Dallas signs Austin, Coleman, Hannah

+

Updated: April 23, 2009, 6:40 PM ET IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys have signed their final three free agents: receiver Miles Austin, running back Alonzo Coleman and tight end Rodney Hannah. The signings Thursday meant Austin, a restricted free agent, would return to Dallas after being courted by the New York Jets. The Jets never made an offer.

Atlanta gets TE Tony Gonzalez from KC

Updated: April 23, 2009, 3:37 PM ET Chiefs trade Gonzalez for 2010 draft pick ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Falcons obtained tight end Tony Gonzalez from the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday for a draft pick next year. The Falcons will send a second-round pick in 2010 to Kansas City in exchange for Gonzalez, the only tight end in NFL history selected to 10 Pro Bowls, the Chiefs announced. Gonzalez caught 96 passes for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2008. He owns NFL career records for tight ends with 916 receptions, 10,940 yards receiving, 76 TDs receiving and 26 100-yard receiving games.

Cowboys get 6 national tv games: Wade Phillips interview

+

NEW YORK -- The Dallas Cowboys will open their new $1.1 billion stadium in a nationally televised Sunday night game against the New York Giants on Sept. 20. The NFL released its complete 2009 regular-season schedule Tuesday. The always-popular Cowboys lead all teams with six scheduled nationally televised games, even without Terrell Owens. So Dallas, the NFL's biggest TV draw, which is moving to Arlington, Texas, near the Rangers' ballpark -- the Rangers are home that weekend -- will have to wait until the second week, when the Cowboys are expected to host the Sunday nighter. "We have the chance to get on the national game the second weekend with not being able to get on the first weekend," Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said Monday at the owners meetings. "We're having to work with the league on some things." The Cowboys and Lions get to keep their traditional Thanksgiving hosting slots. The Lions go back to meeting the Packers that day, a matchup that occurred every year from 1951 to '63 and will happen for the 19th time. The Raiders will be at the Cowboys following that, and the NFL Network night game will feature the New York Giants at Denver.

Tank Johnson to join Bengals

1

The Cincinnati Bengals added some much-needed size on their defensive line by reaching a one-year agreement with defensive tackle Tank Johnson. For Johnson, whose career started with the Bears and most recently continued with the Cowboys, he will get a chance to go back to a more natural position along the defensive line. Johnson will play the "three-technique'' for the Bengals, giving him the chance to do some pass rush and shoot the gaps to make plays. The Cowboys tried to make him a nose tackle in their 3-4 defense the past couple of years. His agent, Jerrold Colton, told The Associated Press the Bengals' defensive scheme is a better fit for Johnson than his previous team, the Dallas Cowboys.

ACORN vote fraud includes Cowboys names

+

FRAUD RAID SACKS BAM ACTIVISTS 'NFLERS' ON ACORN VOTE LIST By MAGGIE HABERMAN October 8, 2008 Officials yesterday raided the Las Vegas headquarters of a major pro-Obama community-organizing group as part of a probe into alleged voter fraud that includes using the names of Dallas Cowboy players on sham registrations. At least four Nevada agents swept into the offices of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, in the morning with a search warrant. (...) Walsh claimed there were reports from investigators that the names of Cowboys football players had been used on some of the dummied voter registrations. "Tony Romo is not registered to vote in the state of Nevada, and anybody trying to pose as Terrell Owens won't be able to cast a ballot on Nov. 4," said Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller, who is a Democrat.

Jim Cramer: NFL gambling is more respectable than Wall Street.

1

Tell me about it, Mad Money Cramer! The 2,000 shares that my father gave me in Lehman Brothers went from $67 to $0 in a matter of months. Caveat emptor ("Buyer beware") is a fine doctrine, but I had no idea that Lehman was taking such risks with my money. Nor did I have any way of knowing. This is (so far this week) the worst bankruptcy in U.S. history, far worse than Enron and 15 times worse than WorldCom. If I had bet six figures on a Cowboys game, it would have been a safer bet than putting my money in the stock market. Cramer wonders why everything is melting down and no one is angry. I'M ANGRY, JIM!

Seinfeld-Bill Gates ad flops (premiered during game)

1

(Maybe we should have a section here about football game tv advertising?--B.P.) Critics Say Gates-Seinfeld Duo No Laughing Matter Microsoft Ads Draw Attention, Not Praise; Missing the Creativity? By NICK WINGFIELD and SUZANNE VRANICA September 8, 2008 Jerry Seinfeld's long-running sitcom is often described as a show about nothing. The same might be said of a baffling new Microsoft Corp. commercial featuring the comedian and Bill Gates -- not, as "Seinfeld" characters might say, that there's anything wrong with that. The first highly anticipated commercial in an ambitious $300 million campaign to burnish Microsoft's Windows brand was mostly panned by early viewers. The TV spot -- which began airing during an NFL game on Thursday and was later seen hundreds of thousands of times on YouTube -- follows Messrs. Gates and Seinfeld around a shopping mall as the Microsoft chairman tries on shoes, but doesn't mention Windows once. A blogger for Computer World wrote: "It's one of the worst, most pointless ads in history" while a headline in the Sydney Morning Herald read: " 'Bizarre' Microsoft ad misses mark."

Detroit Lions sign QB Drew Henson

Aug 22, 6:21 PM EDT Detroit Lions sign former Michigan QB Drew Henson ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) -- The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Drew Henson, a high school and college standout who has struggled at the professional level in baseball and football. Terms of the signing, announced on the team's Web site, weren't disclosed. Henson was signed after second-year quarterback Drew Stanton sprained the thumb on his throwing hand in practice Thursday. He will be sidelined about a month. The 28-year-old Henson shared quarterback duty at Michigan with Tom Brady.
