A NYTimes article discussing the unusual number of bad teams in the NFL this year (including the Bills of course). I thought this nugget was funny:

"The Bills asked the Jets not to transcribe their conference calls with New York-area reporters. Either the Bills do not want negative quotes taken out of context, or they do not want their futility on record. (The team did not respond to requests for comment.)"

"The footing and how you compete -- how you backpedal, how you turn and plant dry, cutting -- you have to work on those things because it's not easy. I thought it was really a good day for us."

Huh? Didn't the Bills specifically NOT practice in the cold and snow during the regular season in previous years? But rain is ok?

11 WR Michael Crabtree Texas Tech So. 6-3 214
Why this will be the pick: Imagine the dramatic overnight improvement of the Bills' Trent Edwards-led passing game if Crabtree were to join Terrell Owens, Lee Evans and a second-year James Hardy? With Owens signing just a one-year deal in Buffalo, taking a young receiver with Crabtree's potential is entirely defensible.
Why this doesn't make sense: This Bills coaching staff has to win now, and taking Crabtree might be more about 2010 and beyond than anything else. Buffalo is desperate for more pass rush, which points to Florida State's DE-OLB Everette Brown in this slot.

Look at the "game flow" chart on this ESPN link for the SU vs Uconn recap.

This game literally goes off the chart.

Buffalo Rumblings One more for news and notes

I thought Chuck Pollock, sports editor for the Olean Times Herald (whatever that is?) hits the nail on the head with this one, "It’s times Bills’ coaching staff got scrutinized". Read the whole thing but heres the last half of the piece:

Buffalo Rumblings Finish with the best record in the AFC East and still miss the play-offs?

Obviously we all want the Bills to start winning, and if we can win our next 4 including 2 against AFC East opponents we'll be right back in the playoff picture.  But if that happens and you predict all other  wins and loses simply based on current records alone, the AFC EAST is absolutely FUBAR .

Buffalo Rumblings This is not a mirage

Professional Tool Don Banks has this to say in his "Snap Judgments":

what's not to love about Bills' second-year starting quarterback Trent Edwards? He completed 80 percent of his passes at Jacksonville, going 20 of 25 for 239 yards and a 119.8 passer rating in Buffalo's 20-16 upset of the 0-2 Jaguars.

These Bills are for real, folks. This is not a mirage of a 2-0 start in western New York.

Buffalo Rumblings OT: Battle at Kruger

I'm going way off topic here, but I'm going temporally insane waiting for the next Bills game.  I thought it would be fun to find some sort of wild-life video about buffalo versus jaguars or some other big cat.

Then I remembered a youtube vid, the "Battle of Kruger" which is so awesome they made a National Geographic documetary based on this footage alone.  If you haven't seen it yet, its pretty cool; we're talking 36,687,965 views so far. Keep in mind its 8 minutes long, but if you get impatient, the action begins at the 1:58 mark.

And there's a great comeback win at the end.

Buffalo Rumblings Peter's and the Importance of Precedence

I started searching for "hold-out" "precedence" and "NFL" (google it yourself); and interesting article came up from the National Footbal Post (never heard of this site before).  In any case it discusses more of the business end of football and hold outs - nothing that common sense doesn't tell us - but I thought I'd share it anyway:

Precedence Important For Teams During NFL’s Crying Season

Buffalo Rumblings Buffalo and the Tampa 2: Divorcing?

Editor's Note (by Brian Galliford): This excellent FanPost by Zumone is the perfect Saturday topic of conversation in these parts.  With the large defensive additions we've brought in (linked below), is Buffalo beginning to move away from the Tampa 2 scheme brought in by Dick Jauron?  Z, by way of hoosierteacher of Mile High Report, begins the investigation.  End Note

Given the recent discussions of the Buffalo Bills' defensive upgrades this off-season, I began wondering about our defense and how our current personnel fits the Tampa 2.  However, I'll be the first to admit ignorance on defensive schemes; I kind of know what the Tampa 2 is but if you pinned me down and really asked me to define it, well, I'd be hard-press in all honesty.  Looking for some more information on the Tampa 2 yesterday I found an excellent summary of this defensive scheme at the Mile High Report - and some Bills talk as well.

I'd recommend reading the entire post by hoosierteacher but the part that caught my attention was in a brief discussion of the current teams employing the Tampa 2:

Who runs the system? Right now the T2 is run by INDY, CHI, MINN, and DET. KC used to run the scheme, but seems to be moving away from it. TB and BUF also ran the system for awhile, and seem to be moving in other directions.

Buffalo is "moving in other directions"?  This was news to me.  Was this because of our discussion of the line getting bigger or just conjecture?  I asked hoosierteacher and he had an interesting response:

There have been some grumblings about changes...

Dan Leberfeld (who covers the AFC East) was on SIrius NFL Radio not too long ago and said that Ralph Wilson is not happy with the system and wants bigger players in the front 7. The signings of Marcus Stroud and Kawika Mitchell would seem to verify the movement away from a T2 in that respect.

Back in 2006 I read this story (it took me awhile to find it again). Knowing the bad rush defense the team was having for a couple of years, I started to follow the Bills from a scheme standpoint (football systems are a kind of hobby with me, especially historical ones). Even the 2006 article was wishy washy on the team being "all in".

With the recent report by Leberfeld, the track record of the program, and the recent signings, I think the Bills are signaling a transition out of the Tampa system. I could be wrong, but watch the defensive line this year, then watch for major personnel changes over the next two years.

It’s my opinion, but it sure looks like a transistion to me.

Best of luck to you and the Bills. As an AFC fan it killed me to watch the Bills lose the multiple SBs awhile back. I hope you guys get one soon if it isn’t at Denver’s expense. I’m also glad Everett is doing better than expected. All of Broncoland wishes him the absolute best.

I for one would be happy with a transition; this bend-but-don't-break philosophy drives me crazy.

Buffalo Rumblings Four and "Oh?"

If only the Bills had a schedule like the Cowboys.  Has anyone looked at who this undefeated "juggernaut" played to reach their incredible 4-0 record?  Their opponents have a combined 3-13 record including barn burners with the 'phins and Rams (both winless) and the imploding Bears. There toughest opponent so far has been the division rivals, Giants - at home.  The Bills opponents so far have a combined 10-6 record.  I'm not saying the Bills will win Monday, but looking at this, I'm simply much less impressed by the four and "Oh?" record.  A better question might be, who wouldn't have gone 4-0 with that schedule?

Buffalo Rumblings Site Suggestions

BuffaloRumblings I have to say is a great blog.  So much so even other team sites at SB Nation have taken note and approve the integrity of this site and the work Brian G. has done.  But with this Bills season hitting a new low and I thought maybe a few tweaks might improve the site for us long-suffering Bills fans, for instance:

  • Add a 2008 Draft countdown clock
  • How about random Buffalo Jills pics with posts
  • And include a Suicide Hotline number somewhere esp. on game day.
Just a few ideas....

Buffalo Rumblings Blacked Out

Damn it!  Well this is great.  I just got notification that the Bills-Atlanta preseason game will be blacked out.  Now what I'm supposed to do?  Watch High School Musical 2 with my daughter?  The NFL is killing me!

Do they really expect a pre-season game to sell-out?  And I still think its absolutely criminal that somehow Syracuse gets included in the so-called 75 mile blackout radius.  At least it looks like all the regular season games will sell out.

Buffalo Rumblings $21 Million Cap Space

I did a quick search to see where the Bills were in terms of Cap space and came up with this interesting article, Ten-million dollar club (June 29, 2007 by Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports)

The Cleveland Browns lead the league with $22 million in available cap space followed by the Buffalo Bills ($21 million) and Minnesota Vikings ($20 million)....

In other words, even if the Buffalo Bills use all of their rookie cap money and their players earn around $5 million in bonuses, they would still have more than $12 million in cap space remaining and could roll that into their 2008 allowance.

Of course this is a double edge sword since the context of the article is how much of a boon this will be for players and their salaries.
