I swear, I'm not a noob to the game of hockey (been watching the Hawks for almost 20 years now) but my wife asked me a question during the game that I just couldn't answer!

When penalties are called at the same time, how is it determined that play will resume at either 5v5 or 4v4?  Does it have something to do with whether the penalties occurred before or after the play was dead?  Does it depend on the type of penalties called?

I spent my evening at Philips Arena tonight and it appears I couldn't have picked a better time to enter Blueland!  What a game..  Since this was my first game, I was on the outside looking in on a few instances tonight and to help alleviate my ignorance, can some of you vets help me out?
