A look at the Chargers in the AJ Smith Era

Just how good have the Chargers been in the AJ Smith era? We break down the numbers.

Orlando Hudson is a Padre

The best possible 2B we could have gotten, and it's for 2 years, $11.5m. Once the Bartlett trade goes through, that should take care of the middle infield.

NYT The Fifth Down

+

"The Chargers have already used 63 different players this season, an incredibly high number for half a season. That’s what happens when you let important starters hold out until the leaves turn, suffer a rash of injuries, then cut the first wave of substitutes for making too many early-season mistakes. The second wave of unprepared fill-ins typically includes players who can’t block for punts and don’t realize that they can’t just leave the ball sitting in the middle of the field after a catch. If the Chargers resort to the third wave, you’ll see helmets on sideways and guys taking the field with lacrosse sticks. Pick: Titans."

Week 2 DVOA Stats and Analysis

Much was made, and rightly so, of the Football Outsiders' pre-season projections. As was debated thoroughly at the time, the Chargers did not rank highly in those pre-season projections. Now that...

FBO Walkthrough

The first part of this article talks about Chad Johnson and his cereal. The second part offers some very interesting study of the Chargers' offense on Monday Night. The long and short of it is that while they were able to move the ball well when it wasn't raining, once the Chiefs started scheming to take away Gates they had a hard time getting much of anything done, and showed how much they miss Jackson.

Jackson Trade Falls Apart

39

Bill Williamson at espn.com reports that Jackson and his agents were in fact able to come to terms on a contract with a new team, and one they had permission to talk to. However, the trade fell apart because that team and the Chargers were unable to come to terms on trade compensation. Re-commence to blaming AJ Smith.

Buy or Sell: Is there any question?

Myron basically says while the argument can be made to build for the future, and it's not crazy, he doesn't agree. "[A]dding a couple of legitimate players at the deadline will only increase the likelihood that [the Padres] will be playing post-season baseball this season, and if not, at least be in contention through September. It is not easy to build a .588 team with a good shot at the playoffs, so once it happens, even if by accident, it doesn’t usually make sense to disassemble it." He also echoes a point that Wonko made the other day, that while it may make sense to trade your star players for "can't miss" prospects, they aren't really "can't miss" and there's inherent risk in that course of action that isn't being acknowledged.

So the official word is Sean Gallagher will be DFA'd. I can't be sure but I bet someone claims him.

Statues in the Outfield

+

The Dodger outfield defense sucks. No, like really sucks. Andre Ethier may be outhitting the world, but because of his horrid defense he's only been worth 0.8 WAR. And that's without mentioning Manny and Kemp. Here's something amusing--the total value of the Dodgers' vaunted outfield has been 1.4 WAR--0.8 from Ethier, 1.1 from Manny, and -0.5 from Kemp. Adrian Gonzalez's total WAR: 3.2. Chase Headley's WAR: 1.2. Adrian and Chase alone have been worth more than three times the value of the entire Dodger outfield.

From our friends at Beyond the Box Score, this graph shows how many runs each team has contributed by their base-running. Sadly, our Padres have robbed themselves of 2 runs with their overall base-running.

Beyond the Boxscore's Week 9 Power Rankings have the Padres back at 4th overall, and best in the national league. The most interesting tidbit, to me, was the park-adjusted offense numbers. The Padres are suffering quite a bit from Petco-induced effects--after park adjustments are made, the Padres have a better offense than Colorado, Arizona, and San Francisco, and are only slightly worse than Los Angeles.
