What about a re-seed at mid season?

Have the south play each other and the north play each other in weeks 1-5 round robin.

South
Texas 4-1
OU 4-1
Tech 4-1
OSU 2-3
Baylor 1-4
A&M 0-5

North

Kansas 4-1
Missouri 4-1
Nebraska 3-2
Colorado 2-3
Kansas St 1-4
Iowa St. 0-5

The top 3 north teams and the Top 3 south teams form one division. BUT you bring your common game record(including the Head to Head) from the first part of the season in and play the other teams. This maintains head to head and reduces the additional games to be played to 3. This keeps an 8 game regular season.

Big XII A
Kansas 1-1
Texas 1-1
OU 1-1
Tech 1-1
Nebraska 1-1
Missouri 1-1

The bottom 3 south teams and the bottom 3 North Teams form another division. They bring their common records from the last division as well and play a consolation division.

Big XII B
A&M
Kansas St.
Iowa St.
OSU
Colorado
Baylor

You play the three teams in the new division that you haven't played before in weeks 6-8. North has home games the first and thrid week and the south has the home game in the middle. Alternate that the next year. That way hotels can still be planned for. Air fare may be a little different, but isn't all that charter anyway? You could give everyone a bye in between the two divisions so they have an extra week to plan.

So the second half of the season Texas would play Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas. Let say the final records looked like this:

Texas 4-1
OU 4-1
Tech 4-1
Kansas 2-3
Missouri 2-3
Nebraska1-4

You can then have a reasonable tie breaker because the top three teams have all played the same 8 common opponents. Do point differential or penetrations or what ever you want that is something that actually happens on the field.

You can then have a CCG which will always be a rematch...but at least a good rematch. In this case it would actually be for the championship where as other years it might be to bring the top team back down to a co-championship level. Other years it may be just for giggles if the Top team is already two games ahead in the standings. I'd be in favor of getting rid of the CCG all together but I don't make millions of dollars every year from it.

This plan does the following:

1. Increases the SoS for the top teams.

2. Increases the TV ratings for the top games.

3. Gives the Have nots something to play for at the end of the season. A Big XII B championship is nothing to sneeze at.

4. Keeps a 'Championship Game' but makes it much less ridiculous then the current unbalanced Weak North Vs. Powerful South incarnation.

Disadvantages:

1. The Texas/A&M game would have to be played before Thanksgiving. We could still have a Thanksgiving game every other year but it wouldn't be the aggies. I could be Colorado or Nebraska if they end up in our division.

2. I still don't like the championship at the end of the year. It will always be a rematch....but a rematch of the for sure best two teams.

Former Husker Eric Crouch was picked with the third overall pick by Team Texas. A couple other huskers have been picked as well. I'm following the Team Texas doings on my blog:

http://teamtexasfootball.blogspot.com/

Crouch is going to be competing with Kingsbury and Symons, former QBs in a Run-n-Shoot style offense. Obviously they though he could compete. Should be interesting to see.

Bumped from the diaries. --PB--

All this talk of Texas/Nebraska/Missouri leaving for the Big Ten has me thinking. I agree with many of the reasons folk have given for Texas not going. I think Nebraska or Missouri would jump at the chance. This leaves the Big XII in quite a bit of trouble. I think there are a few different scenarios that could play out.

I. Replacing TVs

If the Big XII wants to remain strong it needs to add eye balls on tv sets. Adding TCU doesn’t get this done. If they lose the whole state of Nebraska or the whole state of Missouri, it is going to be tough to replace them.

I like the BYU/Utah option. It gets eyeballs. Mormons : BYU :: Catholics : ND. It is doesn’t play out totally, but you get somewhat more of a nation wide following if you add a Mormon based team.

Solution:
North
Nebraska/Missouri
Colorado
BYU/Utah
Kansas
Kansas St.
Iowa St.

South
No Change

II. Adding TVs

The defection of one member may give the Big XII an opportunity to add even more eye balls. You wouldn’t look in the current covered area because it gets you fewer TV sets. Again UTEP, Rice, TCU, Houston and Colorado St. are out. Beside the BYU/Utah option you could look to the South or Mid-West to build strength. I think SEC and Big 10 money is too powerful to pull any of those teams out. You need to go to the mid majors and look for growth opportunities.

Memphis gets you some Tennessee eye balls and they have a pretty good Basketball program.

I’m not sure Tulane is strong enough to hang in the Big XII, but the Louisiana connection would be great. La Tech might be a better option, but again they are small.

The Big East is still a mess and Cincinnati would be a real catch for those Ohio eye balls.

South Florida wouldn’t make much sense regionally, but just about every team in the conference would vote for them for the recruiting advantage going to South Florida would garner.

If you want to go the other direction, San Diego state might be a California avenue.

Thinking about what just feels right I’m going to go with BYU, Cincinnati, and Memphis.

In the process a conference game is added so that you still play everyone in your division, two teams from the other division, and a traditional match-up(to keep Texas/Texas A&M,etc).

Solution:

West:
BYU
Colorado
Texas Tech
Nebraska/(Baylor if Nebraska leaves)
Kansas St
OU
Texas

East:
Cincinnati
Memphis
Iowa St.
Missouri/(Kansas if Missouri leaves)
OSU
Texas A&M
Baylor/(Kansas if Nebraska leaves)

III. Taking all the TVs

I don’t like either of the two previous solutions. I’d take them and I think they’d be good for the Big XII but bad for Texas Football. Some where between the finagling to add eyeballs and the obligations to show each team in the league on regional TV at least once a year is an option that blow all the others out of the water from a cost to revenue stand point.

Some have suggested that Texas just set out on its own as an independent. I think that is folly. But there are other teams that, like Texas, could almost do that.

NBC’s contract with Notre Dame runs out in 2010. The ability for ND to command cash is even less now then it was in 2003. ND needs help. NBC needs a college football presence to promote its new Sunday night football venture with the NFL. A disintegrating Big XII could give ND and NBC a chance form a slam dunk college football spectacle that would make any college football fan smile.

Six teams. Fifteen games. One a week. Saturday in prime time on NBC. A Super-Mini Conference

Week 1: Notre Dame vs. OU
Week 2: Texas vs. Notre Dame
Week 3: USC vs. OU
Week 4: Texas vs. OU
Week 5: Notre Dame vs. USC
Week 6: Notre Dame vs. Penn St.
Week 7: OU vs. Penn St.
Week 8: Texas vs. Florida
Week 9: USC vs. Penn St.
Week 10: Texas vs. Penn St.
Week 11: Texas vs. USC
Week 12: OU vs. Florida
Week 13a: USC vs. Florida(Day after Thanksgiving)
Week 13: Notre Dame vs. Florida
Week 14: Penn St. vs. Florida

At least one Big 10 team will jump and that will open up space for both Nebraska and Missouri in the Big 10.

Penn St. probably has the least allegiance to the Big 10 as they are recent additions. The suits at Michigan and Ohio St. are savvy though so you could easily replace Penn St with one of those schools.

Texas, Florida and USC are all programs that could go independent today and survive. Together they’d excel. OU gets the good fortune of both being the bad guy that everyone roots against and being first to the table due to the crumbling Big XII.

The new Power 6 conference uses its power to procure 2 guaranteed BCS slots along with a possible 3rd at large spot.

Texas A&M finds a home in the SEC. The rest of the Big XII disperses its self across a suddenly more exciting WAC and Mountain West.

Where does this put Texas? In a great spot. Coupled with our Game against A&M we have 6 guaranteed Nationally Televised games a year. That is big bucks and big exposure. The boo-hooing about our OOC games being Rice and North Texas subsides as we have USC, Florida, ND, and Penn St. added to the list. We probably keep the regional rivalries with Tech and Baylor.

And talk about exciting football.

A proposal to fix Conference Championships.

This BCS debate has caused me to remember my annual diatribe on the screwed up state of our conference championship system. Here is my proposal to fix it.

The idea is that the Big XII champion should be the team with the
best record against the rest of the league. The rest of the sports
world does it this way.

In 2003 a team that was 8-0 played a team that was 6-2. I know that
KSU beat OU, but the fact of the matter is that in the end OU was 8-1
in the Big XII and KSU was 7-2. Meanwhile Texas was 7-1. Based on our
record we should have played in BCS game. Instead, KSU got the auto bid and OU got the BCS championship bid. I understand that KSU
end of season PERFORMANCE was awesome, but we had a better record. You
don't let the Devil Rays into the playoffs because they sweep the
Yankees the last week of the season.

The solution is to have Big XII weekend at the end of the year when
the Championship is currently played. You invite the Team from the
North with the best record to play the team from the south with the
best record if the teams have not already played. If they have then
the teams with the two best records play teams from the other division
with the best record that they haven't played yet. If the two division
champions haven't played but their record is such that the team with
the lower record could not surpass the team with the higher record
then you declare the team with the best record the Conference Champion
and you play the game for shits and giggles. The next highest team
plays the next highest team from the other division that they haven't
played yet to try to help their BCS standing. You get two great games
at the end of the year either way...sometimes they mean something.

2006:

Oklahoma(8-0) vs. Nebraska(6-2). Oklahoma Gets first pick and they hadn't played Nebraska.

Texas(6-1) vs. Missou(4-4) Texas has the 2nd best record so they play the highest team in North that they hadn't played yet.

If OU wins then they are the champions. If Texas wins and OU loses then Texas is the Champion due to the same record and Texas Head to Head win over OU. If Texas loses then OU is the champion whether they win or lose.

2005:

Texas declared the Champion because no one is closer than 1 game away.

Texas(8-0) vs. Nebraska(4-4) for giggles. We have already played Colorado and Mizzou and Nebraska beat Iowa state.

Colorado(5-3) vs. Texas Tech(6-2) Tech beat OU so they get the nod to play the north champion.

2004:

OU declared the Champion because Texas is the only team within one game and OU had already beaten Texas.

OU(8-0) vs. CU(4-4) for giggles

Texas(7-1) vs. Iowa State(4-4) A good performance against a 6-5 team could have given us another boost to the Rose Bowl. This system works best when one division isn't down

2003:
OU declared the Champion because no team is within a game in the standings
OU(8-0) vs. Kstate(6-2) for Giggles
Texas(7-1) vs. Missouri(4-4)(We had a better record then Nebraska and
had already played them.

2002
Colorado(7-1) had the best record and they hadn't played Texas so:
Colorado(7-1) vs. Texas(6-2)
Oklahoma(6-2) vs. K State(6-2)

If Oklahoma beats KState and Texas beats Colorado then Oklahoma is the
Champion because they have the same record as Colorado and Texas and
they beat both teams. if K State beats OU and Texas wins then Texas is
the Champion. If Colorado wins then they are the champion because they
would have the best record.

2001
Texas(7-1) vs. Nebraska(7-1) - had the same record and hadn't played.
Colorado(7-1) vs. OU(6-2)
If Texas beats Nebraska then Texas is the champion. If Nebraska wins
and Colorado wins then Colorado is the champion because they beat
Nebraska and they have the same record as the Corn Huskers. If
Nebraska wins and OU wins then Nebraska has the best record and is the
champion.

2000
OU is declared the Champion because no team that they haven't played
is within a game of them.
OU(8-0) vs. Iowa State(5-3)
Texas(7-1) vs. KState(6-2)(Kstate beat Nebraska that year.

1999
Nebraska(7-1) vs Tech(5-3) Nebraska had already played Texas and A&M
and Tech beat OU.
K-State(7-1) Vs OU(5-3) OU beat A&M and KState had already beat Texas.
If Nebraska wins they are the Champion. If they lose and KState Wins,
K-State is the Champion. If both KState and Nebraska lose then
Nebraska is the champion because they beat K state earlier in the
year. This sucks for Texas(6-2) because they beat Nebraska, but
because they lost to KSU they have to stay home and watch teams that
they beat play.

I'm not going to go back any farther because I've spent too much time
already. This scenario has a ton of advantages:

1. The Team with the best record is the Champion no matter when the
games are played. This makes every game a playoff game.

2. Fun for the fans. Play both of these games in the same stadium. One at 11 and the other at 6. Play it in a city that is big enough to host
4 teams worth of fans.

Reward teams with another game.

Gets the arguments back down to head to head even though not everyone plays each other.

Did I mention how awesome this would be for the fans?

In some cases a team with a better record has to stay home, but this is only because they lost to a team with a better or equal record...its better than watching a team that you beat earlier in the

season and who has a worse record than you go to championship game.

7. Its more fair. You only get one chance at each team. Take advantage.

I think #7 is the most important. CFB is about head to head, you get one chance football. I hate seeing rematches during the bowl and conference championship season. You could even extend this as the 12th game and allow each team from the north to play a team from the south that they haven't played yet. Home fields alternate from North to South each year.
