Black Shoe Diaries 48 hours in Madison

For those of you coming into Madison this weekend, here's a quick primer on some things to do. Madison is a great city with lots to do for its size. This list just scratches the surface, and includes some highlights for someone coming in for a quick weekend trip.

Friday night:

What's next? Shurma named acting head football coach?

(Seriously though, not sure how I feel about this. I know Dr. Joyner is a well-respected member of the PSU community, and he probably will do a great job. Just seems like this could open us up to more "insider" and "cover up" criticism. Dr. Joyner's BoT term is also up in 2012, which means he would have been up for re-election next year...)

Black Shoe Diaries Letters to Joe

A member of the extended Paterno family asked me to pass this message on to anyone interested, so here goes:

If you would like to send Joe Paterno a message of support letting him know what he meant to you or how he made a difference, you can send the email or letter attachment to messages4joe (at) gmail.com. These messages will be printed and delivered to Joe in a binder by a member of the family.

The link is to Maureen Dowd's column in the NY Times regarding the scandal. I think it reinforces Mike's post on media from earlier today, and I got a chuckle out of the correction statement at the end of the article: "An earlier version of this column used the wrong shorthand in the headline and the final paragraph for Pennsylvania State University. It is Penn State, not Penn."

If you're in State College, stop by and cheer the team on. Sunday at 2pm.

"At this point, it’s part of the Happy Valley tradition," Crawford added. "No names on the jerseys, ringing the victory bell, and being very, very careful not to be the reason Coach Paterno dies."

Penn State connection - Millen is his father-in-law. But a good football story even without the connection.

I know Mark Johnson's name was floated early on as a person if interest, but Alvarez has given PSU permission to talk to Johnson about coaching the men's Div 1 ice hockey team. I ran into JoeBa at the PSU-UW basketball game in Madison, and he really got me fired up about the potential for PSU hockey.

NY Times on Stanford's two way starter (fullback and LB), Owen Marecic. I didn't realize his dad was Jeff Marecic, former walk-on defensive tackle for PSU. According to the article, Owen was a "rabid" Nittany Lion fan as a kid and wanted to go to PSU. He sounds like a stand up guy.

Some interesting nuggets, like Delany wanted the Big Ten excluded from the Sears Cup competition.

Black Shoe Diaries Are we national championship material?

You might not know it, but there is a huge game for a Penn State this weekend against a top-notch SEC opponent that will show us how tough our young team really is.  Only in this one, PSU is ranked No. 1...

Yes, our No. 1 women's volleyball team is playing No. 4 Florida tonight at 7:30pm in the Nike Big Four Volleyball Classic.  This a huge test for our young team.  Florida already has wins this year over three ranked opponents, including then-ranked no.2 Nebraska in Omaha.

And no rest for the weary.  On Saturday, PSU will take on either No. 2 Stanford or No. 5 Texas (the teams we beat for the 2007, 2008 (Stanford) and 2009 (Texas) national championships) at 6:30pm.

Hope I didn't steal anyone's thunder with this post (Junny), but with all the Alabama hype, I felt like this huge weekend for the volleyball team was getting overlooked.

The Florida match will be streamed live and you can get all four weekend matches for $9.95 on GatorVision

Warning that some might find the video disturbing. Amazingly, he's ok.

I don't recall knowing anyone with a scooter while at PSU in the 90s. I live in Madison now, and they are extremely popular with the UW students and athletes. Are they big at PSU now too?
