OC Register launches "UCLA Blog," slurs Neuheisel in first post

+

The OC Register launches a "UCLA Blog" (which doesn't feature a single Bruin alum) and promptly slurs Neuheisel by throwing in the "slick" reference in its first post, "If Rick Neuheisel wins more than seven games, it would be a slick accomplishment."

Donvoan Edwards, JUCO OL Commits To UCLA?

According to BRO and BruinBlitz, Donovan Edwards committed to UCLA last night. This is a good get for the program because of all the depth issues at OL. Edwards should be available for August camp. Now there is conflicting info. from Jill Painter on the Daily News blog. Painter is saying Donovan doesn't have the grades?

More Problems w SuC Football: Coach Arrested, Player Dismissed

More problems in Pom Pom's program. An assistant coach "takes leave" after getting arrested 'on suspicion of driving under the influence of prescription drugs.' Sad. And another player gets kicked off the team for being too dumb, even for U$C.

Stewart Mandel Q&A On Ben Olson

1
If guys like Brian Cushing qualify as "eighth-year seniors," can't we come up with an even longer term for someone like UCLA QB Ben Olson, who attended multiple schools, went on a two-year mission, redshirted, got married and suffered multiple injuries? How long has it been since this guy was the best high school QB in the nation? -- Chris Ochoa, El Macero, Calif. Good point. Olson, while technically a fifth-year senior, was the top-rated quarterback (by some) in the high school class of 2002. How long ago was that? Well for one, some of the other top-rated QBs in his class included Vince Young, Troy Smith and Marcus Vick. It would be another year before Chris Leak signed with Florida. And Chad Henne and Brian Brohm had just completed their sophomore years of high school. So yes, unquestionably, Olson should be added to the list. But in reading some of my e-mails, it seems some of you took this exercise a bit too literally. Just because a guy is only a fourth-year senior on paper does not disqualify him if, as in the case of Penn State's Derrick Williams; it still seems like he's been in college since 2001. And while several Ohio State fans nominated Todd Boeckman -- who, because he delayed his initial enrollment, will be 24 this fall -- the fact is no one outside of Columbus had heard of him prior to last season and therefore he does not count.

I'm out of the picking business.

The NCAA enforcement staff will decide soon whether to roll the Mayo and Bush cases into one case. If the same bylaw -- a player's receiving extra benefits -- was violated (even in two different sports), USC could be found to lack institutional control.

OJ officially cuts all ties with Guillory "in a face-to-face confrontation." This says a lot to me. It sounds like OJ went off on RG for having used him. As stated earlier, OJ said he would be very upset if RG had done anything behind his back that would hurt him. It implies that RG may have tricked OJ. He may have taken money from BDA and influenced OJ toward BDA without OJ even knowing about it. It also may show that OJ did NOT receive improper benefits from RG. Why? I believe that if you are involved in wrongdoing with another, you want that other party as close to you as possible so that the two of you can "get your story straight" and not incriminate each other. By completely disassociating himself with RG, OJ is saying that he doesn't fear anything he will possibly say. He is innocent. OJ is a smart guy, but even smart guys (who are trusting a naive) can be tricked and used. This would appear to bode well for the program. As this was all done surreptitiously. Thus, maybe RG duped all of us... OJ, his family, USC, and the NCAA... Hope I'm right... Fight On!

Plaschke's Solution for SuC: "Hold a news conference"

2

Plaschke things this whole mess can be cleared up with a PR blitz: They need to show their madly passionate fans who, in my experience, have always wanted to win the right way. They need to show their potential recruits, who are now hearing only the negatives. Hold a news conference. Bring out a compliance officer. Explain how the system works. Highlight the safeguards. Answer the questions.
