With 2 days to go for the launch of the Longhorn Network, I thought I would look up who was carrying it. Jokes on me, you, Austinites, Texans, sport fans, the NCAA, the Texas Aggies, the BIg 12 and everyone else.

According to the Longhorn network web site, no big pay services are carrying it. Like a tree falling in an empty forest, is it a network if no one can watch it?

The web site has a schedule of shows, for what purpose? no one can watch them. Maybe this is some e-mail scam,

Please MR X our Broadcasting license are being held up by the Nigerian sports federation if you could just send us 5000 dollars US we could purchase licenses to put our network on the TV, we would then make mounds of cash on advertisements with which we can repay you a hundred fold.

Maybe it's some kind of Bernie Madoff type Ponzi Scheme. Put in $10,000 and we will pay you $100,000* in one Year.

Then it could always be the faithful drug money laundering operations for a world wide drug cartel.

The one good thing is the launch is so big it  covers the entire US, you will not be able to watch the Longhorn Network any where or at any time you want.

It's not just the UCLA game but so far this team has spent this year making bad plays, mistakes and penalties at a rate that seems higher than any other Mack Brown Team. This begs the question, if Texas is such a power house in recruiting where is the talent?.

There are no running backs that with above average talent, the offensive line doesn't seem to be able to run block and the receivers keep dropping easy passes. With all that recruiting power didn't they get one good back, one good lineman to run behind or a good receiver that can catch?

There are many passable players on the team but where are the great players? Where have the great backs been for the last 2-3 years? Can you see any of the present offensive starters getting to the NFL?

After UCLA we might start to see that the defense is not much better.

The way Texas is playing in conference so far I might have seen the Big12 1st and 2nd team go at it last night between Kansas and Baylor. Balyor stayed close to Kansas  at Kansas, until fouls, turnovers and the general all around excellence of Kansas finally turned the tide. Baylor just couldn't keep up in the last few minutes.

Baylor was impressive, this was on the road at Kansas. Baylor shot 52% over all and 47% from three point range they had 8 more rebounds and 7 more blocks than Kansas and still didn't get the win. Baylor threw up some desperation 3's at the end of the game, during most of the game they were shooting above 50% from three point range. Kansas did a decent job on defense but Baylor has a knack for getting the slightest space needed to get off a good shot. 

What did Baylor in was 21 fouls and 20 turnovers. Kansas won by three possessions and had only 7 turnovers with a difference of 13 turnovers that would be enough to gives Kansas ample chances to keep the lead.

....as their alter ego Gardner-Webb Running Bulldogs. One thing you can say and maybe the only thing worth saying is those bulldogs don't mind getting beat. They do have the courage to get beat by some of the best. They have played NC and Duke and lost. A more impressive loss to #100 (kenpom) Penn St. by 47.

The only real questions is how bad will the beat down be and what do these fellas get paid to wander the country  taking embarrassing ass whoopings.

What might be interesting is the after game interview , "Coach Scruggs, what do you think the college experience is like for your young men when you parade them around the country as punching bags so your school and program can raise some money at their expense?"

Texas Woman's Volleyball team is playing for the National Championship Saturday at 7:pm on ESPN.

They are underdogs to Penn state who have won 101straight games, They haven't lost since 2007. This is one of the greatest records in college sports.

THIS IS TITANIC GAME.

UT is 29-1 and will  try to stop Penn State which has  the longest winning streak in college sports history.

This could be one of the greatest moments in Texas sports history.

We are starting to see stats bandied around about the Texas Alabama game. In the next month I imagine we will see as blizzard of them.
I really like the approach Basketball stats have taken. I wondered about football. So I Started at the very beginning, what did I want to know? Who will win the game. The numbers that correlate best with who wins and who loses is the score. Scoring most often occurs when a team is on offense, so I wanted to look a the rate of scoring per possession.
Looked at both team's records. I looked at the numbers of Possessions and the number of points scored. In the case of Alabama I took the number of points (less any defensive scores)and divided it by the number of possessions in each game. I averaged that number for all 13 games. Then did the same for Texas. I also found out the average number of possessions per game for each team. I did the same things for each teams opponents.

Alabama

points per possession 2.41*

Texas

What I did next was take the average number of possession Alabama gave up and averaged them with the number of possessions Texas gets per game.
I did the same for Texas -Alabama.
This should give a number of possessions that each team should get for the Texas Alabama game .

Texas has      12.85 possessions
Alabama has 13.1 possessions

Then multiplied it by the points per possession each team averaged.

Texas        12.85 x 2.57 = 33.02 points
Alabama  13.10 x 2.41 = 31.57 points

*the number of scores made by the defense or on punt and kick returns was subtracted from the totals points

Texas scored          11 Td's on int's, punk returns and kickoffs.
Alabama scored     3 Td's on int's, punk returns and kickoffs.

Texas added        5.92 points per game, on defense
Alabama added   1.6 points per game on defense

Alabama 33.17          3 Td's and 4 field goals 7 scoring drives.
Texas       38.94         5 Td's and 1 field goal 5 scoring drives 1 defensive TD

           I'm sure a lot of us watched at least 2 games on Saturday. Horns vs Nebraska and Florida vs Alabama. In those games whose style  play dominated the game? The Alabama/Florida game, Alabama used a ball control offense and it strong defense to limit the Florida offense from being on the field enough to smoothly execute it's offense. In this way  Alabama forced Florida to play a game that favored Florida's weaknesses.

           The Texas - Nebraska game was similar in this way. Nebraska's defense dictated the flow  of the game by forcing the Texas offense into game situations that favor the strengths of the Nebraska defense and are weaknesses for the Texas offense.

           Contrary to most posts, I don't blame the Texas offensive line for the offesive  problems. What I was appalled at was the offensive coaches for Texas were consistently putting their team in positions where they were bound to fail based on the play of the Nebraska defense and through out the game lacked the understanding on how to break up that pattern. One good thing is as opposed to the Alabama-Florida game where Alabama offensive control of the ball facilitated the Alabama defense to control the Florida offense, Nebraska's total domination of the Texas offense had little impact on how the Texas defense played. As much as Nebraska's defense had the Texas offenses number the Texas defense did not let that effect their executing their defense and completely shutting down the paltry Nebraska offense.

           In the case of the Texas-Nebraska game only one part of the game was a failure, the Texas offense vs the Nebraska defense. Was the failure because the Nebraska defensive players were bigger, stronger, smarter, better trained the than the Texas offense? I doubt that. The difference was the Nebraska had a better plan on how to use the resources they had to not let the Texas offense carry out their plan. You have to expect that every once and a while the other guy is going to look at all the tape of all the games, especially towards the end of the year and come up with a plan that uses his players strengths to render your plan unusable. Then what?

  That is the place the Texas Offense was stuck the entire game, then what? Many the normal things the Texas offense does to execute an a consistent drive down the field to score were disrupted. In any game you have a certain amount of offensive possessions to score with. A defense wants to do things that put the offense in the position that breaks up that consistency. It's harder to keep a drive going if the team constantly has to make first downs with 3rd down and long yards for the first. The more 3rd and longs during a drive the greater the chance of not making a first. So a defense wants to disrupt the consistency of offensive play. This is what Nebraska did so well.

           As an offensive coach you have to expect this is what you are going to face. It the case of Texas it seemed Nebraska did quite a few things that OU did to break up the consistency. What is shocking to me was the coaching staff's utter inability to recognize that problem and find a solution for it.

           So much of the Texas offense depends on reading the defense that one very easy way to disrupt it is just change the looks enough to add uncertainly to the reads. Since the offense is reading aka reacting to the defensive formation it neutralizes some of the inherent advantage the offense has in knowing when the play starts and where it is going. As a defensive coordinator all you need to do is study which plays an offensive can consistently execute and at the appropriate down and distance insert a formation that looks like it will counter the types of plays the offense tends to use successfully at that down and distance. A offense that reads the defensive formation will see that they will counter their play will change to a play that may be less successful for those circumstances . On a long drive of a dozen plus plays it only needs to be successful a few times.

           What was so effective about the Nebraska defense is they did that every 2nd or 3rd down so that Texas's possession only lasted one or two sets of downs. They did that by controlling the line of scrimmage.  Texas rushed for 38 times for 18 yards. McCoy rushed 17 times for -20 yards on top of that he was sacked 9 times and lost 52 yards. So 26 plays went for -72 yards because of the defensive line play. Texas only ran 74 plays the majority of the 1/3 that McCoy had the ball were loses. That amount of disruption by the defensive line effected McCoy on the plays when the offensive line did do it's job. Most of those time the defense dropped back 7-8 and even with 4 receivers the odds are not good to complete a pass.  The hard part to understand is how the offensive play calling ceded the advantage so willing. Texas never adapted what it was doing to try to disrupt what the Nebraska defense was doing. A big advantage that the offense has is since it knows when the plays starts and where it is going the offensive player will waste slightly less energy to execute. You see this is ball control games, the defense tires at a slightly faster rate than the offense. One way that to slow down a rush is to tire out rushers by speeding up the game. We didn't really see that more than once or twice half heartedly by the Texas offense but something else it would have done is not allow Nebraska the luxury of setting up comfortably the type of formations they wanted. If the Nebraska defense was rushed, chances are they would have made more mistakes. There is synergy to this also, if you make the defense chase say on a roll out then on the next play the offense gets back to the line and starts the next play as fast as possible. Do this enough and the defense cracks. As far as I could tell Texas played a slow and deliberate game, that was exactly the type of game Nebraska was going to be good at.

            All year we have seen one style of running game from Texas, the running back gets the ball and runs behind blockers waiting for a hole. Lots and lots of pulling of slow, fat linemen (No disrespect to the linemen that's what they should be) with some incredibly  fast running backs slowed down waiting for a hole. In this scenario a mediocre linebacker is going to be as fast as the best tackle, guard or center and he is not going to be behind the play. On some plays a fast defensive end or outside linebacker is going to run down the plays from behind because the offensive line are going to be the slowest men on the field. By running to one side or the other,the offense can gain an advantage, they can get numerical superiority, 6 blockers on 5 defenders. Most of Texas run plays are so slow the defense has time to catch up and they never have that advantage. In effect all that has happened is the line of scrimmage is shifted to the right or left half a dozen yards. This happened with Nebraska, the Texas run plays only work if every offensive lineman gets a good blocks since they get no numerical advantage . If 1 or 2 line fail to get good blocks the play fails. Nebraska had defensive linemen good enough to fight off blocks and since the plays are so slow it makes no difference where on the field they are, the defense always catches up. What is the use of having speedy running backs if they are forced to follow the slowest men on the field? You are giving up a big advantage! Against a team like Nebraska or Alabama you need fast backs running fast plays to give them a chance use their speed out run the ends and linebackers, and the defense then has to rely on the cornerbacks to make the play. Odds are they can't do it consistently. If you run your plays at the speed of offensive line you are not going to tire out the defense but make them chase some really fast running backs they are going to get gassed and will need to substitute more. In that case the defense plays with less competent players more often and if you speed up the game they won't be able to get subs in and set the correct defense. All advantages to the offense.

           The Texas pass attack was and is pretty predictable. Is any wonder Nebraska figured out how to stop it? Of course Nebraska has two really excellent pass rushers in Suh and Crick but it helped that Texas is not very audacious. If like Nebraska you can get good pressure with just intelligent use of your front 4 then you drop 7 in to coverage. Texas  did Nebraska a favor by running all these shorten up patterns because of the rush and 7 men in the secondary they could pretty much blanket the first 20 yards. No amount of complicated crossing patterns is really going to change that. A lot of damage Nebraska did was in the first 3 seconds. Pack the zones in the first 20 yards means nobody is open, means Colt holds the ball, giving the rush more time. The whole game McCoy had a hard time finding an open receiver. When it 7-8 on 3-4 it going to be hard to find anyone open no matter what the patterns are. Nebraska packed the short and medium zones hoping that the rush cut down on the time Colt had to hold the ball. There was a easy answer to break the back of Nebraska. Put the real burners like Goodwin on the out sides send then deep, McCoy pumps short and goes long hanging the ball up. They tried it once and Kirkendoll dropped a sure TD. Looking at the stats there wasn't any other passes longer than 15 yards. If you send to outside receivers deep it going to take at least three of the secondary with them then you leave 3-4 to cover the same 20 yards much harder to do considering 1-2 of those are linebackers. One other part of this puzzle is that receivers are not consistent blockers, Why bother? send them deep and have them take at least 1 or maybe 2 defenders away from the play, if the defenders stay then you have 1 on 1  or even better none on 1 deep, and a good chance to score.

           What astonishes me is that Texas never really threw deep till the fourth quarter and it would have worked if the ball wasn't dropped. They should have put the test to the Nebraska secondary on the second drive. Even if it doesn't work Nebraska would have to respect deep throws since they don't have an offense to respond in kind. The game would have been over in the first half if Texas had thrown long 4-5 times, 1-2 of those would have connected just by the fact that Texas receivers are faster than Nebraska's secondary and they were also packing the line and were suckers for the pump to the short routes. It would have made the Huskers more cautious and have to play from behind which would have made them desperate seeing how badly the Texas defense dominated their offense.

           Speed the game up and throw deep, that's all Texas needed to do break down the Nebraska defense. The good thing is it's pretty much all they have to do to Alabama to win. Slow methodical teams will only win slow methodical games. Texas can play that way but Alabama is defiantly better at it and would beat Texas if they play that way. Florida was forced to and they got beat. So what if Ingram get 175 yards, If Texas throws deep early and gets 300-350 yards in the air, it's 4-5 TD will beat Alabama's 2 TD's and 4 field goals. It is this simple; Texas wins a horse race, Alabama wins a tractor pull. 

Looking at the secondary of the Horns led me to look at the passing quality of the SEC compared to the BIG 12, which led to comparing the quality of the opponents of Texas Alabama and Florida. Each has played 8 games. So I looked at the NCAA rating (1-119) of each team they played for,  total offense, total defense, points allowed and points scored. Then took each of those ratings and averaged them for each team and got a single number for each team. Then I took the number of each team and averaged all eight of them  to get a rating of the competition each has faced. 

Florida had the worst rated competition at 60.9, Texas was second at 58.9 and Alabama was at 58.4. Pretty close.

So then I threw out the 4 worst teams each played. Then you got Florida with 45.8, Alabama at 40.0 and Texas at 33.6.

Neither Alabama or Florida played a Team that rated 33.6. The closest Florida came was Tennessee at 35. Alabama played Tennessee at 35 and Ole Miss at 33.8. Texas on the other hand beat OSU soundly even though it was rated 37.5 plus it beat Tech rated at 30.5 and the best team by far any of the three faced was Oklahoma at 17.3.

the big three ratings were,

Alabama 16.5

Florida  5.7

Texas 11.5

The top 4 defensive teams average that each three faced (combining Points allowed and Total defense).

Florida 19.3

Texas 18.9

Alabama 10.6

If you take the total offense and the total defense average of all eight opponents for each three you get,

Florida 59.8

Alabama 61.1

Texas 59.3

based on just those 2 categories it is really close again.

Based on the 4 categories Texas has played the best individual teams, Alabama has played the best set of eight teams average and Florida played the worst which may have to do with it's advantage being rated slightly higher than the other 2.

One note Florida did play one div-II team which means there rankings should be lower due to the fact that Charleston Southern is rated 44th in total offense, 80th in total defense, 78th in points scored and 105th in points allowed in Div-II so might assume to add 119 to each number if all Div I teams are better than all Div II teams.

I started noticing during the Missouri game that the coverage sets for the secondary had the conerbacks and safeties move closer to the line of scrimmage.

During the OSU game the majority of the coverage sets had the secondary  close to the line of scrimmage.

There were some posts mentioning about the defense giving up to much yardage due to the pre-snap depth of the secondary. I was wondering if the tighter coverage of the last 2 games had any effect.

Comparing the first 4 games to the last 4 games.

The Horns defense did better in the last 2 games stopping the pass against decent conference opponents than it did against the non conference cream puffs (excluding Tech).

I was looking at some stats and started experimenting. 

OSU was only better in 2 game deciding categories in my mind, Sacks allowed and Passing Efficiency.

Rushing Offense,

OSU was better at rushing the ball but only 11.6% better than UT and UT was a twice as good at stopping the rush than OSU (UT was #1 in the nation at stopping the run, leading by 50% over the #2 spot). Because of this I would give the advantage to UT.

Tech certainly gave good shlacking to Okie st.. The cowboys couldn't stop the Techie Offense. Every drive was a TD and two went over 95 yards. 

This makes me feel better how much tighter the Horns played Tech, after spotting them one half of crap, the Horns clawed their way back and were as close as you can get but not win.

But even though tech has a much better team than they have during the past they still got those same old sissy spakley helmets. Does anyone else think they look like they were designed for the nieghborhood bowling league? maybe disco rollerskating protection or a Liberace Las Vegas extravaganza? Pirates might go for the black uniforms and some want to be praire pirates might wear black and red but playing football with a disco ball helmet is going to get you about as much respect as having Richard Simmons as a strength coach.

watching Tech shred KU it looks like they are gonna be unbeaten going into next week.

Okie st is unbeaten going into today's game. So the question in my mind is what are the stats on playing unbeaten teams in a season.

The Horns will have three this year how many others teams have played that many?

(on top of that they are all conference games).

Another thing to remember the Horns have one more game against the best of the Big XII but

Oklahoma still has Tech and Okie St..

Tech has the Horns, Okie St. and Oklahoma.

Okie St. still has to get by Tech and Oklahoma.

The Horns have made at least a one loss out of our  biggest rivals in the conference. So our biggest rivals have at least 2 more games against the best teams in the conference.

when I went to look at the Coaches poll I noticed Texas didn't get all the number one votes. that seemed odd to me, first as an underdog they beat the #1 team and then did what not many teams have done this year and proved they deserved being ranked #1 by beating a top ten team this week. Not only beat them but played almost 1 perfect half of football. Scored on every drive, stopped their opponent from scoring on every drive but one where they got a field goal. Didn't have a turnover and only 1 penalty in the half.I don't remember any team playing so flawlessly.  This was against a team that never had to punt the ball until the 5th game of the season and was a top pick to get to the championship game and not some talentless cream puff.

I though maybe I should look at the schedules of the other two teams that got #1 votes maybe that was why they got the vote.

Texas the consolidated win loss record of the teams it played was  27-22 and it scored 337 points to 123

Alabama played against teams with a win-loss record of 24-25 and it scored 226-101

and Penn St. (what a joke it's the big X) it opponents were 22-35 but of course it beat them 363-94

Both Alabama and Penn St. played only 2 teams with winning records and 5 teams with losing records.

Texas had played 4 teams with winning records and 3 teams with losing records.

Texas has played twice as many teams winning teams as Alabama and still scored more than 100 more points than they have.

The quality of the Big XII is still underrated and the bowl season is sure going to be a shock to some writers.

The Longhorns are tied for first place in sacks with 14 and losses of 144 yards.

Brian Orakpo is 2nd in country in sacks.

It been a while since the defence had a pass rush. Also 2nd in the country in stopping the run 52.5 ypg.  not given up a rushing td yet ( only 3 passing) not bad.

On top of that CM is 2nd in the country in passing efficicency.

Points given up so far;

Oklahoma 38 points, 9.5 ppg

Missouri 34 points, 8.5 ppg

Texas 33 points, 8.25 ppg

If it is not amazing enough to have 3 QB's at 2,3,and 4 you look down the list at 8,9,and 10 you have,

Zac Robinson, OK state at, 179,

Robert Griffin, Baylor, at 171,

Josh Freeman, K state, at 170,

With this as evidence I would say  the Big VII is now the Dominate passing Conference in the country.

Did Michigan get a lesson?   What about Texas?
Is barely beating a patsy that you are suppose to beat by 30-40 points any worse than losing to an Ohio St.?

Of course in matters in the win/loss sense but it could be an important factor when comparing teams with even records and relative positions for bowl bids.

Most top level teams did exactly what was expected to there patsies, beat them to a pulp.

I give a lot of credit to Oklahoma St. and Kansas St. for aiming high and taking a chance. If I was say an AP voter I would definitely take it into account when considering team with equivalent records.  

So towards the end of the season when there is a traffic jam at 8-2 or 9-1, what will the Texas win look like?  

I having a hard time figuring out why an intro is required for every diary? What if you don't need an intro, can you skip it? And why it needs to be 300 characters?  am at 300 characters yet?

The 2nd thing I thought after seeing KD twist his ankle is he off to the NBA.

With all the talk comparing Kevin Durant to other players something is being missed. About his play, how Texas uses him and his chances of staying at UT more than one year.

Of the comparisons none have seemed very accurate. His comparisons to other players is not just an intellectual question but does throw some light on his tenure at UT and expectations for the NBA.
After seeing a good season of play there really is no good comparison of Kevin Durant's skill set but his on court play is much like that of Magic Johnson's and his career at Michigan.  

The similarity stems from both of KD and MJ's  ability to play anywhere on the court at any position. Which comes to KD's tenure at UT. Coach Barnes has let Durant play offense and defense anywhere on the court. If Durant comes back to UT he may continue to get then same chance to learn various positions and not get pigeon holed. This freedom will allow KD to learn and expand his skill set and become a player very much more like Magic. What Durant hasn't learned yet is apparent, this is especially true when his is in the back court. Magic was a 6'9" point guard but he had to play bent over to shorten up his dribble to make less vulnerable to steals and this lesson has not been learned by Durant. He high dribbles into traffic and he loses the ball.

If Kevin Durant does leave after this season his freedom to play and learn the other positions will be over. Which ever NBA team takes him will try to plug him into a fairly ridged style of play where positions and who plays them is pretty well defined.

What this comes down to is there is a good chance if he stays that he gets the freedom to learn and become a better all around basketball player and if he goes to the NBA he will lose the that freedom and play one position the rest of his career.    

The Longhorn slipped into 25 place in the AP poll this week since dropping out months ago. The long climb up is on. With two beatable opponents on this  this weeks schedule the horns can gain some valuable conference experience's before they try to take a bite out of one of the big dogs in the conference on national TV at Oklahoma State.
