I know Aubrayo Franklin was a popular name during last years free agency and I believe he is again a free agent this year. Now after somewhat of an off year with the Saints would you be happy if Pioli & co. brought in Franklin for a visit? I vote yes.

Chargers announce they have signed LB Jarrett Johnson to a 4 year deal per Adam Caplan (twitter). Pro Football Focus states he might be the best in the league at setting the edge vs the run.

Well thats great, our AFC division rivals keep getting better and the Chiefs, well, we prefer mediocrity.

Where has Mannings agent Tom Condon been in all of this?
It's hilarious reading all the local reporters from Denver and Arizona claiming a deal is imminent when Mannings agent is nowhere to be seen. It's known that Condon likes KC and call me crazy but I strongly believe KC has been talking with Manning and "his people" this whole time. On Monday KC will shock the football world!

Unless the Chiefs under Pioli suddenly have changed their ways, the publicly-acknowledged interest in Manning likely is part of a plan that doesn’t play out with Peyton playing more than once per year at Arrowhead Stadium.

Basically saying this could all be a ploy to try and make Denver overspend while at the same time lighting a fire under Cassel. I hope this isn't the case.

What are the odds that Peyton has already visited with the Chiefs yesterday and the organization is simply trying to keep this under wraps? We all know how secretive Pioli & Co. are and it's also known that Manning doesn't neccesarily want to deal with a media circus. So, Clark throws us fans a bone in an interview stating that Peyton will be pursued by the Chiefs just to keep us satisfied without giving away too much. There is no advantage in showing your hand to other teams around the league other than getting your name on ESPN, like the Broncos, Cardinals and Dolphins. I believe there's alot more going on behind closed doors than the Chiefs management will ever reveal to the masses, until the day that Peyton signs with KC.

Today is the day for deals to be made. Buffalo is expected to resign Stevie Johnson very soon. Let's hope this is the case with D. Bowe and the Chiefs.

This whole Stanford Routt signing has got me pumped for the start of free agency. That being said, I believe one position the front office would like to address is RB. Jackie Battle has already made it clear he'd like to test the FA waters and with that I say, goodbye Jackie, nice knowing you. There's a pretty good pool of FA running backs this year and I'm confident that an upgrade over JB is forthcoming. So AP, if you had your choice of RB's this year in FA, who would you take? Peyton Hillis, The Lawfirm BGE, Mike Tolbert, Cedric Benson, or someone else?

Ken: Is Todd Haley's personality a problem? He didn't get along with the GM, right? Anything else? Is he the one making those strange accusations about the offices being bugged? The Rooneys must think the world of Dick Haley, right?

Gerry Dulac: They do think the world of Dick Haley, which is why I think they granted his son, Todd, an interview. Todd Haley has had a difficult time getting any interviews since he was fired by the Chiefs, and part of the problem is his reputation for being unable to get along with players and, more importantly, his fellow coaches. The Steelers, in my opinion, are merely doing Haley a favor, which is why I also think they announced his interview on their website. Since when did they ever do that? Did they announce on their website that they interviewed Jim Caldwell for the same position two days earlier? Of course not.

They want to help Haley get the ball rolling again, as a favor to his dad. At least, that's my opinion. Coaches who might know say Tomlin will not hire Todd Haley.

Steeler reporter Gerry Dulac helps shine some light on the Todd Haley interview in this online chat.

I can't wait for free agency to start this year. After just finishing last in our division at 7-9, Kansas City might not seem too appealing to some, but my feeling is quite the contrary. We will be getting back our most talented players on both offense and defense, we have a new head coach who is respected by all and a guy who players WANT to play for, and a GM who is in his 4th year of what has so far been a disappointing run.

I think/hope Pioli is aggressive in addressing some needs in FA so that way when the draft roles around we have more freedom to draft based on best player available in certain situations. KC remains a franchise with "it's arrow pointing up" so let's hope we see Pioli prove that this year during FA.

The setting was a team meeting a few weeks ago, after Crennel was appointed interim coach. He stood before his players as their tenuous leader, nobody quite certain how he would use the power … and he dogged Thomas Jones. In front of the entire team. Understand that as much as Todd Haley earned his reputation as a disciplinarian, players grew to think that some guys were off-limits.

This was a special status. Matt Cassel made it as the quarterback. Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali worked themselves into it. Casey Wiegmann earned it based on his long career, and so did Jones. So this group of players had never seen Jones called out by the head coach. Certainly not for everyone to see, and as they scooted up in their chairs and pushed their heads forward to get a better look, you know what happened next?

I'm glad to hear that Crennel sees no player as "off limits" like Haley did, hopefully that includes Matt Cassel in 2012.

IF Alabama RB Trent Richardson were to fall to the Chiefs in this years draft should Pioli take him? I realize that as a franchise this would be somewhat of a luxury pick seeing as how we have other positions of need that could be addressed. But, T. Rich is easily the best RB in this years class. The guy set multiple weight lifting records at Alabama, beating out OL/DL, and could have lifted more but they cut him off. He pulls away from defenders when he sees the hole and he's been playing against the best defenses in college football in the SEC. Jamaal Charles is coming off a season ending knee injury and our depth behind him isn't stellar. You draft Richardson and pair him with a healthy Charles and I don't care if Tyler Palko is your QB (yes I do), you just turn around and hand the ball off to your two studs. So, what do you say AP, T. Rich in 2012?

It was another solid game for rookie LB Justin Houston yesterday. He added another 1.5 sacks to his yearly total and was all over the field on Sunday. Give this kid a full offseason and training camp to get ready for next year and look out! Allen Bailey is another guy I'm excited about. If our young defense continues to improve, I see this as a top 5 unit next year.

16. Chiefs (No. 20; 4-3): Brandon Flowers told PFT Live last week that the Chiefs are the team to beat in the AFC West. The Chargers couldn’t.

18. Chargers (No. 10; 4-3): If Philip Rivers ever gets a chance to lift the Lombardi, there’s now a good chance he’ll drop it.

The replay review that overturned a correct call on the field of an incompletion as Matt Cassel was hit, converting the down into a fumble, was as bad a call as TMQ has seen. Cassel's hand had started forward when he was hit by a defender. The NFL rule states, "A pass begins when the passer -- with possession of ball -- starts to bring his hand forward. If ball strikes ground after this action has begun, play is ruled an incomplete pass. If passer loses control of ball prior to his bringing his hand forward, play is ruled a fumble." Cassel's hand started forward, then the ball struck the ground -- incompletion. The ball has to come out before the hand starts forward for the result to be a fumble. Referee Alberto Riveron seemed not to know the rule he was supposed to enforce.

Both this call and the DMC fumble really had me fuming on my couch...

Brandon Carr, Chiefs, CB: Facing the Chargers and their potentially explosive aerial attack means several isolated matchups against a pair of big, physical receivers in Vincent Jackson and Malcolm Floyd. In their last outing, the Chiefs challenged the duo by instructing Carr (and Brandon Flowers) to play extensive press coverage on the outside. The constant harassment disrupted the timing of the Chargers' passing game and resulted in Philip Rivers tossing two interceptions. With Romeo Crennel likely to utilize the tactic again, Carr's ability to hold up on the outside will be critical to the Chiefs' success.

2. Todd Haley, Kansas City
It's hard to find anybody who doesn't think Haley is a dead man walking. The Chiefs haven't just regressed, they've made people wonder how last season's success happened in the first place. Add in the fact that Haley is in the third year of a four-year deal -- and that the Chiefs haven't even faced the hardest part of their schedule -- and you get the picture. Pioli probably already has a short list of successors in place.

Number one on this four man list is Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano.

Pioli was hired to be the resident genius three years ago, the man who helped New England become a dynasty right alongside Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. Right now, it's hard to believe the hype. This offseason he made little attempt to improve a roster that had some glaring flaws, and his biggest acquisition in free agency was wide receiver Steve Breaston. Standing pat after a strong season works well when you're as loaded as Green Bay or Pittsburgh. It's a pretty big gamble when you're a team that feasted on a weak schedule in 2010 and then wilted in a blowout playoff loss to Baltimore.

Even the luster of Kansas City's division championship seems tainted now, more fluke than feel-good story. When you look at the end of last season, you see a team that was outscored 61-17 in its final two games. That should have been a major red flag, an omen that this team faced a much longer climb to reach the NFL's upper echelon. Now it is simply a squad that has to question everything about its organization, starting with the invisible man at the top of the power structure.

Matt Cassel's last three games (Week 17, 2010 vs. Raiders: 11 of 33, 115 yards, no touchdowns and two picks; wild-card game vs. Ravens: 9 of 18, 70 yards, no touchdowns and three picks; Sunday: 22 of 36, 119 yards, one touchdown and another interception) were all at home.

A year ago, the Bills lost in overtime to Kansas City. What a difference a season makes. The Bills dominated from the start, abusing Matt Cassel with some new defensive parts and pounding the Chiefs through the air and on the ground, and Gailey returned to the place where he was fired two years ago to embarrass the Chiefs and put early heat on the coach who decided he was expendable, Todd Haley.

It's just one game, true. Teams can bounce back from a loss, absolutely. But there's no denying that teams that win on opening weekend increase their chances of making the playoffs.

Since 1978, when the NFL went to the 16-game schedule -- and excluding the abbreviated season of 1982 -- teams that are victorious on opening weekend are more than twice as likely to reach the playoffs as losers of an opening game are.

Let's hope the Chiefs start this season strong, with a W!

Kansas City Chiefs

Best-case scenario: Charles is the second coming of Eric Dickerson, and Cassel's rib injury opens up an opportunity for Tyler Palko to emerge in the same way that Drew Bledsoe's sheared chest gave Tom Brady a chance. Palkomania sweeps the AFC West.

Worst-case scenario: Cassel's never healthy, and his interception rate spikes back up after last year's ridiculous 1.6 percent rate. The team starts 0-5 before its bye and then quits on Haley, who gets canned by the end of the year.

Now it's time for Bowe to take the next step in the leadership department. If he hasn't done so already, he needs to pull Baldwin aside and explain how fragile an NFL career can be. He needs to let Baldwin know that being a first-round pick only means you have more responsibility on your shoulders, more reasons to prove why you belong at this level in the first place.

This isn't to say Bowe is heading for the Hall of Fame or that Baldwin couldn't create his own impressive legacy if everything fell right. It's just common sense. All young players need guidance, and they tend to learn best from those who already understand the road map.

One can see how much Cassel gravitates to Moeaki. He's Dallas Clark. The way Peyton Manning flexes Clark tight and wide and in the slot is the way Kansas City wants to use Moeaki, who had 47 catches a year ago but could have 80 in this offense if he stays healthy, which has been a problem at times for him in college and the NFL."You can make Moeaki whatever,'' said Haley. "You can make him Wes Welker if you want.''

I told him he looks like Dallas Clark, the way he was used in this practice. "I watch a lot of Dallas Clark film,'' he said. "We both went to Iowa, and so it's good to be able to see what he's been able to do in the NFL. I watch him to see how he gets open against all different defenses. That's helped me.''

So, what do you think Moeaki's stats will look like this year?

Keary Colbert (remember?) has a shot to make KC--and it won't be due to weak competition. It'd be because Haley/Pioli like him a lot.

The irony is not lost on the city of Denver that John Elway is judging a QB controversy between Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow. This is like Heidi Klum judging a bikini contest at a fat farm. Doesn't matter anyway. It's over. Orton won by the kind of margin Kim Jong Il wins elections. If it had been a pee wee basketball game, they'd have turned the scoreboard off.

Tebow looked like a man being chased by bees. He barely got off a pass (1-for-3) and was sacked three times. Nice kid, sincere as a first kiss, but he's not ready yet, might never be ready. Somebody alert the Filipino missionaries. If he doesn't improve, he might be among them sooner than we thought.

Rick Reilly's assessment of Tebow after last Saturdays intrasquad scrimmage. Feels so good to be a Chiefs fan!

11. Kansas City Chiefs
Todd Haley is the NFL's version of Rangers manager Ron Washington. No two head honchos in sports resemble a homeless guy better than Haley and Washington. Still, Haley has done a nice job working in conjunction with Scott Pioli to carve this team both in his image and that of the Patriots. Don't look for the Chiefs to fall flat.

The Chiefs are the highest ranking AFC West team on this list, followed by the Chargers at #12.
