Just found a great resource for those looking for more than highlight reels. Great resource for fans & armchair GM/scouts who just don't have access to condensed film. The long stories link to long (10m) video's packing in key plays (including mistakes). I've enjoyed the the Mallet and Kaepernick videos so far, but they also cover Andy Dalton, Christian Ponder, Gabbert etc....

They wrote a series called "Draft Winds" for the Sun Sentinel and that seems to be the best way to link to them. I'm impressed at their attempt to generate new content, rather than parrot everything we've already heard.

Big Cat Country Ryan Mallet - my pick for the next Jags QB

I'm becoming an increasing bigger fan of Ryan Mallet.

Big arm, but guy, seems to have a few things figured out.  I had a few minutes so I thought I'd start a little post to assembling misc. articles that stood out to me.  Some seems very genuine, others are the usual draft related PR:

Did anyone hear anything about UDFA Aaron Morgan?

I'm curious to hear how we're trying to use him - as a MLB, rushing LB from the Nickle etc... I suppose I'm way to early, but I never heard where the Jags thought he might fit when the brought him in.

Big Cat Country "With the 26th pick, the Arizona Cardinals select Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State."

Coach Whisenhunt and general manager Rod Graves seem to be BPA drafters, and they have amassed a stable of developing players, many of whom we haven't really seen play.  Despite that they get a bit lucky here matching one of their more dire needs without reaching.

After mopping up their tears over missing out on Sean Weatherspoon, Dan Williams, and Trent Williams BPA thinking had me considering Maurkice Pouncey, and wishing for a legit NT, but it was hard to look away from two very good CB prospects.

Kyle Wilson is a 4 year starter and he certainly is the Least Likely To Fail (LLTF). He's a quick twitch physical corner with added value as a return man.  It'd be hard to find a player who plays bigger for their size, and that attitude and work ethic showed up at the combine when he he lifted the bar 25 times. Despite being a press corner, he's pretty used to playing on his own. In comparison to other CB prospects he's a guy I think does best in man coverage, and he should shine opposite DRC.

On the other hand I considered CB Kareem Jackson who plays the ball better, is probably better in a zone and also has the feet and hips to make him a LLTF pick. Jackson will likely have a lot less penalties called against him, but sometimes you want attitude from a CB, so I went with Wilson after still reeling from the shock of missing out on spoon.

Big Cat Country last year we almost drafted.... MarkSanchez?

According to jaguars this week (02-17-10) and Vic K our GM thought drafting Mark Sanchez could be a great value for us at 8; and he was also excited by Bennie Wells.  The Wells part I've heard before, but not that Sanchez rumor!

Having said that; they never suspected Monroe would fall and had him far higher on their board.

I found the Sanchez part very interesting; I suppose that adds creditability to keeping 10/11 and drafting QB.  I suppose we have to suspect our GM sees value in a QB who's "Sanchez like".... So; anyone want to take up that challenge and compare this years crop to Sanchez?

Big Cat Country Why we reallly switched to the 3-4

Written by MICHAEL C. WRIGHT , and posted on jacksonville.com, this article's got everything; context, great quotes, stats etc.... Most importantly I suspect it'll give us something to talk about!  Enjoy: click here

In short it's explaining that the 3-4 is what we're playing most of the time, and that the switch was necessary due to injuries and roster complications. Here's a few talking points:

  • Does this switch make "post roast" (AKA T.Knighton) our defensive MVP?
  • How much credit does JDR get for recognizing what he's got on his roster? Do you buy into that premise that he had  two bad choices, and as a result prepping the team to play 3-4 just in case was exactly what you'd expect a good coach to do?
  • What about the impact of potential/future injuries, post 3-4 conversion? Does that change what we look for in our safeties?
  • When will Durant be back, and is our LB core really as deep or good as we thought?
