R.A. Dickey: A somewhat Intimate Portrait
A brief listing of likes and dislikes that I found interesting. I love that he digs Murakami.
Wilpons sued for $300 Million+ due to Madoff Scheme
More details of the lawsuit filed by Irving Picard, trustee for the victims of Madoff's Ponzi scheme. $300 million in false profits, plus millions more because they "knew or should have known Madoff was operating a fraud."
No wonder they wanted to sell off a minority stake in the team
Seats at New Meadowlands
Just saw that there are some really cheap upper endzone seats available for some games this season. Does anyone have any idea what the view is like from up there before I buy them?
The Case for Dillon Gee
via blog.nj.com
Let's be honest here. None of the various options bounced back and forth for SP trading are all that appetizing, with the exception of Dan Haren. Oswalt will cost too much, Westbrook profiles to be another Pelfrey, who strikes out less and walks more (although to be fair Pelf has looked none to dazzling recently), Carmona has yet to prove he can replicate his brilliant 2007 season, Lilly is average and has a 3.11 BB/9 with a lot of fly balls, and Statcorner has Kevin Millwood at an ugly 5.82 tRA (Statcorner has a great primer on this stat but basically it attempts to calculate how many runs a pitcher will give up per nine innings). While I wouldn't mind tossing some prospects to Arizona for Dan Haren, I don't trust Omar not to botch the deal. At this point, unless the Mets show some indication of being more than a .500 team, it's a mistake to mortgage the future on a team that needs more than just another starter to make the playoffs. That has been discussed on this site ad nauseum so I won't bring it up again. What I would like to suggest is that we may have a home grown option that would be as good as the trade targets mentioned, and certainly better than some. Join me after the jump for my case for Dillon Gee.

R.A. Dickey throws One-Hitter for the Bisons
He gave up a hit to the first man he faced and then set down 27 in a row. I am throughly impressed
Some Thoughts on the Mets At-bat/Entrance Music
Given all the dourness that accompanies many discussions of the Mets so far this season, I thought it might be nice to divert ourselves with something fun and entertaining (at least to me). I’ve been to both of Pelfrey’s home wins so far this season and I had some thoughts on the at-bat/entrance music of various players so I thought I’d share them. I’d also like to here what you guys think; i.e., favorites, hated songs, things you miss, etc.
Leading off,
Jose Reyes: “All I Do is Win,” DJ Khaled feat. T-Pain, Rick Ross, Ludacris and Snoop Dogg - I’ve really liked this song since I saw it on America’s Best Dance Crew and it seems like the perfect song for this sort of thing. It was apropos for Reyes that night since he went 3-4 with a RBI Triple. I mean c’mon, “All I do is Win, Win, Win, no matter what!” If only the middle of the order got similar inspiration
Another Quality Piece by Howard Megdal
Something I had never thought of before, nice write-up
On Jenrry Mejia
Finally watched him pitch today. With the caveat that this is only ST and I still want him to start the season in the minors, Goddamn! The movement on his fastball is sick, and while he only threw 2 curves, one of them dropped from the letters to the knees practically in front of the plate. Quite impressive to watch
A new Theme Song
Ted Berg argues for a new soundtrack in sadly humorous fashion
For Next Season, a Plea for Dave Duncan
So, of the myriad difficulties facing the Mets this offseason, one of the most perplexing is the question of the starting rotation. Right now we have one known quantity in the person of Johan Santana. Niese is coming off of major surgery, Maine is an unknown (not saying anything good or bad, but he hasn't pitched for most of a season so we don't know) Pelf and Ollie have been maddeningly inconsistent, and in Ollie's case injured. Notwithstanding the recent successes of our fill in rotation (or the fab 4 as Chris Carlin called them tonight) they are for the most part back-end of the rotation pitchers (if that, in some cases), or still developing (read: Parnell) I've heard lots of possible solutions for this, and I'd like to suggest that maybe a change in oversight is needed as well as a trade. Nothing personal against Dan Warthen, but he does not seem to be the one to preside over the pitching staff any longer, although how much he could have done or did do to try and help Ollie and Pelf in particular I'm not sure. Fortunatly there is an answer out there, someone who can help right the ship, and that answer is Dave Duncan.

As if you needed more analysis of Omar's failings
Looked at it in this light, that whole vote of a cofidence thing looks even more bizarre
SOCKS! is apparently here to stay
I would hope that after everything that has gone wrong, Jerry and Omar would be smart enough to keep Caesar Socks around , but I might be giving them to much credit.
Fatcessa has a brief moment of semi-sarcastic compassion
In keeping with Eric's post earlier today, you know things are bad when even Fatcessa runs out of bad things to say about the Mets, even if only for 30 minutes
Carlos Beltran is approaching the next step of his rehab
Anyone else think this is a bad idea? And what does Jerry mean about a more "regimented" approach to Wags?
Bobby Parnell as a starter?
So, small sample size notwithstanding, I really loved his line tonight. Not only that, his breaking pitches were working very well for him to night, particularly his slider which was downright filthy. Given that his last start was about as different as night and day and to steal a line from SNY, Bobby Parnell could be a good #4-5 starter, Boom or Bust? I haven't made up my mind yet, and I'm curious as to what you all think
Minaya shouldn't be fired for this, but Rubin did talk to Ricco
For your consideration via the New York Times.
What do we think of Livan?
Forgive me if it seems I am overly optimistic, but before yesterday I was ready to pronounce him done and hope that the Mets bring up Figueroa. Now I'm not so sure. Certainly one game isn't enough to pass judgement on his abilities but he did strike out a season high seven. I'll leave it to you gentlemen (and ladies), what should be done with Livan now?
Money and the Wilpons
How much of a factor is the new stadium and the revenues thereof going to be for the rest of the season? The bonds which paid for Citifield need to be repaid by the Mets, presumably through ticket sales and luxury boxes. While most of the boxes are tied up in long term contracts, I would assume the ticket sales will drop if the season continues as it is right now. According to some, the smart move for the Mets would be to start planning for next season and stop playing people such as Tatis and Berrora, who arguably do more damage by there presence then if some younger players were brought up, at least so they can get some major league exposure and playing time. The Mets have not done this. As stated here a few days ago, Jose Reyes may even push himself to return before he is 100% and damage himself further in the attempt. Other injuries have also been handled poorly in an attempt by the team to get players back faster. Here's my question: Is all this rushing because the Wilpons are so worried about revenues that they can't bring themselves to take the financial hit that would come from conceding the season? Is that why no one in the "big three" (Ricco, Minaya, Bernazard) is willing to concede the season, because the Wilpons won't let them? Thoughts? P.S. apologies if this is in the wrong section or anything, still getting the hang of the posting rules
