42yo wife and mom of 2; fan of UofA sports, D'backs and Suns; love "cult" TV and punk music; passionate about leftist (NOT liberal) politics

I was born and raised in Arizona, living almost every day of my first 42 years there. In February of 2014, I was lucky enough to get a job offer 25 "miles from San Francisco. So, I now live in enemy territory.

Diamondbacks 4, Giants 8: Watching History Happen

Tthe Giants' battery mates each managed a grand slam in a game that went from a pitchers' duel to a laugher in two short innings.

D-backs 5, Dodgers 3: Bobbleheads + Tony La Russa

You can say that Tony LaRussa is our savior and turned it around, or you can say the glorious weekend of the Gerardo Parra Bobblehead giveaway gave us the Mystical Power of Grit. Anyone who knows...

Diamondbacks 1, Dodgers 4: Beyond Resurrection

Anyone hoping for a return to life for our team was sorely disappointed today. Hopefully, there was time spent with family and hunting eggs to take away the misery. At this point, our summer may be...

Fantasy Baseball Reminder

With the season making an early debut this year, we got our Snake Pit fantasy baseball show on the road late last month. Blank_38 is the commissioner of one league, while I am the commissioner...

Tanaka won't be posted

ESPN is reporting that Tanaka won't be coming to MLB, based upon multiple newspaper accounts coming from Japan.

D-backs 3, Nats 2: Nothing Wrong with Average

With the team out of the play-off race numerically for a while, there was nothing to play for but pride and hopes of finishing a second straight season at .500. Call that average, call it mediocre,...

NL MVP Breakdown

"Goldschmidt leads the NL with 106 RBIs and ranks second to Pedro Alvarez with 31 homers, but he's more than just a slugger. He ranks first among MLB first basemen with 13 steals, and is third in the league in walks (90) and tied for second in pitches per plate appearance (4.20). Goldschmidt's defense has also prompted some Diamondbacks people to compare him with Mark Teixeira around the bag. Bill James' Fielding Bible gives Goldschmidt a defensive runs saved ranking of plus-14, second best in the league behind the Cubs' Anthony Rizzo."

Kubel to Cleveland

The book has officially been closed on the affiliation of Jason Kubel and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The ticker on CBS Sports just informed me that Arizona is sending Kubel to the Cleveland Indians...

Diamondbacks 5, Phillies 9: Hangover Sunday

After playing the equivalent of two games last night, we can only imagine what both teams were feeling this morning. If I didn’t want to get up and watch the game less than 9 hours later, I can...

Arizona's Savior: Patrick Corbin

Nice write-up on ESPN by Jerry Crasnick.

Braun suspended for rest of season, will not appeal

Major League Baseball has suspended Milwaukee Brewers slugger Ryan Braun without pay for the remainder of the 2013 season. Braun will not contest the suspension which was meted out for "violations of the Basic Agreement and its Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program," according to a statement released by MLB. "As I have acknowledged in the past, I am not perfect," Braun said in the statement. "I realize now that I have made some mistakes. I am willing to accept the consequences of those actions. This situation has taken a toll on me and my entire family, and it is has been a distraction to my teammates and the Brewers organization.

MLB's luckiest pitchers

It appears that most of the stuff about Corbin is in front of the Insider pay wall. I no longer have Insider, so I can't say for sure. "To some extent, Corbin's impressive line is a reflection of his own improved performance, but much of his success can be credited to great defense. In fact, based on plus/minus runs saved -- Baseball Info Solutions' estimation of runs saved or cost by fielder range -- Corbin has gotten more defensive support than any other pitcher in baseball."

Diamondbacks 3, Giants 1: Salvage Operation

When the game started, the Dodgers were on their way to demolishing the Nationals and tying up the division. Arizona was staring down a possible sweep at the hands of the Giants. Salvaging the...

MLB pushes Puig in Final Vote

Another reason for #AnyoneButPuig. Screen shot taken from on 7/6 around 7:30 pm.

Hinske Suspension Reduced to One Game

According to a tweet from Ken Rosenthal, MLB has reduced Eric Hinske's suspension for the Dodgers-D'Backs brawl from five games to one. Hinske will serve his suspension tonight (6/25) against the Nationals.

D-backs 2, Giants 6: Bad Things Come In Threes

The first five batters Tyler Skaggs faced today, all reached base, and things didn't get much better, as the Giants took the rubber game on Baxter's Birthday at Chase Field.

Diamondbacks 2, Phillies 4: Opposite Day

So, how did I celebrate Mother's Day? I closed the bedroom door, let the spouse take care of the kids, and watched baseball. Isn't that what it's all about anyway? The Diamondbacks just didn't...

Diamondbacks 1, Dodgers 0: Hellos and Goodbyes

It was a day for saying hello to Ol' Beady Eyes and goodbye to Joe, Sr. We'll get to the game--a great pitcher's duel with an exciting finish--but the real headliner today was the retirement of...

Deciding on divisive fantasy players

More KLaw potshots at Goldy. Now it's in the guise of fantasy advice. Yep, Goldy is a "platoon guy", folks--but at least he's no longer a bad defender: "Paul Goldschmidt: Can he hit breaking stuff from righties? "I think this is what he is -- a platoon guy who destroys left-handed pitching (and Tim Lincecum) while playing above-average defense at first. It probably helps his cause that Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson and GM Kevin Towers really seem to like his makeup, which counts for everything in Arizona these days." (It's behind a pay wall, so I just brought over the relevant part.

Five players being overlooked

A discussion of the top five players who are not valued sufficiently by their organizations. It's written by Paul Swydan of FanGraphs. Patrick Corbin is one of the five: "Patrick Corbin, P, Arizona Diamondbacks "Last year, Corbin turned in some fairly solid work as a rookie in the Diamondbacks' was Corbin who provided some stability to the back end of the rotation. In 17 starts he posted a 99 FIP that was nearly identical to that of rotation front man Ian Kennedy. "However, the Diamondbacks wanted to upgrade this offseason, and signed Brandon McCarthy, which bumps Corbin into a three-way battle for the fifth spot in the rotation... "Solution: Keep him in rotation until Hudson returns, then trade to contender looking for pitching help at deadline." This is part of an ESPN Insider article, so the complete article is behind a pay wall. It includes discussions of the other four players with 1+ seasons of experience, as well as a list of prospects who need to be "freed" by their clubs. Since there has been a lot of discussion about him here, I thought I'd mention that Profar is on the list of prospects.

GMs' thoughts on World Series contenders

Jayson Stark asked five GMs who they thought had the potential to make the World Series. Arizona was the only NL West team chosen by all five.

Top 50 MLB players age 25 or under

Keith Law ranks the top 50 players under the age of 25 in MLB. He has 3 Diamondbacks on his list: Justin Upton at #1, Daniel Hudson at #34, and Gerardo Parra at #36. Note that you have to be an "Insider" subscriber to view the entire article, but you can read the first few paragraphs without a subscription.

Crasnick's take on the D'Backs Improvement

Jerry Crasnick has a piece over on ESPN that talks about the offensive improvement of the team this season. Considering the (sometimes legit) complaints about ESPN ignoring the team, I thought it was worth a post. Also on that note, the MLB page has the D'Backs & Webb's improvement to 6-0 as the main story today. And, just for Dahlian, he talks about Conor Jackson's improving ability to let things go instead of dwelling on defensive mistakes. Did someone mention CoJack dwelling on defensive mistakes, particularly when TC was here as a replacement? Nah... ;) He no longer takes his defense to the plate with him, and he's a much calmer presence in the box.
