Garner versus outside DC

The inevitable has occurred. The rest of Bulldawg nation has finally come around on the FIRE WILLIE bandwagon, and now the real question becomes who to replace him with. And important in these considerations is the status of Rodney Garner, our illustrious recruiter-in-chief.

So what's the consensus, Dawgs? Are we willing to give Rodney his shot at DC in order to keep him, or does Bulldawg nation want to see blood, and clean house? I know my car ride home was dominated by this discussion. In general, I think if we want to have any shot at keeping Garner's recruiting talents away from our rivals, we need to make the effort and give him at least 2 years. However, this does not seem a promising solution to our current problem. It is unlikely that Rodney would bring any clearly new procedures and/or schemes to the game-planning, as he's now been at Georgia for over a decade.

In this case, is making the change to Garner even worth it? I understand the overall belief that our talent level remains high, especially the recent classes, but if we don't see schematic changes, what good does changing the target of our collective rage do? If Garner's already a failure in some sense in this regards, is it worth canning the entire defensive staff and starting over with a top option? Is it okay to loose the services of Rodney when it comes to defensive recruiting in Georgia if we can get a DC worth his weight in TFL?

You tell me!

Chance of UGA running a 3-4 at times this year?

So basically, what I'm wondering is the consensus around here about the chances that we'll see some 3-4 on defense this year. I know Martinez is not particularly a tricky fellow, but there's just something about the returning players we've got that strikes me as a the perfect opportunity to throw a wrench in the system of some team who's prepared for our ever vigilant 4(-2)-3.

Mainly I say this because of the obvious wealth of talent we have at DT. Now, I realize that none of these fellows is a true NT, but I'm not suggesting that our entire defense is going to switch to a 3-4 the majority of the time. I'm mainly wondering about the 3rd down situations, or times when we're in need of extra coverage (think 4 LBs which really translates to 3 LBs and an extra safety).

Now, I also don't want this to sound like I'm down on our DE's, but we're all aware of the issues that group has had in the last year, and I don't know if it would be a bad call to have Owens, Adkins and Weston on the line at the same time. Those three are arguably more likely to record sacks than any of our DE's, and having one or two of them coming off the edge (with a down LB on the other end, possibly) doesn't strike me as a bad idea.

So, really, what does everyone think? Is there a good chance we see a couple downs of solid, true 3-4 defense in more than 1 game this year?
