WTF? Tennessee fans point to Neuheisel to explain Lane's boo boo?

Tennessee fans are so desperate to make excuses for Petey's stupid protege's booboo that they are blaming Neuheisel for it:

The Rick Neuheisel theory. This is sort of an amalgam of the bless his heart and prison rules theory, only motivated more by delusions of grandeur than by spite, bravado, or a sense of self-preservation. It's a little brother's desperate attempt to show his big brother that he can't pick on him. It's usually met with a laugh or an unceremonious wedgie. Or both.

I will not link because BN folks does not want us link to trash but that came from SBN's Tennessee blog. I thought those guys were pretty classy this year before our game but that is just a really dumb cheap shot.

Dohn's funny 'blogging': is he trying to stir up outrage within UCLA fanbase (re Leach)?

Looks like Brian Dohn is up to old tricks, selectively filtering out "info" on his "Inside UCLA" blog.

Mike Leach is the toast of college football. Dohn is curiously putting out some revisionist history to give the picture that UCLA dissed Leach before settling for Neuheisel:

Leach would have come for less ($1.7 to $1.8 million) and UCLA offered Mike Bellotti about $2.2 million per year. But none of that mattered because UCLA's administration wanted NOTHING to do with Leach.

UCLA offered Bellotti $2.2 million?

Not according to Dohn's own reporting on December 21:

UCLA's search firm contacted Bellotti shortly after Guerrero fired Karl Dorrell on Dec. 3, but was rebuffed, sources said. However, armed with enough money to pay at least $1.8million, UCLA made another run at Bellotti, who is making $1,055,000 at Oregon. He also has a $350,000 buyout. Bellotti, who turns 57 today, was also the head coach at Chico State for five seasons, and has a 126-77-2 career record.

I got that from Nestor's post who excerpted Dohn's story that day.

Dohn reported last year that UCLA would go up to 1.8 million for Bellotti. 10 months later he is now contradicting his own report upping that amount to 2.2 million?

I get the sense that Dohn is trying to get his readers all riled up along with all the message board posters (who get riled up over anything) to create resentment over Neuheisel. If not why is contradicting himself and based on his own reports and making things up (if we were to go by his own reports from last December)?

Something seems really fishy funny with Dohn's 'reporting'.

Collison is feeling the need for speed -

With Kevin Love having bolted for the NBA after one season, the Bruins lose their burly center and the keystone of last year’s offense. But senior point guard Darren Collison suggested the Bruins could be even more potent offensively without Love.

Last year, in Collison’s words, the Bruins dumped the ball inside and fed Love in the post and “watched him score 100 times.” Collison said it as if he had just as much fun watching paint dry and grass grow.

The offense at times required Collison and his teammates to wait for Love to lumber down the floor. It’ll be different now that Alfred Aboya is the projected starting center, according to Collison.

“[Aboya] can run the court probably better than Kevin, so it makes our offense a lot faster,” he said. “We can play a lot faster than we have.”

Howland is keeping it real by reminding everyone Collison and his team-mates still have to go inside -

“We still have to be able to score inside and manufacture points around the basket and get to the foul line,” Howland said.

But Collison is fired up about our depth -

“My freshman year, I think the reasons we went to the national championship was our starting five was good, but the depth brought us a long way,” he said. “And I think this year is going to be the same way, because of that depth.

“… Collectively, the talent is definitely there. We’re real skillful on the offensive end. Defense, that’s something we’ve been preaching since Day 1. That’s something we’ve done ever since coach Howland’s come here.”

Can't wait till Monday night!!!

Go Bruins!!!

Cal fb player arrested for robbing crew team member who allegedly hurled 'racial slurs'

Some ugly news out of Berkeley Republic:

A Cal football player and a former team member upset at reported racial slurs made by a member of the university's crew team sought revenge by robbing two residents of a dormitory, but targeted the wrong people, campus officials said Tuesday.

R.J. Garrett and Gary Doxy, both 21, were arrested and charged Monday in connection with last month's robbery of two Cal crew team members at the Clark Kerr Campus, a residence-hall complex southeast of UC Berkeley that is home to many student athletes.

The suspects, who are black, decided to commit the Sept. 30 robbery after hearing about racial slurs reportedly made by a white member of the Cal crew team at an off-campus party three days earlier, police said.

A black female student athlete who was at the party was offended by the comments, which someone else relayed to Garrett and Doxy, police said.

The robbery victims were outside the party and did not make the offensive comments, authorities said. The student who allegedly uttered the slurs has been suspended from the crew team and is facing separate student conduct charges by the university. He was not identified.

"The campus has made it clear ... that racial slurs are deplorable and unacceptable, and that is why we have mechanisms in place to deal with such incidents," Gibor Basri, vice chancellor for equity and inclusion, said in a statement. "Our office seeks to foster an inclusive and healthy campus climate, and will take further active steps to ensure that campus community members feel welcome and safe."

Unlike Petey, Tedford didn't waste any time in taking action:

Late Tuesday, Garrett was dismissed from Cal's football team, said Dan Mogulof, a UC Berkeley spokesman. Garrett was a junior fullback who had come to Cal from Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, where his father, Robert, is a longtime and well-respected coach. R.J. Garrett was a sixth-string fullback who, in three seasons, had never participated in an offensive play.

Good for Tedford. If this happened in South Central, Petey would make him run few laps and "suspend" for one quarter.

Jamie Dixon, Coach Howland's protege (his first assistant when he was a coach at Pitt) is thriving as the head coach for the Panthers. He just got a contract extension:

Pittsburgh basketball coach Jamie Dixon's contract was extended three seasons through the 2015-16 season Thursday, a deal that came two years following his last extension.

Dixon will receive a raise from his $1.3 million salary of last season, when he was the university's highest-paid employee.

Pitt may have felt an urgency to extend Dixon's contract so soon after giving him an extension through the 2012-13 season in March 2006 because other Big East coaches were beginning to sign more lucrative contracts.

West Virginia coach Bob Huggins' contract, for example, guarantees him at least $20 million over 10 years, including $1.5 million this year.

Dixon has had his salary more than doubled the last three years. Pitt substantially upgraded his salary after Arizona State and Missouri made overtures about hiring him following the 2005-06 season.

Before that, Dixon -- who had no major college head coaching experience before being hired by Pitt in 2003 -- was making about $600,000 per season.

Lot of times you can tell a lot about a great head coach judging by the assistants coming out of his program. Coach had Danny Crum doing well at Louisiville. Even Harrick (an assistant for the Coach) won banner number 11. Dean Smith had assistants like Larry Brown and Roy Williams.

Coach Howland's assistant has already proven himself at Pitt. Kerry Keating is a good bet to successful at a mid major like Santa Clara?

Coach K's Ratface's coaching tree? So far it has only produced flameouts like Tommy Amaker (fired from Michigan) and Quinn Snyder (fired from Missouri). No one knows whether Johnny Dawkins will be successful at Stanford.

Something to consider when comparing Howland to the most over-rated and celebrated college head coach by DSPN's hype machine. It might happen if UCLA-Duke gets matched up against each other in the 2K Sports Classic.

Go Bruins!!!!

Just saw this in the Tucson Citizen:

University of Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson is under investigation for possible NCAA violations, UA officials said. UA on July 2 reported an apparent Level 2 violation - or less severe - of NCAA rules regarding soliciting donations, Athletic Director Jim Livengood said in a statement released Monday afternoon.
A letter was sent this spring to the Rebounders Club board of directors from Olson's office, encouraging members to donate to an amateur basketball exhibition tournament at UA, Livengood's report said. The letter was printed over Olson's electronic signature and went out marked "personal and confidential," said the report Livengood sent to Ron Barker, the associate commissioner of the Pacific-10 Conference. Olson "adamantly denied" knowledge of the letter being sent and later sent a retraction, Livengood said in his report. NCAA rules prohibit institutional representatives from arranging financial assistance for or paying costs of prospective student athletes.

I guess Lute is doing whatever it takes to compete against Ben Howland. Old Lute is getting exposed as Dirty Lute. What a joke.

New depth chart out today for the Zona game. Looks like Chandler is back at TE (behind Moya and Harkey). Sean Westgate taking over Bosworth's spot at WLB (who is out this week with an injury). Bell listed as the starter at TB. Surprised to see Hale still starting at SLB. He didn't do much on Saturday.
