Colin Cowherd Says McDaniel's Unsure of Orton
Anybody catch Colin Cowherd's show, SportsNation, this afternoon? He laid into McDaniels basically saying he's done a horrible job by getting rid of Cutler and fomenting a situation with B.Marsh. Whatever...that's kind of an old story. The thing that got me was what he said about there being a QB controversy between Sims and Orton. He made it sound like McD was very unsure about Orton after Friday night's game. There was no source quoted; nothing definite was mentioned. He just made it sound like all of the sudden today McD said something new about the situation. I thought there was some new news out on the situation like maybe McD named Sims as the starter for Saturday's game or perhaps said something else other than the last thing I heard which was that Orton is still the man and that there's no QB controversy. Of course I came straight here to check if there was anything and there's not. Was Cowherd just hyping the controversy thing (just like the DP did the day after the game) even though McD has stated rather obviously otherwise since then? I know controversy sells but come on! It's been like three days since McD soundly put to rest any thoughts about the QB spot being unsettled. Is Cowherd onto something or just hyping?
Let's Give Orton/Team Some Time
Look, this is nothing new but I think that the preseason is the time to just watch and enjoy and get some football to whet our appetites for the upcoming regular season. We obviously must take most everything we see in a preseason game with a grain of salt. And for the 2009 Denver Broncos, we gotta take what we see with a couple grains of salt because there is that new team smell permeating the whole scene: new starting QB, starting RB, new defensive scheme, new coaches, new emphases, and so on. We cannot expect to see a finished product in the preseason. We cannot expect to see a finished product, probably by midseason. We want to see a finished product, but we just won't. It takes time for all the new to sink in, for the playbook to be known intimately enough for it be effective, for players to learn to trust each other. What we can expect are mistakes (e.g. Orton's interceptions). But the preseason is the best place to make mistakes. I could care a whole lot more about winning in the preseason. That isn't the point. The point is to get experience, work out the kinks, and separate the chaff from the grain (the 53 that will remain). If I'm a coach, I want my players to make mistakes in the preseason. I want them to work with the playbook, stretch it and challenge it and work with each other, stretching and challenging each other. It's gonna take some time and that's the best part about preseason, it gives us time to make the mistakes and to learn from them. So, to Kyle Orton: throw as many interceptions as you need to. If it's going to help you learn the playbook better, learn about your receivers more and about yourself, go for it. Just don't do it in the regular season.
