by Tony Barnhart

This is a really good read if you are interested in the debate. I actually agree with him on pretty much all points. People love to bash the BCS but don't do their homework or use logic while ripping it.Here are my favorit points..

Fact: For all of the flaws of the BCS, the fact is that it has provided bowl opportunities that the supposedly aggrieved schools had never had in the past. How many times had Utah played in the Sugar Bowl before the BCS? How many times had Hawaii played in the Sugar Bowl before the BCS? How many times had Boise State played in a New Year’s Day bowl before the BCS? If you answered zero to all three questions you’d be right. “The fact of the matter is that the BCS has given access to those conference that they never had before,” said former SEC Commissioner Roy Kramer, considered to be the godfather of the BCS. “Look at the history of the major bowls. They had almost never invited one of those teams before the BCS.”

I think this next point is a key point in fending off the BCS haters who think the BCS kept Utah out of the BCS CG.

Fact: Even the coaches in Utah’s league, the Mountain West, did not step up for the Utes when it counted. Joe Glenn of Wyoming had Utah at No. 5. Rocky Long of New Mexico and Gary Patterson of TCU had them at No. 7. Kyle Whittingham, Utah’s own coach, had his team at No. 5.

So where was all the love for Utah BEFORE they played Alabama in the Sugar Bowl? The fact is that while Utah deserved to win because the Utes flat outplayed the Crimson Tide (who didn’t want to be there), it wasn’t until AFTER the Sugar Bowl that Utah became this incredible juggernaut which should have been given the chance to play for it all.

If your fellow coaches don't think your team is worthy of a shot...why should the BCS...i wonder what the almight AP poll had Utah at right before the NCG? yeah that would be #7...so ...how did the BCS keep them out again?

the five Coalition Conferences (Conference USA, MAC, WAC, Mountain West, Sun Belt) have placed a team in the BCS in four of the past five seasons. Those five conferences get an automatic $9.5 million for participating and another $9.5 million when they place a team in a BCS game. So over the past five seasons the BCS has pumped about $80 million into those five Coalition conferences.

Maybe im crazy but i just don't their gripe...I have said this before and will say it again (Tony said it also) The system that was in place before would have never allowed a Utah, Boise St. or a Hawaii to play in their "big boy" bowls...at least with the BCS you get they have a shot.

I want a playoff just like everyone else but no matter what, you'll have people complain. If its the top4, 8 or 16 teams, you will have so yahoos who will cry that they were left out..No the BCS isn't perfect but say for a few years, we have been given some great matchups and i feel the top 2 teams were given their shot...

And lets be clear on who really is keeping us from a playoff...that would be the Pac-10 and Big 10...

Here's a good read on how silly this whole thing is...the "mid majors" want to cry but they don't want to fight..

Table Scaps

Did you guys think I started the thread over at RTT?? If so..I didn't..some UT douche boy did...just clarifying..

The other day i stirred up the pot a little over at Rocky Top Talk. The funny thing is...I didn't even mean to. I made what i thought was some very non confrontational statements and even went as far as to defend Kiffen. Some douche UT fan over there said that Kiffin is already a bust and blah blah blah. Im sure he was a troll and since he didn't come back to argue his point, its no doubt he is. It got a little crazy after a blogger made this comment...

Basically.....

Am I the only one in the world that thinks that Lane Kiffin might be the next big bust in college football head coaches.

yes

Tennessee WILL beat Georgia on the way to 9+ wins in '09!!!

by VolBrian on Jul 1, 2009 10:02 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs

I replied back with a simple No..why? Not to dig at Kiffin. Cause he's not the only one in the world who feels this way. I wasn't saying that Kiffin is a bust but only that there are a lot of people outside of Tennessee who feel he is a buffoon who is in WAY over his head...Anywho,after a few intelligent back and forths with Hooper, this comment opened the floodgates....

and i think that

is where most people see Kiffin….He failed at Oakland..what makes us think he won’t at UT? Im not saying that is correct logic, but that is what outsiders are thinking. Its kinda like Chizik at Auburn. The dude goes 5-100 at ISU and people think he’ll be successful at Auburn? What on earth would give you that idea?

by bammer on Jul 2, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

You would have thought I compared Kiffin to Hitler. I mean these guys really took it personally. I thought the comparison was just. I really took a shot more at Chizik than Kiffin but oh my lord did they take offense..So much so that two readers created fanshots to discredit or disprove my claim....

Dedicated to Bammer... Kiffin & Chizik in the same sentence

Failure In The NFL But Success In College? It IS Possible...

I ended by saying this

No

you see a guy with the name bammer and you take everything that i said personally…Don’t worry..its happens on every blog..If a guy named UTistheBomb posted negative stuff about Saban over at RBR im sure he would get blasted…

All im saying is that im not bashing Kiffin here. If you want to think that Kiffin has more potential that Chizik then go ahead. Both were successful coordinators at Major universities and both failed at their 1st HC job. Both can make many excuses on why they weren’t or couldn’t be successful. Both are replacing well liked coaches…both are taking over teams that need a major over haul…but go ahead…if you want to wear those homer glasses then by all means do it. BUT the fact is….The UT situation is very much like the one at Auburn….

and btw…

You said he failed at the Raiders. Said he was just like Chizk. Said recruiting doesn’t make you a head coach. Also said we should wait & see.

He did fail at the Raiders…
He is in fact a lot like Chizik…thats not a dig but truth..
Being a good recruiter doesn’t mean you will win (again just ask Coach O) it means you have a better shot BUT….
And yes…we should wait and see if he will be a bust….

by bammer on Jul 2, 2009 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't say EXACTLY the same but they are very similar...What annoyed me was they weren't reading or understanding what i was saying....They just saw my name and got all butt hurt..Anyways..i thought it was funny how easy it was to get them pissed..Again, it was not my intention but some people just have their panties on a little too tight..But it really goes to show how delusional UT fans are..

I know this isn't Bama related but its a good topic for discussion...

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4262751

After Stallworth spent the night drinking at a bar in Miami Beach's Fountainebleau hotel, police said he hit Reyes, a construction crane operator who was rushing to catch a bus after finishing his shift at about 7:15 a.m.

Stallworth told police he flashed his lights in an attempt to warn Reyes, who was not in a crosswalk when he was struck.

Stallworth had a blood-alcohol level of .126 after the crash, well above Florida's .08 limit. Stallworth stopped after the crash and immediately told officers he had hit Reyes. Police estimated Stallworth was driving about 50 mph in a 40 mph zone.

This is the so called "sentence" that this man will "face" after killing someone....

Stallworth faced 15 years in prison. According to the plea agreement, Stallworth needs to serve only 24 days of his 30-day sentence. Murphy agreed to give Stallworth credit for the one day he already served, April 2, which was the day of his arrest and booking. In addition, Stallworth received an additional five days of credit because of a Florida state statute stating anyone who is sentenced to 30 days (besides civil, contempt, drug treatment and house arrest cases) automatically gets five days' credit time served for every 30 days, spokesperson Janelle Hall of the Miami Dade County Corrections Department told Naqi.

After his release from jail, Stallworth must serve two years of house arrest and spend eight years on probation.

Stallworth must also undergo drug and alcohol testing, will have a lifetime driver's license suspension and must perform 1,000 hours of community service. Lyons said after five years, Stallworth could win approval for limited driving for reasons such as employment.

What a freakin joke! How many days in jail did Vick spend after killing dogs?...

Lyons said the plea agreement will allow Stallworth to resume his football career.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league is reviewing the matter for possible disciplinary action. Stallworth could face suspension without pay for some games this year.

Oh wow! Lets not be TOO hard on him...after all..he did just kill someone...

To me this shows just how silly our justice system is and that these so called "celebrities" can get away with anything..including murder...

UA officials considering an appeal.

ed- bumped from the fanposts

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4255376

"We will carefully consider our options regarding an appeal," Alabama athletic director Mal Moore said in a statement after the NCAA announced the sanctions. "The ruling does not hinder our efforts going forward -- in recruiting or in competition -- but the ruling is a clear reminder that we must maintain strict compliance with all NCAA regulations."

This is great and all but I'm not sure if this case fits...

However, the NCAA modified the grounds for reversing a ruling on vacated wins in January 2008 to require institutions to show that the Infractions Committee demonstrated "abuse of discretion" in its ruling. Other grounds include that the committee's decision was contrary to evidence, that no infraction was committed or that the committee made a procedural error.

Well since we didn't argue the facts of the case, im not sure we will change the NCAA's mind.

Seems though UA isn't all that happy with the NCAA..

Moore and University President Robert Witt both called the ruling "disappointing."

"There was absolutely no competitive advantage gained," Moore said. "All of the books were returned."

Sorry Mal, saying "all the books were returned" doesn't help our case all that much...Its kinda like saying..."Well even though I stabbed her 15 times...I took her to the hospital"..

I'm not sure who "Dee" is (ed- Paul Dee, Chairman of the COI) but he sounds like a Douche..I'm sorry...if a violation is to be considered "major", shouldn't there be some evidence that the team gained some advantage?...

Dee, however, had a different interpretation of what represents a competitive advantage.

"I don't know that someone has to kick a field goal or score a touchdown for that to make a difference," he said. "The question is were players who were ineligible because they took impermissible benefits able to play? And if so, you need to vacate those wins."

I'm actually hoping we don't appeal. FSU has looked silly trying to get their wins back And when its all said and done, everyone will know who won those games...

My thoughts on this "textbook" thing..

The more i read about sanctions...probation...loss of scholly's...vacated wins...the more i just get really pissed about this whole thing. I know I'm not the only one but god I think this whole thing is silly..

Its TEXTBOOKS people! Its not like there was this underground ring of students selling textbooks to the masses as if it were crack...Its also not like we had a high profile player sell books to undercover NCAA agents..multiple times! This was a bunch of kids working the system in an attempt to make a buck...That doesn't make it right but it certainty doens't make it a violation..

I just can't believe that we are sitting here today waiting on the ball (or bomb) to drop. Sure the punishment looks to be lighter than originally thought but the fact still remains that this is nothing more than the NCAA trying to flex its wimpy little muscle at us. If this had happened to any other school, the NCAA would have considered this a minor violation. Hell Kiffin has already had what 50 minor infractions so far this season and they actually effect what might happen on the field of play (because it involved recruiting players)...this "textbook" thing has no significant relevance to what happens on Saturdays....its gives no team an advantage..Im pretty sure Shula wasn't going around saying.."Pist...if you come play at Alabama...you can sell your books for a profit!".

So why again is this something the NCAA deems as a "major" infraction?. I know the NCAA is nothing but a bunch of nerds trying to get back at the jocks but what is their freakin deal! And I don't buy the repeat offender BS. Thats like saying cause I cheated at Phase Ten last week, then I did in fact knowingly cheat on my diet today...one has nothing to do with the other..

Im just amazed at whats going on...I swear to everything that is holy...if USC doesn't get hit with a 1000 lb mallet for what they have done...we should burn the NCAA to the ground...cause its more hypocritical then a New York politician and serves absolutely no purpose..plus they gave us this BCS system we all love to hate...

I know its hard for rivals to do but if they took off their "we hate Alabama cause they are cheaters" goggles just for a sec..theyd see this is one huge farce...

Ok..now i feel better..

 	<fieldset class="poll-box">
  <legend>Poll</legend>

How do you feel about this "textbook scandal"?

61%

Its nothing but a witch hunt and i want the NCAA to die

45 votes

13%

Its a joke but i don't really care

10 votes

4%

HA! Alabama caught again!

3 votes

8%

This is a very serious issue and Im personally glad to see the NCAA do its due diligence

6 votes

12%

What..the NCAA sucks?!?!

9 votes

Hey all. Newly converted Falcon fan here. I moved to ATL about 4 years ago and ive been slowly pulled into the flock. As you can see by name im a bama fan and never really been a big NFL fan. Well thanks to Ryan and the new regime, the falcons have my attention. I hate to be one of those band wagon fans but im really excited about the direction of this team. Also, i like the fact that we signed my boy JPW.

Anyways, I just wanted to say hi.
