HawkDigest recruiting corner
Some recruiting bits as we wait for the outcome of the coach search. Good to see that we haven't lost anyone yet and that the coaches are apparently hard on the trail trying to keep the class intact.
David DeJesus and Dayton's Destiny -- Fangraphs
Generally an approval of DDJ (and his contract) and Moore's strategy to trade older players for prospects.
Fangraphs minor league review - KC Royals
I haven't read it yet, but I did notice Tim Smith and Jose Bonilla getting mentioned.
2010 Hitters/Fielders - Snapshot of the roster and salaries
Similar to the 2010 Relievers post from several days ago, this is meant to present a snapshot of who remains on the roster, can we jettison some dead weight, and are there any holes to be filled? The particulars about how many batters the team keeps on the 25-man and how many infielders/outfielders/Teahen-Bloomquist-IF/OF hybrids are kept will have a factor in the final roster (please allow some leeway for fudged arbitration numbers, contract minimums for guys like Pena and Maier, and depending on how you allocate the cash contribution from the Mariners for Yuni). But, given what we know:
--Salaries adapted from Cot's, with some estimations made (nothing crazy); wOBA from Statcorner

Greinke interview from Team Site
Nothing out of the ordinary, but any Greinke interview is a good interview. From a couple days ago.
2010 Starters/Relievers: Surprise, Surprise - not much changes
As it stands, here are the pitchers for 2010. The analysis was to look at who remains, can we jettison some dead weight, and are there any holes to be filled. (Obviously there are some holes to be filled, just hopefully not by the likes of Sidney Ponson or Lamey Wrong.) --Salaries adapted from Cot's, with some estimations made (nothing crazy).

Royals in line for 4th overall draft pick, with Indians hot on the trail. Pirates and Orioles nearly impossible to catch since they need to win 6 of 7 and 5 of 6 respectively while the Royals would need to get swept by the Yankees and Twins.
AL attendance - (KC leads AL Central?)
That KC has the highest attendance in the AL Central is something for four other teams to be embarrassed about.
Jason Bartlett For Real? - at driveline mechanics
maybe someone posted this already, and if so, pardon my oversight
"Bannister, who threw a season-high 119 pitches in his previous start at Seattle, left with one out in the second inning because of right shoulder fatigue." (emphasis mine)
Bannister sacrifices himself to the quest to not lose 100 games.
"The guys were giving me a hard time about my running, but that's the way I play. I like to respect the game."
-- Guess who just earned himself some extra playing time, Brayan Pena. This was his comment about running out his home run, almost running up the back of Mark Teahen. (btw, the recap managed to misspell "Teahan" throughout.)
Stark on Strasburg/Nats negotiations
The long and the short of it is Strasburg probably signs for $20M b/c no way he turns down the most money ever offered to a draftee and no way the Nats go two years in a row not signing the #1 pick in the draft (especially when one of them is the best pitcher to come along in a decade).
But at the same time, nobody around the league is very confident in predicting the outcome.
Washington Nationals/Stephen Strasburg: Signing Deadline Roundtable. Pt. 1 of 2
good insight from some Nats blogger/reporters, with mixed opinions on whether or not Strasburg will sign.

JonahKeri.com - Little Things That Bug Me: Kansas City Royals Edition
Little blurb from Keri on some poor management/lineup construction by Hillman, posted a few days ago.
- - - - - - -
"There are a million facts and figures one could use to describe the Royals' ineptitude this season.
They have Sidney Ponson in their starting rotation
Since coming over in trade, their new starting shortstop has an OPS of -25
The "big bat" they acquired this off-season is hitting .214 with a .291 OBP
With all that said, they do have a few half-decent players, plus a few guys who are useful in the right spots. Yet the Royals' manager, a brilliant tactician who's cost his team at least five games solely based on his inability to run a bullpen, finds ways to muck that up too.
To wit: Who do the Royals go to in the #2 slot in their order today, vs. big righty Jeff Niemann?
Wilie Bloomquist, he of the .293 OBP vs. righties this year, and career line of.256/.308/.313 vs. right-handers.
Batting order, in the grand scheme of things, doesn't make that big a difference. In general, you want your best hitters batting as high in the order as possible, to garner the most at-bats.
It's just reassuring to know that the Royals aren't just messing up the big decisions when it comes to winning baseball games. They get the little things wrong too."

Signing Stephen Strasburg Bigger Than Any Trade Deadline Deal For The Washington Nationals
Also, a more recent article from the Nationals SBN blog saying that there is no news on the Strasburg front since the ESPN report saying that the Nationals were not on pace to sign Strasburg.

Interesting post from RA that looks at Hoch's pitch selection since the All-Star break as a cause behind his recent success.

With quotes from/about some royals such as Willie Wilson. And why did this traitor "Dan Fox" leave K.C. with his baseball stats and take them to Pittsburgh? (not that it's helped them, apparently)

Can we get to the bottom of the Royals front office's use of sabermetrics (or lack thereof)?
The running assumption (at least in my mind) is that the Royals front office doesn't employ any true sabermetric specialists, despite Dayton Moore's suggestion to the contrary. Moore said in the recent interview that he has two analysts on staff, but who are they?
Is one Jin Wong, who had no sabermetric credentials before joining the Royals? Is one Kyle Vena -- batboy, turned clubhouse intern, turned front-office intern?
Can we put out a call to those on the inside to tell us just who, if anyone, is working on sabermetrics for the front office? And if they do have analysts contributing, is the front office in tune with this analysis -- because it sure seems like they aren't? Can Poz or Mellinger or the like just go ask (or maybe they already know)?
We know about and fuss about all the other management positions -- hitting coach, pitching coach, even third base coach -- but we know almost nothing about one of the most important front office positions. Let's find out, and at least then we can know where the team stands and what we as fans are up against.
Moustakas finally turning things around
The page is ESPN "insider", but the Moustakas blurb is before the jump. At least someone besides us thinks he can still emerge as a top prospect.
"the Royals have two sabermetricians working for them" - GMDM
-- if so, do we know who they are and if they're any good?
Are there replacements for TPJ in the Royals' system?
(aka Beating A Dead Horse)
Of course most of us think that pretty much any living human being would be a better replacement for TPJ, but other than Luis Hernandez are there viable options for stop-gap solutions?
But the reason this post really exists is to link to a great site
Minor League Splits dot com
which I haven't really used before, that gives Total Zone ratings (among other things) for many minor league players:

Surprisingly, no other Royals were mentioned.
Tony Pena Jr. has finally crossed back above the Tony Pena Jr. line

P.S. Zips preseason prediction of .227 BA for TPJ -- what were they smoking?
J.P. Howell is mocking you
(please note that this post was penned by DRaysBay blogger RJ Anderson)
Howell's tRA: 2.73
but we counter with Farsworth's tRA: 2.87
CFer replacements
Looking at teams with multiple centerfielders that would be theoretical trading partners to put a replacement (short term or long term) in CF for the injured Coco Crisp. I'm simply listing teams with two "quality" options on their 25-man (with around 100 ABs); if there are significant prospect players in AAA or on the 25-man with fewer ABs that would qualify, then I am probably going to miss them. I'm sure DM would want a good fielder first, but we'll trust that he'll let an overall positive WAR speak for the players' balance between hitting and fielding.
From what I see here, another team's prospect is probably a better fit if GMDM wants someone that can help now and continue to be a contributor down the road (seeing as how DDJ moving back to CF would be absolutely, totally, and in all other ways inconceivable).
