Player Evaluating Statistic
It is tough to compare two completely different players like Michael Bourne and Albert Pujols. There is no easy way to have all of the categories weigh in and you can just add up there stats and compare them. Homeruns are more difficult to come by than a RBI, so therefore should have more value to each one that a player hits. So what I have created is a method that weighs each individual stat for the players. The stat is called PAR.
I am basing this stat off the average stats ,of my main fantasy league's 8 team standard format, over the past couple years and I found the following averages, 1040 Runs, 1038 RBIs, 272 HRs, 164 SBs, and a batting average of .272. These come from your standard league roster of C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, CI (corner infielder), MI (middle infielder), and 5 outfielders. So for the statistic I am going to say that Runs and RBIs have the same weight of 1. I am going to give HRs, a weight of 3.8 (average number of runs/ average number of hrs (1040/272)). So this means if player x hits 26 homers he will have a PAR of 100, you must forget about his other stats for the example. I then used the same method for figuring out the weight of stolen bases which is 6.3 (1040/164).
So as you can see homers and stolen bases contribute more to a player’s PAR than that of RBIs and Runs. So for example a player that posts the line of 10 HRs, 100 Runs, 65 RBIs, and 35 stolen bases will have a PAR of roughly 424. A player who hits 30 Hrs, 100 Runs, 110 RBIs, and 5 SBs will have a PAR of roughly 365. I know there are some of you who are saying that the stat puts too much emphasis on stolen bases, and yes if you draft a team solely based on PAR you may have team that has a good number of base stealers. But you have to think, a player who gives you 50 stolen bases is a huge asset, but his PAR contribution from HRs and RBIs will likely be lacking.
So overall the stat gives you a good idea on how the player performs in the four offensive categories, and how he will contribute to your team.
Preliminary Top 20 Projected PAR
527.1 Jacoby Ellsbury 526.4 Matt Kemp 471.3 Jose Reyes 465.3 Justin Upton 455.3 Hanley Ramirez 422.7 Jose Bautista 416.1 Carlos Gonzalez 413.9 Albert Pujols 403 Dustin Pedroia 395.3 Joey Votto 390.9 David Wright 380.1Miguel Cabrera 374.7 Troy Tulowitzki 372.1 Evan Longoria 366.2 Mark Teixeira 356.9 Prince Fielder 354.4 Josh Hamilton 347.3 Adrian Gonzalez 346.6 Robinson Cano 297.7 Ryan Zimmerman

I am looking to change the name or come up with an acronym for PAR, comments are greatly appreciated.

Here is quick rundown on the braves cap room, I assumed Arb numbers and that Chpper retires and McLouth is bought out of his club option, KK, Linebrink, Proctor, Gonzo, and Sherrill are all leaving. So included in the 73 Million would be the 5 starting pitchers currently used, 6 relief pitchers, starting catcher, backup catcher, 1B, 2B, 3B, RF, 2 infield ULT. So that leaves CF, LF, and back up outfielder as well as a short stop, which could be filled by Pastornicky. Then another utility like Hinske for about a million. So with another 1.5 we are looking around 75 million in need of CF,LF, SS, and 2 relief pitchers. So the braves have the money to make a deal for a player like kemp or upton and will still have room in the cap for a lf and ss, and imagine if the braves could get ride of 10 million or so of Lowe's salary. Thanks to mlb cots, and thoughts on next years roster?
Bobby Cox and the Atlanta Braves: Beyond Baseball
I thought this video was cool when i saw it on ESPN, and I found it on youtube, it is not the same as watching it on tv, but its not too bad.
Braves' Double A Pitching
Just a quick little write up about how the braves' pitching is great, in the minors.
Trio of pitchers in the Carolina- California All- Star Game
The trio of Teheran, Delgado, and Hoover have all been selected.
Pen Ideas
Alright so the pen has been over used, with Eric, Moylan, Gonzo all appearing in too many games. I don't like how uneven innings pitching are distributed. I know Gonzo and Soriano are probably the the two top guns and they need to be in as much as possible without being overused. I would like to bring in the idea of having 13 pitchers and 12 position players on the 25 man roster. When Buddy comes back along with Buddy, Comp., and Hanson (demoted to make room for Valdez, we could use one more of them. This would help the pen, but it leaves one less position player on the bench.
What do you think about 13 pitchers on the 25 man roster?
6/3 A Crazy Night
Wow. I really don't know what to say about all that has happened tonight. As a Braves fan I am not too happy, but what do you all think? I like than Hanson has been called up, Medlen to the pen, and Nate for outfield help. I don't like the release of Glavine, i thought it should have been after his first start to at least show some respect to his hard work. Locke, Morton, and GH all moved in the trade. That trade was a similar trade to the Tex trade, but It is at least longer term. I hate to see Locke and GH moved (two promising prospects). This is a night that I don't know what to say about, but over the season this night will be locked back at many times.
What do you all think?
Ok So its 9:15, and I have had time to think about the trades and everything that went on tonight. I would have to say I am actually happy with the trade, the Glavine has is pros and cons, and Hanson gets a start and who is not excited about that?
All Star Game
JJ (if you could vote for pitchers)should pitch in the All Star Game, he does not get enough attention in the league. Jair has been amazing this year and no doubt needs to make it to the All-Star Game. Also, fans need to vote for McCann and Jones. Kotchman has been playing well along with Yunnel, but not great.
What are your starting NL line ups? Please post your starting line up for the NL or AL.
I think Glavine needs to retire, and save the Braves money along with making room for Hanson. He is making a start for the Gbraves, and should be up with Medlen in the or KK in the Pen.
Braves Plans for 2009 and the future?
I personally don't think the braves should trade Teheran, Heyward,Freeman,Medlen, or Hanson. We can wait for Heyward next year and maybe platoon Hernandez with Schafer? Next years outfield with Heyward,Schafer, and Frenchy should be pretty sweet. Yes Jeff most likely won’t be a super star, but he should stay around the 90 to 110 RBI range. Along with his bat I just love his arm in right field being such a threat, along with Schafer in Center. I say we get Hanson and Medlen both up next year with one being in the starting rotation. The Rotation should look sweet with Lowe ,JJ, Vazquez, Hudson, and a battle for the last spot by Hanson, Medlen, and Kawi. The braves need to hold off on any trades for this year and just go with what they have with a better year for them in 2010!
Yes next year maybe too soon for Heyward, but maybe a mid-season jump to fill in for B. Jones?
