All Things Eagle: Andy, are you on BGN?
That was an amazing game.
And I'm pretty sure Andy Reid heard one of my posts, where my wishlist consisted of
-more Michael Vick
-more Leonard Weaver
-more Reggie Brown
We got all of that in the same game. Brown, 64 receiving yards? Nice. Weaver, 110 all-purpose yards and a touchdown? Nice. Vick, two touchdowns, 48 yards passing, 17 yards rushing? Nice.
While we were, agreeably, against a pretty bad Falcons offense (no Turner, no Ryan), DALLAS ENDED UP LOSING TO THE GIANTS.
That's sick. Know why? The Giants suck. And I am willing to bet my Eagles jersey collection (Jackson, McNabb, Spikes, T. O. [:(]) that we beat them.
And the Cowboys have a tough road ahead. Saints, Chargers, Redskins (oh, they're getting good NOW.), and then finale vs. Philly.
We have a true chance at the NFC East, my friends. A true chance.
Moving on, I'd like to talk about free agency/trades next year. Honestly, I don't know anything about our cap, and I don't really care that much for numbers about salaries. But there are two wide receivers I think have a good chance of landing in Philly.
Anquan Boldin - Boldin's been unhappy in Arizona recently, probably because Larry Fitzgerald took his spot as no. 1 receiver. Cardinals don't care, do they? They've got another amazing receiver. He goes by the name Steve Breaston. I can imagine a trade (after all, the Eagles were after Boldin) involving Reggie Brown (yes, seriously). Boldin and Jeremy Maclin/DeSean Jackson, with Maclin/Jackson in the slot, Avant as a reliable fourth receiver. :)
Terrell Owens - Don't kill me for this. I mean it. He may come back to Philly. He was a model citizen this year in Buffalo. I think he might come back, apologize to McNabb, and understand that with good receivers lining up across from him (Jackson, Maclin, Avant), this team could easily make it to the Super Bowl. It could happen.
Onto a Vick trade. Everyone wants to get rid of him. There are actually a lot of possible destinations that he could be headed towards.
Buffalo, Cleveland, Houston, Oakland, Washington, Chicago, Detroit, Carolina, Tampa Bay, St. Louis, San Francisco.
I can't name everyone we could trade him for on these teams, but I honestly have a question. Who do you (all us Eagles fans) think we should trade him to, and for what?
What Our Game Against the 'Skins Showed
1. Asante Samuel is still out there. When was the last time he had a pick? I still wish we had Lito Sheppard. Think of how great a secondary that would be; Samuel, Sheldon Brown, Sheppard, Ellis Hobbs, and Joselio Hanson.
2. Our LBs are horrible at defending tight ends. Look what Fred Davis did on that (admittedly) magnificent catch-and-run. He also caught a TD pass. Every one of our next opponents, save for possibly the Denver Broncos (I don't know if Daniel Graham counts...) have a stellar tight end. Tony Gonzalez, Kevin Boss, Vernon Davis, Jason Witten? They're pretty good.
3. Jackson can exploit the best of secondaries for that big play. When the two teams first played on MNF, people said that DeSean Jackson's long TD catch (not to be confused with his endaround) was just a fluke against a defense starting DeAngelo Hall, Fred Smoot, and Carlos Rogers (as well as Brian Westbrook's little brother, Byron). I don't think it's a fluke anymore. Number 10 burnt them for his shortest touchdown of the year, 35 yards. Put that in perspective; both Torry Holt and Dwayne Bowe's longest TD catches have been for 41 yards.
4. We need to stop committing penalties. We had much too many, enough said. Actually, no. At least we didn't pull off a Shaun Rogers and horse collar Jason Campbell.
5. Vick needs some new ways to get on the field. Vick had another useless game today. Come on, Marty! Line up Vick as a wideout! Or a running back! Add some passing plays for him! Endaround passes! Lateral Passes! Fake Runs! ANYTHING!
Right now, I don't think there's any chance of getting to the Super Bowl. Not to be pessimistic. I hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. NFC Championship Game is a possibility. We should get hot in December, and we'll see where it goes.
(Please let Favre and the Vikings lose in the playoffs).
Oh, and as far as I see it, the Giants are out of the playoff hunt right now.
The Way I See It:
Either the Cowboys or Eagles will win the NFC East. If the Eagles win it, the Cowboys will get seed number 5. If the Cowboys win it, the Eagles get seed number 6.
Favre and the Vikings have pretty much locked up the NFC North. The Saints have done the same in the South. And the Cardinals should win the NFC West, barring an unimaginable run by the 49ers or Seahawks, and an injury to Leinart, as well as another concussion to Warner.
The Packers should win a wild card spot, as their 7-4 record indicates.
I think the Falcons won't get a wild card, because of Matt Ryan's injury.
As for the Giants? When Plaxico Burress shot himself in the leg, I think the Giants focused too much on the wideout problem. Now they've got great seasons out of Mario Manningham and the other Steve Smith, but the rest of the team isn't playing well.
Another playoff season looks to be in the making.
Go Eagles.
All Things Eagle: You're A Good Man, Reggie Brown
“And McNabb’s going to throw it, off the hands of his receiver, INTERCEPTED! Rodney Harrison! And the Patriots are going to win Super Bowl 39! A shocking defeat for the Eagles!”
It feels horrible to come so close and lose again, doesn’t it?
Living in Boston, as a Red Sox fan, I know all about the agony we faced before 2004. But if there’s one thing that the Eagles have been this decade, it’s the NFC’s best team.
Don’t believe me? 2001 NFC Championship Game; Rams vs. Eagles. The Rams would win, but they haven’t appeared in the NFC Championship Game again. 2002. The Buccaneers beat us in the NFC Championship Game. The Bucs haven’t been there since ‘02. The Panthers beat us in ’03, and while they did end up going to the NFC Championship Game in ’05, they haven’t been all that consistent. ’04, Falcons lose to us, so that doesn’t matter. Anyways, the point I’m trying to drive home is that the Eagles have been in the NFC Championship Game 5 times (albeit being 1-4 in it) and the closest to that during the span of this decade is 2, by the Panthers and Giants.
One guy who helped us reach that elite status was Jeremiah Trotter. Truth be told, that guy was amazing. He provided almost as much energy on field as Brian Dawkins. And when I heard that amidst the injuries to Stewart Bradley and Omar Gaither, Trotter was signed, I probably floated a couple feet in the air.
But where is he? Shouldn’t he be starting? I’d rather have him start than Joe Mays any day. The Eagles need to work this guy in. I want to see Sean McDermott go with a 3-4 for a couple plays to throw off the other team.
Then again, there are a lot of things I want to see. Like Reggie Brown going for 1,000 yards. Leonard Weaver getting 15 carries a game. Andy Reid playing instead of Mike Patterson. Michael Vick getting more throws. (You need to prove that Vick can throw before you put him in the ‘Wildcat’, otherwise teams should just blitz and pick up Vick’s run.)
In any case, when I was watching the Eagles-Bears game, I had my eye on Reggie Brown during his special teams duty. How does a guy fall so hard? Whenever I boot up my Madden ’08 disk, he’s the Eagles 2nd WR. Brown has talent, but maybe, like Brandon Gibson, Philly isn’t the place to harvest this talent. (*cough* Maybe trade Brown and a draft pick to the Raiders for Kirk Morrison?)
Leonard Weaver also should have had a bigger role Sunday Night, when Brian Westbrook was out. LeSean McCoy ran nice, but Weaver should get some runs out of the I-Formation. Or some Weaver fakes to McCoy. Either way, McCoy’s subbing for Westbrook well, except for the fact that Westbrook is a little speedier and better with catching passes and taking them pretty damn far.
It was awesome to see Michael Vick actually do something for the Eagles. I’m still waiting for the late flea-flicker where they toss it to McCoy, who starts to run, but laterals it back to Vick, who unleashes the ball deep for DeSean Jackson. Someday.
Hopefully we stand up against the Redskins. They were pretty bad against Dallas, so take that into consideration. If we stop Rock Cartwright (Who? I only know Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts.) and force the 'Skins to pass, we should win it.
Happy Thanksgiving. Go Eagles.
PS: Thanks a lot for pulling down Devin Hester’s pants, Dimitri Patterson. I really needed to see that.
