Gonzaga vs West Virginia 2012-2013 season
I read that Few and Huggins have been talking about a home and home series starting next season in West Virginia. The story went as far as saying the Gonzaga game would be the first game of the season for West Virginia. Sounds like you guys even have a date in mind. If this happens Gonzaga and West Virginia could play twice in one season. ( Old Spice Classic ) Have any of you heard anything about this?
2012-2013 Schedule ( Updated )
I am really looking forward to next season. I really love our team. We are loaded 1-5 but i would still like to have a SF that can light it up from the 3 pt line.
I was trying to remember all the teams we will face next season, i think i have them all but let me know if i missed a few.
at WSU
at Oklahoma State
at Butler
Illinois at K2
Baylor at K2
EWU
West Virginia at Spokane Arena ( RMD game ) or K-2
Kansas State BIS
Old Spice Classic 3 games
Thats 11 games. We can book 3 more games for 2012-2013
Looks like a fun schedule for next season.
GJ Vilarino
It has been fun to see Grant Gibbs on TV a few times this season. He has done a nice job with a really good team this year. And that made me think about other former Zags. I did not get a chance to see Appalachian State ( because they are not on TV ) this year. But i wanted to see how he did this year at his new school. WOW i was surprised at the numbers for him.
Games played - 28
Games started - 7
PPG - 3.8
FG% - 34%
FT% - 58%
3 pt % - 20 %
I like GJ and i was thinking he would be a king at Appalachian State.
Anyone know why it is not working out for him there?
New 2013 Recruit
Kameron Rooks a 6'11 275 pound center has Gonzaga on his list of schools. He is the son of former Arizona Wildcats and NBA center Sean Rooks. Other schools he has listed, Arizona, Cal, Gonzaga, Oregon St, UC Irvine, Utah, UW and WSU. Only UC Irvine and Oregon St. have offered. This kid is still growing and might get to 7'1 or 7'2.
I think if we have a shot at him in 2013, maybe we dont need the 7 foot kid from Poland. But if not i would like the 7 footer from Poland. My only concern is if we get the Polish kid, we will have a log jam at the 4-5 positions. Dower, Harris, KO, Harris, Spangler and Karnowski. Has anyone heard about Rooks being on the Zags radar?
You can look up Kameron Rooks on Scout.com
Zags 2012-2013 Schedule
Well now that our season is over, i was thinking about next season. This young team will be a year older and i think the Zags will be a better team next year. I was trying to remember all of the OOC teams that we have for next season. So if you guys can help me fill in the blanks, that wouls be great.
Baylor - Spokane
Oklahoma St - road
Butler - road
WSU - road
EWU - Spokane Arena
Feel free to correct if any of these are wrong. And if you can think of more games that i missed, please post.
I know we have a tourney, but i forget if it is in Florida or Maui.
11:45 am tip off
I read on my phone that Syracuse and Kansas St will go first at 9:15 am PST and Gonzaga will follow at 11:45 am PST. Great game tonight and i hope we play the same on Saturday. Out of all the 2s in the tourney i am glad we play Ohio St. Charles Barkley picks Gonzaga to beat Ohio St. What 2 seed would you want to see the Zags play?
Go Zags!!
NIT Championship
Would you rather have the Zags go one and done in the NCAA tourney or go to the NIT and win the whole thing? I think i may be crazy but i would take the NIT championship because i would get to see more games. And a trip to New York is not a bad thing. But if we could win 1 game in the big dance i think i would pick the big dance. What would you pick?
One And Done?
Gonzaga heads to Pittsburgh to play West Virginia ( 75 miles away ) And i am not sure how many Zag fans will make the game. Even if we have 2,000 fans going to the game on Thursday, are they going to be the fans that make alot of noise or the fans that sit on their hands and stare at the court? For the first time i really dont know what to expect from our Zags. Every year i see us winning the 1st game and probably the 2nd game. I am curious to see how far you think we will go and why. And if we were to lose our 1st game would you rather go NIT and win the whole thing.
BYU Fans
I will say it again. You have this great site with fantastic writers and all BYU can come up with is 7 people to visit this site. I was thinking basketball was a big thing in Utah but i guess not. BYU will NOT win in Spokane and you will get the 3 or 4 seed in the WCC. Im sure at the start of the the year BYU fans were thinking they would run away in the crappy WCC. ( welcome to the WCC ) I am sure you wont be here for long anyway. To be honest i was glad when you joined the WCC and i still think you have a shot at the big dance but you will not beat the Zags in Spokane. You really do need to find a way to get fans to your great page here. Vanquish The Foe is a great news outlet for BYU sports.
Vanquish The Foe ( BYU )
If you get a chance go visit BYU's version of The Slipper Still Fits. It is called Vanquish the foe. They have really good writers that post something new every day about the WCC. I really like the the posts from the road when BYU plays WCC teams on the road. They are there and tell fans about the other fans and gyms. I like the fact that they did not much care for some of the places they had to visit in the MWC. And maybe some day we will have a link to their page since they are in the WCC now. IMO it is one of the best sites in the NCAA. You dont have to wait 6 days for the next post.
Gonzaga, BYU and Saint Mary's 3 way tie for title?
Now that i have had a chance to watch all the WCC teams this year, i am not too worried about 4-9 in the WCC. I dont see BYU or Saint Mary's losing to these teams. BYU will host Saint Mary's for round two before the Zags will get their 1st shot at BYU. Zags better hope BYU beats Saint Mary's. I see the Zags losing in Provo and beating BYU and Saint Mary's in Spokane. This could make it a 3 way tie for 1st with a 14-2 record. I am not sure what the tie breakers are in the WCC but it would suck to have a 3 way tie and get a 3 seed in Vegas.
Wed 8 vs 9
Thurs 5 vs 8/9
6 vs 7
Fri. 3 vs 6/7
4 vs 5/8/9
Sat. 1 vs 4/5/8/9
2 vs 3/6/7
Mon. Championship
Gonzaga vs U-Dub
Not sure about you guys but i miss the Washington bragging rights game. U-Dub Basketball has done very well the last few years in recruiting and you guys have a loaded team. I think it would be fun to see these two teams play again. I don't think playing all the games in Seattle is a good idea but it would be cool if we had 1 in Seattle Key Arena and 1 in Spokane arena. Plus we could also have a home and home on campus. I know most Husky fans don't like the idea of a Gonzaga vs UW in Spokane and i understand that. But just because you went 1-8 vs the Zags in a 9 year period does not mean you cant win some. You guys have a loaded team and for years to come. You guys are in the mighty Pac-12 and i think think you could add 1 more OOC game to the little school from the east side.
Khem Birch Not Coming To Spokane
Khem Birch is on his 3rd leg of the Khem Birch tour. He is visiting UNLV on Friday and spending the weekend in Las Vegas. He said he would make a decision on Saturday or Sunday. He did not mention if he planned to visit anyone else. But since he said he was staying in Vegas for the weekend and making his choice this weekend tells me he will be at UNLV for next season. I am glad this is over quickly and to be honest i dont know if he would have fit in with this team. This is a guy who wants to play the PF position and we have players better than him. As i stated before, Wiltjer would be on our bench too. So good luck to Khem and his new team. I would have loved to get him at Gonzaga because we would have a deep bench but i think he knew he was not going to get alot of minutes over guys like KO, Dower, Spangler and Harris.
Khem Birch World Tour
Khem Birch had a visit yesterday ( Jan 3 ) at Florida. Im sure he went to the game, Florida beat UAB 79-61. Today he went to visit New Mexico St. ( Jan 4 ) Next up is UNLV and if i had to guess that will take place on Friday ( Jan 6 ) Because UNLV plays at Cal St Bakersfield Thursday (Jan 5 )
So could we see Khem Birch in Spokane for the GU vs Santa Clara game on Saturday? I really think we may have a Birch sighting on Sat. He would then move on to his 5th team on his list. Oregon St will be his final visit. He said he plans to make a choice next week so he can enroll to his new school, so we wont have to wait long to find out where he lands. I think he would be a great add to the team IF we get him. But we will be fine if not. I still hold out hopes for the kid from Poland and from what i hear we will be the likely landing spot for him.
Khem Birch leaves Pitt
Khem Birch is leaving Pitt for personal reasons. Khem is from Montreal and was a prospect for Gonzaga ( i think ) Now that he has left Pitt at this time of the season could he be in a uniform for another NCAA team next year in mid December? I also thought i read last year that Khem and Pangos were friends. Could it be possible that Khem could be another North of the border recruit in the future? I'm sure Khem will be somewhere next season, why not Gonzaga? I hope Kevin Pangos has Khem on speed dial = )
New Members To Join WCC?
Now that the Big East has 5 new members, Boise St, SDSU, Houston, SMU and Central Florida. Boise St and SDSU are football only. Could they be looking for a new home for their other sports? I'm sure the MWC will kick them and they will need another place to compete. Could we have 2 new members joining the WCC? That would give us 11 teams and i would think we would need 1 more to join. Would Seattle or Denver be that team? Is this a crazy idea or does it make sense? What are your thoughts? Go Zags !!!
Minutes
I have been thinking long and hard this preseason on how this team will distribute the minutes this season for so many players. I was thinking the starting line up would be PG Stockton SG Bell SF Carter PF Harris C Sacre. I can see this team going 9-10 deep. So this is my best guess for the upcoming season.
Center
Sacre 30 min and Dower 10 min
PF
Harris 21 min Dower 10 min and Spangler 9 min
SF
Carter 8 min Harris 9 min Monninghoff 8 min and Landry ( when he gets back ) 15 min
SG
Bell 20 min and Carter 20 min
PG
Stockton 20 and Pangos 20
Total minutes
Sacre 30 Harris 30 Dower 20 Spangler 9 Carter 28 Monninghoff 8 Bell 20 Landry 15 Pangos 20 Stockton 20
I know i left out Keita and Hart but for the 1st 8 games they will see some playing time ( if Keita does not RS )
The Day After.......
Well it is Oct. 8th and Chris Reyes was going to visit Gonzaga Oct. 7th. Not a single word leading up to the visit ( other than 1 video and a mention he is coming for a visit ) No fanfare or red carpet treatment for this basketball player. To be honest i have no idea if the kid even showed up. I think the coaches see something in him, or they would not have had him come in for the visit. He also has an offer from an ACC school ( B.C ) and to be honest the video i saw looked good on this kid. I can't remember a player coming to visit with this liitle talk about an official visit. Maybe you are all right and this kid wont work out at Gonzaga. But this kid brought out the crickets..............
If anyone has any info on the visit please share. And i tried to find the link for his video ( that looked good BTW ) so if anyone has the link please post.
Hawaii vs Gonzaga
Hawaii and Gonzaga are going to hoop it up November 19 in Vancouver, BC Canada. And that makes 28 games for the regular season. This will be cool for our Canadian players. And this cant hurt our recruiting in Canada. Looks to be a great schedule for the 2011-2012 season and i predict a 23-5 record going into WCC tourney and 25-5 going to March Madness. Can't wait for the season to start.
New Recruit coming to visit
I think it would be cool for Gonzaga fans to share their thoughts on why Gonzga is such a great place to play. We have so many fans that come to The Slipper Still Fits, it would be cool to hear from the fans with 1st hand experience about Gonzga greatness. One thing that comes to mind for me is, that old Zags always come back to practice with young Zags. 12 NCAA dances in a row is not bad either. And my favorite is all the games played on ESPN.
Lets hear what you Zags fans have to say = )
Johnson, Karnowski and Wallace
I was thinking since Spencer has low interest in Gonzaga, maybe we take him OFF our board. And i was also thinking we have a recruit coming in mext month ( Demarquise Johnson ) we could show a little interest on this board and put a pic up like the other recruits we are going after. At least this guy is going to visit. And Tyrone Wallace would be a GREAT get for Gonzaga so i hope we can get this kid from So Cal and i would like to see more from him on this site. Prezmek Karnowski would also be a steal if he lands at Gonzaga next season, this guy has many awards as a Junior and joined Pangos as a 1st team tournament team member last season. If we could land even 1 of these guys i will be very happy. I really like what you guys do on this board so im just asking for more info on these 3 guys because it looks like our best chances are with them.
Questions for Max and the rest of our Gonzaga reporters.
i have a few things i would like to get answers to and i hope you or other fans can help.
1. David Stockton and Mike Hart got scholarships last season because we had open scholarships. This year we have one open and what will become of it?
2. Is Kelly Olynyk going to redshirt?
3. Rumor has it we have a new recruit coming but no name yet.
4. We all know GBJ, KD, RS, KP and the kid from G-Prep and the JC transfer are coming to Gonzaga. But could we now replace that with the 2012 class we are recruiting?
5. And if you can fill in the blanks on the schedule for the 2011-2012 season.
Western Michigan
Michigan St
Oklahoma St
Xavier
Notre Dame
Baylor
New Mexico
Butler
Illinois
WSU
Arizona
EWU
BYU x 2
Saint Marys x 2
San Diego x 2
Santa Clara x 2
Pepperdine x 2
LMU x 2
San Francisco x 2
Portland x 2
That is 28 games, so we are missing about 3-5 games
Thanks for what you do on this site, so if you have the answers that would be great.
2011-2012 Roster
I am thinking that Elias Harris may return to Gonzaga for his junior season. That made me start to think about what the roster would look like for the next season.
1. Elias Harris - Jr
2. Mangisto Arop - Jr
3. Marquise Carter - Sr
4. Sam Dower - So
5. Demetri Goodson - Sr
6. Mathis Keita - So
7. Mathis Monninghoff - So
8. Kelly Olynyk - Jr
9. Rob Sacre - Sr
10. Gary Bell Jr - Fr
11. Kyle Dranginis - Fr
12. Ryan Spangler - Fr
13. Kevin Pangos - Fr
14 David Stockton - So
15. Mike Hart - Jr
16. Chris Sarbaugh - Fr
It seems to me that getting PT at Gonzaga is going to be a long hard road. Your thoughts?
No more recruits
It seems to me that we wont get anymore verbals until May 2011. Im not sure about this but it stands to reason no H.S prospect will verbal to a school that has no scholarships to offer. And im sure that some H.S kid would feel uneasy about having a current player strpped of a scholarship to make room for them. And IF Harris stays for a 3rd season we have zero scholarships. I dont think ( nor do i want ) anyone is going to transfer. I really think these guys want to be a Zag and will settle for being roll players. I got an email from Kyle Wiltjer yesterday and this was what he told me. " The one thing i have noticed about GU is their fan support. I have had numerous e-mails from fans and people that go there. Right now i have not narrowed out any schools and GU is definetly one of my options that i consider. Thanks for the e-mail Kyle" This is a great kid and a great B-Ball player. He would fit in so well here with Gary Bell Jr. The one thing i will say about the Zags, is that they really find nice kids to come here.
Keep up te good work guys i really enjoy coming to this page and get my hoops fix. I do want to know if KO and Dower and gained any pounds. So if any of you have that answer please feel free to post. And it would make the next 6 months go by faster if we got ANY recruiting news. The only recruiting news i have, is that Gonzaga coaches were at Taft HS in California last month along with many Pac-10 coaches.
.
Gary Bell is at Gonzaga
Word on the street is that Gary Bell is at Gonzaga this weekend. If someone can confirm this that would be great. This is an unofficial visit. And i heard he will be back for a camp in the summer. So this sounds like good news. Maybe we do have a shot at Bell after all. I want this kid so bad. With 2 rides left maybe3 ( if Harris leaves for NBA ) I would like to land Bell . Wiltjer and Pangos. But we also need a center at some point and if someone bails and leaves Gonzaga we will have a 4th ride to hand out. I know we wont land LeBryan Nash but i have read that some Zags think his interest in Gonzaga was an error but it was not. He claims the Zags have offered him a ride. I was glad to hear the Zag coaches were seen in LA looking at some prospects at Taft HS with other Pac-10 coaches. I see Donny Daniels knows a little about LA HS kids = )
Stats
I was looking at some stats from last season from our PGs for next season. I realize that Carters stats are from a JUCO season but i wanted to include them.
Demetri Goodson 6.4 ppg 47% FG 56% FT 13% 3pt
GJ Vilarino 2.3 ppg 47% FG 63% FT 28 % 3pt
Marquise Carter ( JUCO STATS ) 17 ppg 43% FG 85% FT 38% 3pt and 5.5 APG
2010-2011 Zags
Next season the Zags will have one of the best Trios in the NCAA. Gray, Harris and Sacre can all avg. 17+ pts next season. So that covers the 2 SG 3 SF and 5 C. The big question is the 1 PG and 4 PF. I have said this all along, and i think Dower will be a beast. I also think he will be newcomer of the year in WCC. Sam can rebound and score, and he has had a full year to get ready for 2010. We are very lucky to have him and i think he will start at PF. Now for the PG. This will be a PG by commitee, I think GJ can be the guy. The sky is the limit for this guy. He can shoot the ball from outside and he can drive to the basket. He can make FTs and play D. If GJ plays his cards right he will be the starting PG next season. I also think Meech will get his minutes as well. If Meech can improve at the FT line and work on his outside shot he will get equal minutes with GJ. There will be times when Gray will play the point. As for the bench.... KO needs to add some pounds and hit the 3s i keep hearing about he was so good at in H.S. I know he can make monster dunks ( in practice ) I want KO to have an outside game like Daye and Calvary had. Kong got here late so i think he will improve. We know he can hit the 3 ball. And we saw flashes of going to the basket. Also Kong played D better that i thought he would. Gibbs came off from an injury , so i dont know if that had anything to do with his outside shooting. I heard Gibbs could shoot the lights out in HS. I hope he gets that back next season or he will be at the end of the bench. I love Gibbs and i hope he shines next season. Arop will be the first player off the bench for the Zags and bring an attitude that i hope spreads through the entire team. Arop can rebound with the best of them. He also has an outside shot that will only get better. Arop just has a nose for the ball and he will be a hard one to get off the court. I would like the insurance of a JUCO PG for this next season. I would not want to waste a season with the talent of the Trio Gray, Harris and Sacre. And not have a PG that can run the show. I said on another post that i think Sam Dower will be the wild card for this team and show the Zag Nation Dower Power. Do i think we get to the Sweet 16 in 2010-2011......We will if we have the ring leader ( PG ) to run the show. 9+ pts 4+ APG 38% 3pt and 70% FT. Then and only then can we talk bout Sweet 16 or better. We have the race car we just need the driver.
One and done
I'm not jumping off the bandwagon but after watching the Zags this last month i would be shocked if they win 1 game in the NCAA. This team is very young and now has lost their 6th man for the rest of the season. I think they will get a 7 seed. Will the real Matt Bouldin please stand up...Please stand up...And who was that guy in a Will Foster costume making 2 FTs?? Meech has NO outside game at all. Sacre can look like a superstar with his soft touch in the paint and his powerful dunks but most of the time he falls apart. Sacre will be a force in the future. Gray is a little stud that can sometimes be a dud. And we all know what Elias can do SOMETIMES. Kong may be our best 3 pt shooter but when he plays you never know what you will get, 12 pts or 0 pts. Each player on this team could have a night where they could have a 20 pt game. I dont hink i have seen a game all year where ALL the players were playing well. If we are to do anything in the NCAA this year we need a strong performance from Sacre 10+ pts and 8+ reb. Bouldin 16+ pts and 5+ apg. Gray 15+ pts. Harris 16+ pts and 6+ reb. And Meech no TOs and make some FTs. I really think next year will be even better.
Welcome to Gonzaga Kyle Wiltjer, Gary Bell Jr, Nick Johnson and LeBryan Nash.
Just in case these guys read this page i wanted them to hear a few reasons why they should choose Gonzaga.Come play for a coach who has the NCAAs highest active winning % And if you like to play in front of a large crowd, Gonzaga is the place for you. Gonzaga sells out EVERY game. And when we hit the road expect to see a full house, because when Gonzaga comes to town it is an event. And dont be surprised when on the road you find Zag fans in the crowd. AHHHH you like to be on TV???? We have our own broadcasting company called ESPN, im sure you have seen us on a few times. And when we are not on ESPN you will find us on Fox Sports, so tell your friends and parents to get Direct TV and they can watch every game you play. And if you like to win your conference every year we can help you with that, you see we own the WCC every year and that leads us to the NCAA tourney. We have been there the last 11 years with 5 Sweet 16s and 1 Elite 8. And im sure you are looking for a team that will be ranked every year in the top 10-15 and we will do that for you. Right now we are #9 and on our way to another dance with a 3 or 4 seed. You even get to practice with one of the greatest Basketball players ever......He goes by the name John Stockton. So if you guys do come to Gonzaga i promise you a Final Four. So we hope to see you soon when you visit and WELCOME to Gonzaga.
Another 2010 prospect is off the board....
I just read PG Jordin Mayes is going to Arizona and we already lost out on PGs Franklin and Dunsun. So where does Gonzaga look now? Do we give up on 2010? Maybe we could make another call to Germany and see if they have anymore players like Harris. The one good thing about the 2010-2011 season is that we will have some Dower Power. If any of you have any word on other recruits for 2010 please post.
