Red Reporter 2012 Mets: At Least Jose Reyes Isn't Dragging You Down Anymore!

512px-mg_4618_r

via upload.wikimedia.org. ILURAD

Good morning, Mets! How are you? Still embroiled in a terrible ordeal involving finances and ownership? Yes? Good for you!

Although the future of the Mets franchise looks a little better this year, there's still a lot of drama over in Old New York. Scott Boras thinks the Mets should be sold to new owners, the MLBPA disagrees, and a federal trial with almost 400 million dollars in damages at stake will start next week. It isn't clear how much any verdicts will directly affect the Mets (of the damages already awarded, only a few million will come from the Mets organization specifically), but it's probably not a very pleasant place to be sitting for Mets GM Sandy Alderson, the players, or the fans.

Red Reporter Game 143: Cincinnati Reds @ Chicago Cubs

Next Game

Cincinnati Reds
@ Chicago Cubs

Wednesday, Sep 7, 2011, 8:05 PM EDT
Wrigley Field

Johnny Cueto vs Ryan Dempster

Clear. Winds blowing in from center field at 15-20 m.p.h. Game time temperature around 65.

Complete Coverage >

Tonight, Johnny Cueto takes the mound to try to cement that ERA title, and reel in a series win over the Cubs. At this point, barring injury, he'll have more than enough innings to qualify - with less than 20 innings to go, and probably six starts remaining. However, his ERA seems to be creeping upwards with every start, so a nice long, dominant performance, would help things nicely.

This will be the fourth time that the Reds have faced off against Ryan Dempster in 2011 - and we've lost 2 out of those three games. Even though Dempster is having a mediocre season, he's pitched well against us, allowing a total of only 5 runs in 19 innings. No Reds hitter even performed particularly well over those three games; in fact Drew Stubbs is the only current Red to hang so much as an extra base hit on Dempster this season. But Edgar Renteria and Ramon Hernandez have decent lifetime records against the Cubs righty, so it's no surprise to see them both in tonight's lineup (lineups after the jump).

As for the team's record, a win tonight would mean the Reds will have won all but one of the season's series against the Cubs (though we have one more home series to go) and would lift us to 9-5 total. Additionally, winning tonight would bring us within a game of a .500 record.

Red Reporter Ryan Hanigan Fighting! Game 125 Thread 2

Well, the offense wants to win this game. Yet to see about the pitching.

I am tempted to abuse this forum to push my dastardly pro-Hanigan agenda, but I don't want to get fired when the boss comes back. Oh well.

Red Reporter You Can't Just Sit Back and Wait on Seven Solo, Two Run, and Three Run Homers. Reds beat the Padres 13-1

Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game

It's hard to differentiate between the two home runs of Miguel Cairo (5 previous HR in 2011), and the two home runs of Ryan Hanigan (3 previous HR is 2011). But Miguel's came earlier in the game, and were therefore clutchier, so he gets the much coveted award. Homer Bailey and 2/3 of the rest of the offense get the HM. I don't actually have the official RR JNMHSOTG guidance document here, so feel free to yell at me.

Key Plays

  • The first batter of the night, the venerable Will Venable, got on base with a single, and promptly got picked off by Homer Bailey during the next at bat, foretelling the wholesale destruction the Reds would rain on the Padres in the nine innings to come.
  • The Reds scoring party got started in the first inning, and then, verily, as if it had jumped out of a Pringles can, just wouldn't stop. By the end of the night, 14 runs were scored between the two teams, all via 8 home runs. In addition to the 4 by Cairo and Hanigan, Jay Bruce, Joey Votto, and Todd Frazier each contributed knocks, and Padres first baseman Kyle Blanks hit a solo homer that would be San Diego's only run for the night.
  • Out of the Padres pitchers, starting right hander Tim Stauffer took the brunt of the attack, before coming out in the third, allowing as many runs as he got outs.
  • Erik Hamren, who came in for the 6th and 7th inning, was the only Padres hurler who went unscathed, and in fact, struck out 4 in his two innings of work.
  • Homer Bailey bit his thumb at the haters who want to condemn him to the bullpen, by throwing 7 innings and allowing only one run. (He didn't actually bite his thumb, as that would be a violation of official rule 8.02(a)(1).) He also walked one and struck out seven. Out of the six hits he allowed, one was a home run, and the other 5 were all singles.
  • Arredondo took over for 1-2-3 eighth, followed by Travis Wood for his very first MLB relief appearance ever. Wood was a bit rough, allowing two base runners, on a hit by pitch and a single, before buckling down to get the last out. You can't really blame him, though, as this is his first appearance since his August 5 start for the Bats.

Red Reporter Jeff Brantley, Accidental Racism, and You

So, those of you who were around for Thursday's game thread will already have heard all about this, and a few more of you who listened to the game on the radio will have heard it as well. During the broadcast, Jeff Brantley began to talk about how his experience working the 2006 World Baseball Classic.

Brantley: That was one of the toughest assignments I’ve ever had was doing the World Baseball Classic and doing the Taiwan team and the team from China. Trying to pronounce those names. (chuckles)

Kelsh: Was that back in ’06?

Brantley: Aw, man, I was struggling!

Kelsh: That got you ready to go, though, didn’t it?

Brantley: Oh, I was ching-chang-ing to death. It was hard.

Warning: This post is the epitome of tl:dr. So, I have bolded some points. These are not for emphasis necessarily - just what you might read if you don't fell like reading the whole thing.

Drew Stubbs comes in at #14, and Chris Heisey rounds out the list at #20. The top three (Wieters, Hanson, McCutchen, A) are pretty much major leaguers by now

The list of 20 represents prospects for only 9 teams (of the 14 represented in the IL) The Indians top the list with 4, but the Rays and Orioles have three apiece (each in the top 11)

Definitely a good hypothesis.

This is a little weird for multiple reasons.

A. What is this Earned Run Value that the article talks about? Was that in the book? Because I missed that, evidently.

B. Demetri Martin is way too cute to play Paul dePodesta.

I'm really not looking forward to this movie at all.

Red Reporter World Baseball Classic Championship Game.

Oh Boy! Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. Ok, so this is a little anticlimactic. I have the greatest respect for Japan and Korea's baseball organizations, and applaud their players for their hardwork. But seriously? This game? AGAIN? What are we going to see that we didn't see last game? Or the game before that. Or the three before that. Or the three from the last WBC.

Well, at least we know the teams are fairly matched. The four previous games were split evenly between the two teams, and in 2006, Korea beat Japan twice, before losing to their rival in the semi-finals.

Game Time: 9:00 PM ET

Probable Pitchers: Hisashi Iwakuma and Jung-Keun Bong. Iwakuma pitched very well in the Pool A seeding game against Korea, but took a 1-0 loss, in part because Korea's pitching, with Bong starting, was marginally better. Bong was fantastic again against Japan in their first Round 2 matchup, giving up 1 run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings. Yu Darvish threw fewer than 30 pitches last night, so he is available to enter the game in relief, and I would expect to see him if Iwakuma gets in trouble, or to close out the game like he did against the US. Suk-Min Yoon and Daisuke Matsuzaka, the semifinal starters, are unavailable for this game, and so is Takahiro Mahara - who threw exactly 30 pitches last night (Were the Japanese rule cards ALSO improperly translated? Jesus christ, WBC people. Get with it.)

Other: Although I mocked Jorge Cantu for calling Korea and Japan the same team, it's true that they have very similar strengths - pitching and defense. (Even Shin-Shoo Choo admits it). I'm sure this game will be very slap-hitty and fundamental-y. With Japan missing Shuichi Murata, I think Korea definitely has the advantage in power potential, but whether it'll show up or not against premium pitching (You'll notice that high-score against Venezuela came against Carlos Silva and Enrique Gonzalez on the mound,) is very much up in the air. I think Japan has the more reliable offense, but as we know, I am real crappy at predicting how games are going to turn out. (Baseball IS a little unpredictable...)

I'm still advocating the 'triple whale' play. I think it could revolutionize the game.

Red Reporter WBC Semifinal 2: United States v. Japan.

It sounds like a vaguely familar matchup, especially when you consider that both teams are competing for the right to invade korea, that is, meet them in the final game.

Game Time: 8:00 PM ET

Probable Pitchers: Daisuke Matsuzaka v. Roy Oswalt.

Red Reporter WBC Tonight: Korea v. Venezuela

Game time: 9:00 PM ET

Probable Pitchers: Suk-Min Yoon (Korea) and Carlos Silva (Venezuela)

While Korea's pitching has been superb against many of its Classic foes, we've also seen it collapse against Japan in the first round. Venezuela's lineup is far more fearsome that Japan's, and sports an impressive amount of power. I suspect that if things start to go downhill, they'll fall apart quickly for Korea's young starter. Korea's strength's have always been touted as pitching and defense, so I think that if Yoon can keep it in the park, he could keep the score low. On the other side, Carlos Silva has been good in the classic, but against such hard hitting foes as Italy and the Netherlands. No offense to those squads, but I don't think it would take much for the Koreans to eke out a few runs here and there - a single here, a stolen base there.

Realistically though, I doubt small ball will be enough against Venezuela. I think Venezuela'll keep on hitting, and move on to the final game.

Red Reporter World Baseball Classic Thread: 3/19

Not a big day for the WBC, today, with only one seeding game, and most Americans focused on some big college sports event for whatever reason.

Today's Game: Korea v. Japan, 9:00 PM

Ok, so this is the fourth game between Korea and Japan this classic. As it's fairly meaningless, does anyone care anymore? The loser has to play the mighty Venezuelans, but the winner gets an easy berth to the final game against the weak US? Maybe not so much. In any case, the Japanese will have Matsuzaka ready for their semi-final game and instead start Tetsuya Utsumi, against Korea's Won-Sam Jang. Utsumi pitches for the Yomiuri Giants, and has been one of the top pitchers in the Central League of NPB for the last three years. Jang was the KBO's ROY runner-up in 2006, and his overall record in the 2008 Olympics was 12 1/3 innings, 0 ER, 11 K - to be fair, most of that was a complete game shut out against the Netherlands. In any case, while pride is on the line, neither team wants to overkill with the finals coming up. Also, evidently the Koreans claimed PETCO's pitchers moung by planting a flag on it. ..so it's theirs now, right?

Yesterday's recap after the break.

Today's Game:

Pool B: 9:00 PM - Mexico v. Cuba

By beating Australia yesterday, Mexico earned itself a place in Pool 1, and a match with Cuba today to determine Round 2 seeding. Again, I think that the extra game for Mexico exacerbates their weakness in pitching. Cuba didn't play great against Australia themselves, and Mexico's definitely got enough in them to pull off an upset in this game. The source I have for the starting pitching is probably semi-credible, saying Carlos Silvino (Ciro) Licea for Cuba and Pablo Ortega for Mexico. So far in the tournament, Ortega has pitched 0 innings, and given up 2 runs, (infinite ERA! whoo!) Licea, a late addition to the Cuban roster who has not yet made an appearance, has been a star pitcher in Cuba for over a decade, and has the third-most wins among active Cuban pitchers.

The winner of this game will play Japan in game 1 of round 2, and the loser will play Korea. Official "That's Racist" moment of  Round 1 - Jorge Cantu:"Korea and Japan are pretty much both the same team." Oh, Jorge, you can't say that.

Red Reporter World Baseball Classic Previews/Game Thread: 3/9

Now with fewer mistakes and less suck! (well, kinda). This'll be pretty short.

Today's Games:

Pool B:

Game 3 - 10:00 PM EDT - South Africa v. Mexico

This could be an interesting game, where, once again, pitching is weak.  Mexico is starting Elmer Dessens, a 38 year old who pitched a pretty good season for the Reds in 2002. South Africa is hitting the other end of the age spectrum for their starter, tabbing Justin Erasmus, a 19 year old in Boston's farm system. Mexico used 8 of its pitchers yesterday - although only Perez and Campos are unavailable, the winner of this game will have a day off tomorrow before playing the winner of Cuba v. Australia. Although Mexico's pitching looked pretty terrible yesterday, it's important to note that Australia's offense looked way better even in exhibition games than South Africa's - I think Mexico will avoid elimination here.

Pool C:

Game 4 - 6:30 PM EDT - Italy v. Canada

With both teams facing elimination, Canada will be pitching Vince Perkins (27 year old minor leaguer- currently with the Cubs) against Italy's Dan Serafini, who looked decent in one exhibition match. I think that Canada's offense is going to be too good for Italy, who did not score against Venezuela, but Canada's pitching is not as good, so we may see another high scoring game here. Canada has homefield advantage, but I'm not even sure we've seen that work out for teams so far. Canada, Japan, and Mexico have all lost important games in their home stadia. Perhaps Puerto Rico will stay perfect at Hiram Bithorne and be the example that proves the rule.

Pool D:

Game 4 - 6:30 PM EDT - Netherlands v. Puerto Rico

Ah,  can lightning strike twice? Of course, scientifically, yes, it can, but it seems unlikely here. (As unlikely as Netherlands beating DR?) It is important to note that although the Dutch had solid pitching against the DR, the Dominican bats had been cold in two of the exhibition games leading up to their opener. Not so for Puerto Rico who scored 7 against Panama on Saturday. The Dutch are starting Rick Vandenhurk, the Holland Hammer, who, admittedly, might be better than Sidney Ponson (but may have a more frigid gastrointestinal system). VandenHurk is young, and shows promise, but has had limited success in the major leagues with Florida, and although he pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings against the Reds in exhibition, didn't look all that great doing it, allowing three hits and two walks. Puerto Rico will go with Ian Snell, of the Pittsburgh Pirates, on the mound. I think either starter could dominate or get knocked around, but I still like Puerto Rico's offense over the Netherlands. PR's manager that Yadier Molina will be the starting catcher - and you'd imagine that means that Ivan Rodriguez will be DHing, considering the amazing day at the plate he had on Saturday. Of course, that would mean Geovany Soto sits. The winner automatically qualifies for Round 2, and the loser plays the DR.
