotiations on a contract extension. Bay is a free agent after this year.

Bay said: "You play for six years and you earn the right to be a free agent, and you don't want to sell yourself short. That doesn't mean that there doesn't have to be some concessions. But you put yourself in this position, and I think it's in my best interest to kind of explore."

If Luigi's spring training stats are not a mirage, with Tabata crushing the ball, at least some of the pitchers coming through (Mr. Wonderful?), and with Nady maybe just a bench player for the Yankees this year, Huntington's July '08 trades are looking better and better for the PBC.
