Who was your favorite draft pick?

So its been 72 hours since the draft and you've had time to read about all the picks and reflect on what transpired. Personally, I played WR so I'm a little biased, so I always prayed the dolphins go after the best receiver available, but I'm not a fan of any of the WR picks. I really really loved Barden and wished the Giants hadnt stolen him from us. Once Britt, Robiskie and Nicks were off the board, I was praying that Barden would fall to us, and he almost did. I'm not convinced he would have been taken from Jeff Ireland's comments on miamidolphins.com but there was a chance. He fits the mold of what they were looking for.

That being said, I gotta say its a toss up between Sean Smith and Pat White, I think both were great picks, with Chris Clemons coming in 3rd place who I think may be a steal in the 5th round. He was the fastest safety at the combine, and its not like he's small either!

I think the edge's gotta go to Pat White though, just because of what I read recently about Parcells plans for the offense. I read that a source within ESPN said Parcells had plans of bringing the spread offense to the NFL back when he was working at ESPN, he had people breaking down tape of Arkansas for him a year while he was still working there. I have a weird feeling that they might really expand it this year, more than you might think. If not this year then maybe next when White is ready and they have enough pieces in place. Even the tackle they picked up late in round 6 supposedly was a guy who played in a system where they ran the unbalanced line, which is part of the wildcat formation. I love the thinking, makes it more exciting to watch, plus you gotta do something different these days in the NFL to get an edge (like stealing defensive signals cough belicheat cough), theres just too much parity.

Personally, I would be pissed if he went to the Patriots. Yes, we traded him away and he might have a grudge w/ new management, but I still don't think he should cross the line and play for the Pats. Then again, maybe I'm too old school and live in the past too much... I'm one of the few here who still hasn't fully embraced Pennington as a result.

Curran is willing to put more than a “maybe” on it. “With Mike Vrabel gone to Kansas City and the Pats having cap space from the Matt Cassel trade, Taylor can almost certainly expect a call from the 508 area code,” Curran concludes.

Dear Dolphans,

Take the following as my entry for the Chad Pennington (across enemy lines) Phinsider award. Those of you who have rose colored classes and do not want their buzz to be killed please do not read any further.

Do you REALLY want the Dolphins to win this game??? I want to present you the evidence as to why I don't think winning this game will be a positive for the long term success of this franchise.

Winning this game has the following consequences:

1) We will have won the AFC east which means next year we will be facing: Tennesse, Pittsburgh, San Deigo (probobly) on top of the AFC south/NFC south which is alot better than what we faced this year.

2) Chad Pennington will be the odds on favorite to keep his starting job next year which means another year of not seeing Chad Henne on the field

3) We will be HOSTING a playoff game against either Baltimore or New England who we've already been embrassed by this year at home.

4) We will fall about 6-7 spots in the draft next year.

Basically... we will celebrating all week just to have our hearts stomped on the following week. I dont care what any of you say, we will not beat either of those teams. We just don't have the depth at CB to handle the spread offense and we can't keep up offensively right now w/ Ginn & Bess at wideout. And Baltimore, well... you saw how that played out... we cant move the ball on them.

Everyone here is all over CP's nuts and it makes me sick. He's a Jet and always will be. I still cannot root for him. I'm sorry. Its how I feel. I said this from day one. Its a nice story that he's redeeming himself after being thrown away by the Jets but thats all it is...a redemption story. I wanted Chad Henne to play right away. I didnt care if it meant we were a 6-10 team. I wanted to see falshes of greatness ala Matt Ryan w/ the Falcons or Flacco w/ the Ravens. Look how bright their futures are. Do you really think CP can lead us to a SUPERBOWL??? Thats the bottom line here... obviously you all do...but I just don't see it. Even if he is good enough to lead us there... He's not a true Dolphin.. it wouldn't feel right. Maybe I'm spoiled from the Marino era but it just doesnt seem right.

Imagine if Henne developed over the course of the year like Ryan&Flacco and we had another draft under our belt next year, with a 3rd place schedule and a higher draft pick.... the superbowl is being hosted in Miami next year, and we would have HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE... isnt that alot better than praying that the former JET Chad Penningon will overcome all his shortcomings in talent and take us there????

As the title suggests.. this is just food for argument. I will obviously defer to my inner dolfan and root for them (as a team, not for CP) today, but it still wont feel right to me....

Bill Belichick druels over Dolphins film

http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_football_dolphins/2008/11/belichick-fears.html

All I can say is WOW. You guys should read this. You have to frontpage one of his quotes, there's a ton to choose from. Either he's sandbagging us with these high praises, or he really does respect our team. I'm going to lean to the latter, specifically because of comments directed at Dan Henning, someone who he's worked with personally while coaching with the Jets. This was my favorite part:

Q: Is it a drain on your time to prepare for [the wildcat offense]?

BB: Well, that is their whole offense, it’s like – Is empty [backfield] a drain on your time? Is three wide receivers [a drain on your time]? Is unbalanced line? Is Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown in the backfield? Is lining up tight ends in the backfield? Is shifting? I mean, you have to defend everything. So, you work on what they have done, you work on what you think they might do but the fact of the matter is that [Dan] Henning is down there drawing up stuff today that he probably didn’t know was in the game plan yesterday. So, what that will be we won’t know until Sunday but that is what he has always done. That is his offense. That was the way it was when we played him at Carolina [and] that is the way it is now. That is the way it was when we were together at the Jets. That is the way it was when he was the head coach at Atlanta; that is what they do.

Like many of you, I'm anticipating Quinn's debut this Thursday against Denver. It will be interesting to see how he pans out. The knock on him was that he just wasnt accurate enough for CamCam n his QB coach that worked him out for a month before the draft. We see has happened to Beck and Ginn so far, so here's hoping that Quinn is a bust too....

Btw when asked what group he's most surprised with. Tony Sparano said in his press conference today, "No offense to my wide receivers, I love them all, but none of them are stars." That should say enough about what they thought about Ginn.

excerpts of questions relevant to us..

(On what rivalry in the NFC North can he compare the Dolphins- Jets rivalry and why) – "I sort of got that question just now and my response was, 'Every game I've ever played in has been a rivalry.' Of course playing the Bears, the Vikings and Lions, it just kind sort of comes and goes in spurts. It kind of just, it seems like the Vikings rivalry heated up a little bit as years progressed and we struggled to beat those guys over there. When I think of this rivalry here, I think of (Ken) O'Brien and (Dan) Marino going toe-to-toe all of the time and just putting up astronomical numbers. I'm excited to be a part of it to be totally honest with you. I hope it's as exciting as it has been in the past, just like the rivalries that I've been a part of in the NFC North. I don't know if I can compare it to anything; I'll have to play in this game first to give you that answer and maybe I still don't. Once again I'm just excited about the opportunity."

(On his take on all of the storylines in the opening game) – "It probably is carrying a little more attention than it would've gotten otherwise. Is that good or bad? I consider it good, because we as players, I would hope everyone of the guys in this locker room, or in that locker room, want attention good or bad. It gives you an opportunity to shine on a big stage which you get anyway, but this one kind of brings a little more attention to it. You do have to block it out. I've been fortunate throughout my career that I've been able to put that stuff aside. I don't know if it's amusing or what; it is what it is. There's a lot of reasons to want to watch this game. But once the first kickoff takes place it's all about football and that's going to be the case all year long."

(On what concerns him most about the Miami defense) – "They're physical, they're tough, they don't disguise a lot, but that's their plan. They just come right at you. If we don't match their physical style of playing we're going to be in trouble. It's all about just knocking you in the mouth. They're pretty stout up front and pretty savvy at linebacker and we have to be able to handle that."

I especially like this last question. I think that he's spot on with his anaylsis. They made the defense simpler this year for the team so they're not ganna do a whole lot of fancy stuff. Its the same defense that Dallas ran last year, and Favre struggled against it going 5/18 for 2INTs so hopefully we can repeat those results.
