I am an LSU fan who has been transplanted into Birmingham, Alabama about 12 years ago. I love Birmingham and I enjoy all things college football. Since I am 61 years old I am supposed to bring a little wisdom to my comments. I try to be fair and unbiased (difficult) and not be blind to the facts. So here goes.

a fan of

New Orleans Hornets National Basketball Association Team

And The Valley Shook Football recruiting and the reaction of the internet

I have followed recruiting in general and LSU recruiting in particular very closely this year.  I have been a recruiting fan from back in the day that alums could get involved in the process.  I used to be a letter writer to recruits for Northeast Louisiana University back in the mid 80's.  It was a very enjoyable process because I got to know the kids and follow them throughout their college career and after.

Recruiting athletes is not too different from trying to land a big account in business.  Marketing, communication, entertaining, presentations all are in the process of landing that recruit.  And now it gets played out on a huge stage with an industry built around the whole process.  Rivals, Scout, ESPN, Fox, SI, etc.  have created a product for all of us to follow 12 months a year, culminating on the first Wednesday in February and now even beyond.

Even if the money involved in this process has gotten too big and the hype too much, there is a more disturbing trend taking place.  If you were watching message boards on the 4th of February and you consider yourself a rational human being, you got to see the worst in human conduct.  When hotshot A signs with BigMoney U instead of BigMoney State, all of a sudden this 18 year old kid who 5 minutes before was the chosen one becomes the most vile and filthy  human known to man.  The computer speak acronyms become foul and bodily functions start to enter the dialogue.

Rivalry is great, team spirit is welcome,  but the things that come out of grown men and women's keystrokes when things do not go right is disturbing.  Just because no one knows who you are does not give you the right to spout such garbage across the internet.  I know that nothing will change and in fact will just get worse, but my mama did not bring me up that way and I doubt their's did either.

Enjoy the process, the suspense, the pride when things go well, but get rid of the loser's attitude.

And The Valley Shook shamefully plugging ATVS

As an old (literally) LSU fan, I wanted to let you guys know how much I truly enjoy your site.  You are as unbiased a group (for a team supporter) as I have read and I really appreciate that.  I look forward each day after work to see what pearls of wisdom have been posted and whether I agree with it or not.  Since I do not listen to local talk radio anymore (totally absurd), I look forward to finding out what your opinions and news tidbits are.

I am going to try and post my little comments from time to time and hope my writing ability is not to elementary.  However, it will be fun for me and just maybe fun for someone else.

Keep up the good work.
