2. Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jaguars finally get a break. For years, they were looking for the heir to David Garrard's starting job at quarterback. Thanks in part to the 49ers' not taking a quarterback and the Titans' taking Jake Locker with the eighth pick, the Jaguars accomplished something that they might not have done until the 2012 draft -- they got their quarterback, Blaine Gabbert. Once Gabbert fell to the 10th pick, the Jaguars traded up with the Redskins to get him. The cost was a second-round pick. Had they tried to move up from the second round to get a quarterback, they might have had to sacrifice a first-rounder in 2012. Drafting at No. 16 originally, the Jags weren't in a good spot to get one of the top-rated quarterbacks. Getting Gabbert was like hitting the lottery, particularly in a division that has elite quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Matt Schaub.

Big Cat Country Evaluating the Jaguars: Coaching

It's inevitable in today's NFL for fans to speculate after just about any loss or disappointment, no matter how unreasonable, about the chances of a change in coaching staff. The fact that owners are often unwilling to wait until the offseason  for a change in their head coach when things go really bad only adds to the fuel of other teams' fans arguing for changes in their own coaches.

Often the smallest mishap, or most minor miscalculation is seen by fans as the most horrible injustice to them, and therefore deem the coach as a person to go. There are often large things, and one can almost always explain why a head coach loses his job (almost: see Dungy in Tampa).

This season we have seen four head coaches lose their jobs, and we can point to a reason for each one. Wade Phillips was doing little to nothing with his team when one considers the talent on that roster. Brad Childress couldn't hold his team together and had a practical mutiny. Josh McDaniels? His horrible decisions on draft day put him on thin ice, and that ice broke with the team getting more losses than any year since 1999 (10). Mike Singletary was put a bad situation in San Fransico, and lost his job because he couldn't produce a winning season in three years with the team.

That all being said, after the jump, let's take a look at the Jaguar's own head coach and coaching staff and ask ourselves this question: Do these coaches deserve to keep their jobs? What (who) could change in the offseason?

Big Cat Country Change for a Jaguars Fan: The "Bad Feeling" - Gone

32827296e_medium

Caption: JON M. FLETCHER / The Times-Union -- 112110 -- Fans show their support for Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones-Drew during Sunday's 24-20 Jacksonville Jaguars victory over the Cleveland Browns at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, FL, November 21, 2010. (Jon M. Fletcher, The Florida Times-Union)

I've been a Jaguar fan for over half of my life. I was just a kid in the late 90's so I had no idea how special the team was that I was seeing. In fact, I had only chosen to be a fan of the Jaguars in spite of my parents and brothers, Dolphins and Bucs fans respectively. So when I actually started learning more and about football in the early 2000's, the team was on the decline and I started getting accustomed to some things.

1st - Our team can only be good on one side of the ball from year to year.

2nd - Never hope for more than a wild-card.

3rd - Never, ever trust a 1st half or 4th quarter lead

4th - Trust that at least one player will be arrested per season.

5th - If the team has a chance to win the game, don't trust that they will: When you get a "bad feeling" about a game, about a situation, everything will go wrong.

Trade involving Groves - predicted! This is a series of comments on an article I wrote a few months ago. You'll see why it is so interesting...

alwaysforgiven821: "Problem for trading any of them is that they would be worth very little. I doubt we’d see more than a 4th or 5th for Groves right now."

JagSoldier: "I would take a 3rd for Reggie and a 4th and 5th for Groves"

JagsAlex87: "Wishful thinking. Nobody, except the Raiders, would give up those kinds of picks for Nelson and Groves. They might get a late round pick, like a 6th or 7th, but not a mid round pick."

Hahahaha!

"I just made a mistake," Bryant said. "Dez Bryant's a great person to be around. He loves the game of football. He can't wait to get back on the field and do whatever to help the team."

I don't, personally, like most players who refer to themselves in the 3rd person. Just another strike to Bryant on my board.

I had the chance to pick for the Jets in Big Cat Country's mock draft. I think you guys would love it if that happened. :)

about 2 years ago Jaguar001_tiny alwaysforgiven821 5 comments

With the 29th pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, the New York Jets select Sergio Kindle, Outside Linebacker from Texas.

In 2009 the Jets had the top rated defense in the NFL. Despite that, defense is where the Jets seem to needs some improvements. DE is the most glaring position, as both starters are over 30 years old. OLB is the other position that needs improvement, and WR as well as NT/DT could use depth. Really, they just need someone who can rush the passer consistently. They had 32 sacks last year and while that isn't bad... it isn't great either. And for a top defense in the NFL, a great pass rusher could help them continue to dominate.

In years past the Jets have traded up in the first round to select players they target. While that could happen again, the needs are not so glaring and the draft is deep in the positions they would like to improve, so while they might move up on draft day, don't bet on it.

Sergio Kindle falling to 29 is likely the best thing that could happen to the Jets on draft day. He has a great package of speed, weight and height. His athleticism translated into him playing various positions in college, so don't be surprised if he draws time in other positions, at least in practice. He is likely the best pass rushing OLB prospect in the draft (if you consider Graham a DE). This would be as solid a pick as the Jets could hope for on draft day.

(P.S. Did you say 3-4 sentences or paragraphs describing the pick, Loesche? I'm windy, I know...) ;)

With The 28th Pick of the NFL draft the San Diego Chargers select Ryan Matthews, RB, Fresno State.

I was very tempted to take Rolando McClain because there is no way in the real thing that he falls out of the 1st round. However I feel that RB is just a little bit more of a Need for them than CB and they will be able to get a decent CB in the 2nd. RB is a need after they lost LdT and and have no idea what will happen with Sproles. For one Matthews will give them a solid back who can play every down if needed or in this case the bigger load that sproles can’t handle.

Ryan Matthews is the second best RB in the draft - a few people even say they believe he'll end up being the best in the NFL. With LT gone and Sproles their only option (and what is going on tere, really?), the Chargers pick a solid RB in Ryan Matthews here.

(Note: TheAngelsColts gave this pick in the draft thread, as jagsfan4life said he couldn't. I figured that the pick was a good one, and so I posted it. The thoughts are his, and I added some myself. Hope that's okay!)

Big Cat Country Question Mark Players - What to Expect

What should we expect for the question mark players?

First I should establish who I am referring to when I say "question mark players." I am speaking of those players who have under preformed in the last few years. The players who have caused the fans of this team to say one of two things: keep them or get rid of them. It is interesting how avid fans can be about their opinion – I find there are very few who don’t have an opinion. I do – though I hope mine doesn’t come out too much in this post. Where it does, you’ll now. Now, the players I wish to look at are the following:

Derrick Harvey, Quentin Groves, Brad Meester, Reggie Nelson. I also would like to review a player who was in this position last year, Marcedes Lewis. I simply want to look at what I believe we can expect of them in the next year or so. Will they be here?  What kind of seasons can we expect out of them if they do stay? Now, I won’t go into tremendous details – perhaps if it is wanted, I could do more detailed posts… anyway, let’s start with Lewis.

Marcedes Lewis:

Lewis_matchup_medium

via static.nfl.com

He is not here because of what his situation is this offseason, but last. I remember the talk about him being another first round "bust." Sure, he showed some flashes but many fans considered him unworthy of the position he was selected and a mediocre TE. Heck, I remember thinking Greg Estandia was going to be better than Lewis would be. Indeed – when he was drafted we all thought it was for his catching skills, and yet he only has 2 TDs in each of the last three years. His first downs per year have stayed around 20. However, the improvement this past year came in the average yards per catch. I compared Lewis to some of the league’s best (in my opinion).

Big Cat Country What (or who) do you miss most?

This, I suppose, is not really an "article." It is more of a... survey? Discussion, I hope. As I've been watching the Jaguars play the last few weeks a few things struck me. First: This team is different. Much different from teams we've had in the past. And if this off season was any indication, more change will come.  Of course, that happens and it is a good thing (for the most part). It means the team is developing and changing. Staying young and healthy. So I got to thinking of what I missed about the Jaguar teams of the past. Sure, it's only been about 15 years... but the great thing about that is that I was able to share every year with this team, unlike many people my age (early twenties). Most people hear so much about the past of their team that they never experienced. I have had the privilege to experience every (well, most every) moment of this team's history so far. And I do miss a few things...

I miss watching Fred Taylor run. I love Maurice Jone-Drew as much as anyone, and he certainly is exciting. But for me, watching Fred run the ball was captivating. And honestly, I think my favorite year was 07 for him. Watching his power, speed and fluid movements. I miss Fred.

I miss Donovin Darius' hits. We've had the chance to see some good hits from Alexander this season, but Donovin... every game I watched with him playing I couldn't wait to see the hit that I knew he would put on somebody. Remember that clothesline tackle he put on a Green Bay player? Dirty hit - low point of his play, but I remember it.

I miss Jimmy Smith's fluid movements... the way he made everything seem almost easy. I remember that when he'd catch a pass or get a TD... after the play he'd get up as if it normal or expected. A remember a few times when he'd get a touchdown, drop the ball and walk to the sideline. Yeah, it was a touchdown, but it was to be expected, right?

I miss Stroud and Henderson's first three years together. Wow - I remember that first season, and my oh my. Those two had me pumped. They were to statues in the middle of the field - two giants.

I miss Brunell and his attitude towards the game. He was such a talented QB who loved football and loved this team. I miss watching him throw the ball. I was heart broken when we didn't keep him on.

----

So... yeah. I miss more, yes, but those are some of the top things. Now, don't get me wrong - I love our Jags. I can't wait to see what the team will look like next year. Derek Cox, Terrance Knighton, Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton offer a chance for a lot of good memories. Think about watching Mike Thomas and Mike Sims-Walker continue to develop, for MJD to continue to shine and for Garrard to keep us excited with his pass/run dual threat. For, hopefully, Derrick Harvey to continue to develop and become and exciting pass rusher. For... well, I could go on and of. To put it simply: I can't wait to get memories of the current team.

So what or who do you miss most of the Jags of the past?

Buffalo Rumblings Thanks Bills Fans (from a Jag fan)

Though we haven’t had as much interaction as I’m use to on SBnation this past week, you guys truly are some of the best fans in the league. You guys are loyal to your team, knowledgeable and look on the bright side. Seriously – I feel for you guys. You are in one of the toughest divisions in the NFL and have more injuries than a bread factory has rolls. ’

I actually enjoyed the game a lot today. It had suspense. Sure, I had wanted the Jags to win with 250+ yards rushing and 40+ points… but I love hard fought games even more. Reminds me of football before replay.

I’m praying for Wood and that nasty break, and do hope the Bills can turn it around next year. A team like yours and with you fans deserves that, and a good HC. One can hope, right?

The only play I didn’t like in the whole game was that face mask on MJD. Don’t remember your player’s name… but the slamming of a player to the ground by the face mask is inexcusable and unbelievable, even if it was to save a TD (which came anyway)… so that’s my only complaint, and it is against one player – not the fans or the teams.

Until next to we play, seeya. :)
