NetsDaily Phoenix Suns honor Brooklyn's Connie Hawkins--how about the Brooklyn Nets?

Brooklyn's Connie Hawkins turns 70 years old in July. He's just been honored by the Phoenix Suns. Can't the Barclay's Center name anything after The Hawk? A Connie Hawkins passageway somewhere? A Connie Hawkins rest room? Come on! Honor Brooklyn's basketball legend while he's still alive! From Suns News at NBA.com:
Newsroom Notes: Suns Tame Grizzlies on Polish Heritage Night By Stefan Swiat, Suns.com Posted: March 10, 2012 (...) The Hawk Flies Downtown Again For the "Legend District" that spans from the D-Backs' Chase Field past the Suns' US Airways Center in Downtown Phoenix, fans were asked to determine which Suns legend would be the next player to be featured on a 42-foot tall graphic. 42 feet is the fitting height for the former Suns star that bore that very number and will be featured in the graphic. Hall of Famer and Suns Ring of Honor member Connie Hawkins was voted by fans as the next legend to represent the city. Hawkins beat out Charles Barkley, Tom Chambers and Alvan Adams for the honor. "That’s the greatest thing I’ve ever seen," Hawkins said smiling. "Maybe it should be a little bigger." Nah, 42 feet seems just about perfect.

Ridiculous Upside Who would you call-up to the New Jersey Nets?

[I moved this to the front page.  barrypopik is definitely on to something. -- Scott]

Nets fan here. We should have signed Anthony Tolliver. The Nets have an open roster spot and are looking for talent at any position. Who would you recommend?

I’ve recommended three call-ups: Mustafa Shakur, Mike Harris, and Dwayne Jones.

I’ve also recommended getting rid of deadwood expiring contracts such as Tony Battie, Jarvis Hayes, and Josh Boone.

Harris and Jones will add rebounding and toughness next to Brook Lopez that the Nets need. Shakur can form an active backcourt with rookie Terrence Williams. Why is a guy like Shakur not being given a chance? If successful, these guys could stick next year as backups.

Do the Nets have anyone scouting D-League for the next Mikki Moore or Jamie Feick or Chris Childs? Could you tell them to call up SOMEBODY? Help us, D-League!

The Nets' strategy is to get the #1 pick and sign PG John Wall, sign free agent SF LeBron James, sign free agent PF Chris Bosh, add the Dallas #1, add their #2 that's at the top of that round, and that's a pretty strong team. There's a place on that team for a rebounding Dwayne Jones, a Mike Harris, or a Mustafa Shakur as reserves. Why not try them out now?

PG Devin Harris is playing hurt, and PG Keyon Dooling has been hurt all season. Why not bring up a Shakur or Curtis Stinson?

OT: I'm a contributor to the Oxford English Dictionary and the Historical Dictionary of American Slang. If you've got D-League slang like "dish" or "posterize" or "dime," please post them here and/or tell me.

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys have signed their final three free agents: receiver Miles Austin, running back Alonzo Coleman and tight end Rodney Hannah.

The signings Thursday meant Austin, a restricted free agent, would return to Dallas after being courted by the New York Jets. The Jets never made an offer.

Chiefs trade Gonzalez for 2010 draft pick
ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Falcons obtained tight end Tony Gonzalez from the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday for a draft pick next year.

The Falcons will send a second-round pick in 2010 to Kansas City in exchange for Gonzalez, the only tight end in NFL history selected to 10 Pro Bowls, the Chiefs announced.

Gonzalez caught 96 passes for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2008. He owns NFL career records for tight ends with 916 receptions, 10,940 yards receiving, 76 TDs receiving and 26 100-yard receiving games.

For those surprised that the Cowboys, who open their palatial new stadium this season, are not featured in a night game in Week 1, well, baseball got in the way. So Dallas, the NFL's biggest TV draw, which is moving to Arlington, Texas, near the Rangers' ballpark -- the Rangers are home that weekend -- will have to wait until the second week, when the Cowboys are expected to host the Sunday nighter.

"We have the chance to get on the national game the second weekend with not being able to get on the first weekend," Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said Monday at the owners meetings. "We're having to work with the league on some things."

The Cowboys and Lions get to keep their traditional Thanksgiving hosting slots.

The Lions go back to meeting the Packers that day, a matchup that occurred every year from 1951 to '63 and will happen for the 19th time. The Raiders will be at the Cowboys following that, and the NFL Network night game will feature the New York Giants at Denver.

Blogging The Boys Eminem disgraces Romo, Simpson, Palin

Eminem got some publicity for putting a Sarah Palin look-alike in his latest video and treating her as a sex object. The same video treats Tony Romo and Jessica SImpson with similar respect.

I thought Eminem had retired and was too busy counting his money, but I guess not.

Eminem's 'We Made You' Video Takes Aim At Celebs

Slim Shady mercilessly lampoons celebrities, from Lindsay Lohan to Sarah Palin, in the new clip.

Where do we start? Slim Shady promised he was up to his old tricks in the video for "We Made You," his first solo clip since 2005 and the official opening shot from his forthcoming album, Relapse, due May 19.

Right off the bat, you have Em seated on a throne, who's wearing a long blond wig and a cowboy hat (he's Bret Michaels, in case you couldn't tell), asking for the chorus, which is then crooned by a voluptuous Jessica Simpson-like dancer in tight denim shorts and a ruffled red top. Moments later, as if there was any doubt before, Em comes out in a Dallas Cowboys uniform, looking like Tony Romo and doing a nasty dance behind the faux Jessica.

Aikman OK with Owens getting cut

IRVING, Texas -- Troy Aikman thinks the Cowboys made the right move by getting rid of Terrell Owens. Now he's curious to see whether they also were right about making Roy Williams the new top target for Tony Romo.

Dallas gave its first-, third- and sixth-round picks in the upcoming draft to Detroit to get Williams midway through last season. He hardly looked a guy who led the NFC in yards receiving two years earlier, producing fewer than 200 yards and a single touchdown in 10 games, yet without Owens he becomes the No. 1 receiver.

"If Roy Williams doesn't turn out to be the player that they thought he would be when they made the trade, I think this would be one of the biggest busts in the history of the league," Aikman said.
(...)
Aikman spoke following a news conference announcing Wingstop as the official chicken wing provider for the Cowboys and their new stadium. He's been a customer of the location near team headquarters since his playing days, and is in his sixth year as their national spokesman.

(Quick, can anyone tell me the "official wing provider" of the NY Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Redskins? Who is the official wing provider for Buffalo?--B.P.)

The Cincinnati Bengals added some much-needed size on their defensive line by reaching a one-year agreement with defensive tackle Tank Johnson.

For Johnson, whose career started with the Bears and most recently continued with the Cowboys, he will get a chance to go back to a more natural position along the defensive line. Johnson will play the "three-technique'' for the Bengals, giving him the chance to do some pass rush and shoot the gaps to make plays. The Cowboys tried to make him a nose tackle in their 3-4 defense the past couple of years.

His agent, Jerrold Colton, told The Associated Press the Bengals' defensive scheme is a better fit for Johnson than his previous team, the Dallas Cowboys.

FRAUD RAID SACKS BAM ACTIVISTS
'NFLERS' ON ACORN VOTE LIST
By MAGGIE HABERMAN
October 8, 2008
Officials yesterday raided the Las Vegas headquarters of a major pro-Obama community-organizing group as part of a probe into alleged voter fraud that includes using the names of Dallas Cowboy players on sham registrations.

At least four Nevada agents swept into the offices of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, in the morning with a search warrant.
(...)
Walsh claimed there were reports from investigators that the names of Cowboys football players had been used on some of the dummied voter registrations.

"Tony Romo is not registered to vote in the state of Nevada, and anybody trying to pose as Terrell Owens won't be able to cast a ballot on Nov. 4," said Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller, who is a Democrat.

Tell me about it, Mad Money Cramer! The 2,000 shares that my father gave me in Lehman Brothers went from $67 to $0 in a matter of months.

Caveat emptor ("Buyer beware") is a fine doctrine, but I had no idea that Lehman was taking such risks with my money. Nor did I have any way of knowing. This is (so far this week) the worst bankruptcy in U.S. history, far worse than Enron and 15 times worse than WorldCom.

If I had bet six figures on a Cowboys game, it would have been a safer bet than putting my money in the stock market.

Cramer wonders why everything is melting down and no one is angry.

I'M ANGRY, JIM!

Blogging The Boys Gene Upshaw was great; the GU patches are not-so-great

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_Upshaw
Eugene Thurman Upshaw, Jr. (a.k.a. Uptown Gene) (August 15, 1945August 20, 2008) was an American football player for the Oakland Raiders and executive director of the National Football League Players' Association (NFLPA). In 1987, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In honor of Gene Upshaw, the entire NFL will wear a black "GU" patch for the 2008-09 season.

The "GU" patches at first puzzled me. When did Gene Upshaw play for the Dallas Cowboys?

The late Gene Upshaw was a great player and he's in the Hall of Fame. But the large, ugly black patches on every NFL uniform for this entire season are not a wise move.

Did the NFL have to suck up to its players' union that much?

Tom Landry had just as much an influence on professional football as did Gene Upshaw. All teams weren't required to wear Tom Landry patches all season. I don't remember if the Cowboys did. Tom Landry is in the Hall of Fame and the Ring of Honor. Those are appropriate ways to honor someone.

Pat Tillman died for this country. I don't recall that all NFL players wore Pat Tillman patches all season. Certainly, any Tillman patches weren't of this "GU" size.

Pete Rozelle (1926-1996) was the NFL Commissioner from 1960-1989. He basically created what the NFL is today. His influence was far greater than Gene Upshaw's. No one wore a Pete Rozelle "PR" patch for a single day, if I recall correctly.

Gene Upshaw was great, don't get me wrong.

The large black patches on every NFL uniform are not-so-great. The big "GU" looks like some product placement advertising. Uniforms should be free of clutter, simply having the team's logo with the player's name and number on the back, in my opinion.

There are better ways to honor a good football player who became a players union rep. This was a mistake!

Critics Say Gates-Seinfeld Duo
No Laughing Matter
Microsoft Ads Draw
Attention, Not Praise;
Missing the Creativity?
By NICK WINGFIELD and SUZANNE VRANICA
September 8, 2008

Jerry Seinfeld's long-running sitcom is often described as a show about nothing. The same might be said of a baffling new Microsoft Corp. commercial featuring the comedian and Bill Gates -- not, as "Seinfeld" characters might say, that there's anything wrong with that.

The first highly anticipated commercial in an ambitious $300 million campaign to burnish Microsoft's Windows brand was mostly panned by early viewers. The TV spot -- which began airing during an NFL game on Thursday and was later seen hundreds of thousands of times on YouTube -- follows Messrs. Gates and Seinfeld around a shopping mall as the Microsoft chairman tries on shoes, but doesn't mention Windows once.

A blogger for Computer World wrote: "It's one of the worst, most pointless ads in history" while a headline in the Sydney Morning Herald read: " 'Bizarre' Microsoft ad misses mark."

"She knows he's not ready to get that serious, so she's playing it cool," a source tells Star.

Detroit Lions sign former Michigan QB Drew Henson

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) -- The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Drew Henson, a high school and college standout who has struggled at the professional level in baseball and football.

Terms of the signing, announced on the team's Web site, weren't disclosed.

Henson was signed after second-year quarterback Drew Stanton sprained the thumb on his throwing hand in practice Thursday. He will be sidelined about a month.

The 28-year-old Henson shared quarterback duty at Michigan with Tom Brady.

Giant Steps: George Martin completes cross-country trek for 9/11 heroes

Sunday, June 22nd 2008, 2:28 AM

Former New York Giant great George Martin has reached the end zone, completing a 3,003-mile cross-country walk to raise more than $2 million for ailing Ground Zero heroes.

This true Giant, all 6-feet-5 of him, strode into Embarcadero Park North in San Diego yesterday after a journey of stamina and discovery that began last Sept. 16 in New York and averaged 22 miles a day.

(...)

He also lost 40 pounds and found a curious bonanza - more than $190 in loose change.

Martin's 13-state journey, including brutal 50-mph headwinds in Oklahoma and searing 114-degree heat in Arizona, would have made Lewis and Clark proud.
