California Golden Blogs DBD 11.11.11 OUR DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM...........

......ICILE!!!!

LET ME HEAR IT!

WHOSE DOMICILE???

OUR DOMICILE!!!!

You might have thought I was talking about DOOM, but if there's someone out there who's doomed, it's not the sturdy California Golden Bears, oh no! In fact, it's the Oregon State University Beavers who are doomed! They're coming into our house, thinking our 2-6 record against them is more important than their 2-7 record against this season. Thinking that just because they wear orange and black like some silly baseball team or something that they can put up their feet and make themselves comfortable at AT&T Park. Well, no sir-ee Bob! In fact, this is where we come in.

Are you sick as hell of losing to the friggin' Beavers every year? I know I sure am. This monkey's got to come off our backs. If you feel the same, come to the game on Saturday, bring some passion, make some noise, and encourage our guys to roll all over them and give our seniors their first taste of victory against OSU.

Would you like a bowl game this year? If so, come to the game, make some noise, and help our guys lock up bowl eligibility.

Is it acceptable to lose to a team that lost to Sacramento State? Do you want 49er16 to make fun of us for the rest of the year? Would that be any way to head into Big Game Week? If you don't think so either, head over to AT&T park, and let's help get the Bears a win.

This is a game we should win, this is a game we must win, and this is a game I believe we WILL win. I don't buy this doom crap. Let's take it to these jokers. I can't stand Oregon State. I want to exorcise some demons. Let's do this for Jahvid. Let's do this for Riley. Let's do it for the 61st minute.

Who's with me?

GO BEARS!

California Golden Blogs Texas and Oklahoma Teams Finally to Pac-16?

Now that Syracuse and Pitt are moving to the ACC, it looks like the ball is really rolling on realignment and superconferences. West Virginia and Texas A&M look to be headed to the SEC, and that would seem to be the final nail in the coffin for the Big East (at least as a football conference), and now we're hearing that Texas is finally realizing that the only sensible option is to move west and join a Pac-16 with Texas Tech and the Oklahomas. From that Burnt Orange Nation link:

California Golden Blogs 7.26.11 The end of science fiction

NOOOOOOO!

A team of Chinese scientists has apparently "proven"  that time travel is impossible. Since this is a key premise of many a science fiction book/tv/film storyline, it means the genre has been delivered a grave blow by the Chinese.

Also, it means I won't ever be able to go back in time and do that one thing over again that I've always wished I could. I'm sure everyone's got one of those.

Anyway, in the poll and the comments, feel free to share your opinion on your favorite science fiction films that you can no longer fully support because of the invalidated premise.

Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt provided a public glimpse into the hypocrisy of recession-era America.

Long before the revelations about how Frank and Jamie McCourt had hoisted the Los Angeles Dodgers with the petard of their divorce-bound nouveau-riche arrogance—the side-by-side houses in Malibu, the use of the team to finance personal vacations, the "charity" that spent a quarter of its budget on executive compensation—we Dodger fans, like homeowners who can smell the black mold before chipping away at the bathroom plaster, sensed the rot at the organization's core.

California Golden Blogs DBD 04.12.11 The "Ghost" Comes Back to Life

In 2000, San Francisco International Airport (a.k.a. SFO) completed a brand new, beautiful, and iconic International Terminal. It's pretty much what you think of now when you think of SFO:

Well, SFO had international flights before then, but they operated out of Terminal 2, which was originally the Central Terminal Building that was built in 1954. Now that the international airlines had moved out of T2, it sat empty. In normal times, this would be an opportunity to quickly rebuild and renovate, so the gates would be available for new airlines and new flights. However, these weren't normal times. September of 2001 brought us a massive airline-based terrorist attack that we all remember, which severely impacted the demand for air travel. Soon after, the huge Silicon Valley-led growth in the Bay Area's economy, which had contributed to the record air traffic at SFO in 2000, also took a nose dive as the "dot-com bubble" burst.

So, the gates weren't needed, and Terminal 2 was closed off. For 8 years. People began referring to it as the "Ghost Terminal", and it was indeed quite eerie.

Here's a neat set of photos taken inside the abandoned terminal at night by a fellow who is good at taking creepy photos, with a little bit of light painted in with a long exposure, to accent the creepiness. I may or may not have been present when those photos were taken.

Anyway, in 2007 Virgin America began operating out of SFO as its home base. Not coincidentally, JetBlue Airways came to SFO. Southwest Airlines decided that costs and delays had come down enough to return to SFO. With all this new traffic, the folks at the airport realized they would soon need to open some more gates! It was time to renovate T2.

Three and a half years later, the new terminal is finished and ready to go! It opens for business on Thursday, with Virgin America and American Airlines as the main tenants for now (I believe American will eventually move to Terminal 1 after it gets remodeled in a few more years). It's a beautiful terminal with some nice finishes and clever architectural and environmental elements; the building is the first airport terminal in the US to achieve LEED Gold certification, I believe.

They had a media day last Thursday, and an Open House for members of the community to come by this past Saturday, so there are photos available. Here's a good slideshow from CNET's story, if you haven't had a chance to see it in person. I think it's a lot lighter and airier than almost any other airport terminal I've ever seen. It's got tons of natural light, and it's a really nice place to be. Even the baggage claim area is relatively bright and inviting. Hopefully the nice surroundings can alleviate some of the stress of travel.

So... what do you think? Any plans to fly out of T2 soon?

California Golden Blogs NCAA Elite 8 Sunday Open Thread

Game 1: VCU-Kansas (now)

Game 2: Kentucky-UNC (4:26PM Pacific)

It's 28-17 VCU with 7:26 left in the first half, and it doesn't look the slightest bit fluky based on how the two teams are playing. Is anyone watching this awesomeness???

Let's go VCU!!!!

I have to go run an errand pretty soon here, but I thought people would want an open thread for today's games, so here you go. Chat away!

Who are people rooting for in the Kentucky-UNC game?
