So it's January 21, 2011.  You're an EDSBS reader, part of the commentariat.  Your head is pounding, you have the cottonmouth, you've Fucked Clemson as hard as you can, and it's time for the off season.  How to fill your time until college football envelops us in its sweaty embrace again next fall?

Here's a modest suggestion of things to read/consume.  Remember, kids, this is a very literate group.  We're smart, snarky, exceedingly well informed, over-educated, and usually drunk. We require you to bring your A-game, all the time.  Look back on the Presidents thread- we do not trifle.

Denard is Tanned, Rested, and Ready  - Angelique Chengelis of the News talked with Denard Robinson, and he's apparently feeling 100%.  Terrible shame about Devin Gardner's back.  Crying shame.  (Not at all [Thank God! Finally the Devin Gardner redshirt we all clamoured for from day one. Was this just a grand scheme by Rodriguez to get Gardner a snap or two at the major conference level so that he knew just how much he had to improve? Is Rodriguez that wonderfully devious? Are Coaches Motivational Tactics Overrated?  - Touch the Banner delves into the motivational powers of football coaches. Are they really relevant or are they just one of those things fans put too much stock in for no apparent reason? Interesting article from an actual football coach.

Is Michigan State this year's Iowa?  - Graham at OTE makes an outstanding point about the sudden rise of Michigan State. We've seen this script before, a couple of lucky bounces, a ballsy call here and there that works out, some timely scoring. All with a Junior quarterback that's improved over his sophomore season. Yup. The similarities are staggering.

Remember a Big Ten team last year that was surviving by the skin of its teeth, winning games they shouldn't have, propelling themselves to a Top 5 national ranking and making people talk about "dream seasons" and the like? Is 2010 Michigan State actually just a green and white version of 2009 Iowa?

Wojo is the best in Detroit  - Wojo sits down with Rich Rodriguez, for an interview.   Manages to conduct actual journalism. [This interview is absolutley excellent, Wojo continues to excell as one of maybe three excellent writers in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area. A small, and I mean small teaser is below. A total must read. - Ed.]

Q: You do often employ a 3-3-5 scheme. Is that not working?

A: I think the scheme part is probably way overrated. I worry more about fundamentals and us being fast enough and physical enough. We've got to play better, we know that, and our defensive staff is working as hard as they can. You can have the best scheme in the world, and if that guy over there beats your guy over here, and you don't tackle well, you're going to struggle.

Q: Recruiting-wise, do you need to focus more on defense?

A: Our numbers were down defensively last year, definitely. But it takes more than one year to adjust. Our defensive numbers now are better, scholarship-wise, but they're young guys. I'm really happy with our freshman class. We need another recruiting class like this one, from a defensive standpoint.

How fired was Brewster? SO, so fired  -  If you read between the lines, I think the AD didn't like Brewster.

SO true - The M-Zone is exactly right.  After these infrequent losses to MSU, every Spartan fan you know, or encounter, will seek you out.  I recommend booze.

SUPERBREAKING News -  Lynn Henning discovers winning better than losing, and that Rich Rodriguez does not eat babies, contrary to popular belief.  Does get points for use of "fraught".

Did we dodge a bullet, or what?  Remember when everyone was clamoring for Les Miles to coach Michigan?  Yeah, here's the thing.  HE CRAZY!  Time has no meaning to him.  Read Spencer Hall's Alphabetical (which is must read material every Monday) to experience the crazy.  I like our guy better.

Defense - Not really our thing. - Angelique Chengelis from the Detroit News talks about U-M's "issues" on defense.  Your humble editor submits that the defense looks worse than it is because of a variety of factors.  Do these factors include lack of talent, and football acumen?  Yes, they do. Thankfully, we have Denard Robinson.

Caveat Emptor - If you don't have tickets in hand for the big game on Saturday, be careful where you get them.  There are fakes going around, and it would suck hard to spend the money, and then not be able to get in.

TRAVISHAMOCKERY - Yeah, the world's largest walking turd is announcing the Michigan-Michigan State game.  I mean, really?  Hasn't this state suffered enough? 

It goes WAY past 11 - Continuing a theme, the guys from the M Zone consider the intersection of depraved gambling, and string theory.  Stephen Hawking always takes the over.
