Starting Pitching - swing for the fences
It is my opinion that we should swing for the fences in relation to starting pitching.
It is no good going for a Pineiro or Washburn or another mediocre starter. It will get us to be competitive, might not get us higher than 3/4 in the NL East. We already have enough mediocre starter, ie Pelfrey (with some upside, similar to Pineiro), Maine, Nieve, Niese. We need SPs who might become good/great No 2.
So I really think we need to go for Sheet, while it is a risky investment (and for 1 or 2 years, it is not as risky), the dividend will be hugh. If everything goes right, we will have a no1 and 2 comparable, if not better than the other 3 contender in the East
The wild card is Perez, and what type of character he has, had he just taken the money and gotten fat (like last year) or is he going to be dedicated and try to get back to the ace that he can be, if we hit the jackpot with both Perez and Sheet. Philadelphia would not have enough to hang with us.
Instead of going for the safe bet (costing 10 mil a year) which might make us competative and save the job of Minaya, we should instead be going for the world series with the like of Sheet. If it does not payoff, it is just a gamble we lost, we still has last year's rotation
